  • MAINTENANCE SAFETY

    Never service the Bobcat Skid-Steer Loader without instructions.

    Have good ventilation whenwelding or grinding paintedparts.Wear dust mask when grindingpainted parts. Toxic dust and gascan be produced.Avoid exhaust fume leaks whichcan kill without warning. Exhaustsystem must be tightly sealed.

    Stop, cool and clean engine offlammable materials beforechecking fluids.Never service or adjust loaderwith the engine running unlessinstructed to do so in themanual.Avoid contact with leakinghydraulic fluid or diesel fuelunder pressure. It can penetratethe skin or eyes.Never fill fuel tank with enginerunning, while smoking or whennear open flame.

    Disconnecting or loosening anyhydraulic tubeline, hose, fitting,component or a part failure cancause lift arms to drop. Do not gounder lift arms when raisedunless supported by anapproved lift arm support device.Replace it if damaged.

    Keep body, jewelry and clothingaway from moving parts,electrical contact, hot parts andexhaust.Wear eye protection to guardfrom battery acid, compressedsprings, fluids under pressureand flying debris when enginesare running or tools are used.Use eye protection approved fortype of welding.Keep rear door closed except forservice. Close and latch doorbefore operating the loader.

    Never work on loader with liftarms up unless lift arms are heldby an approved lift arm supportdevice. Replace if damaged.Never modify equipment or addattachments not approved byBobcat Company.

    Lead-acid batteries produceflammable and explosive gases.Keep arcs, sparks, flames andlighted tobacco away frombatteries.Batteries contain acid whichburns eyes or skin on contact.Wear protective clothing. If acidcontacts body, flush well withwater. For eye contact flush welland get immediate medicalattention.

    Use the correct procedure to lift orlower operator cab.

    Cleaning and maintenance arerequired daily.

  • FOREWORDThis manual is for the Bobcat loader mechanic. It provides necessary servicing and adjustmentprocedures for the Bobcat loader and its component parts and systems. Refer to the Operation &Maintenance Manual for operating instructions, starting procedure, daily checks, etc.A general inspection of the following items must be made after the loader has had service or repair:

    1. Check that the ROPS/FOPS(Including side screens) is ingood condition and is notmodified.

    9. The parking brake mustfunction correctly.

    2. Check that ROPS mountinghardware is tightened and isBobcat approved.

    10. Enclosure door latches mustopen and close freely.

    3. The seat belt must becorrectly installed, functionaland in good condition.

    11. Bob-Tach wedges andlinkages must functioncorrectly and be in goodcondition.

    4. The seat bar must becorrectly adjusted, clean andlubricated.

    12. Safety treads must be in goodcondition.

    5. Check lift arm support device,replace if damaged.

    13. Check for correct function ofindicator lamps.

    6. Machine signs (decals) mustbe legible and in the correctlocation.

    14. Check hydraulic fluid level,engine oil level and fuelsupply.

    7. Steering levers, hand controlsand foot pedals must return toneutral (as applicable).

    15. Inspect for fuel, oil orhydraulic fluid leaks.

    8. Check for correct function ofthe work lights.

    17. Check the condition of thebattery and cables.

    23. Operate the machine andcheck all functions.

    18. Inspect the air cleaner fordamage or leaks. Check thecondition of the element.

    24. Check for correct function ofthe Bobcat Interlock ControlSystem (BICS) before themachine is returned to thecustomer.

    19. Check the electrical chargingsystem.

    25. Check for proper function offront horn and back-up alarm(if equipped).

    20. Check tires for wear andpressure. Check tracks forwear and tension. Use onlyapproved tires or tracks.

    26. Check function or condition of all equipped options and accessories (examples: fire extinguisher, rotating beacon, lift kits, etc.).

    21. Inspect for loose or brokenparts or connections.

    27. Recommend to the ownerthat all necessary correctionsbe made before the machineis returned to service.

    22. Check for any fieldmodification not completed.

    The Delivery Report is used to assure that completeinstructions have been given to the new owner andthat the machine is in safe operating condition.

    The Operation & Maintenance Manual delivered withthe machine or attachment contains operatinginformation as well as routine maintenance andservice procedures. It is a part of the machine and canbe stored in a container provided on the machine.Replacement Operation & Maintenance Manuals canbe ordered from your Bobcat dealer.

    Machine signs (decals) instruct on the safe operationand care of your Bobcat machine or attachment. Thesigns and their locations are shown in the Operation& Maintenance Manual. Replacement signs areavailable from your Bobcat dealer.

