New innovative national music schoolMuswellbrook Shire Council today announced the establishment of a new independent primary school in partnership with the highly respected music educator Richard Gill, AO. The Muswellbrook Richard Gill National Music Academy will be an independent K-6 Primary school driven by Richard Gill’s strong guiding philosophy, with music and physical education as cornerstones of the curriculum. An Independent board has been formed to oversee the establishment of the school and Council today welcomed the school’s Chair Mr Kim Williams, AM to the region.

It is proposed that the new school will occupy the current site of the Muswellbrook Shire Council Administration Centre. Council has commenced discussions to progress the proposed relocation of its Administration Centre and the conversion of the site to the home of the specialised music education school.

Muswellbrook Mayor Martin Rush said this was an exciting opportunity building on Council’s strategy to promote Muswellbrook as a centre for education.

“Richard Gill is an inspirational educator and his philosophy will be embedded in the curriculum providing access to an extraordinary education experience.

A School board has been formed to move the initiative forward with Kim Williams providing a breadth of governance, experience and leadership in the new school.

“I am honoured to be sharing the vision that Richard Gill passionately advocates with the Upper Hunter and I look forward to working closely with Council and the community as we establish what will be a unique creative school for regional NSW and indeed as an example to all Australians ,” Mr Williams said.

Work is currently underway to register the school and subject to a successful registration and business planning process, it is anticipated the school will commence operations in 2020 with a small cohort of students from years K-3. This is the beginning of this process and further information will be provided to interested members of the community as the registration and curriculum development process continues. It is anticipated that the school will grow into a high school in future years.

Lone survivor of poachingAussie Ark and The Australian Reptile Park welcomed an endangered Manning River turtle into their care recently after being saved from poaching. The turtle has been acquired as the fi rst specimen of the conservation breeding program and a crowdfunding campaign established to give the species a future. Sadly, two individuals were illegally poached from their natural environment, with only one surviving. After being confi scated by OEH (Offi ce of Environmental Heritage) the surviving turtle was placed into care with partnered organisations Aussie Ark and The Australian Reptile Park. The adorable addition has been named “Manny” by staff and is the founding individual for a captive breeding program being established to save her species from extinction.

Merriwa Show A Drought Hub for Farmers Story by Tash Holden - Merriwa

With other ag shows deciding to give it a miss this year, Merriwa has decided to soldier on.

leisure & lifestyle

“It’s good to have something positive to focus on,” Merriwa Show president Rob Tindall said.

“We’ve been going since 1908 and we aren’t going to let this dry spell get us down.

“Lots of rural towns are struggling but there are still things we can do together in times like this, like celebrate our rural industries and the work that goes into putting meat on the table and clothes on our backs.

“We are providing a drought support hub that will have agricultural specialists, rural fi nancial advisors and counsellors on hand from 10 am till 2 pm to help farmers sift through the myriad of information out there.

“We also have a very exciting ag innovation section that will showcase the very latest in farm gadgets and technology designed to make farming a little bit easier.

“We can’t do without our farmers, but we can

all do a little bit to help them through this tough patch.

“Spending money in our regional towns is one way to help keep not only our farmers motivated to keep going, but our butchers, grocers and other traders who are all really feeling the pinch,” he said.

There will certainly be plenty of ways to spend a little cash. Enjoy a Devonshire tea from the CWA, watch the heavy horses and cattle in the grand parade, savour a steak sandwich from the Steak Hut or saunter down sideshow alley with the kids.

Whether it’s the chooks, the utes, the bulls, horses or the log splitters, you’ll be sure to fi nd plenty to marvel at the Merriwa Springtime Show on September 15.

Over 600 cubic metres of concrete (or around 120 concrete trucks) will be poured over the next 12 weeks providing a large ramp entry to the space, a ring path around the performance area and detailed terrace work to create 1000 linear metres of concrete seating.

This is in addition to the 26 concrete building footings, each 900 millimetres in diameter and 3500 millimetres deep, already in place and holding up the 90m by 60m arena roof.

Chair of the White Park Committee Cr Lee Watts said “The White Park committee has put a lot of effort into making sure each equine discipline have had a say in the design on the outdoor enclosed venue.

“It’s such an exciting time to watch the development being built and know the facility will attract not only local people but also visitors to enjoy the many equine,

recreational and any activities that the venue can be used for.

Once complete, the venue will seat an audience of thousands for equine events, other sports, potentially music concerts, education and recreation programs.

Planning, including funding proposals, is underway for Stage 2 of the White Park project which includes completing the arena seating, toilets, upgraded power supply, water and sewerage for the whole park, new stables and horse boxes, roadways, camping amenities, bar, canteen, landscaping and a causeway or bridge over Fig Tree Gully.

The White Park Arena will provide the Upper Hunter’s fi rst all-weather outdoor sports facility and increase its use for a range of events and activities.

Drought may be impacting the region, but the polo ponies are in top notch condition, with four A Grade teams heading to Dungog to vie for the highly prized Mackay Cup.

Club President Beau Blundell is inviting families across the Hunter to come out and support the event.

‘There’s plenty of urban polo tournaments popping up around Australia at the moment that are proving to be incredibly popular, but bush polo is where it all began,’ said Beau.

‘We’re a no fuss club, sponsored by some fantastic organisations and held together by the support of the local community.

‘If you want to see some serious action while enjoying a relaxing day in the beautiful Dungog Shire, then come join us - everyone is welcome at Wirragulla!’

Proudly raising much needed funds for the

Hunter Region Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, the two day tournament is great entertainment for the whole family.

Picnic polo at it’s fi nest, there is plenty of action both on and off the fi eld. There’s beautiful local food and wine, jumping castle and games for the children, plus market stalls from local businesses - if you have been thinking about a drive into the country to support local communities, this is the weekend to do it! Plus on Sunday 16 September, don’t miss the race that stops the chukkas, when a BMW X5 races a polo pony the length of the fi eld to fi nd out whether a car is faster than a polo pony, thanks to sponsors Klosters!

Want to know how to fi nd us? Drive towards Dungog - you

won’t miss the signage just before town, and there will be plenty of welcoming faces once you reach the club’s home at the Tabbil Creek Polo Ground! In the meantime check out Wirragulla Polo On Facebook to learn more about the tournament, local players and the club’s history!
