BIBLE STUDY LEADER

Hey, guys! I’m so glad that you are here today! Are any of you good at solving riddles? I have a really great riddle today that I think might stump you. Would you like to hear it?

“I always have it with me, and it’s always in plain view. I don’t see it as easily as you.” (Allow kids to guess the answer to the riddle.)

The answer to the riddle is … my face! It is always with me, and everyone can see it … except for me! I can’t look at my own face without the help of one of these. (Show mirror.) When I look in this mirror, I can see a reflection of my face. Now, you guys are smart, so you know that isn’t REALLY me inside of the mirror. The mirror is simply showing me a reflection, or an image, of what I look like.

Have you ever wondered what God looks like? Today we will learn that to discover more about God, all we have to do is look at some of His creation. Actually, would you believe me

if I told you that YOU are like a mirror, reflecting God’s image? It’s true! We will talk all about that today as we discover God made people in His own image. (Show Life Point slide.) Say that with me: God made people in His own image.

We know that God made people in His own image because the Bible tells us so! Let’s look at today’s Bible verse together.

(Show Bible Verse slide—select preferred version.)

• So God created man in His own image; He created himin the image of God; He created them male and female.Genesis 1:27 (HCSB)

• So God created man in his own image, in the image of Godcreated he him; male and female created he them.Genesis 1:27 (KJV)

• So God created man in his own image, in the image of Godhe created him; male and female he created them.Genesis 1:27 (NIV)

• So God created man in his own image, in the image of Godhe created him; male and female he created them.Genesis 1:27 (ESV)

• So God created man in His own image; in the image ofGod He created him; male and female He created them.Genesis 1:27 (NKJV)

We learned last time that when God created the world, He simply spoke the words, and NOTHING became SOMETHING! But, today we will discover that God did things a bit differently when He created people. He took some extra care when He created you! God cares so much for us. Let’s bow our heads together and pray to Him.

God, we praise You for being the Creator of all things. We thank You that Your Word teaches us that we are made in Your image. Thank You for the special way you made each of us. As we worship together today, help us to understand what it means to be like You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

You know, I wonder what our True2Life team (the Gumshoe kids) has to say about being created in God’s image! Let’s check in with them and find out!

(Bible study leader leaves.)

TRUE2LIFE DRAMA

8 Estimated time: 5-7 minutes 8 Tech: Gumshoe video (optional) 8 People: Ben and Sarah (teen-aged friends) 8 Props: handheld mirror

Ben enters speaking into a handheld mirror. He is turned slightly so his face can be seen.

Ben: Ben, Ben you’re the man, tell me who’s fastest in the land? Right. Me! Ben, Ben you’re the man, tell me who’s most popular in the land? Right again. Me! Ben, Ben you’re the man, tell me who’s smartest in the land? You are so right. Me!

Sarah enters and stares at Ben.

Ben: Ben, Ben you’re the man, tell me who’s funniest in the land? Right. Me!

Sarah: Are you sure that mirror’s not broken?

Ben: Hey, I’m just having fun.

Sarah: You know it’s just a mirror, right?

Ben: I know. Mirrors can’t listen or talk. They just reflect.

Sarah: Ben. Good word, reflect.

Ben: (putting his finger to his head as he recalls information) Reflect … to show something, to make something known.

Sarah: You’ve been studying.

Ben: I have. I want to do my best this year in school.

Sarah: That’s great, Ben.

Ben: That’s why I’ve been looking at myself in the mirror and saying those things. I do want to be the fastest, most popular, smartest, and funniest.

Sarah: Why?

Ben: Because if I’m fast, I’ll get picked for the games and teams at school. If I’m popular, the kids in my class will

like me. If I’m smart, my teachers will like me. If I’m funny … well, who doesn’t like a good joke? Wanna hear one?

Sarah: Maybe later. But now I think I need to tell you something.

Ben: Tell me what?

Sarah: Ben, it doesn’t matter how fast, popular, smart, or funny you are. You’re fine just the way you are.

Ben: Do you really believe that?

Sarah: I do. But not only do I believe it, God believes it, too.

Ben: (realizing the truth) He does, doesn’t He?

Sarah: Yes, He does. Once I heard someone say, “God made you, and God don’t make no junk.”

Ben: That’s not really good grammar—but it is true.

Sarah: And you don’t need a mirror to remind you that God made you special.

(They exit.)

