MEIR FINKELSTEIN (born 1951) was born in Israel but immigrated with his family to England when he was four years old, after his father, Cantor Zvi Finkelstein, accepted a position at one of London’s premier congregations. At 14, Finkelstein became the youngest cantor in Europe, taking his first professional post at the synagogue in Glasgow, Scotland. He studied at the Royal College of Music and graduated with honors, receiving his ARCM diploma in singing, piano, and composition. In 1974 he immigrated to the United States, and in 1978 he moved to Los Angeles, where he served as cantor at Sinai Temple in Westwood for 18 years. He currently serves as cantor of Congregation Beth Yeshurun in Houston, Texas. He has composed more than 200 settings for the liturgy, including “Sim Shalom” and “L’dor Vador,” which are cherished melodies of the CBST High Holy Days. Lehrhaus Adult Education Jewish Ritual with Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Intern Ayalon Eliach What is the point of Jewish ritual? Since biblical times, Jewish thinkers have pondered the reasons behind Jewish ritual and practice. Here, we will explore the different answers and develop our own understandings of why we do the things we do. Thursday, January 11, 18, 25, 6:30 – 7:30pm. On Death and Dying with Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Intern Steven Philp Judaism teaches: “It is better to attend a funeral than a feast” (Ecclesiastes 7:2). Why? Because what we understand about death shapes how we create lives of purpose. We will explore a range of Jewish perspectives on death and dying, drawing from biblical narratives, rabbinic text, ritual practice, and our own experiences. Thursdays, February 8, 15, 22, 6:30 – 7:30pm Israeli Dancing With Mitch Ginsburgh Mondays, January 29, February 12, March 19, 7:00 - 9:00pm, 130 West 30th Street Come learn with internationally known dancer and choreographer Mitch Ginsburgh. PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Our God and God of our ancestors,

bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings

of our lives and circumstances, To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us stay angry, So that our anger motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear,

knowing that as vulnerable as we feel, there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them.

Help us to taste the sweetness of liberty, To not take for granted the freedoms won

in generations past or in recent days. To heal and nourish our democracy,

that it may be like a tree planted by the water whose roots reach down to the stream; it need not fear drought when it comes, its leaves are always green (Jeremiah 17:8).

Source of all Life, Guide our leaders with righteousness, Strengthen their hearts,

but keep them from hardening. That they may use their influence and authority to

speak truth and act for justice (Isaiah 16:3-5). May all who dwell in this country

share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws.

May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth.

May we be strong and have courage To be bold in our action and deep in our compassion, To discern when we must listen and when we must act, To uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism,

discrimination, and violence in all its forms, To celebrate the many faces of God reflected

in the wondrous diversity of humanity, To welcome the stranger and the immigrant

and to honor the gifts of those who seek refuge and possibility here, as they have since before this nation was born.

Let justice well up like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24)

On Wednesday, January 17, CBST joined a coalition of American Jewish groups brought together by Bend the Arc Jewish Action in Washington DC for an historic act of nonviolent civil disobedience. Our action was witnessed by hundreds of young immigrant Dreamers. As Jews, we stand with our immigrant neighbors on the side of justice, not oppression; on the side of liberation, not deportation.

Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, Sanctuary Team Co-Chair Sabrina Farber, House of Peace Co-Chair Harold Levine, Allison Drew Klein, and Tyler Watkins represented CBST in Washington. “I was deeply moved by the power of the group as we marched, while singing Ozi v'Zimrat Yah and We Shall Not Be Moved, on our way to the Russell Office Building. Arriving to find the building already packed with DREAMERS, sporting distinctive orange caps, was almost too much to bear. As we moved to the center of the rotunda

and began to sing, we unfurled our banners and the DREAMERS crowded around the edges and swarmed the balcony, taking photos, waving, crying, and moving along to the music. It felt so right to be right there, right then - taking action with a group of dedicated Jews from around the country. We are demanding that our country treat immigrants with basic human dignity and respect. Nothing more. Nothing less. —Sanctuary Team Co-Chair and CBST Board Member Sabrina Farber

“In the minute before I sat down to face arrest, I carefully scanned the faces of the hundreds of Dreamers who packed the periphery of the Rotunda in the Russell Office Building. I would be able to return to my home and my protections as an American citizen when the day was over, while they are facing a future that can include loss of jobs, leaving school, and deportation. I thought of my maternal grandmother, Matilda Salzman Parad, who came to the US from the Austro-Hungarian empire at the age of 16 - never to see her parents again - determined to start a new life in a new country, and how America fulfilled its promise to her. And I thought of my Dad, who enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and literally put his life on the line serving on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific in the final year of World War II, fighting for the American freedoms that were so important to him.

