Page 4: Service Line Manager, Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance patients may be seen at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance outpatient clinic on Lake Union, UW Medical Center (UWMC), Evergreen Health, or UW Medicine’s Northwest Hospital & Regional Medical Center. Pediatric patients may be seen at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance outpatient clinic and Seattle Children’s. If overnight hospital stays are necessary, adult patients go to UWMC and pediatric patients go to Seattle Children’s.SCCA is home to some of the world’s best surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists. Together, this team of more than 300 cancer specialists work to ensure that your care is well planned and coordinated—from the day you walk into the clinic to the day you walk out.

Doctors at SCCA treat cancer and specialize in the treatment of specific cancer types, such as breast cancer or lung cancer. They also treat malignant and non-malignant blood disorders. This focus allows them to develop a deep understanding of diagnosing and treating disease. SCCA doctors diagnose and treat thousands of cancer cases every year. This experience builds the expertise that makes better survival rates possible.

According to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB), SCCA patients in general have better survival rates than patients treated at other cancer treatment centers. The latest NCDB Survival Reports compare the five-year survival of patients who were treated at SCCA and other cancer treatment centers across the United States for breast cancer, colon cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, myeloma, and prostate cancer.

Patients at SCCA receive the latest treatments and therapies for cancer, from chemotherapy regimens that are easier to tolerate to less-invasive surgical procedures that minimize post-operative pain and speed up the healing process. Patients also have access to many new drugs and alternative treatments that are under investigation in clinical studies and are available only at SCCA and at limited sites around the country.

At SCCA, your team of doctors will provide you with a customized course of treatment that best matches your diagnosis, as well as your personal circumstances.SCCA, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine, and Seattle Children's form the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Northwest. This group of organizations is one of the top-funded cancer centers in the country.

More than 7,000 new cancer patients are treated at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance every year. Since the SCCA outpatient clinic opened its doors in 2001, over 180,000 patients have come to SCCA for everything from cancer treatment and second opinions to visiting SCCA high-risk clinics and getting mammograms. Currently the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance has over 300 clinical trials that are actively recruiting patients. SCCA has Network Members in Oregon, Montana, Alaska, and Washington. Because of their relationship to SCCA, Network Members can provide their patients

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

Fred Hutch, home of three Nobel Prize laureates, is an independent, nonprofit research institution dedicated to the development and advancement of biomedical technology to eliminate cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. The center grew out of the Pacific Northwest Research Foundation, founded in 1956 by William B. Hutchinson. The Foundation was dedicated to the study of heart surgery, cancer, and diseases of the endocrine system. In 1964, Dr. Hutchinson's brother Fred Hutchinson died of lung cancer. The next year, Dr. William Hutchinson established the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center as a division of the Pacific Northwest Research Foundation.

In 1972, with the help of Senator Warren G. Magnuson PNRF received federal funding under the National Cancer Act of 1971 to create in Seattle one of the 15 new NCI-designated Cancer Centers aimed at conducting basic research called for under 1971 Act; the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center became independent 1972 and its building opened 3 years later.

Page 7: Service Line Manager, Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies

The center was named an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1976. In 1998, the center formed the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), a separate nonprofit corporation,[9] with UW Medicine, and Seattle Children's. This solidified the center's reach into clinical care and was essential for it retaining its NCI comprehensive center designation; the designation was extended to the center's consortium including the SCCA in 2003.SCCA's outpatient clinic first opened in January 2001.

THE LOCATION

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

Seattle is the largest city in both the State of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The metropolitan area of around 3.6 million inhabitants is the 15th largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Seattle is a coastal seaport city and the seat of King County, in the U.S. state of Washington, with an estimated 668,342 residents as of 2014. The city is situated on a narrow isthmus between Puget Sound (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Canada–United States border. A major gateway for trade with Asia, Seattle is the 8th largest port in the United States and 9th largest in North America in terms of container handling.

With a total area of 83.9 square miles, Seattle is the northernmost city with at least 500,000 people in the United States, farther north than Canadian cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, at about the same latitude as Salzburg, Austria.

The topography of Seattle is hilly. The city lies on several hills, including Capitol Hill, First Hill, West Seattle, Beacon Hill, Magnolia, Denny Hill, and Queen Anne. The Kitsap and the Olympic peninsulas along with the Olympic Mountains lie to the west of Puget Sound, while the Cascade Range and Lake Sammamish lie to the east of Lake Washington. The city has over 5,540 acres (2,242 ha) of parkland.

Page 11: Service Line Manager, Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies

Seattle's economy is driven by a mix of older industrial companies, and "new economy" Internet and technology companies, service, design and clean technology companies. The city's gross metropolitan product was $231 billion in 2010, making it the 11th largest metropolitan economy in the United States.

