Dear industry partners,

Let me first take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! We embark on another 12 months of challenge and opportunity – though interestingly the Chinese believe these two concepts are actually one and the same, intertwined and indivisible. I’d like to agree with them and hope that you too, in facing the challenges ahead, can constantly seek out the opportunities that lurk within.

We begin 2012 with some great credentials. The International Association of Golf Tour Operators has given our golfing proposition a boost naming Abu Dhabi ‘Golf Destination Of The Year Africa & The Middle East’. The emirate has also emerged as ‘The Middle East’s Top Destination For Personal Safety’ in the Mercer International Quality of Living Index. And from the USA comes news that the influential Travel & Leisure magazine has listed Abu Dhabi among its Top 12 ‘Hottest Destinations’ for 2012. All are powerful testimonials to leverage as we go forward in our tourism promotion.

The coming year will also, I hope, bring us much hard-earned kudos on the international MICE industry front with the staging in Q1 of the World Ophthalmology Congress – the largest convention to date to be held in the UAE capital. Other major summits are being staged here later in the year, including the 18th World Routes Development Forum and we are actively, again with stakeholders, pursuing other major convention bids. Our ‘win’ in bringing the World Travel & Tourism Council’s 2013 summit to the emirate was achieved by working hand-in-hand with Etihad - a result which shows the power of stakeholder collaboration.

Many colleagues in Abu Dhabi will now be aware that ADTA has significantly stepped up its stakeholder engagement programme by regularly holding dedicated industry development committees. At these committees, stakeholders hear of the industry’s forthcoming plans and of new private and public sector initiatives. We, in turn, listen to their concerns and try and assist in resolving them. The process is gaining momentum and we believe major strides will result from this coming together. I would like to thank all involved for their time and commitment in driving this programme forward; our New Year’s resolution here in ADTA and Abu Dhabi will be to keep the momentum going and work ever more closely with our local and international industry to ensure we are out stand-out destination with outstanding partners.

Mubarak Hamad Al MuhairiDirector General, ADTA

Dear colleagues,

Here’s to a great New Year ahead – and it’s going to be a digitally-focussed 12 months for Communications and Marketing at ADTA. Having met in a round-table with many of our stakeholders and heard their feedback on collateral you will see a number of upgrades this year, with more information and collateral moving online and becoming ‘social.’

Look out in Q1 for design and content upgrades to the consumer website visitabudhabi.ae and join our discussions as we move online with twitter, facebook and flickr. Any suggestions you have, will be keenly welcomed we are very committed to listening to stakeholders at the ‘coal face’ of the industry and delivering on their expectations.

Our stakeholder data-base has grown expansively over the past five months as more attractions, hotels and resorts have come online and an increasing number of tour operators, many in new territories, add Abu Dhabi to their destination offerings. Seyaha alone is now going to stakeholders in almost 40 countries and enquiries are coming in daily via [email protected]. This increased communications activity is good news all round – it shows that more people than ever want to know more about Abu Dhabi – and there’s certainly a lot more to tell.

As we head into a hectic Q1 with events galore, we anticipate further ramping up our dynamic media hosting programme. Many of you have assisted this programme in the past, and our thanks go to you for your readiness to help – if we continue this collaborative approach, much more can be achieved.

So here’s to a happy, productive and prosperous New Year for us all.

Education, Education, Education!

Can you run us through the education seminars?

We have strived to evolve the education sessions over the years, always with the intention that they meet the needs of the regional meetings industry. Each year we evaluate feedback from the education sessions and ensure that we put a dynamic education programme which is relevant to exhibitors, visitors and hosted buyers. For this sixth GIBTM, we think we have delivered our best line-up yet – there is an exciting mix of topical sessions, debates and sharing of best practice.

Any specific topics on the agenda for this year?

Well, there are certain topics within the meetings industry which are relevant

Abu Dhabi is in for a good business tourism year, according to the 5th Middle East Meetings Industry Research report which says that the emirate is likely to attract 48% of events planned in the MENA region this year – as opposed to 27% last year.

The upbeat prospects for the emirate’s MICE business is likely to be evident at this year’s Gulf Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition, the region’s only event dedicated to the meetings and events industry, which will run at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from March 26 - 28.

This year much of the limelight will fall on business travel. “The business and corporate travel community is an intrinsic part of the meetings industry and has been expanding steadily which is why we are making business travel a key focus at GIBTM 2012,” said Lois Hall, Reed Travel Exhibitions’ Manager for GIBTM.

“We are very happy to see increased interest in the meetings industry and our show,” added Hall. “Destinations like India and Kuwait have begun to market MICE products to specialised agencies and the corporate world at large. The industry holds enormous potential for any country. It is estimated that a person travelling to a country for a conference or convention spends anywhere from four to eight times more than a normal leisure traveller.”Gibtm.com

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) will hold its 13th Global Summit in Abu Dhabi in April/May 2013. Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) together with Etihad Airways will be the summit’s official hosts.

The UAE capital was selected for its compelling presentation, the enthusiasm of government and industry agencies, accessibility, a high standard of capability and evidence of green tourism growth as a key development strategy.

The Global Summit is considered the most influential annual travel & tourism event, bringing together almost 1,000 industry leaders, to tackle pressing issues facing the travel & tourism industry. wttc.org

globally, such as the use of technology and social media in events, and we’ll be allocating sufficient time to address these. Also, we will explore how users can gain more insight into research and trends; we are particularly proud of how our GIBTM research has grown over the years and we believe it provides a unique perspective of the region’s ever-changing meetings industry.

