Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are about to begin a very sacred time of our Church Year – the Sacred Ninety (90) Days. There are Forty (40) days of Lent and Fifty (50) days of Easter. We begin the Lenten Journey – I prefer to say that it is our Lenten Retreat – beginning this Wednesday (Ash Wednesday). Let us keep Lent as a sacred and grace-filled time. Perhaps we can look at L E N T as an opportunity to Listen Every New Time.

FASTING AND FEASTING DURING LENT Make more room for God this Lent by choosing not to do some things (fasting) and by choos-ing to do other things (feasting).

FASTING Fasting is an integral part of Lent. Traditionally it has included reducing the amount of food we eat and abstaining from meat. We fast to allow our physical hunger to remind us of our spiri-tual hunger, our need for God. The purpose of fasting is to turn our attention to both God and others. Things to fast from:

• watching television • swearing or using foul language • buying new things: clothes, music, magazines, jewelry • snack or junk foods • spending money on entertainment • being angry at other people • holding resentments • gossiping • being dishonest

FEASTING The dictionary defines a feast as “something that gives unusual or abundant pleasure.” Jesus tells us what gives us the most real and lasting joy: it is sharing ourselves in love for others, for our friends, our family, and for our neighbors in need. During Lent, we pay attention to feast-ing on joy, compassion, service and hope so that we might grow in faith all year long. Things to feast on:

• prayer • acts of kindness to others • forgiveness • participating at Church • participating in liturgy and Eucharist • giving our time in service • participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation • acts of service and charity • giving money or food/clothing to people who are hungry or in need

PRAYING Read the Lenten Scripture readings through Lent. Here’s a list for each week:

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 (Ash Wednesday) Luke 4:1-13 (1st Sunday) Luke 9:28b-36 (2nd Sunday) Luke 13:1-9 (3rd Sunday) John 9:1-41 (4th Sunday) John 8:1-11 (5th Sunday) Luke 19:28-40/22:14-23:56 (Passion Sunday) John 13:1-15 (Holy Thursday) John 18:1—19:42 (Good Friday) Luke 24:1-12 (Easter Vigil) John 20:1-9 (Easter Sunday)

*Note: the full schedule is now posted on our website at www.saintjosephcc.com

This year we are doing something new. During the six weeks of Lent, we will focus on the Mass – the Eucharist. We are called to participate in the Mass fully, consciously and actively. The Vatican II Document, Lumen Gentium, says that the Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life”. The Eucharist is the sum and sum-mary of our faith. We will use Bishop Barron’s video presentation in place of the Satur-day and Sunday homily. Each segment lasts between 20 and 25 minutes. That is why we have two television sets in the Sanctuary. The six sessions are as follows: March 9/10 (1st Sunday of Lent) A Privileged Encounter March 16/17 (2nd Sunday of Lent) Called out of the World March 23/24 (3rd Sunday of Lent) God Speaks Our Story March 30/31 (4th Sunday of Lent) Responding to God April 6/7 (5th Sunday of Lent) Preparing for Eucharist April 13/14 (Palm Sunday) The Real Presence Creates Communion After the 5:00 p.m. Saturday and both Sunday Masses, March 16 through April 14, anyone interested can join us for a bit of conversa-tion in St. Francis Hall. Lent is a time of renewal and spiritual growth.

On Saturday, March 30, (9:00 a.m. to noon) we will have a Morn-ing of Reflection, “Go to Joseph”, since this is the Year of St Jo-seph. Plan on attending this session – and continue to be blessed by our God. Finally, I encourage you to fully engage in all the spiritual oppor-tunities available as we approach this very important time of our church year. Participate in Ash Wednesday services. Participate in the Stations of the Cross during Lent. Participate in the Lenten Sunday liturgies. Participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Lent. Spend 15 minutes a day praying during Lent: give thanks to God for all your blessings, pray for a specific personal need prompted by the day's experience, and pray for those who are in need or suffering in your community and the world. I hope you have a blessed day. You are in my daily thoughts and prayers.