    An Operators Handbook fastened to the operatorcab. Its brief instructions are convenient to theoperator. The handbook is available from your dealerin an English edition or one of many other languages.See your Bobcat dealer for more information ontranslated versions.

    The AEM Safety Manual delivered with the machinegives general safety information.

    The Service Manual and Parts Manual are availablefrom your dealer for use by mechanics to do shop-type service and repair work.

    The Skid-Steer Loader Operator Training Course isavailable through your local dealer or atwww.training.bobcat.com or www.bobcat.com.This course is intended to provide rules and practicesof correct operation of the Skid-Steer Loader. Thecourse is available in English and Spanish versions.

    The dealer and owner / operator review therecommended uses of the product when delivered. If theowner / operator will be using the machine for a differentapplication(s) he or she must ask the dealer forrecommendations on the new use.

    Cutting or drilling concrete containing sand or rockcontaining quartz may result in exposure to silica dust.Do not exceed Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL) tosilica dust as determined by OSHA or other job site Rulesand Regulations.     Maintenance

    The machine and some attachments have componentsthat are at high temperatures under normal operatingconditions. The primary source of high temperatures isthe engine and exhaust system. The electrical system, ifdamaged or incorrectly maintained, can be a source ofarcs or sparks.

    Flammable debris (leaves, straw, etc.) must be removedregularly. If flammable debris is allowed to accumulate, itcan cause a fire hazard. Clean often to avoid thisaccumulation. Flammable debris in the enginecompartment is a potential fire hazard.

    The operators area, engine compartment and enginecooling system must be inspected every day and cleanedif necessary to prevent fire hazards and overheating.

    All fuels, most lubricants and some coolants mixtures areflammable. Flammable fluids that are leaking or spilledonto hot surfaces or onto electrical components cancause a fire.

    Operation

    Do not use the machine where exhaust, arcs, sparks orhot components can contact flammable material,explosive dust or gases.

    Electrical

    Check all electrical wiring and connections for damage.Keep the battery terminals clean and tight. Repair orreplace any damaged part or wires that are loose orfrayed.

    Battery gas can explode and cause serious injury. Usethe procedure in the Operation & Maintenance Manualfor connecting the battery and for jump starting. Do notjump start or charge a frozen or damaged battery. Keepany open flames or sparks away from batteries. Do notsmoke in battery charging area.

    Check hydraulic tubes, hoses and fittings for damageand leakage. Never use open flame or bare skin to checkfor leaks. Hydraulic tubes and hoses must be properlyrouted and have adequate support and secure clamps.Tighten or replace any parts that show leakage.

    Always clean fluid spills. Do not use gasoline or dieselfuel for cleaning parts. Use commercial nonflammablesolvents.

    Fueling

    Stop the engine and let it cool before adding fuel. Nosmoking! Do not refuel a machine near open flames orsparks. Fill the fuel tank outdoors.

    Starting

    Do not use ether or starting fluids on any engine that hasglow plugs or air intake heater. These starting aids cancause explosion and injure you or bystanders.

    Use the procedure in the Operation & MaintenanceManual for connecting the battery and for jump starting.

    Spark Arrestor Exhaust System

    The spark arrestor exhaust system is designed to controlthe emission of hot particles from the engine and exhaustsystem, but the muffler and the exhaust gases are stillhot.

    Check the spark arrestor exhaust system regularly tomake sure it is maintained and working properly. Use theprocedure in the Operation & Maintenance Manual forcleaning the spark arrestor muffler (if equipped).

    Welding And Grinding

    Always clean the machine and attachment, disconnectthe battery, and disconnect the wiring from the Bobcatcontrollers before welding. Cover rubber hoses, batteryand all other flammable parts. Keep a fire extinguishernear the machine when welding.

    Have good ventilation when grinding or welding paintedparts. Wear dust mask when grinding painted parts.Toxic dust or gas can be produced.

    Dust generated from repairing nonmetallic parts such ashoods, fenders or covers can be flammable or explosive.Repair such components in a well ventilated area awayfrom open flames or sparks.

    Fire Extinguishers

    Know where fire extinguishers and first aid kits arelocated and how to use them. Inspect the fireextinguisher and service the fire extinguisher regularly.Obey the recommendations on the instructions plate.

    Always use the serial number of the loader whenrequesting service information or when ordering parts.Early or later models (identification made by serialnumber) may use different parts, or it may be necessaryto use a different procedure in doing a specific serviceoperation.

    The loader serial number plate is located on the outsideof the loader frame [Figure 1].

    Explanation of loader Serial Number:

    1. The four digit Model/Engine Combination Modulenumber identifies the model number and enginecombination.

    2. The five digit Production Sequence Number identifiesthe order which the loader is produced.

    The engine serial number is located on the engine block[Figure 2].