What can you tell us about the new Business Travel seminars?

For the first time, GIBTM is partnering with ACTE, The Association of Corporate Travel Executives, to deliver an educational track of sessions focused on the convergence of managing meetings and travel. The educational sessions will address how industry professionals are integrating the voice of the traveller and leveraging emerging technologies to enhance the management of business travel and corporate meetings. We expect these sessions to be extremely popular.

conveniently nestled within Abu Dhabi city limits, has re-opened ‘The Pavilion’ – its newly-renovated al fresco dining terrace.

With great views of the golf course, the neighbouring horse-racing track and the city, the Pavilion is a great venue for a working lunch, intimate dinner, themed evenings, corporate events or exciting product launches.

Atraditional favourite with international visitors, Abu Dhabi’s Big Bus Tour now includes Saadiyat Island on its itinerary. The world-renowned hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour, which already features all of the capital’s famous landmarks, has begun calling at the Manarat Al Saadiyat art and exhibition centre, its Al Fanr restaurant and other exciting hospitality, leisure and cultural offerings which have recently opened on the island. These include: the absolutely stunning Monte-Carlo Beach Club, Saadiyat, where guests can dine on the best of Riviera-style cuisine; the five-star St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi and Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi; the UAE Pavilion - a landmark exhibition and event venue which plays host to some of the country’s most important cultural functions and the nearby Gary Player-designed Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and its superb Hawksbill restaurant.

“Big Bus Tours always looks to grow at the pace of the city it operates in,” said Mike Lees, General Manager of Big Bus Tours, which started its Abu Dhabi operation in 2009. “Saadiyat Island, including the exhibition centre, restaurants and hotels, is an impressive development – it was an obvious choice to expand the Big Bus Tour to take-in its core attractions.”

The Abu Dhabi Big Bus Tour offers a unique sightseeing experience onboard its signature double-decker buses, the king of all sightseeing vehicles. Passengers can design their own itinerary and hop-on and hop-off at any of Abu Dhabi’s 11 stops. the town’s tallest buildings. Now, following a 21-month renovation, which has seen all the hotel’s 114 rooms refurbished, redesigned or completely rebuilt, the property is also among its most modern dwellings, too.

The remodeling work has been worth the wait. The hotel’s spacious, well-appointed rooms are among the largest in Abu Dhabi, while the shiny, new, en suite bathrooms – complete with gigantic baths and rain showers – are simply luxurious. Every room – the hotel offers deluxe, standard or club types, as well as an array of suites – also comes with a huge balcony.

Communally, Mirfa Hotel is awash with recreational facilities. Guests who leave their sea legs at home can take their pick from tennis, basketball, volleyball or a high-tech gymnasium, even a sauna and steam room. Elsewhere, the hotel’s restaurant offers “the best catches in the Gulf”, while the newly-opened Sports Bar is the perfect place to relax after an energy-sapping day on the high seas.

A popular, traditional stop-off point for Saudi tourists travelling to Abu Dhabi by road, the new-look Mirfa Hotel is aiming to attract a greater share of weekend relaxers, corporate guests and international visitors to

In sleepy Mirfa, a picturesque town only 90 minutes drive from Abu Dhabi city, the Mirfa Hotel cuts an imposing figure. Historically populated by fishermen and other sea-dependent tradesmen, rural Mirfa’s low-laying skyline – completely absent of skyscrapers and other physical embodiments of the emirate’s unabated race to modernity - epitomises the diversity of Abu Dhabi’s geographic landscape.

complement its current long-stay clients. To help realise its objectives, several new initiatives are on the horizon.

The hotel has already agreed a deal with the local municipality to exclusively operate an area of the adjacent public beach. Only a five-minute walk from reception, the hotel provides complimentary transfers to the tranquil beach, which is a handy alternative to the property’s spectacular ocean-front swimming pool. To enhance its appeal to potential guests, the beach will welcome its very own, unlicensed bar in coming weeks.

Later this year, a new jetty and Al Gharbia’s first specialist dive centre – to be operated by Western Marina Sports Club, a homegrown watersports and marine-based leisure tourism provider which manages the hotel’s extensive activities programme - will come online, further strengthening Mirfa Hotel’s leisure credentials and ability to woo adrenaline-seeking guests.

The hotel’s existing meeting facilities, which include a 30-person conference hall with adjoining workshop spaces, 150-capacity banquet hall and two specialist meeting rooms, represent the final stage of the renovations process. Work should be complete later this year.

For an added cost, Mirfa Hotel can also provide transfers from Abu Dhabi city or Dubai for up to seven people at a time. For additional information, contact the hotel directly on +9712 8833030, or email [email protected]

instantaneous impact the WMSC has had on Mirfa and the hotel which carries it name, is only the beginning – Tameen’s mind is on expansion.

“In five years I want the Club to have strong foundations and branches across every city, in every emirate, of the UAE. Then we can think of how we take the Club worldwide – that is the dream,” smiles Tameem, who twins a well-groomed and neatly-shaven appearance with the sort of mischievous, sparkling stare that is, unmistakably, the look of someone deeply entrenched on an exciting mission.