The Port of Seattle, which also operates Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, is a major gateway for trade with Asia and cruises to Alaska, and is the 8th largest port in the United States in terms of container capacity. Though it was affected by the Great Recession, Seattle has retained a comparatively strong economy, and remains a hotbed for start-

up businesses, especially in green building and clean technologies: it was ranked as America's No. 1 "smarter city" based on its government policies and green economy. In February 2010, the city government committed Seattle to becoming North America's first "climate neutral" city, with a goal of reaching zero net per capita greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Large companies dominate the business landscape. Four companies of the United States' largest companies, are headquartered in Seattle: Internet retailer Amazon.com, coffee chain Starbucks, department store Nordstrom, and freight forwarder Expeditors International of Washington.

Seattle has been a regional center for the performing arts for many years. The century-old Seattle Symphony Orchestra is among the worlds most recorded and performs primarily at Benaroya Hall. The Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet, which perform at McCaw Hall are comparably distinguished, with the Opera being particularly known for its performances of the works of Richard Wagner and the PNB School ranking as one of the top three ballet training institutions in the United States. The Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras (SYSO) is the largest symphonic youth organization in the United States.

The city also boasts lauded summer and winter chamber music festivals organized by the Seattle Chamber Music Society. Among Seattle's prominent annual fairs and festivals are the 24-day Seattle International Film Festival, Northwest Folklife over the Memorial Day weekend, numerous Seafair events throughout July and August and the art and music festival Bumbershoot, which programs music as well as other art and entertainment over the Labor Day weekend. All are typically attended by 100,000 people annually.

The University of Washington is consistently ranked among the country's top leading institutions in medical research, earning special merits for programs in neurology and neurosurgery. Seattle has seen local developments of modern paramedic services with the establishment of Medic One in 1970. One paramedic system called Seattle "the best place in the world to have a heart attack".

Three of Seattle's largest medical centers are located on First Hill. Harborview Medical Center, the public county hospital, is the only Level I trauma hospital in a region that includes Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. Virginia Mason Medical Center and Swedish Medical Center's two largest campuses are also located

Page 12: Service Line Manager, Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies

in this part of Seattle, including the Virginia Mason Hospital. This concentration of hospitals resulted in the neighborhood's nickname "Pill Hill".

Located in the Laurelhurst neighborhood, Seattle Children's, formerly Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, is the pediatric referral center for Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has a campus in the Eastlake neighborhood. The University District is home to the University of Washington Medical Center which, along with Harborview, is operated by the University of Washington. Seattle is also served by a Veterans Affairs hospital on Beacon Hill, a third campus of Swedish in Ballard, and Northwest Hospital and Medical Center near Northgate Mall.

Seattle's mild, temperate marine climate allows year-round outdoor recreation, including walking, cycling, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, rock climbing, motor boating, sailing, team sports, and swimming. In town, many people walk around Green Lake, through the forests and along the bluffs and beaches of Discovery Park in Magnolia, along the shores of Myrtle Edwards Park on the Downtown waterfront, along the shoreline of Lake Washington at Seward Park, along Alki Beach in West Seattle, or along the Burke-Gilman Trail. Also popular are hikes and skiing in the nearby Cascade or Olympic Mountains and kayaking and sailing in the waters of Puget Sound, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Strait of Georgia.

Bellevue is a city in the Eastside region of King County, Washington, United States, across Lake Washington from Seattle. The name "Bellevue" is French for "beautiful view". As Seattle's largest suburb, and fifth largest city. Bellevue has variously been characterized as an edge city, satellite city. The city had a population of 133,992.

It is currently the second largest city center in Washington State with over 35,000 employees and 5,000 residents. Based on per capita income, Bellevue is the 6th wealthiest of 522 communities in the state of Washington. In 2008, Bellevue was named number 1 in CNNMoney's list of the best places to live and launch a business, and in 2010 was again ranked as the 4th best place to live in America. In 2014, Bellevue was ranked as the 2nd best place to live by USA Today. Reflective of Bellevue's growth over the years is Bellevue Square, now one of the largest shopping centers in the region. An expansion along Bellevue Way called "The Lodge" and the new One Lincoln Tower is the largest Seattle Eastside shopping and dining destination.

The city lies between Lake Washington to the west and the smaller Lake Sammamish to the east. The city is bisected by Interstate 405 running north-south, and the southern portion is crossed from west to east by Interstate 90. The State Route 520 freeway roughly delineates the upper reaches of Bellevue.

Bellevue is the site of the popular annual Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair, held since 1947 at the end of July. The biennial Bellevue Sculpture Exhibition draws thousands of visitors to the Downtown Park to view up to 46 three-dimensional artworks from artists around the country. In celebration of its strawberry farming history, Bellevue holds an annual Strawberry Festival. The Bellevue 24-Hour Relay has also been hosted every July in Bellevue Downtown Park.

Page 14: Service Line Manager, Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies

With its reputation for good schools, Bellevue continues to attract families with children. The under-18 population has kept pace with overall population growth and comprised just over one fifth of Bellevue's population in 2010.

Bellevue residents are some of the most highly educated in the state, with over 60 percent having a bachelor's degree or higher in 2009. Nearly the same proportion was employed in management, professional or related occupations. The City of Bellevue's website provides additional statistics and information about the city.
