WORSHIP MATTERS Tom Buck

As summer ends and the fall arrives,

it’s a good time for each of us to do a checkup on our priorities–especially

the spiritual ones. One of the most fundamental priorities of the Christian

life is the faithful, regular gathering as God’s people to worship together. As important as the small gatherings of the

church are, they can never replace or fulfill the command God gives in

Scripture for the church to gather as one body to worship God in song, corporate

prayer, reading of Scripture, preaching, baptism and communion.

Hearing God’s Word preached is a crucial part of worship. In hearing God’s Word,

we profess as a church our dependence upon God for the knowing of his mind and the way of eternal life. The

preaching of God’s Word has been ordained by God to nourish us and

sustain us. So when you come to hear the Word preached, you are not coming to

hear a man talk about his thoughts; you come to sit at God’s feet and profess your submission to him through obedience to

his word.

You will never properly attend to

hearing the Word of God until you first acknowledge the absolute priority of

placing yourself under it. As you look through Scripture, it is evident that God

commands regular and faithful commitment to corporate worship, where we place ourselves under the

regular preaching of God’s Word. Christ speaks to his people through the

preaching of the Word. Romans 10:17 says, “So faith comes from hearing, and

hearing through the word of Christ.” One

critical way that God has designed for faith to come to us and grow within us is

through the preaching of Scripture.

But that is merely the starting point. Acts

17:11 tells us that the Bereans went further in their reception of the Word. We

are told that with great eagerness they looked forward to the hearing of the Word

preached and they would search the Word to validate the claims of the one preaching. This shows the level to which the Bereans

saw the Word as the final authority over their lives. The Word of God had to

validate the messenger. It isn’t the speaker that gives credence to the Word but the

accuracy by which the Word is handled that gives credence to the preacher.

Imagine the impact it would have on your life if you began to have the same level of

seriousness about placing yourself under God’s Word as the Bereans did. My desire is that you would commit yourself afresh to

the priority of corporate worship. Each Sunday, look forward to gathering with

God’s people with eagerness. Come to worship with the mindset that you are going to hear Christ speak to you through

his eternal Word. Believe that God is going to do something great among his people

through the ministry of the Word and that lives are going to be changed - beginning

with your own. And like the Bereans, return home continuing to examine the Scriptures as the final authority for

your life.

WORK FOR THE ETERNAL Ryan Taber

In the third verse of the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon writes:

“What does a man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?” In context, the logical answer that is implied by

the question is “nothing.” We know that Solomon is not advocating that people stop working all together, instead

the implication is that we should work at things that have eternal value. There is no doubt that parenting is hard work, even under the best of circumstances it is likely the most

difficult task that one could be called to. Rather than laboring exclusively to ensure that your children are set up for success

in this life, labor for eternal fruit in the lives of your children. Pray with your children, read and study the Scriptures with

them, help them to prioritize participation in the church, and live a life that reflects the nature of the transformation that the gospel has made in your own life. Lest you get to the end

and realize that you have labored at parenting in vain.

I am going to assume your family is like mine and you are

trying to make the adjustment from the relaxed summer schedule to feeling like you are running around like a chicken

with its head cut off! All the while, still trying to carve out time for your family to be together. There are a lot of “firsts” for us

this year: Andrew is in Junior High and going in 100 different directions, Matthew is at the Middle School, and Libby is in 2nd Grade. There are probably a lot of firsts for your family

as well. I hope you are using this time when your family is starting “new things” in your schedule and your kid’s school, to

add a time for a family devotion. There are hundreds of things your family could add to your schedule, but none of them will

have the eternal reward that spending time together in God’s Word will have for you and your children. If that has not been a part of your family’s regular routine, it does not have to

be hard.

Our family tries to do three things: read, pray, and sing. We will spend time reading God’s Word together (maybe a few chapters, or maybe a few verses) and we talk about how what

we just read should impact our lives. Then we spend time praying (usually in light of what we just read about). Lastly, we

spend time as a family singing praise songs that we all know. If you’re looking for suggestions for your family for any of those

things, I would love to give you some suggestions. You will be glad you did and you will be blessed by the results.

DO WE NEED THE CREEDS? Andrew Pressley (PART 2)

In our last newsletter, I began exploring the topic of creeds.

For many, the practice of reading or reciting creeds feels too

impersonal and formal, perhaps even too heavily associated

with Roman Catholicism. Many evangelicals would say that

they do not make use of creeds, and some Baptists have

even insisted that churches in our denomination have

“no creed but the Bible.” This sounds very noble, but it isn’t

exactly true.

