Cynnal schoolsFormer design and technology and ICT teacher, Osian Hughes, works as an ICT Advisor for Cynnal (who monitor standards in schools across Gwynedd and Anglesey LEA’s) and supports ICTco-ordinators/teachers to plan and implement new courses and curriculum. In doing so, he is always on the lookout for innovative ICT products and services for recommendation.At the beginning of 2009 schools across the local authority were facing the challenge of implementing a new ICT curriculum, the OCR Nationals in ICT, and Osian was tasked with finding asuitable solution to guide teachers through the delivery of the courses. He was looking for a resource that specifically addressed the topics teachers would need to cover.

SolutionOsian visits BETT, the world’s largest technology in education show, as it allows him to touch and test the latest resources on offer. At BETT 2009, Osian paid avisit to the Serif stand, interested in the innovative software and OCR Nationals in ICT teaching resources on offer. Serif provided a demonstration highlightinghow the Serif Design Suite was a cost effective solution for delivery of the OCR courses, as well as on a whole school level.

Osian was quickly convinced and the next step was for Cynnal to promote the Design Suite to its schools. Emails were sentto schools encouraging them to attend a presentation day to see for themselves the potential of the suite. As a result, nearlyevery school within the local authority purchased the Design Suite package.

One of the most professional and creative videos Osian has seenis of a boy skateboarding from Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle – he’d filmed himself in a variety of different poses and combineddifferent clips using sepia, black and white and colour.

Case Studies…The Whitby High SchoolSerif is the creative choice for specialist technology school The Whitby High School in Cheshire. They’ve praised its software for enabling its students to create professional and eye-catchingdesigns in ICT, including a logo for a local Healthy Living Centre.

BackgroundRobert Alexander, technology college director at The Whitby High School in Ellesmere Port, approached the local Links Healthy Living Centre wanting to work alongside it on its newCommunity Food Programme. The Links Healthy Living Centre, funded by the NHS and the local council, offers information and advice on health and social welfare issues. Robert wanted toexplore how the school could engage with community activities in their Design Technology and ICT lessons, and Links was about to launch a new project – the Community Food Programme.

ChallengeA drop-in centre for local residents, it was agreed that a group of Year 8 students could design a logo for the new venture in their ICT class, using Serif’s Design Suite. The aim was topromote healthy eating within the community, and students were given a brief from Lydia Orford, the healthy living coordinator, who broadly outlined what the centre wanted the logo tolook like. Ideally the logo had to include the same colours as the current Link logo and preferably incorporate an image of food so the audience would understand the concept of the project.Above all it needed to be visual, eye-catching, and appeal to both children and adults.

The ease of Serif’s Design Suite meant each and every student was able to create a visual andindividual logo, using the ’create pdf‘ function within the DrawPlus X2 software to produce theirdocument to the Links selection panel. The management team selected Zoe Gregory’s impressivelogo, and it has been used on all the publicity materials for the Community Food Programme, aswell as the Centre’s existing website and brochure.

BenefitsLinks Healthy Living Centre was so impressed with the student’s design skills and theideas they came up with, that they have asked The Whitby High School to use Serif’sWebPlus X2 to produce a website for the young people targeted within the project.This will be undertaken by a small group of year 8 students in the next year.