    The Delivery Report must be filled out by the dealer andsigned by the owner or operator when the Bobcat loaderis delivered. An explanation of the form must be given tothe owner. Make sure it is filled out completely [Figure3].

    Installing

    WARNINGNever work on a machine with the lift arms up unlessthe lift arms are secured by an approved lift armsupport device. Failure to use an approved lift armsupport device can allow the lift arms or attachmentto fall and cause injury or death.Service lift arm support device if damaged or if partsare missing. Using a damaged lift arm support orwith missing parts can cause lift arms to dropcausing injury or death.

    Remove attachment from the loader.

    Put jackstands under the rear corners of the loader frame(Inset) [Figure 10-20-1].Disconnect the spring from the lift arm support deviceretaining pin (Item 1) [Figure 10-20-1]. Support the liftarm support device (Item 2) [Figure 10-20-1] with yourhand and remove the retaining pin (Item 3) [Figure 10-20-1].

    Lower the lift arm support device to the top of the liftcylinder. Hook the free end of the spring (Item 1) [Figure10-20-2] to the lift arm support device so there will be nointerference with the support device engagement.

    Sit in the operators seat, fasten the seat belt and lowerthe seat bar. Start the engine.Figure 10-20-3

    Raise the lift arms until the lift arm support device dropsonto the lift cylinder rod (Item 1) [Figure 10-20-3]

    Lower the lift arms slowly until the support device is heldbetween the lift arm and the lift cylinder. Stop the engine.Raise the seat bar and move both pedals until bothpedals lock.

    Install pin (Item 2) [Figure 10-20-3] into the rear of the liftarm support device below the cylinder rod.

    Removing

    Remove the pin from the lift arm support device.

    Connect the spring (Item 1) [Figure 10-20-4] from the liftarm support device to the bracket below the lift arms.

    Sit in the operators seat fasten the seat belt and lowerthe seat bar. Start the engine.

    Raise the lift arms a small amount. The spring will lift thesupport device off the lift cylinder rod [Figure 10-20-5].Lower the lift arms. Stop the engine.

    Raise the seat bar, disconnect the seat belt, move pedalsuntil both pedals lock and exit the cab.

    Disconnect the spring from the bracket.

    Raise the support device into storage position and insertpin through lift arm support device and bracket. (SeeLIFT ARM SUPPORT DEVICE on Page PM-1) Hook thespring to the lift arm support device retaining pin.

    Remove the jackstands.

    The Bobcat Loader has an operator cab (ROPS andFOPS) as standard equipment to protect the operatorfrom rollover and falling objects. Check with your dealer ifthe operator cab has been damaged. The seat belt mustbe worn for rollover protection.

    ROPS / FOPS - Roll Over protective Structure per ISO3471, and Falling Object Protective Structure per SAEJ1043 and ISO 3449, Level I. Level II is available.

    Level IProtection from falling bricks, small concrete blocks,and hand tools encountered in operations such ashighway maintenance, landscaping, and otherconstruction sites.

    Level IIProtection from falling trees, rocks: for machinesinvolved in site clearing, overhead demolition orforestry.

    WARNINGNever modify operator cab by welding, grinding,drilling holes or adding attachments unlessinstructed to do so by Bobcat Company. Changes tothe cab can cause loss of operator protection fromrollover and falling objects, and result in injury ordeath.

    Raising

    Always stop the engine before raising or lowering thecab.

    Stop the loader on a level surface. Lower the lift arms. Ifthe lift arms must be up while raising the operator cab,install the lift arm support device. (See LIFT ARMSUPPORT DEVICE on Page 10-20-1.)

    Lowering

    Always stop the engine before raising or lowering thecab.

    NOTE: Always use the grab handles to lower the cab.

    Pull down on the bottom of the operator cab until it stopsat the latching mechanism [Figure 10-30-4].

    NOTE: The weight of the cab increases whenequipped with options and accessories suchas cab door, heater, air conditioning, etc. Inthese cases, the cab may need to be raisedslightly from the latch to be able to release thelatch.

    Loading And Unloading

    Adequately designed ramps of sufficient strength areneeded to support the weight of the machine whenloading onto a transport vehicle. Wood ramps canbreak and cause personal injury.

    Be sure the transport and towing vehicles are ofadequate size and capacity. (See Capacities on PageSPEC-10-4.)

    A loader with an empty bucket or no attachment must beloaded backward onto the transport vehicle [Figure 10-40-1].

