Afghanistan Statistical Yearbook 2009-10 163
Services Land Transportation
Afghanistan transportation system uses land and air transportation. It has to be mentioned that in land transportation, specially imports of vehicles, indicates considerable growth.
Therefore registered vehicles was 949636 in
2008-09 which increased to 1036025 vehicles in 2009-10, that shows an increase of 9% . Private cars and taxies increased the most. Lorries also increased from 156469 in 2008-09 to 169737 in 2009-10. Buses increased from 65471 to71581.
Air Transport
For air transport, the country has two international airports in Kabul and Kandahar and many small airfields, three of which are asphalted. Air traffic (the number of flights) has been increasing substantially since the end of war in late 2001, For instance Ariana
Afghan Airline has 9 Boeing aircrafts which in
2009 10 carried total number of 293000 passengers.-
And 3277 tons of goods.
In addition to Ariana 3 other air companies are
operating and have12 aircrafts and carried total of 421000 passengers in 2009-10. From Private Airlines only Safi airline carried 263 ton goods.
Communication
Communication has been strongly developing
since the end of the war. In th last Eight years
most of investment was made in communication sector. In 2008-09 total of 9500000
SIMcards was sold. While in 2009-10 total
SIMcards sold by private communication companies Increased to 12636817 SIMcards. The number of fixed line telephone subscribers has increased substantially from 103667 in 2008-09 to 140205 in 2009-10, which shows an increase of 35%.