CONNECTION POINT GAME

8 Estimated time: 10 minutes 8 Tech: Connection Point Game slide 8 People: Connection Point Leader, 3 pairs of kids 8 Props: 3 handheld mirrors, 3 heavy paper plates,

3-ounce paper cups, 3 chairs, timer or stopwatch

GAME INSTRUCTIONS: • Arrange three chairs facing the side of the stage (orsideways to the audience).

• Invite six kids to join you onstage and group them intopairs.

• Direct one child from each pair to sit in a chair andbalance a plate on her head. Give her partner thehandheld mirror and explain that he should hold themirror so that his partner can see herself.

• Place several cups in the laps of the seated partners.Explain that they will have one minute to place andbalance as many cups as they can on their plates. Theymay use only the mirror and their partner’s verbalinstructions for help.

• For younger children, consider making the game easierby requiring them to place and balance five cups. Thefirst team to balance five cups is the winner.

• Start the timer. Declare the pair with the most cups ontheir plate as the winner.

CONNECTION POINT LEADER

(Show Connection Point Game slide.)

Hi, everyone! Are you ready to have some fun? For today’s game, I need six kids with great balancing skills. Who’s up for a challenge?

(Choose six kids and group them in pairs. Introduce the teams.)

I really had fun trying to figure out our riddle earlier! Mirrors allow us to see an image of ourselves, but do you know what else mirrors can do? They can help us play super awesome games! Teams, are you ready to play “Mirror Minute Mania”? Here’s how it works!

I need one partner to sit and one partner to stand. (Help pairs choose. Instruct kids not sitting to stand in front of their partners.) Great! Now, (to the kids who are seated) I need you to balance a plate on your head. Make sure it is good and steady! (Distribute plates and allow kids to get plates balanced.) Super! Now, (to the kids who are standing) hold up your mirrors so your partners can see how stylish they look wearing plates. (Distribute mirrors.)

OK, I have a job for you good-looking kids wearing the plates! I am putting some paper cups in your lap. (Distribute cups.) When I say go, your job is to place the cups on your plate and balance them so that they don’t fall off! Your partner cannot touch the plate or the cups, but they can help you. Your partner will hold the mirror so that you can see yourself, and they will help talk you through the game.

Is everyone ready? You have one-minute to stack your cups! The team with the most cups on its plate will be the winner! Are you ready? Get ready … get set … GO! (Start the timer and some fun music. Encourage kids in the audience to cheer for the teams. Declare a winner and congratulate all kids on their efforts before dismissing them to their seats.)

See? I told you there were some super fun games to play with mirrors! Can you imagine trying to play that game without a mirror to help you see? Seeing an image of themselves helped the players know how high they needed to put their hands and whether the tower was leaning one way or the other. But, the players weren’t just relying on the mirror’s image! They also listened to the voices of their partners giving directions on what to do. In just a few minutes we will learn that being made in God’s image helps us in those same ways. It helps us see things the way God does, and when we follow His directions in the Bible, it helps us make right choices.

Let’s spend some more time worshiping God together, and then we will explore more about what it means to be made in God’s image and why that is important.

Psalm 139 tells us some amazing things about God and His relationship with us. It says that He knows everything about us: when we sit, when we stand, what we think about, and what we say. It also says that He put each of us together and had a plan for our whole lives before we were even born! Isn’t that incredible? Stand with me, and let’s praise God because He has made each of us in a wonderful and remarkable way!

(Show the music video.)

(Play the Bible Story video or tell the following Bible story.)

BIBLE STUDY LEADER

(Show Bible Story slide.)

I’m curious to know if anyone used a mirror to get ready to come to church today. (Allow kids to respond.) Yes, we use mirrors almost every day! If I look into my mirror, what are some things that I might see? (Hold up mirror and allow for

responses such as face, hair, eyes, and so forth.)

Do any of you remember hearing a fairytale about a queen who would gaze into her mirror every day and ask “Who is the fairest of them all?” The queen wanted to know that she was the most beautiful in all the land. There are just a couple of problems to this story: a fairytale is not real, and a mirror will only show you an image of the OUTSIDE. You can’t use a mirror and see all the wonderful ways God created you on the inside, can you? A mirror won’t show you a person’s kindness or honesty or courage. Those are the things that really make us who we are. They shape our character and our personality. Today we will discover that when God created us, He made us in a very special way—in His image!

Now, before we get too far, we need to back up and remember what we learned last week. You’ll remember that we talked all about God’s creation and the world He created for us. Do you recall what God created on day one? (Walk through each day of creation, allowing kids to respond and helping them if they cannot recall the information.)