The Baptist Faith and Message, although perhaps not

technically a creed, functions much like one: it summarizes

the content of the beliefs of the partner churches within the

Southern Baptist Convention. Likewise, every church

recites creeds together when they sing: the content of our

songs summarizes our faith. The question isn’t whether or

not we have creeds. The question is whether or not we

examine them.

I’ve heard a lot of theologically faulty platitudes through

the years. “All sin is equal in God’s eyes” (see Jesus’

statement in John 19:11). “We are all God’s children”

(see John’s idea of the heavenly family in John 1:12). “God

needed another angel” (see Paul’s encouragement in

1 Corinthians 6:3). The list goes on and on. We hear these

things, repeat these things, and begin to believe these

things. Just like creeds. It’s amazing how these pithy,

theologically faulty statements shape our thinking.

The best creeds are carefully crafted by groups of people,

written and refined over a period of time with great concern

for biblical accuracy and precision in language. That isn’t

to say that every creed is theologically agreeable, but many

faithful and helpful summaries of the teaching of the Bible

exist and should be celebrated. These creeds are worthy of

being repeated, memorized, and believed. They help shape

our theology and guard us from error in a myriad of ways.

Consider this statement from the Baptist Faith and

Message:

Article I: The Scriptures - The Holy Bible was written by

men divinely inspired and is God's revelation of Himself to

man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God

for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any

mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is

totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by

which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to

the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and

the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds,

and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a

testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine

revelation.

What a wonderful statement! Perhaps you might make a

part of your personal study the regular consideration of

various creeds. In the coming weeks, I’ll be printing various

sections of creeds for you to read and reflect on. In the

meantime, take a look at the rest of the Baptist Faith and

Message (which can be found easily online). I pray the Lord

will bless this endeavor

The flowers you sent to honor Wayne’s mom were beautiful.

It was so fitting that she got to go home and worship Jesus

(like never before) on Mother’s Day. She was the “Meme”

she was because of her great love for our Lord. So grateful

for and to each of you.

PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE Chris Dilley

One of the most amazing texts in all of Scripture resides in 2

Peter 1:4. In this verse, Peter tells his audience that because

of the promises of God in the gospel, they “may become

partakers of the divine nature.” What could this mean? As

one reads the verse in its overall context of 2 Pet. 1:3-11, it

becomes evident that Peter is emphasizing the reality that

believers themselves do not become god in regards to our

nature (there is only one God) but that we become like God.

There is a huge difference between the two statements. So,

in what way(s) do we become “like” God? Peter explains in

verses 5-9 that we become like God in our character and

conduct as we model godliness in our daily lives. He says that

we become like God as we display godly character traits such

as faith, virtue, steadfastness, brotherly love, etc. However,

it’s not enough for us to simply affirm that these character

traits are important; they should actually be increasing in

our lives. In short, we should always be seeking to grow in

godliness through the process of sanctification. In fact, Peter

says that any believer who lacks these qualities is blind,

because they aren’t living as who they really are, as

someone who has been redeemed by the blood of Christ (v.9)

In effect, when we don’t actively pursue godliness in our lives,

we are saying by our actions that we are forgetting the gospel!

Practically, the decision to commit sin for the Christian is also

a decision to forget (in that moment) that our sins have been

forgiven and cleansed and that we are no longer slaves to sin,

but are slaves to righteousness (Rom. 6:18). Some questions

we can ask ourselves after considering this text include: Am I

daily applying the gospel to my life? Am I seriously fighting

against temptation and sin and pursuing godliness? Am I

increasing in godly characteristics, or does my character and

conduct look like the unbelieving world around me? When we

become “partakers of the divine nature,” we are “imaging” God

to everyone we encounter. We are showing in our actions a

glimpse of the character and attributes of God as we display

them in our lives (albeit in a finite, human sort of way). So,

what image are you projecting right now through your actions?

One of the old man, still in his sin, or the new man who is

redeemed and being renewed into the image of his Creator?

(Col. 3:10).

Thank you for lovingly ministering to me during my surgery

and recovery. I appreciate your prayers, card, food, and visits.

I pray God’s blessings for each of you.

Love in Christ,

Pat Blanchard and Family

BOOK REVIEW

Robert Thune: Gospel Eldership

In “Gospel Eldership” author Robert Thune establishes that his book is about church leader-ship. But not just any sort of leadership. He specifically speaks to the role of elders in the local

church. Using biblical passages to make his argument, Thune shows that New Testament local churches should be led by a plurality of qualified, godly men known as elders. Other terms

used in the Bible to refer to the same office include “bishop” and the more commonly used “pastor.”

This is a very [practical and helpful resource, especially to men aspiring to pastoral ministry.

The author invites the reader to do serious spiritual self-introspection into their hearts, helping them to determine areas of needed growth, and whether or not they are biblically qualified to

hold the most important office in the church.