Resolutely hands-on, Tameem’s passion has won him friends in high places. A two-pronged plan to boost Al Gharbia’s appeal to domestic and international visitors by leveraging the area’s abundant environmental

Aided by financial support from the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development, Tameem has launched the Western Marine Sports Club (WMSC). Half watersport service provider, half socially-conscious, community-centric members association, the WMSC immediately won its first contract: to implement and manage an extensive programme of leisure activities at the recently-renovated, four-star Mirfa Hotel.

Formerly occupied by swimmers and sunbathers, the hotel’s beach is now crowded with kayaks, paddleboards, wakeboards and kite-surfing equipment - not to mention an eye-catching collection of boats ready to ferry thrill seeking mariners from the sandy trappings of land to a watery world of adventure.

The scene, a living demonstration of the

resources, then, in-turn, using the improved facilities and infrastructure to encourage more UAE nationals to get their feet wet, has gained government approval.

In no way tokenistic, the top-level support recognised Tameem’s plan to reinvest revenue generated via the Club’s core watersports business into grassroots programmes for the local population, as well as international events to help woo tourists to Al Gharbia.

“It is one of the ways we will generate income to stage more races and tournaments for the local community,” admits Tameem. “The WMSC business model is based on three core principles: Sports, Environment and Tourism. Our international events are part the sporting side, but keeping the momentum year-round is bigger, it’s more important.”

While the annual, 10-day Al Gharbia Watersports Festival, held in the second quarter of every year – pulls in adrenaline junkies from across the world to compete in everything from Dragon boating and kite surfing to dhow racing and swimming – has encouraged swathes of junior, local copycats, Tameem is keen to establish

believes he has engineered a roadmap to balancing economic priorities with social responsibilities. The preferred route is simple: both carry equal importance.

“I am always thinking about where the value is; is it for the sport, the hotel, the visitor, or the region? I like to think that we are at our best when we incorporate all four,” he says. “The Western Region has the longest stretches of coast in the UAE, we must look after it. A watersports programme coming to the Mirfa Hotel is positive, but we must also protect the Al Mirfa channel environment - this is important to us, so is raising awareness of Al Gharbia’s natural environment. It is not our objective to do this, it is our basic principal.”

Upgrading Al Gharbia’s existing watersport facilities to cater for the inevitable increase in visitors remains an ongoing project. Take the Mirfa Hotel, where work on a new jetty - one capable of accommodating a larger and more diverse range of vessels - begins in January. The new dock, including the expected boon it will bring to the island’s sole property, will be followed later in the month with the opening of a purpose-built dive centre.

The first such facility in Mirfa and Al Gharbia, the centre will be operated exclusively by WMSC and will significantly enhance the area’s adventure tourism capacity. With “two, maybe three” more coming next year, Tameem’s impact has been instantaneous. The next step is expanding the WMSC across various Western Region destinations, with each station having its own directive.

And yet, with such ambitiously grand growth plans, Tameem plans to stay at the helm of his boats; being stuck behind an administration desk does not appeal.

“It is about Emiratis being ambassadors because local knowledge, as I see it, determines the entire visitor experience. If you want to know where the best wrecks, dhows and reefs are you should ask me or someone from Mirfa because it was probably one of us that dived and discovered them over the years. We know the local traditions, names and history, because it is ours.”

At present, discussions with Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) about how WMSC can expand the watersport and leisure tourism activities on offer at its five-star resort on Sir Bani Yas Island are ongoing and the immediate future looks bright for Tameem. In typical, bullish style though, he is already processing the next stage of his plan: developing homegrown watersports stars.

“Much will depend on the development of local athletes and how they adapt to the international stage; but they are the ones who will take us global. The potential of WMSC is huge.”

Action man Tameem: “It is impossible to practice only one sport when you can do everything in Mirfa.”

As part of the five-building Capital Plaza complex, the Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche enjoys pride of place on the eastern tip of the capital’s pristine Corniche beachfront - one of the emirate’s prestigious districts and right in the hustle and bustle of Abu Dhabi’s city’s downtown precinct.

The eye-catching location will, over the next three years, come even more to the fore as the region’s largest collection of cultural institutions – including the Louvre Abu Dhabi - come online in the Cultural District on neighbouring Saadiyat Island.

From its opening, however, guests at the art deco-inspired Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche can take solace in panoramic city and sea views overlooking the picturesque Lulu Island, as well as Mina Zayed Port and Dhow Harbour – home to hundreds of traditional wooden fishing boats.

Inside the elegantly configured five-star property, 282 rooms and suites boast the latest technology and marry contemporary French design with heavy oriental influences. The Sofitel’s guestrooms include 48 suites and 57 rooms offering exclusive access to the Club Millesime Lounge, which covers the hotel’s top two floors.

Every room comes with the chain’s ‘My Bed’ promise – a fantastic service that allows guests to personalise their mattress and pillow selection, while customised butler services and in-room spa treatments extend the royal treatment. Elsewhere, the stunning 425-square-metre Royal Suite - on the 35th floor – is quite literally fit for a king or queen.

For the more business-minded guests, the hotel boasts a gigantic conference and convention centre that covers nearly 2,600metres². Completely serviced by independent access, the facility caters for all types of gathering - from 15-person meeting rooms to a grand ballroom that can accommodate up to 1,000 guests.