Great job, everyone! Today we will focus on day six of creation when God made people. We already know from today’s Bible verse that God made people in His image, so let’s find out what that means! Let’s begin reading in Genesis to find out!

(Open Bible and read Genesis 2:7.) Then the LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.

Does anyone remember from last week how God created light and dark? (He spoke.) How did God create the fish and birds? (He spoke.) And how did God create the land and the animals? (He spoke.) When God created all of nature, He simply spoke the words, and NOTHING became SOMETHING! But, that’s not how God chose to create people. (Hold up DUST poster.) I have a poster here that tells me what God used to make man, but it doesn’t make much sense! I need a friend to come help me out. (Invite a child to join you on stage and hold the mirror in front of the DUST poster so that it can be read.) That looks better! What word do you see in our mirror? DUST! (Dismiss child to his seat.)

WORSHIP

When God made man, God didn’t just speak and man appeared. When God made man, God did it in a special way by using the DUST from the earth. God formed the man from dust and then did something else very special to bring the man to life. Can I have another helper? (Hold up the BREATHED poster and invite another child to join you.) Would you please hold this mirror to our poster to discover the special way God brought man to life? (Guide the child to read the word: BREATHED.) What word do you see? The Bible says that God BREATHED into the man’s nose, and the man became a living person! (Dismiss child to his seat.)

After God created man, He put him in the garden of Eden and gave him the job of taking care of it and naming the animals. But, God knew that the man didn’t need to be alone, so God created a woman.

(Read Genesis 2:21-22.) So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place. Then the LORD God made the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.

God didn’t use dust to create woman. I need one more friend to help me out. (Hold up the RIB poster. Invite a child to join you on stage and use the mirror to read the RIB poster.) What word did you discover? God created woman by using a RIB that He took out of the man. God put the woman in the garden to be the man’s helper. (Dismiss child to his seat.)

God made us different from the rest of creation. He took special care to form us in His image. When God made us in His image, that obviously doesn’t mean He made us all look the same on the outside. Some of us have dark skin; some have red hair; and others have brown eyes. But, He did make us all in His image on the inside! He made us to love, to worship, to forgive, and to be kind. All of those are ways we know God acts, too. God made us to be like Him! That makes each of us very special!

(Show Christ Focus slide.) Why do you think God made people differently from everything else? God wanted us to be able to love and worship Him. He wanted to have a relationship with us. The problem is that we don’t perfectly reflect God’s image. Sometimes we make bad choices and disobey God. Those bad choices are called sin. That’s the whole reason that God sent Jesus! God wanted to provide a way for our sins

to be forgiven so that we could have a relationship with Him … just like He created us to do! Let’s pray together.

God, thank You for making us in Your image. Thank You for making us differently than the birds, the fish, and the animals so that we can have a relationship with You. God, help us to be more like You so that we reflect Your image more and more. We love You, God! In Jesus’ name, amen.

Optional Giving Segment: We know from our Bible that God is a giver! In fact, He gave His only Son for us. One way you can reflect God’s image is to be a giver, too. You can do that today by sharing an offering. If you would like to give an offering today, …

(Give your own directions for how the kids can give their offerings. You might consider collecting the offering in a container wrapped in reflective tape or paper as a reminder of today’s point.)

(After collecting the offering, guide kids to stand for remainder of worship song.)

CREATION

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, today your child heard that God has a plan for the people He created. God created people in His image, and people are His most special creation. How does your family respond to being created in God’s image?

LIVE IT OUT: Discuss with your child what the phrase “in God’s image” means. What about the creation of people was different from all other things God created? List some characteristics your child has that are special only to her.

GOD’S PLAN FOR PEOPLEGod created a man out of the dust of the ground. God breathed life into the man, and he became a living being. God made the man in His Own image. God planted a garden in Eden, and He made every tree to grow in the garden. Some trees were beautiful and some trees supplied food. A river went out from Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became the start of four other rivers.

God took the man He created and placed him in the garden. God planned for the man to work in the garden and to watch over it. God told him that he could eat from any tree in the garden except for one.God saw that it was not good for the man to be alone. He decided to make the man a helper. God brought all of the animals of the ground and the birds of the sky to the man. The man named all of the animals and birds. But none of them could be the man’s helper.

God caused the man to fall asleep. God took one of the man’s ribs and closed the man’s skin. Then God made the rib from the man into a woman. God took the woman to the man. The man said, “This is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. I will call her woman because she was taken from man.”—based on Genesis 2:4-24
