1 Dear Friends, Now that we are well into the new year, February is a time to catch our breath before preparing ourselves for Lent and Easter. We should take this opportunity to listen to or read the stories of the call of the disciples, as set out in our lectionary each Sunday and ask ourselves what we are being called to do. We have each answered a call to worship God through Jesus Christ; for some, this call would have come many years ago while for others it will be more recent. Whichever category you fall into, there is always something God wants us to do NOW. God wills us to show forgiveness, mercy and compassion, just as God bestows those gifts upon us. The „call‟ is not always about preaching from the rooftops. It can simply be a call to speak with someone with whom we have been estranged, or write a letter or help a neighbour. We are continually called to serve God in whatever capacity we can. I have just acquired the new Methodist hymnbook and leave you with these words from Martin Leckebusch: Called by Christ to be disciples Every day in every place, We are not to hide as hermits But to spread the way of grace, Citizens of heaven‟s kingdom, Though this world is where we live, As we serve a faithful master, Faithful service may we give. Richly varied are our pathways, Many callings we pursue; May we use our gifs and talents Always, Lord, to honour you; So in government or commerce, College, hospice, farm or home, Whether volunteers or earning, May we see your kingdom come. ©1999 Kevin Meyhew Ltd. Dear Friends,

Now that we are well into the new year, February is a time to catch our breath before preparing ourselves for Lent and Easter. We should take this opportunity

to listen to or read the stories of the call of the disciples, as set out in our

lectionary each Sunday and ask ourselves what we are being called to do. We have each answered a call to worship God through Jesus Christ; for some, this

call would have come many years ago while for others it will be more recent.

Whichever category you fall into, there is always something God wants us to do

NOW. God wills us to show forgiveness, mercy and compassion, just as God

bestows those gifts upon us. The „call‟ is not always about preaching from the rooftops. It can simply be a call to speak with someone with whom we have

been estranged, or write a letter or help a neighbour. We are continually called to

serve God in whatever capacity we can.

I have just acquired the new Methodist hymnbook and leave you with these

words from Martin Leckebusch:

Called by Christ to be disciples

Every day in every place,

We are not to hide as hermits But to spread the way of grace,

Citizens of heaven‟s kingdom,

Though this world is where we live, As we serve a faithful master,

Faithful service may we give.

Richly varied are our pathways, Many callings we pursue;

May we use our gifs and talents

Always, Lord, to honour you; So in government or commerce,

College, hospice, farm or home,

Whether volunteers or earning, May we see your kingdom come.

THE UNITED REFORMED CHURCH IN CHELTENHAM

In Memoriam: We give thanks for the life of Mair McIndoe who died on

6th December 2011, remembering in our prayers husband Tom and family.

It is with sadness we also report the death of Margaret Coulthurst who

passed away in the early hours of 18th January. Margaret, a retired Elder at

St Andrew‟s, will be missed by Peter and family and many from the

Church.

Our prayers: we hold in our prayers those for whom we are concerned:

Peter Coulthurst, Sadie Smyth, Joy Coskery, Rosie Pearson and Geoff

Harmsworth.

Special thanks:

Thank you for cards and words of condolence on the death of my brother

just before Christmas. They are much appreciated. Maz

Margaret Coulthurst

A few words from someone who was privileged to count Margaret as a

good friend.

She was an easy person to talk to and she never

seemed too busy to listen.

Margaret‟s always had such a great faith that I

was humbled by it. Especially in her later trials

she never wavered in her love and faith in God.

She was an excellent participant in our Bible

Study Group and it was wonderful that she

was able to be there at our Christmas meal for

the Group.

She was an Elder of St Andrew‟s for many years and we travelled

together to Elder‟s meetings often putting the world to rights in

Margaret‟s dry humorous way. She and Peter also spent many years

organising the distribution of In Touch. Music was a particular talent and

Margaret was an enthusiastic participant in the Choir.