    The rear of the trailer must be blocked or supported (Item1) [Figure 10-40-1] when loading or unloading the loaderto prevent the front end of the trailer from raising up.

    Use the following procedure to fasten the Bobcat loaderto the transport vehicle to prevent the loader from movingduring sudden stops or when going up or down slopes[Figure 10-40-2].

    Lower the bucket or attachment to the floor.

    Procedure

    Because of the design of the loader, there is not arecommended towing procedure.

    The loader can be lifted onto a transport vehicle.

    The loader can be skidded a short distance to movefor service (EXAMPLE: Move onto a transportvehicle.) without damage to the hydrostatic system.(The tires/tracks will not turn.) There might be slightwear to the tires/tracks when the loader is skidded.

    The towing chain (or cable) must be rated at 1 & 1/2times the weight of the loader (See Performance onPage SPEC-10-2.)

    The remote start tool (Item 1) [Figure 10-60-1] isrequired when the service technician is checking thehydraulic/hydrostatic system or adjusting the steeringlinkage.

    The traction lock switch (Item 1) [Figure 10-60-2] is usedto turn traction lock ON or OFF. Push the switch to theoverride position. The switch will illuminate to indicatetraction lock OVERRIDE, in this position the wheels areable to turn.

    The maximum flow/variable flow switch (Item 2) [Figure10-60-2] is used to activate the auxiliary hydraulics.Pressing the switch once will activate maximum flow.Pressing the switch again will activate variable flow. Theswitch will illuminate to indicate which flow rate is active.Pressing the switch a third time will turn the flow OFF.The switch is used when checking pressures and flowrate.

    The auxiliary pressure release (Item 3) [Figure 10-60-2]is used to release hydraulic pressure to the front and/orrear auxiliary couplers. To release pressure; push andhold the switch for a few seconds.

    NOTE: With the engine running; pushing and holdingthe pressure release switch will cause theengine to stop. To relieve the pressure; pressthe switch until the engine stops.

Placing the key switch of the remotestart tool in the run position disconnects theoperator panel key switch from the start circuit. If theservice technician will be working the engine area itis important to remove the operator panel keys.

    Replace the inner filter every third time the outer filter isreplaced or as indicated.

    Checking Level

    Remove the rear grill.

    Remove the coolant fill cap (Item 1) [Figure 10-90-5].Check coolant level. The level markers are on the tank.Coolant must be at the bottom marker when the engine iscold; top marker when hot.

    Install the rear grill and close the rear door.

    IMPORTANTAVOID ENGINE DAMAGE

    Always use the correct ratio of water to antifreeze.

    Too much antifreeze reduces cooling systemefficiency and may cause serious premature enginedamage.

    Too little antifreeze reduces the additives whichprotect the internal engine components; reduces theboiling point and freeze protection of the system.

    Always add a premixed solution. Adding full strengthconcentrated coolant can cause serious prematureengine damage.

    glycol coolant (purple color). DO NOT mixpropylene glycol with ethylene glycol.

    Add premixed coolant, 47% water and 53% propyleneglycol to the recovery tank. (See Checking Level on PagePM-2.)One gallon and one pint (4,3 L) of propylene glycol mixedwith one gallon (3,8 L) of water is the correct mixture ofcoolant to provide a -34F (-37C) freeze protection.Fill the tank until it is at the lower marker on the tank.

    Use a refractometer to check the condition of propyleneglycol in your cooling system and replace the coolant fillcap.

    NOTE: When installing the coolant fill cap, the capmust be tightened until it clicks.

    Run the engine until it is at operating temperature. Stopthe engine. Check the coolant level when cool. Addcoolant as needed.

    Fuel Specifications

    Use only clean, high quality diesel fuel, Grade No. 2 orGrade No. 1.

    The following is one suggested blending guideline whichshould prevent fuel gelling during cold temperatures:

    The following fuels may be used in this machine:

    Low Sulfur (500 ppm sulfur) Diesel Fuel.

    Ultra Low Sulfur (15 ppm sulfur) Diesel Fuel.

    Biodiesel Blend Fuel - Must contain no more than fivepercent biodiesel mixed with low sulfur or ultra lowsulfur petroleum based diesel. This is commonlymarketed as B5 blended diesel fuel. B5 blendeddiesel fuel must meet ASTM D975 (US Standard) orEN590 (EU Standard) specifications.

    Always clean up spilled fuel or oil. Keep heat, flames,sparks or lighted tobacco away from fuel and oil.Failure to use care around combustibles can causeexplosion or fire.

    Biodiesel Blend Fuel

    Biodiesel blend fuel has unique qualities that should beconsidered before using in this machine:

    Cold weather conditions can lead to plugged fuelsystem components and hard starting.

