“The purpose of life is to be happy by being useful, honorable, and compassionate; to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

The second term began with many giving initiatives that speak volumes of the philanthropic spirit of the DPS Dubai family. The ‘School of Hearts’ has worked collaboratively to help the victims afflicted by the Kerala floods. Our students too have been very proactive with their efforts. Many of our initiatives have been reported in the media. Innovation, enterprise, empathy and being mindful to the needs of others is evident in this newsletter. Director Ms. Rashmi Nandkeolyar to assist the staff, inspired the campaign. Each and every one of the staff very generously contributed new or unused articles from their home which was of a minimum value of AED 50. The wholehearted commitment of the staff to the campaign was reflected in the quality of the articles donated which were of great utilitarian and aesthetic value. The teachers were glad to ‘de-clutter’ their homes for such a worthy cause and gave away lovely, and very often loved and prized possessions! The donated items were beautifully exhibited and it was a delight to witness the enthusiasm with which the staff bought the articles. Objects d’art, paintings, electronic goods, cosmetics, kitchenware….simply flew off the display tables. Some items were also auctioned! The campaign’s success lay in the altruistic and giving spirit of the DPS Dubai staff. This initiative was reported in the Gulf News. Kindly follow the link: https://m.gulfnews.com/news/uae/society/cupcakes-campaigns-and-cash-to-support-kerala-1.2274704 Teachers’ Day Celebration at DPS Dubai The students of DPS Dubai made their teachers feel so special on Teachers’ Day as they paid a rich tribute to their mentors on 5 September 2018. The melodious school band sang for their teachers while the dance ensemble entertained and mesmerized, with their heartfelt performance. The Principal and Director expressed her gratitude to the teachers and inspired students to be the best versions of themselves. The teachers marked the day by donating cash for the victims affected by the Kerala floods. The Teachers’ Day celebrations upheld the year’s theme of Global High- Five by promoting philanthropy, collaboration and service to others. The Solidarity Purse – Another Giving Initiative Continuing with our campaign of social responsibility that goes beyond individualism, the Teachers’ Day celebrations on 5 September was an extra special one at DPS Dubai this year. Teachers marked the day by donating cash for the afflicted people of Kerala. The Solidarity Purse is a fund created by the staff for the staff. It’s nice to know that the teachers always stand up for each other. The DPS Dubai family always lives up to its promise of the goals that are set by the themes of the academic year. Our theme Global High-Five is all about cultivating a global mind-set of being able to think creatively to meet challenges, dedicating oneself to issues promoted by altruistic concern, and acting collaboratively to achieve goals. Launch of A New Blog – The Heart of a Teacher Keeping with the theme of compassion and thoughtfulness , on Teachers’ Day, our Principal and Director launched a new blog on our website called ‘ The Heart of Teacher’ where our staff members can share their creativity, class room strategies, inspirational messages and even recipes with the DPSD family. Yoga for Teachers As an endeavor towards attaining an optimal state of well-being and holistic health, the Principal and Director Ms. Rashmi Nandkeolyar has launched a healthy initiative “Yoga for Teachers” which will keep the teachers fit from inside and out, it also aims to provide peace and calmness to one’s mind and soul. ‘Yoga for Teachers’ will be conducted every Tuesday and Thursday after classes, from 2pm to 3:00 pm.