There is more I could say about Margaret but at the moment it feels rather

difficult. I do know that there will have been a welcome in Heaven for a

very special person. Although I am immensely saddened by her passing.

I celebrate her wonderful life. Mary Cummings

‘The Tuesday Forum’

Want to know a secret? Well, it‟s not much of a secret really. Well actually

it‟s no secret at all! There‟s a group of ladies and gentlemen who meet

regularly on Tuesday afternoons at St Andrew‟s for a relaxed and informal

entertainment of one sort or another. The URCiC Tuesday Forum is now

well established as a desirable place to come to enjoy good company and

listen to an entertaining and interesting talk. There are talks on such diverse

subjects as model ships, mediaeval art, how uncle Ron won the war, behind

the green baize curtain, lighthouse building and folk music. Added to that

there is the chance to catch up on all the latest news and views - oh all

right, gossip and scandal as well! And if that isn‟t enough there‟s a finale of

tea and biscuits, and even some of those diet-busting cakes from time to

time. And it‟s all for such a small fee, £1.50 per meeting, and much better

value than a “standard” coffee at Starbucks. Comfortable surroundings,

good company, interesting talks and a cuppa: what more could you ask for

on a wet winter afternoon? The Forum already has a good following, but

there‟s always room and welcome for new members. Meetings are at 2.30

pm in the Garden Room at St Andrew‟s on the second and fourth Tuesdays

in the months from September to May, and there‟s a summer outing to

finish off the year.

transport following her hip replacement operation

Elspet

from the Revd Susan M Nuttall

Dear Friends at St Andrew’s

Now that I am settling comfortably into my retirement flat in

Broadway, I want to thank you all very much for your good wishes,

and for the orchid I was given on 5th December; it has found a good

home in the flat!

I have enjoyed the friendship of many of you over nearly ten years,

and will hope to keep in touch, while I make new friends here, and

share in the life and worship of Broadway URC.

Susan

from Andrew Veal

A big thank you to all those from St Andrews and TCiWH who sang

Carols outside Supermarkets to raise money for Christian Aid. A sum of

£181.17 was collected.

In general, churches across Cheltenham raised the princely sum of

£1415.91. Well done.

C4 Children’s Choir: Silent Night

This time the choir took us back to a small Austrian village

in 1816-1818 and the creation of that most touching of all

- Christmas carols. The short musical “Silent Night” gave

the choir a fine opportunity to show off their talent and they

didn‟t fail us, giving a thoroughly enjoyable performance.

There were some catchy songs beautifully sung, some Bavarian/Austrian

knee-slapping dances energetically performed, and some quick and

efficient costume changes with colourful costumes. The music and dances

left us in no doubt that we were in an Alpine village, with a bit of alpine

calling and yodelling thrown in. Lines were remembered without a hitch

and delivered with clarity, especially in the singing of “stille nacht” in the

original German - beautifully done! And, to add to the enjoyment, the

audience had a chance to join in some of the carols. It was not just the

audience who enjoyed the evening - the choir so obviously did too. So a

big round of applause and thanks to everyone, the solo performers, the

choir, the mums and dads who sang with them, the backstage mums and

dads, and the director. See you at the next show!

Keith Norcott

CLASSIC FILM AT WARDEN HILL

Saturday 4th February 2012 at 2.30pm

South Pacific (South Pacific Enterprises Inc. US 1958; U certificate)

directed by Joshua Logan

Starring Rossano Brazi, Mitzi Gaynor and John Kerr

For our first musical in the Classic Film series, we are showing one of

the most successful of the creations of Richard Rodgers and Oscar

Hammerstein II. “South Pacific” followed their triumph with

“Oklahoma” and opened as a stage show on Broadway in 1949. The

show was a huge hit and after the screen success of “Oklahoma”, the

move to cinema in a wide screen format (called Todd AO) came in

1958. The stars were not those from the stage show (Ezio Pinza, the

actor/singer, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera, who created the male

lead had recently died. Giorgio Tozzi from the Met provided the

singing voice for this role in the film.), However, the film was a great

success and its box office take for R&H was only exceeded later by

“Sound of Music”. The only criticism was the use of colour filters

during many of the song sequences. (See what you think!)