Additionally, six meeting rooms and three board rooms are classed as ‘daylight’ options. Our guess is that it might be a bit of a tease seeing how bright and sunny the outside weather is while you toil away at work, but infinitely more preferable than being stuck in a windowless room.

Rosewoods Hotels and Resorts, the US-based luxury hotel chain, will open its first Abu Dhabi and UAE property in 2012.

Combining 189 rooms and 137 fully-serviced residences, the 34-storey Rosewood Abu Dhabi will be one of the first hotels on Sowwah Island - an area destined to become Abu Dhabi’s new Central Business District and the future home of the Securities & Stock Exchange, several commercial and residential towers, as well as the Cleveland Medical Clinic.

The towering property will offer panoramic vistas of Abu Dhabi city, as well as Saadiyat and Yas islands, although taking in the beautiful views will depend on whether guests can tear themselves away from the iPad navigation systems, 55 inch televisions and twin vanity and rain showers that will adorn every spacious room.

With the Rosewood collection’s rich history for providing ultra-luxury service, the Abu Dhabi property will also offer the finest level of contemporary butler service for all its guests. Along with the exceptional in-room technology, Rosewood hopes the bespoke butler service will secure significant high-end custom.

“Understanding guest preferences and tuning in to the individual needs of guests will be one of Rosewood Abu Dhabi’s principle objectives,” said Luigi Romaniello, the hotel’s Managing Director.

Another objective will be leveraging its three KSA properties by capitalising on Abu Dhabi’s growing popularity among Saudi Arabian leisure travellers. “Rosewood has a solid footing in the Kingdom and is a popular choice for inbound leisure and business guests, as well Saudi nationals holidaying domestically,” added Romaniello. “With so many Saudis now taking personal or professional trips to Abu Dhabi, we anticipate that we

will benefit from their support.” Elsewhere, eight mouth-watering restaurants will

enhance the collection’s international reputation for culinary excellence, with highlights including a Catalan themed concept specialising in the Northern Spanish cuisine; Sambusek, a modern Lebanese option; Smoke, an outdoor shisha bar with live fire pits cooking up red hot embers for shisha smokers; La Cava, an intimate wine cellar complete with experienced sommeliers and a ‘Private Reserve’ where guests will be able to sample some of the world’s rarest vintages and prized cognacs, or puff away in a walk-in cigar room; and Aqua, an all-day dining premise.

From a conferencing perspective, the hotel is ideally placed to host blue chip conferences, with two ballrooms providing flexible venue for major events. Beyond the business facilities the Rosewood Abu Dhabi has a large Rosewood Sense- Spa and a high end shopping precinct bringing together luxury brands and high street favourites. Rosewoodhotels.com

Although the capital’s three championship-ready courses – all within a 25-minute radius of each other – are mainstay Golf in Abu Dhabi products, the initiative extends to all the emirate’s playing facilities. Additional course options include an idyllic 18-hole country course at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club in the emirate’s heritage heartland; a floodlit, nine-hole downtown course at Abu Dhabi City Golf Club; and a unique 18-hole sand course at Al Ghazal Golf Club – the emirate’s only true sand golf experience.

“Our dynamic and diverse offering goes beyond the capital’s intriguing mix of parkland, ocean and Links style championship courses. With half a dozen different playing experiences, tourists visiting Abu Dhabi can play a contrasting course, with varying challenges, for six straight days over a standard week-long break.

“We have some stunning properties and the highest standards of service in our Golf in Abu Dhabi team will ensure any golf break is a great end-to-end experience,” added Lim.

To capitalise on the emirate’s heightened affordability, a variety of Golf in Abu Dhabi launch packages are already available, while extended ‘Golf Plus’ products – incorporating various leisure and cultural activities in personalised, golf-centric itineraries – are due to come online in coming months.

Abu Dhabi aims to up the emirate’s ante in the global golf tourism market

- estimated to be worth US$17billion annually, according to the International Association of Golf Tourism Operators (IAGTO).

Key source markets, including the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Scandinavia, China, Korea and Japan are being targeted with packages that cover golf-centric itineraries both as the primary purpose of a visit, or as part of an engaging destination experience.

Crucially, Golf in Abu Dhabi - which has its own unique promotional identity, web portal, trade distribution and consumer booking channels - carries exclusive, highly attractive rates at Abu Dhabi’s three championship-ready courses - Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, Abu Dhabi Golf Club and Yas Links Golf Club.

With the capacity to competitively streamline all aspects of the booking procedure by bundling ancillary add-ons - such as flights, hotels and the on-the-ground transportation - into one package at source, the initiative is tasked with driving footfall at courses across Abu Dhabi’s diverse golf tourism portfolio.

“The potential is immense and our competitive positioning will be considerably sharpened through active inter-stakeholder collaborations. Golf in Abu Dhabi will ensure that all our relevant stakeholders collectively work towards capturing a bigger slice of the global golf tourism market,” said Dayne Lim, Product Development Director, ADTA.

“Our goal now is to entice the world’s amateur

18-hole National Course - ranked among the World’s Top 100 courses by Golf World magazine – Abu Dhabi Golf Club is presided over by arguably the Middle East’s most iconic clubhouse: a vast winged falcon perched atop a golf ball. The Par 36, floodlit Garden Course is also the perfect place for a spot of night golf on a championship-standard facility.

