Shabbes / שבתText: Marc Glaser

Shabbes, shabbes, shabbes It seems me that angels soar In every corner of house When my mother blesses the candles And says “Good Shabbes.” And when my father begins to say “Shalom upon you, O ministering angels…” I am sure that among us Angels fill the house. Shabbes, Shabbes... My father fills the cup With wine, white or red, It seems me that God’s Presence Has poured Her light upon everyone. And when we begin to sing zemiros: “All those who observe the holiness of the seventh day as is Her due, all those keep the Sabbath and guard her from desecration” I am sure that in heaven Angels sing like this. Shabbes, Shabbes...

Shabbes, shabbes, shabbes. Dakht mir az malokhim shvebn In yedn vinkele fun hoyz ven mayn mame bentsht op likht un zogt “gut shabbes” not aroys. Unter Dayne Vayse Shtern Text: Avraham Sutskever (1913-2010)

Under your white stars Stretch to me your white hand My words are tears They want to rest in your hand See, it dims, their sparkle In my cellar gaze And I have no corner to grant them back to you And I want, loyal God To entrust you with my possessions Because a fire is demanding in me And in fire [are] my days Only in cellars and holes Weeps the murderous quiet I run higher, over rooftops And I seek, where are you, where? Stairs and courtyards begin to chase me bizarrely, howling

Text: Leyb Rozental (1916-1945) Buy cigarettes, buy saccharine Merchandise has become nearly worthless A life for a penny A small coin an earning Have you heard of the ghetto peddler? My name is Yisrolik I am the child of the ghetto A throwaway youth Though there is nothing left I still serve it with a whistle and a tune A coat without a collar Underwear from a sack I’ve got galoshes; All I’m missing is shoes But whoever dares to laugh a lot I’ll show him who I am Don’t think the chaotic street birthed me I was once a child to my parents I lost both of them Don’t think it is a joke I was left like the wind in the field My name is Yisrolik But when no one sees Quietly I wipe a tear from my eye But of my sadness It is better not to speak Why recall and make one’s heart heavy?

Never say this is your final road, Though leaden skies may obscure the blue,

For the hour that we longed for will surely come, And the drumbeat of our steps declares: We are here!

From lands of green palms to lands of whitest snow,

We will arrive with our anguish and our grief, And wherever our blood wet the earth,

There our courage and our spirit will be reborn.

Therefore, never say this is your final road, Though leaden skies may obscure the blue,

For the hour that we longed for will surely come, And the drumbeat of our steps declares:

We are here!

Composer Feature Sidor Belarsky (1898-1975), the arranger of tonight’s opening selection, “Shabbes,” graduated from the State Conservatory at Leningrad and was former leading basso of the Leningrad State Opera Company. He came to America on February 8, 1930, with his wife and daughter. He devoted much of his time to teaching music at the Jewish Teachers Seminary in New York City and was one of the most beloved Yiddish singers of the 20th century, regularly giving concerts throughout Europe, the Middle East, Canada, South Africa and South America. As a pre-eminent collector, disseminator and interpreter of classic cantorial music, Chassidic nigunim, and Yiddish folk songs, he breathed new life into songs that might have otherwise been forgotten.

PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Our God and God of our ancestors,

bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings

of our lives and circumstances, To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us to channel our anger, So that it motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear,

knowing that as vulnerable as we feel, there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them.

Help us to taste the sweetness of liberty, To not take for granted the freedoms won

in generations past or in recent days. To heal and nourish our democracy,

that it may be like a tree planted by the water whose roots reach down to the stream; it need not fear drought when it comes,

Janusz Korczak (1878-1942) Janusz Korczak was a Polish-Jewish educator and children’s author known as Pan Doktor (“Mr. Doctor”) or Stary Doktor (“Old Doctor”). He spent years working as the director of a children’s home in Warsaw. He was so dedicated to his children that even when he was offered sanctuary, he stayed with his orphans as all 192 were ordered to evacuate the orphanage and were sent to the Treblinka extermination camp on August 5, 1942. The children were dressed in their best clothes because Korczak had told them they were going out to the country so they should be cheerful. Nazi soldiers again offered him sanctuary or even a way to escape, but again Korczak refused and boarded the train with his children. David Eber, Kleinbaum Rabbinic Intern at the Society of the Advancement of Judaism (SAJ) David Eber is in his final year at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC), where he has served in a wide variety of rabbinic settings from chaplaincy to non-profits, to campuses and pulpits. David attended the University of Oregon, and following college he became an environmental activist and community organizer in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. David brings a passion for teaching Torah, a healing presence and a desire to make the teachings and spiritual practices of Judaism accessible and meaningful. The Kleinbaum Internship honors RRC graduate Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, 1990. It celebrates her significant contributions to social justice in the larger Jewish community; her outstanding leadership of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah; and her creation of, and support for, a program of practical rabbinical training that has become a model in the field. Muslim Community Network 8th Annual Gala: Building Our Dream Thursday, April 19, 6:30pm, New York Hilton Midtown At its upcoming Gala, the Muslim Community Network will honor Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum for her inspirational social justice leadership as a faith leader and her consistent allyship to the Muslim community. She has stood in friendship and solidarity with MCN since its inception 15 years ago. Dedicated to using civic education and leadership development to expand and shape the public narrative about what it means to be Muslim in the United States, MCN invites the CBST community to honor Rabbi Kleinbaum and support MCN’s mission: Ensure that every NYC resident is equipped with the proper tools and knowledge to use their voice and spirit to improve and brighten the communities around them. What does this structure have in common with our 21st-century centers of learning and worship? Have you wondered about the origin of the Ner Tamid or how layouts of the synagogues vary across time and place? Did you know that Sephardi synagogues have a different Aron Kodesh than Ashkenazi? In this mini-course taught by Miya Rotstein, explore these and other questions, look at decorative art and architecture, and examine historical texts and accounts that have influenced the Jewish House of Worship. Come for one or all sessions but please register in advance at http://bit.ly/SynagogueArt.