The Principal Mentors the Staff The Principal and Director, Ms. Rashmi Nandkeolyar, conducted a workshop for the staff, which included the use of the Harkness Table in the classroom, and how to successfully transact a differentiated lesson using student data from triangulation. Triangulation maximizes the learning of each student as teaching is personalized and therefore learning is highly effective. The Mentor-Mentee Model of Teaching The Model ensures collaboration for the provision of instruction to students. It is an approach that is aimed to benefit every student in the class. Ha!S – Happiness for Students Rahhal – At the Heart of Inclusion DPS Dubai is a progressive school with inclusion at its very heart. The school has undertaken the “RAHHAL’ program which is the Dubai Government’s commitment to support inclusion. It is a platform to support students who engage in learning activities at anytime and anywhere. It recognizes learning that takes place outside of formal mainstream schools. DPS Dubai Students Uphold the School Motto, ‘Service Before Self’ Our students were prompt in finding ways to support their friends and family affected by the Kerala flood. Upholding the school motto ‘Service before Self”, they gathered supplies and aid for the state. Their efforts were recognized in the media, with Gulf News interviewing our students about their experiences, and their ongoing efforts to aid the flood victims. Acting Philanthropically DPS Dubai Students Visit Al Noor Training Centre for Special Needs DPS Dubai firmly believes in the holistic development of the students by instilling moral values and enabling them to contribute to the society as responsible citizens. As an initiative to uphold the theme of Global High – Five wherein we learn to work philanthropically and collaboratively, our Grade 11 students visited the Al Noor Center for Children with Special Needs on 20th September 2018. The Grade 11 students also contributed AED Five thousand, a fund which was raised by them during the ‘Mufti Day’ held at school earlier. Our students were delighted to interact with the students of the center who showed off their skills, talents and entrepreneurship through the ‘Smiles n Stuff’ Boutique, bakery and the design room which showcased the extraordinary caliber of the ‘Determined Ones’. Our students declared the interaction as a very positive and rewarding experience. The students came away with an important lesson; that no task is too big if you have the grit and resilience. The human spirit is definitely one of courage and perseverance that no disability can take away. This enriching platform, not only provided our students with an opportunity to interact and serve the wider community, but also gave them an insight to the challenges faced by these children, realize their strengths, appreciate their talent and most importantly, understand that these children are not weak but Specially Gifted. Goody Bags for the Ancillary Staff Thank you dear students and parents for your contribution of essential items to make up bountiful goody bags for our cheerful and kind ancillary staff. DPS Dubai deeply appreciates the altruistic spirit of the parents and students who contributed so whole heartedly through the month of Ramadan. The ancillary staff were happy to utilize and enjoy all your gifts during the summer break. At DPS Dubai we never forget that philanthropy lies at the heart of human greatness. Innovation and Enterprise at the forefront of the “Greening and Cleaning” Initiative DPS Dubai has shown us how to dedicate oneself to humanitarian and environmental issues promoted solely by altruistic concern, which lies at the heart of innovation to produce fruitful applications that will benefit the entire world. Vertical Garden to Oxygenate Every Classroom The innovation and entrepreneurship competition for the senior school generated the conception and engineering of the vertical garden. The Engineering Graphics students of Grades XI and XII have designed Vertical Gardens for every classroom; aside from serving as a beautiful decoration, the plants produce oxygen throughout the day. The advantage is twofold; to green and clean every classroom, and also give the opportunity to each student to nurture their very own oxygenating plant.