Abu Dhabi Scoops Prestigious IAGTO HonourAbu Dhabi has been named ‘Golf Destination Of

The Year Africa & Gulf States 2012’ in the prestigious International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) awards, which sees over 380 specialised operators from 55 countries vote for the golf destinations viewed as the best performing by their clients.

Abu Dhabi beat off competition from nine contenders, including five other shortlisted candidates: Dubai, Kenya, Marrakesh in Morocco, Mauritius and the Western Cape in South Africa.

In voting for their preferred winners, operators judged against criteria which included customer satisfaction, quality of golf courses and accommodation, value for money, professional conduct of suppliers, support from the local tourist industry and accessibility to tee times.

“This is a major fillip in our goal of strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a preferred golfing destination – a niche and high-yielding tourism sector which has been prioritised in our product, promotional and industry collaboration strategies,” said ADTA’s Dayne Lim. “The emirate’s golf offering has come a long way in recent years and is now dynamic and diverse. We believe this diversity is giving us a significant competitive edge.”

The seventh annual Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship will take place at Abu Dhabi Golf Club from 26 - 29 January and - for the first time – former world number one Tiger Woods is in the field!

One of the world’s most famous athletes, Woods will fight for the newly-commissioned Falcon trophy alongside defending champion Martin Kaymer and the world’s current top three - Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood.

With organisers aiming to “at least double” the current four-day attendance record of 40,000 spectators, Woods, who has 14 Major wins to his name and holds the record for most consecutive weeks spent as the game’s top ranked player, is destined to be a huge draw.

As the world’s leading masterchefs, pâtissiers and châteaux ready for

February’s Gourmet Abu Dhabi - the emirate’s annual, fortnight-long

culinary festival and one of its prime corporate entertainment options - a

record number of host venues will welcome mouth-watering epicurean

promotions and entertain guests during the event’s fourth showing. The

increase in potential host venues, Seyaha discovers, evidences Abu

Dhabi’s increasingly diverse haute cuisine options…

At a whopping 20, the number of host venues for Gourmet Abu Dhabi 2012 - running February 9 - 23 - is 20 per cent higher than any previous showing.

While the increase can largely be attributed to a handful of five-star hotels – all of which opened in the last quarter of 2011 - throwing their new outlets into the Gourmet Abu Dhabi fray, the growth in host venues also illustrates the emirate’s evolving food and beverage scene.

Crucially, only seven of this year’s score of host venues featured in 2009’s inaugural festival, while another five will participate for a third year-in-a-row after debuting in 2010. Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club also return after joining

the line-up last year, leaving Ushna - an independent, modern Indian restaurant in Souk Qaryat Al Beri - and the five hotel newcomers to complete the 2012 roster.

“This year’s host venue line-up is the best that Abu Dhabi has to offer,” explained Noura Al Dhaheri of ADTA’s Product Development Division. “The host venue list, which features both returning favourites and some of the finest new restaurants to have opened up in Abu Dhabi over the last nine months, is a ringing endorsement of the emirate’s maturing fine dining credentials.”

With an international line-up of 18 elite Masterchefs from 12 countries - a total of 21 Michelin stars shared among them; six pâtissiers, including Paco Torreblanca,

With a record field of 2,100 participants, up 600 on 2011, being targeted for the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon 2012, the third event in the annual series will, for the first time, feature a race route that takes in some of the flagship development projects on Saadiyat Island.

The all-new Saadiyat loop will take in Manarat Al Saadiyat, a multi-purpose art and exhibition centre, as well as the island’s recently-opened St. Regis and Park Hyatt hotel properties. The swim leg has also been switched from the Emirates Palace hotel to the Eastern Plaza public beach.

“Our decision to expand the event’s capacity is in direct response to increased demand both internationally and locally with more than 1,200 athletes already pre-registered,” said Faisal Al Sheikh, Events Manager, ADTA. “For returnees there will be new challenges in store as we are planning significant route upgrades to raise the bar and bring added variety to the triathlon.”

As has been the case in previous years, the local and international field will again contest three race distances. The 223km main ‘long course’ boasts a gruelling 3km swim, a 200km cycle and 20km closing run. The ‘short’ course, at half the length, has a 1.5km swim, a 100km cycle and a 10 km run, while the sprint course – which returns after a successful 2011 debut and can be run as a team relay - has a 750m swim, a 50km bike and 5km run.

The Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan, only a few minutes minutes from Abu Dhabi Corniche, is the ‘Official Event Hotel’, while the Aloft Hotel has been named a ‘Preferred Hotel’ and will offer competitive rates to competitors and also help with bike storage.

Sign up for the 2012 event is still open, with athlete registration fees frozen for the third year in a row. Athletes interested in entering should visit www.abudhabitriathlon.com and, after clicking on the ENTER NOW link, simply follow the instructions. Entry fees for the long and short distances are US $190 (AED 695) and US $130 (AED 475), respectively, while Sprint courses rates are US $75 (AED 275) for individuals and US $120 (AED440) for a team. Final Calls for Shanghai, Nairobi & Tripoli Etihad Airways, the UAE national carrier, will begin

daily, non-stop return services from Shanghai – China’s most populous city – to Abu Dhabi International on March 1 significantly boosting capacity in one of Abu Dhabi’s key inbound source markets.

Etihad will operate an Airbus A330 - 200 aircraft on the Shanghai-Abu Dhabi route, configured in Pearl Business and Coral Economy class.

