September / Septiembre 30, 2018 Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time | Vigésimosexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
The Deaf Community existed long before recorded in Christian history. We know that
Jesus met Deaf persons. Before that, the Jewish community had rules for protecting the
Deaf and them to read the Torah. The early Christian church ignored the spiritual needs of the
Deaf. Finally, in 1760 a Catholic monk started educating the Deaf through fingerspelling, so that they could receive
their sacraments. In 1977, the first Catholic Deaf priest was ordained.
St Peters Church offers Sacrament courses at every level for the Catholic Deaf Community. These courses have
been carefully designed by the National Catholic Office for the Deaf and professionals in the field of Deaf
education. St Peter’s religious education classes are offered by a Teacher of the Deaf and students are matched
with Deaf sponsors in small groups to help with understanding their faith in their native language
(ASL). At Easter, the Catholic Deaf community joins with the hearing community to receive
the Rites of Initiation with their fellow hearing Catholics.
Thanks be to God that for 250 years, the Deaf community has had the opportunity for religious
instruction through their native language!
La comunidad sorda existía mucho antes
registrado en la historia Cristiana. Sabemos que Jesús se encontró con personas Sordas. Antes de eso, la comunidad Judía tenía reglas para proteger a los sordos y que leyeran

Please help! Save your beverage containers! St. Peter’s Religious Education Program will be holding
a beverage container fund raiser! We will be collecting beverage cans, beverage plastic
bottles and beverage glass bottles the weekend of November 17 & 18 before the Saturday 6:00 Mass, the
Sunday 9:00 Mass and the Sunday 12:00 Mass. Please help us by sorting the beverage containers by glass, plastic and cans at home. We are NOT able to accept any other recyclable materials at this time.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time: In today’s gospel Jesus tells his disciples: “Anyone who gives you a drink of water because you belong to Christ will not, I assure
you, go without his reward.” On September 27, the Church celebrated the feast of St. Vincent de Paul. The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are on the front line in laboring for the poor, they are among the first to know their real needs. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist families, providing food, utility, rent and other bills. God Bless You! Vigesimosexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario: En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús les dice a sus discípulos: “Cualquiera que te dé agua para beber, porque perteneces a Cristo, te lo aseguro que no se verá sin recompensa”. El 27 de Septiembre, la Iglesia celebró la fiesta de San Vicente de Paúl.
