Setup Cubase 5x for use with Korg NanoKontrol
So, you bought a Korg NanoKontrol huh? Have Cubase 5.x and want a useful and inexpensive way to operate it remotely? Me too and that led to this tome. I do music, not tomes but in this case I’ll take a wack at it as I found out - THIS is a gizmo I needed all along!
Simple steps are good so;
1) Image your box. Make sure Cubase is NOT running nor little else. Install NOT the drivers that came with your Nano, instead download the latest for your operating system directly from Korg. I had trouble with the driver version on the disk I received with my Nano.
2) Reboot.
3) Make sure all is hooked up properly and fire up Cubase 5.x
4) I’ll describe the steps as we go. These are screen shot pictures but what you see should be at least close to these examples.
Notice the CC#’s listed in the boxes. These are the default MIDI Control Change numbers for scene 1 and we’ll be needing them soon enough.
This is the “Devices” pulldown. NO, you don’t select “Generic Remote”. Instead, goto “Device Setup”. What you installed from Korg is a driver that allows USB to talk MIDI. You will actually be installing a new MIDI
device, NOT a USB device.
At this point, you should see something similar to this screen. Notice the NanoKontrol MIDI In and Out. Make sure that they are both set to
“Active”.
If you do not see the NanoKontrol MIDI ports, something likely got hosed during your installation of the Korg drivers. You DID re-boot, right??
IF you have to re-install these drivers, you might consider first restoring that image you made before starting all this. I had troubles with this
though admittedly NOT with the newer, downloaded drivers. Still, I’m a careful man and pain hurts.
Using the “Add” (+) button you should see something similar to this screen. Unfortunately the NanoKontrol is not amongst the remote control
template options furnished by Steinberg so select “Generic Remote” as you’ll be rolling your own.
Make sure that the MIDI In and MIDI Out are set to the NanoKontrol and NOT your regular MIDI interface..
You are free to customize your Nano/Cubase mind meld. I decided that I wanted the 9 Nano faders in scene 1 to control the first 9 channels in
Cubase. There are 4 “Scenes” available so in theory, you could control up to 36 channels or do other cool stuff such as “goto markers”.
In the top pane, note the “Address” field. Those numbers map to the NanoKontrol CC#’s shown on page 1 so edit the numbers to match. I decided that vertical faders control channel volume, the top button on
each channel of the Nano should control “Mute”, the lower button “Record Enable” and the top fader “Pan”.
In the bottom pane pay close attention to the “Value/Action” field. Poke around those fields to see just what your Nano can Kontrol. Most fields
including titles can be edited.
You might notice that my fader #1 setting is incorrect. I wanted to make sure you weren’t sleeping.
Setting up your Transport keys is pretty much the same except pay attention to the “Device” and “Value/Action” settings. The first 3 of my settings are what they claim but I have Rewind set to fast wind in reverse and Fast Forward the same forward. My “loop” button is set to return to marker location 1 in Cubase. I may set up a scene to jump to markers.
I have included the .Xml file that I “Exported” doing what I’ve described here. “Import” it. If nothing else, it’s a good starting point.
Take that NanoKontrol and engage Jean Luc.