And that’s not all, as Etihad will also start daily services from Nairobi as of April 1. Operated by a two-class A320 aircraft, with 16 Pearl Business class and 120

Coral Economy seats, Nairobi will be a new link between East Africa and the UAE capital.

Other point-to-point services from Africa to the UAE are on Etihad Airways’ radar, revealed James Hogan, the award-winning carrier’s CEO. “Our strategy is to target areas of strong growth in emerging economies such as North, East and Central Africa and we have a number of other destinations under active consideration.”

Tripoli will likely be Etihad’s next new African destination, with the airline putting the final touches to a thrice-weekly schedule from the Libyan capital at the time of going to press.

According to the latest figures, Abu Dhabi expects 77 calls from cruise ships in the current 2011 / 12 regional cruise season. The calls - depending on occupancy rates - will deliver upwards of 200,000 cruise passengers to the emirate, with passenger expenditure substantially boosted by an estimated 50,000 cruise liner crew also visiting Abu Dhabi before the season ends in April.

With increasingly large operators and luxurious, goliath-like vessels driving the growth, Abu Dhabi is also seeing an increasing number of smaller, boutique operators expand in to the emirate. The trend, believes ADTA’s Lawrence Franklin, Director, Strategy & Policy Division, is certain to continue.

“ADTA has a strategic commitment to the expansion of cruise tourism in Abu Dhabi and major operators with larger ships are a key component of this,” says Franklin. “However, the growth of small ship cruising in our destination is also keenly anticipated and adds an exciting new dimension to overall sector growth.”

The reason for the excitement, as Franklin expands, is simple: smaller ships can dock at remote locations that just cannot cater to larger vessels. It is these more bespoke vessels, Franklin continues, that allow optimum opportunities for visitors to discover the hidden treasures of Abu Dhabi’s tourism map.

“Abu Dhabi has more to offer cruise visitors than a world-class city experience. We have a fabulous product and a majestic marine environment, including many natural islands with a history stretching back thousands of years,” says Franklin.

The ability to leverage new sites of interest – especially ones that can enliven and enrich the itinerary of any operator seeking to deliver fresh Arabian-based history, heritage and culture to their discerning clientele - into regional cruise voyages, give smaller ships a unique selling point, adds Franklin.

“Many of these experiences are only truly accessible - for reasons of infrastructure, navigability, cultural or environmental carrying capacity - to smaller ships, where size and limited passenger capacity can promote

24

Page 25: Seyaha Abu Dhabi No.10

intimate experiences in special places. We are looking at ways to introduce destination highlights, including Sir Bani Yas Island - a sanctuary for endangered Arabian wildlife and home to 36 archaeological sites, including a 1,400 year old Nestorian Monastery – into the itineraries of smaller ship operators.”

The potential, Franklin concludes, is limitless. “Another candidate port-of-call for small ships is Delma Island - once home to a thriving pearling trade and 200 fresh water wells that made it an historical hub for water trading. Delma is one of the UAE’s oldest known permanent settlements, with a human history dating back 7,500 years. It, like many historical and culturally significant sites in the Western Region, would make for a fascinating stop-off port for smaller ships.”

Off To The Opera…With MSC Cruises’ majestic MSC Lirica liner - the

first major international cruise ship to home-port in Abu Dhabi – a regular sight at Mina Zayed Port this winter, the Italian operator has revealed plans to send an even larger vessel, MSC Opera, to the emirate next season.

The strategic re-positioning of the 867-cabin MSC Opera will see the larger vessel - due to sail 25 week-long cruises in the 2012 / 13 season - add a further 13,000 passengers to the 41,000 cruise arrivals MSC Lirica will bring to Abu Dhabi this season.

“This is just the beginning of a great new era of cruise tourism in Abu Dhabi and for MSC Cruises in the area,”

ADTA estimates MSC Lirica’s maiden home port season in Abu Dhabi will generate a direct economic impact of up to US$22million on tourism, airlines, accommodation, retail, transport, food and beverage and attraction sectors.Msccruises.com

Abu Dhabi’s ‘Variety’ ShowAbu Dhabi is the sole UAE port-of-call for Greece-

itineraries, running from November 2012 to April 2013. The one-way, seven-night cruise package will embark from Abu Dhabi or Muscat (the capital of Oman) aboard

The Arabian Journeys have been carefully designed to ensure guests step off the ship and into a new port of call every day. With sideline activities including traditional dhow sailing, island lunches and desert or mountain excursions, the itinerary covers several coastal stops along the Musandam Peninsula, while numerous ancient forts and citadels come into view both from the ship and once on land.

Fares for the Arabian Journeys begin from $2,790 per person, per week, based on double occupancy, and include accommodation in double or twin cabins with private bathrooms and air conditioning; American buffet breakfast and two main meals daily; use of fishing equipment (subject to availability); coffee, water or tea; and an English speaking cruise escort. Port charges are an additional $290 per person.

Abu Dhabi entry underscores both the ongoing maturity

of the Middle East cruise segment, as well the numerous opportunities the sector presents to the emirate’s mainline tourism stakeholders.

“Abu Dhabi based arrivals or departures at either end of the schedule provide similar benefits to home porting,” insists Franklin. “Pre- or post-cruise accommodation, air fares and ship provisioning all deliver economic benefits and expose often wealthier, well-travelled clientele to everything Abu Dhabi has to offer. Our challenge in the short term is to encourage

market is responding with owners upgrading to larger yachts. The demand for charter yachts naturally follows as people see these luxury yachts in the popular marinas and cruising areas.