The story takes place during the WW2 in the Pacific and centres on the

relationship between American nurse at a U.S. Naval base and an

expatriate French plantation owner. Issues around racial prejudice are

explored in a sensitive and careful manner and indeed the stage show

ran into problems when it toured the US Deep South.

Rogers and Hammerstein produced a string of hit numbers for the show

both funny e.g. “There is nothing like a dame” and tender e.g. “Some

enchanted evening”. Many have become “popular standards”. There

have been a number of successful stage revivals including on

Broadway in 2008 and in London in 2011.

News from St Andrew’s:

St Andrew’s Communion Offering, February 2012

This month we look over the horizon to Africa and Kenya and the Kenya

Project UK. Revd. Maz Allen‟s connection with Kenya began in 2001

with an introduction to St Stephen‟s Children‟s Home in Embu, the

county town in Eastern Province. St Stephen‟s is the brainchild of

Deaconess Jessie, who is employed by the Anglican Church in Kenya.

The home was established to care for the many disadvantaged, orphaned

and abandoned children in Embu, giving them the chance of a settled

existence and an education. The home and some if its children are now

sponsored by a number of members of the URCiC and the Church in

Warden Hill.

Since 2001 much has been achieved at St Stephen‟s with the help of

volunteers from Britain and Canada, for example the provision of a play

room and a playground and medical assistance. The efforts of the

volunteers also made it possible to purchase a piece of land at Gatondo,

about a mile from St Stephen‟s, and in 2008 a health clinic was built there

to serve the local community as well as the children of St Stephen‟s.

Kenya Projects UK was established in 2009 by Revd Maz Allen, Ann

Standring and Julie Jefferies, members of the URCiC. Its objective is to

fund capital projects that will improve the life-styles of the children and

the community. One of its first achievements was to pay for corrective

surgery for a whole group of physically disabled children in a Red Cross

home in Embu. It is currently raising funds to sink a borehole at the

Gatondo Health Clinic, to provide a regular supply much needed fresh

water. £8,000 has already been sent out to finance the necessary

government survey, and the target is to have fresh water available by

2013.

Every two years Revd Maz Allen takes out a group of mainly young

volunteers to get involved in the physical work at Embu and Gatondo.

This exposure to communities that lack so much that we take for granted

is very much a mind-broadening experience and a wonderful opportunity

to meet people whose lives are so different from ours. Maz and Julie and

Ann, who have all had personal experience at Embu and Gatondo, will be

only too pleased to give more information on the charity‟s activities. The

next visit out there is planned for late this year.

St Andrew’s - Redevelopment work follow-up report - David Black

We had a contract meeting on 18th November and agreed that snagging

work in the Hall will be focused on mid March 2012. There are problems

with the door area between the Hall and the Kitchen but we need some

time with the heating on in order to help the floor settle rather than

making several adjustments that leave us with a final situation that does

not work. What was explained is that mops should not be used in the Hall

or on the wood ramp from the Kitchen. There is a large sweep brush

currently stored in the Mews Room that should be used instead and it will

be transferred into the Hall in due course. Anyone who notices any other

problems please bring them to the attention of Bob Alger or Peter

Meason.

We have agreed with Mustoes that the varnishing of doors, pillars and

notice boards will be done before Christmas to update their appearance.

Maz has obtained the lettering for new signage on the Montpellier Street

entrance and we have been recommended to contact a local sign company

about getting them fixed on as that is another aspect that needs

improvement.

While it is not redevelopment work you might have noticed in church that

we have two of the six main lights out of order. It is probable that the

bulbs are reaching the end of their life so we may replace all in a manner

that minimises the cost of hiring scaffolding towers. Similarly a problem

has been noticed with the hatch doors for the kitchen because the initial

fixings were inadequate.