—House of Peace Co-Chair Harold Levine

“Rabbi Jonah Pesner spoke Wednesday morning as we prepared to march to the Russell Senate Building about there being a Hebrew word for the type of escalated action we were taking that morning. Kedushah. Holiness, he said, was what we were bringing back to our nation. Raising up our nation up through the greatness of G-d’s holy work. This idea rang so very clear to me. The words we say in our Kedushah prayer: Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, Adonai Tz’vaot come from Isaiah and it’s no coincidence to me that in my Hebrew name I was named after Isaiah. In the verses following in Isaiah 6, the prophet responds to G-d’s call saying “hineni,” here I am, send me. In the action we took Wednesday morning, we responded to the call of holiness and said to the Congress “hineynu”; here we are and we support the Dreamers. We must remain present and committed to the call of justice and the greater call of kedushah.” —Tyler Watkins

“This morning at the debrief of [Wednesday’s] action six Dreamers spontaneously came who were among the 50 plus Dreamers who were in the balcony yesterday witnessing the action. They came to share their appreciation, nearly all of them started crying when they spoke. They said, ‘I can't believe you would do this for us, when you don't need to.’ ● ‘I felt peace. I felt safe.’ ● ‘I was surprised, I didn't know why you were there and then when I heard you sing I realized it was for us.’ They shared how isolated undocumented people feel and how this broke through. Many of us hearing them began crying as well. While I was sitting in the rotunda singing, waiting to get arrested I kept thinking of my parents, Holocaust survivors, and who sat in for them. I knew that in part I was doing it because of our history of oppression, but to hear the Dreamers say how important it was to them for us to show up, really touched me. They especially talked about the singing. We sang Olam Chesed Yibaneh and Ozi V'zimrat Yah. The whole action was conducted as sacred ritual, and it moved the Dreamers. It is so important for us to show up as Jews with our religious identities.”

—Rabbi Mordechai Liebling, Director of the Social Justice Organizing Program at RRC

Deluxe: In memory of Elsie Shapiro's 15th yortzeit. We miss her every day, but we know that she is kvelling about all the important social justice work that CBST is doing. Her activism and determination to fight for justice inspires us always. We remember her fierce love for family, her devotion to protecting the weak and vulnerable, and her super strong Grandma grip. Always in our hearts. Ellen, Sabrina, and Ben.

Steven M. Fruh and Paul L. Marsolini in gratitude for the life of Dr. Mathilde Krim, z”l, who passed away on Monday, January 15. In 1991, Dr. Krim spoke to CBST at Bethune Street about the AIDS epidemic and the amfAR response.

Wylie Tene in proud support of Sabrina Farber, Harold Levine, Allison Drew Klein, and Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum who got arrested in Washington DC fighting for our Dreamers.

Noemi Masliah in honor of my father, Henri Masliah's 9th yortzeit. In honor of the many who are rising and resisting the threats to our democracy.

Adria Benjamin in memory of Henri Masliah, z”l, father of Noemi and Michele Masliah, whose 9th yortzeit is being observed this Shabbat.

Adria Benjamin in honor of my Concert for Social Justice colleagues. Your dedication to these concerts, your friendship, and your artistry are truly inspiring.

Adria Benjamin with deepest gratitude to all those in the CBST community who dedicate themselves to fulfilling CBST’s mission of Building a Community of Resistance and Love. Thank you for leading the way.

Harold Levine in honor of my Dad’s upcoming second yortzeit. Thank you Dad for giving me an unerring sense of right and wrong and the courage to take a stand. When I risked arrest in Washington DC earlier this week I thought of you enlisting in the Navy in World War II at age 17 and serving on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific, putting your life on the line for the American freedoms you prized above all else.

Laurie Siegel in memory of my mother, Molla Siegel's 48th yortzeit.

Rabbi Marisa James in honor of Rabbi Kleinbaum, Sabrina Farber, Harold Levine, Allison Drew Klein, and Tyler Watkins for standing up for Dreamers this week, and in honor of everyone who has made phone calls, written letters, and taken action to protect our immigrant friends and neighbors.