How does Abu Dhabi rate as a yacht charter destination? With some 200 natural islands, Abu Dhabi has so

much potential and looks particularly suited to the luxury segment with bespoke packages for high-end clients. The emirate just has so much diversity, from sheltered anchorages and small island resorts, to protected marine environments and numerous great dive sites. In terms of cruising, the choice of where to go and what to do is better than anywhere else in the Gulf.

Is there a particular area of Abu Dhabi’s charter market that you believe Eden Yachting is best suited to target?

A large slice of our work in the region is with premium clients through private member business clubs, top hotels, international event companies and concierge services. We also receive many enquiries through our website from direct clients who are based in the UK, Germany and Russia. The market will grow and mature; to attract high spending international visitors who are used to chartering in the Mediterranean, it simply has to. Are you currently partnering any Abu Dhabi hotels or tour operators to boost your market share?

We do not currently have any partnerships with hotels or tour operators in Abu Dhabi, but we are seeing an increasing number of enquiries for yacht charter as Abu Dhabi pushes ahead with its objective to become a world-class tourism destination.

World-class events like Formula One™ and the Volvo Ocean Race, as well as the ever-improving marine infrastructure popping up across the emirate, are increasing charter demand - what else can be done to drive the industry forward?

There is no doubt that these world class events are putting Abu Dhabi in the global spotlight and pushing the industry forward, mostly in terms of awareness rather than infrastructure. However there is still very limited media coverage and a low level of interest in the marine industry. Once a professional operator enters the market with a fleet of owned and/or managed luxury yachts I think the landscape will change very rapidly and others will follow. Abu Dhabi needs this if the local charter industry is going to attract top international clients.

Stylish, elegant and infinitely more than just a big boy’s toy, the Mutahida simulator takes time to master – it’s all about light touches and gradual maneuvres, according to the knowledgeable ‘stationmasters’ that are on-hand at all times to make sure guests navigate the countless knobs, screens and gauges adorning the cockpit.

And when guests are done, they can buy a souvenir film courtesy of two miniature cockpit cameras that capture all the action first-hand.

Simulator sessions can be booked at www.mutahida.com where flight times and dates can be selected in advance*. Alternatively, Al Forsan members and walk-in guests can book on-site at the resort.

OSTING world-class sporting events in Abu Dhabi serves many purposes. Crucially, globally televised events, such

Prix, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and the Mubadala World Tennis Championships, raise the international profile of Abu Dhabi to potential inbound visitors.

Inevitably, marquee events also bring the world’s leading athletes – from a veritable A to Z of sports – to the emirate. More often than not, the shining stars of court, field, track, pitch and fairway, leave Abu Dhabi espousing the warm Arabian hospitality on offer. Whether intentional or accidental, internationally-recognised sports stars become destination ambassadors for Abu Dhabi.

Another effect, one beginning to gain serious momentum, has been catalysed by both the above factors. That’s because increasingly, these sports stars - most of whom contest gruelling, year-round schedules

that leave little ‘home’ time – are returning to Abu Dhabi outside of their event appearances to relax, train, or, usually, both.

Abu Dhabi’s maturing sports facility, leisure activity and tourism infrastructure are serving as a beacon and wooing specialist athletes – both teams and individuals – to use the emirate as a training base away from the clamour and spectacle of headline events. Ultimately, they like what they see and want to see and do more.

Indeed, for every Faris Al Sultan, the world Ironman champion of 2005, and Abu Dhabi Triathlon Team, an ADTA-supported outfit that works towards peak pre-season fitness on the quiet, flat asphalt roads of Al Ain, there is an Ian Thorpe – the five Olympic gold medal winning swimmer chose to gear up for his long-awaited comeback at this summer’s London Games in the Olympic-size pool at Abu Dhabi’s Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel.

They are not alone. Serbian tennis hotshot, Novak

Djokovic, the current world number one and reigning holder of three of the game’s four Grand Slams, spent a fortnight in the emirate ahead of December’s Mubadala World Tennis Championships, while English Premier League giants, Manchester City, conduct annual warm-weather training sessions at the purpose-built football pitch and training centre at Emirates Palace hotel - a facility that was also used by Carlton Football Club, a Melbourne-based professional Australian rules team, during its pre-season trip to Abu Dhabi last November.

Carlton spent several ‘team building days’ at Al Forsan International Sports Resort, an ultra-modern, multi-sport and leisure resort just five minutes drive from Abu Dhabi International Airport, which has the emirate’s first wakeboarding park, as well extensive paintball, karting, horse-riding and shooting facilities. Needless to say, the Aussies were impressed with what they encountered.

“The activities designed by your staff were perfect for an international sports team with many of the players stating that the visit to Al Forsan was one of the highlights of our week long trip,” Greg Swann, the club’s CEO, wrote in a letter to Atef Nagib, his Al Forsan counterpart.

And it is not only professionals turning their attention to the emirate. Leading amateur golfers representing Scotland – ‘The Home of Golf’ – were in Abu Dhabi last November for a month of warm weather training and activities designed to enhance ties with the UAE national squad.

