OBJECTIVES

• To increase awareness of the materials available from the WiPP website – Self Care for People Project

• To develop an understanding of how the training manuals can be used

• To consider SCSTC as a cost efficient way of managing workloads

• To understand the staged process for implementing the SCST courses

• To gather ideas on building capacity to run courses within own organisation

• Flexible training course – 9 hours – peer led

• 6 activities (1 hr 30 mins)

• Physical aspects of health – healthy eating and exercise

Training Package for SCS Trainers

• Ideally trainers will have completed the SCST course as a participant

• Will undertake 2, 3 or 5 day training, depending on experience and qualifications

• Upon successful completion will have a comprehensive training package to cascade SCST course to others

WHO SHOULD FACILITATE SELF CARE COURSES?

• At the Citizen’s Summit, 33% said they thought support for self care should come from a trained peer.

Deliver the Self Care Skills Training Course – identify possible trainees (6 Activities 1 hr 20 mins per activity)

Run level one – Training the Trainer Course – 3 days with future Trainers

Identify Community Workers or Volunteer Trainers ie future course deliverers

Identify two experienced Trainers in the Organisation or PCT

Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (2001)

Prevalence of depression 26% - 36%. Stress and Anxiety higher.

Of these - 75% present to the GP.

Of these, only 50% recognised as 80% present to GP with somatisation.

Of these only 37.5% will be diagnosed and offered a treatment plan.

62.5% will be left to take care of themselves and are highly likely to return to GP for further

consultations

IN COMPARISON Sick leave costs in the UK are around £1.75 billion – accounting 176 million days off per

year averaging 6.8 days per employee