DPS Dubai Supports the ‘Charitree – Plant for a Cause’ Initiative by Dar Al Ber Society to Facilitate Humanitarian Activities under ‘Year of Zayed’ DPS Dubai partnered with the Dar Al Ber society as part of the ‘ChariTREE – Plant for a cause’ initiative to raise funds to conduct humanitarian activities under ‘Year of Zayed’. Our school bought oxygenating plants, and the funds were donated to the society’s charity. In addition to promoting philanthropic activities, these plants will be used for our Vertical Gardens in every classroom. The Future of Innovation - Makerspace Students from Grade IX upwards are making use of the 3D printer; an almost magical experience, because it transforms their visualization of a 3D object into a tangible model. The fabrication lab is called Makerspace. Exploration is the Essence of the Human Spirit DPS Dubai Students Visit USA DPS Dubai organized a 9 day trip to USA from 30 June to 18 July 2018. It was a great learning experience for the students as they imbibed from the enterprising and innovative spirit of America. The students visited the states of California, Nevada and Arizona. In Los Angeles, the students toured the University of California, the travelers also visited the Griffith Observatory Museum, had fun at the Universal Studios and hiked to the iconic Hollywood Sign. Enroute to Los Angeles for the return journey, the students spent a few happy hours frolicking at the Santa Monica Beach. The visit to the USA ended with a scintillating learning experience at the California Science Centre in Los Angeles. The WE Initiative Brings Together the DPSD Family Delhi Private School Dubai Warriors for Environment Innovative Initiative to Reduce Carbon Footprint. Delhi Private School Dubai is a forward thinking school that has always been at the forefront of sustainability and supported the UAE’s sustainability goal of reducing its carbon footprint. As critical thinking and finding innovative solutions to environmental problems is the focal point of many of the activities of DPS Dubai, the Principal and Director Ms. Rashmi Nandkeolyar has pioneered the WE Project (Warriors for Environment) that has upcycled students’ old school uniforms, and old bedsheets to create eco-friendly bags. The project is a collaborative endeavor by the entire school involving students, teachers, management, parents, and ancillary staff. The WE Project is aimed at creating sentient students who are sensitive to the needs of the environment and work innovatively and productively to bring about positive change. All through the holy month of

Ramadan, the WE Project saw every student bring in their old uniforms and bedsheets that had been carefully laundered by the mothers. Saturday, 23 June 2018 was a lively day at DPS Dubai as mothers of students volunteered to come to school to sew the donated material into uber-cool, eco-friendly bags on the ten sewing machines provided by DPS Dubai. Veena Theeyancheri, mother of Malavika of grade XI spoke of the WE Project as she skillfully crafted a bag, “ being associated with such a worthy cause has inspired me to learn how to upcycle and recycle to make a difference in the environment.” Many mothers also volunteered to make the bags at home. The ancillary staff consisting of creative and artistic Philippians have also showed their keen interest to do their bit for the environment by stitching the bags. The WE Project has far reaching benefits, for example upcycling is more energy efficient as it does not break down the materials but alternatively refashions them using creativity and out-of-the-box-thinking. It also brought the community together to achieve common goals by sharing knowledge and skills. By the year end, DPS Dubai will have created 15,000 eco-friendly carry bags to give away to students to carry their new books and uniforms. A Student Council member said, “DPS Dubai believes that educating the youth today is one of the best ways to address the environmental problems we face, the pooling together of resources and skills by the parent community has added an impetus to the project.” Nidhi Sharma, teacher of grades III-V, expressing her immense happiness at the commitment of the parents and the students to the cause said, “the response from the parent and student community has been phenomenal and it is heartening to see that students and parents are digging into their archives for old school uniforms and bedsheets to extend their life cycle that might otherwise be discarded in landfills. The stupendous success of this venture is a testimony to the fact that Dipsites are well aware of their moral responsibility and are true global citizens.” DPS Dubai has pioneered a plethora of trailblazing projects which has impacted the environment positively. In 2007, DPS Dubai created the first jute bags which made it possible for DPS Dubai to be hailed as a ‘no plastic’ zone. In the year 2017, DPS Dubai adopted ‘vertical gardening’ that entails an aesthetic and creative use of limited space to green the environment. The WE Project, the school’s newest collaborative effort is a creative and productive initiative which is in sync with the themes of the academic year Global High-Five, and Year of Zayed 2018, both of which highlight the fact, that humans are inextricably linked to the natural world. This initiative was reported in the Gulf News. Kindly follow the link: https://gulfnews.com/news/uae/education/dps-dubai-upcycles-old-uniforms-into-bags-for-students-1.2243604

The newsletter is testimony to the philanthropic spirit of the DPS Dubai family who have found joy in giving hack to the community. It is also proof of the immense talent of our students and the school’s commitment to provide holistic education for its students. The students remain high on happiness, equipped as they are with a high level of 21st century skills and focus, bolstered by honest enterprise and grit.

“Nothing else in all life is such a maker of joy and cheer as the privilege of doing good.”