The First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, believes that Scotland’s choice to send the future of its professional representation to Abu Dhabi and one

of the world’s finest golf facilities, Yas Links Golf Club, illustrates the growing significance of the emirate as a leading golf destination.

“Not only was the trip a great opportunity for the Scottish squad to benefit from the fantastic facilities and weather, it was another example of how we are strengthening ties between Scotland and Abu Dhabi, which will certainly generate valuable golf and tourism links between us. I look forward to watching our relationship grow,” said Salmond.

South of the Scottish border, and England’s cricket team will play their Pakistani peers in a series of Test, One Day Internationals and Twenty20 matches in Abu Dhabi’s futuristic Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium during January and February. The emirate, specifically the gloriously manicured cricket pitch at Emirates Palace hotel, is also a regular stop-off destination for all-star cricket side Lashings World XI, while the Guernsey Cricket Board, which is closely linked to Sussex County Cricket Club, a professional team in the UK, are due to visit Abu Dhabi in March / April on a fact-finding and reconnaissance mission.

New facilities and developments should ensure the trend continues. Four indoor/outdoor FIFA Grade 1 artificial grass pitches at The Dome@Rawdhat convinced arguably the world’s most famous sporting institution, English football club Manchester United, to open a Soccer School in Abu Dhabi last year, while Al Ain’s Wadi Adventure - the region’s first man-made white-water rafting, kayaking and surfing facility – looks destined to attract its fair share of international visitors.Visitabudhabi.com

HE Spa Association’s trends report for 2012 holds out promise

for Abu Dhabi’s spa destinations by predicting an increase in demand for

ancient treatments, including hammams, and by forecasting spa resorts will become

gathering places for groups and families. All of this could be music to the ears of the

latest spa operators to enter the market, including the five-star Rocco Forte Hotel Abu Dhabi.

The luxury property - the chain’s first in the Middle East - has quite literally ‘gone big’ on its spa and wellness centre. With separate male and female facilities that include indoor relaxation pools, plunge pools, thermo-experience showers, a sauna, 15 spa and treatment rooms, five private Hammam treatment areas and numerous steam rooms, the 2,300 square metre Mizan (translating

as balance)is the largest facility of its kind in the emirate.

Headed by Morgane Lefrançois Chéoux, the current 24-strong team is expected to expand to 30 by April.

“The spa industry is maturing very quickly in Abu Dhabi; people are realising that spas are not just about beauty and pampering, they are increasingly about wellness, stress management and a specific lifestyle,” explained Morgane. “Our treatments are

not medical, but through stimulation or relaxation we can address our customers’ inner balance and improve their quality of life. It is a matter of prevention – a healthy, happy life is usually a longer, more content life.

“Spas are a vital revenue-generating tool in that they allow hotels to capture more guests and increase both length of stay and average guest spend.”

In addition to providing a vast range of spa and wellness treatments, Mizan operates the Middle East’s first ‘My Wellness Key’ facility – a system that allows continued monitoring of an individual’s exercise progress based upon tailored, customised fitness and wellness package programmes developed by the hotel’s personal trainers. Amazingly, the system simply uses a USB with integrated pedometer that is compatible with equipment

in the hotel’s gym and fitness centre. Another unique Mizan feature are specialist pre-

natal programmes that include nutritional advice for mothers-to-be, along with specialist massages, yoga and aquarobics all supervised by specially certified trainers and midwives.

But arguably Mizan’s most luxurious service is

uses fresh, spring water and adjustable, full-body jets to create a revitalising double massage effect.

Abu Dhabi has a hot new fine dining destination: the Amador Restaurant and Cellar, revered three Michelin-starred Chef Juan Amador’s new signature fine dining concept at Abu Dhabi’s five-star Park Rotana hotel.

“The restaurant will serve a combination of European and Arabian cuisine and mix a variety of cultures, flavours and aromas – it will combine characteristics of my existing cuisine and also what I learned about local tastes, products and ingredients when I visited earlier in the year,” said Chef Amador, who will operate out of his first Middle East venture during February’s fourth

Gourmet Abu Dhabi festival.“Abu Dhabi is now full of great restaurants, but I

think our Spanish-influenced avant-garde cuisine can have a very positive influence on the emirate’s culinary scene.”

The restaurant, which will formally open its doors on February 9th, will be divided between a formal dining environment that will accommodate between 54 and 88 covers, and a more informal tapas cellar, which will have a capacity of 77 guests.

Amador, whose tongue-tingling epicurean promotions wowed diners at last year’s Gourmet Abu Dhabi, predicted his new Rotana restaurant will not disappoint the industry-insiders who have tipped it to raise the bar among Abu Dhabi’s haute cuisine options.

“Day-time custom provides any restaurant with substantial revenue, so it was very important for me and Rotana to find a way of incorporating a casual, relaxed setting within the restaurant - and that is why we settled on the tapas cellar concept,” said Chef Amador. “The cellar will remain open in the evening, but we expect the main restaurant to come to the fore when the sun goes down.”

Sascha Bartz, General Manager, Park Rotana, believes the new restaurant will cement the Abu Dhabi-based chain’s reputation for culinary excellence.

“This fantastic new addition to Rotana’s portfolio of world-class, award-winning restaurants will arguably be our flagship restaurant,” said Bartz. “The staff will consist of elite employees recruited within Rotana and members of Chef Amador’s expansive European team – it is the best of the best.”Rotana.com