    Biodiesel blend fuel is an excellent medium formicrobial growth and contamination which can causecorrosion and plugging of fuel system components.

    Use of biodiesel blend fuel may result in prematurefailure of fuel system components, such as pluggedfuel filters and deteriorated fuel lines.

    Shorter maintenance intervals may be required, such

    and fuel lines.

    Using biodiesel blended fuels containing more thanfive percent biodiesel can affect engine life and causedeterioration of hoses, tubelines, injectors, injectorpump and seals.

    Apply the following guidelines if biodiesel blend fuel isused:

    Ensure the fuel tank is as full as possible at all timesto prevent moisture from collecting in the fuel tank.

    Ensure that the fuel tank cap is securely tightened.

    Biodiesel blend fuel can damage painted surfaces,remove all spilled fuel from painted surfacesimmediately.

    Drain all water from the fuel filter daily beforeoperating the machine.

    Do not exceed engine oil change interval. Extendedoil change intervals can cause engine damage.

    Before vehicle storage; drain the fuel tank, refill with100% petroleum diesel fuel, add fuel stabilizer andrun the engine for at least 30 minutes.

    NOTE: Biodiesel blend fuel does not have long termstability and should not be stored for morethan three months.

    Loosen the drain (Item 1) [Figure 10-100-3] at thebottom of the filter element to remove water from thefilter.

    Remove the filter element (Item 2) [Figure 10-100-3].

    Clean the area around the filter housing. Put clean oil onthe seal of the new filter element. Install the fuel filter, andhand tighten.

    Remove air from the fuel system. (See Removing AirFrom The Fuel System on Page 10-100-3.)

    Removing Air From The Fuel System

    After replacing the filter element or when the fuel tankhas run out of fuel, the air must be removed from the fuelsystem before starting the engine.

Fluid leaks under pressure may not be visible.Use a piece of cardboard or wood to find leaks. Donot use your bare hand. Wear safety goggles.     Checking And Adding Engine Oil

    Check the engine oil level every day before starting theengine for the work shift.

    Park the machine on level ground. Open the rear doorand remove the dipstick (Item 1) [Figure 10-110-1].

    Keep the oil level between the marks on the dipstick. Donot overfill.

    Use good quality motor oil that meets API ServiceClassification of CD or better (See Oil Chart, above).

    Removing And Replacing Oil And Filter

    For the service interval for replacing the engine oil andfilter. (See SERVICE SCHEDULE on Page 10-70-1.)

    Run the engine until it is at operating temperature. Stopthe engine.

    Open the rear door and remove the drain hose from itsstorage position (Item 4) [Figure 10-110-1].

    Remove the drain plug (Item 1) [Figure 10-110-2] anddrain the oil into a container and recycle or dispose ofused oil in an environmentally safe manner.

    Remove the oil filter (Item 2) [Figure 10-110-1] and cleanthe filter housing surface.

    Put oil on the new filter gasket, install the filter and handtighten.

    Install and tighten the drain plug.

    Remove the fill cap (Item 3) [Figure 10-110-1].

    Put oil in the engine. (See Capacities on Page SPEC-10-4), for the correct quantity. Do not overfill.

    Start the engine and let it run for several minutes. Stopthe engine and check for leaks at the filter.

    Remove the dipstick (Item 1) [Figure 10-110-1] andcheck the oil level.

    Add oil as needed if it is not at the top mark on thedipstick.

    Install the dipstick and close the rear door.

    Checking And Adding Fluid

    Use only recommended fluid in the hydraulic system.(See Specifications on Page SPEC-40-1.) and [Figure10-120-3].Put the loader on a level surface, lower the lift arms andtilt the Bob-Tach fully back.

    Stop the engine.

    Install fittings on new filter, install new filter, install themounting clamp, connect and tighten the hoses.

    Remove the left lower side cover (Item 1) [Figure 10-120-10].

    Disconnect the hoses and fittings from the attachmentcase drain filter (Item 2) [Figure 10-120-10]. Removeand discard the filter.

    Install fittings on new filter, install new filter, connect andtighten the hoses and install the left lower side cover.

    Checking And Adding Oil

    The chaincase contains the final drive sprockets andchains and uses the same type of oil as the hydraulic/hydrostatic system. (See Hydraulic System on PageSPEC-10-3.)

    Stop the loader on a level surface.

    Stop the engine.

    If oil can be reached with the tip of your finger through thehole, the oil level is correct.

    If the level is low, add oil through the check plug hole untilthe oil flows from the hole.