Our architect has summarised work and maintenance still to be completed

and he will be undertaking a formal quinquennial survey to help identify a

priority for that work and other internal items that we need to complete

over the next few years if we are going to keep our premises in good

order. One example is that the flat roof over the Gallery has leaks around

the rooflights that need repairs by an authorised specialist in that type of

roof. Quinquennial surveys are meant to happen within the URC but our

last one was in the mid 1990‟s as we missed the next two rounds because

of our 2001/2002 redevelopment work.

St Andrew's Development Worker

Kay Boulton is the new Development worker based at St Andrew‟s. She

has lived in Cheltenham for 14 years with her husband and two daughters.

In recent years Kay has worked as a Teaching Assistant and in the past

has trained at Bible College and worked in a Church in North London.

Kay is excited about the new post of development worker here at St

Andrew‟s and is enjoying beginning to get to know some of the people

who attend the church and who use the building.

Alongside welcoming the many who come through the building each

week, Kay aims to provide opportunities for meeting with God through

prayer and reflection and to explore ways of effectively using the amazing

facilities.

Kay will be in the St Andrew's on week days between 10am and 2pm and

The Oasis

Opening 27th February 2012

A brand new and exciting venture called The Oasis is starting at St

Andrew‟s Church in February and you are warmly invited to come along

and see for yourself.

The Church sanctuary will be open from 11.30am „til 2pm every week

day offering the opportunity to stop and relax during the day. There will

be areas for prayer and reflection as well as space to eat your lunch

quietly or have a cup of coffee.

There is a wonderful verse in Hebrews 4:16 that says „Let us then

approach God‟s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive

mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.‟ The Oasis is

providing an opportunity for anyone to draw near to God either with

others or on their own.

If you are excited by this new venture and would like to know more or

help in any way please do get in touch with me.

Music in our Churches:

A magic moment to sing in a Promenade concert in the Royal Albert

Hall, London - John Standring

Last year 16 of us from the Gloucester Choral Society and members from

the Bristol Choral Society had the great honour of singing with the BBC

Chorus of Wales in two Promenade Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in

London. For us, there was a heavy commitment of rehearsals in Cardiff

involving many car journeys to Cardiff.- fortunately a car share was

arranged. We were going to sing Havergal Brian‟s massive work - Gothic

Symphony and for the second Promenade Concert, Verdi‟s Requiem.

During the rehearsals for the Gothic and under the baton of conductor

Adrian Partington with excellent pianist, we „ummed‟, „erred‟, „goshed‟ at

the work! It did eventually grow on us after twelve rehearsals especially

with the help of the BBC Welsh Choir. The Gothic Symphony involved 4

good soloists, 800 singers, 7 choirs and 2 children‟s choirs (of which we

were one choir), 2 orchestras and 3 bands. Under the baton of Martyn

Brabbins, full strength rehearsals were made in Birmingham Town Hall,

the Hexagon Theatre in Reading, and Alexandra Palace, one time main

hub of the BBC, in London. With a concert pass at the RAH we were led

to our respective seats to the right of the organ. The Gothic Symphony

music is a fiendish cacophony of-sound with some dynamic and beautiful

bits with a lot of threading! Our hosts looked after us very well at the

rehearsals and during the lead up to the concert.

The Gothic Symphony has been noted to be the largest ever written and

the performance was greeted with much praise.

Our second Promenade Concert, a week later, was Verdi‟s Requiem with

the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, BBC National Orchestra of

Wales and Chorus, the London Philharmonic Choir, together with 4 good

soloists, all under the baton of Semon Bychkov. The tickets for the very

popular requiem were sold out in a matter of hours when going online.

Once again we were thankful to be accommodated nearby in the Imperial

College.

The concert day started off with the tragic shooting in Oslo. In a stunning

silence, it took 40 seconds before the conductor turned around to take a

bow after the performance. Maybe the tragic circumstances of the Oslo

news had some bearing. The televised concert was well received with

glowing reports. For me it was a treasured moment.
