    Dear GCA members and Neighbors,

August was a very busy month for the GCA

board and committee members. Firstly, we held aplanning meeting to focus on the pr ior it ies thatyou told us was important on the survey. It w a simportant to take a few hours to work on developing concrete plans and activities to address howGCA should move forward. We very proud of theGCA safety patrol as one concre te activityfor safety and security. Howeve r, we needto create other activities that address additionalconcerns for safety, security and to address theconcerns about residential stability, bu sin e s sdevelopment, traffic flow and congestion.

Secondly, we attended a meeting spon-sored by State Rep. Connie Howard and StateSenator Donnie Trotter to discuss specific effortsat preventing violence. House bill HB5400 spon-sored by Rep. Thirdly, we attended a meeting sponsoredby Chicago Educational Facilities Task Force thawas established by the Public Act 96-0803 to in-sure that decisions made by CPS reg ard in gschool facilities will be based on educationallysound and financially responsible principles.

August 10 to September 3 Crime Announcements -Reported to Toya Bey:I have not received a lot of crime announcement information in the past two weeks. I'm hopingthat means everyone is paying more attention to what happens on their block and things mayhave slowed down some. I do know that more folks are calling the 6th District Watch Commander along with 911. But the Watch Commander is telling them to call 911. I am checking into thwith Commander Johnson because that is not what he told me to tell our group. So I will getback to you on that one. Here are incidents that have recently been reported to me. A 17 yearold boy was shot and killed Thursday, September 2 in the Chatham neighborhood authorities said. The shootinghappened about 2:15 p.m. in an alley near East 78th Street & S. Cottage Grove Avenue. The teenager was shotseveral times by one of two people who confronted him according to Chicago Police. The victim staggered be-hind a church near 78th & Cottage Grove & was taken to Jackson Park Hospital by ambulance, officials said.

The shooting may have been gang related. On Wednesday, September 1, around 10:05 p.m., a rock was throwninto the front picture window of a home on the 8100 block of S. Michigan. The window was broken. To prevent

something like this from happening to you, if you have a large picture window, consider this: if your front publicarea is dark, a motion light or spot light over those big picture windows. It may keep cowardly behavior like this

at bay. On either August 30 or 31 at late night or early morning, a Buick LaSabre was stolen in the front of ahouse on the 8200 block of S. Michigan. An elderly neighbor had the door of her garage kicked in between Sundaynight, August 29 and 8:30 a.m. Monday morning, August 30.The garage sits on the Calumet side of the 80th& King Drive block/Calumet alley in the middle of the block. Most of the neighbors in the areathat go down thisalley in recent weeks know there was nothing in therebecause the overhead door was just replaced. That hap-pened after someunknown driver backed into it & knocked it off the rails a couple of monthsago (We don't knowif that was done on purpose). In any case the police were called & a report made out. But as an extraprecautionthe bushes near the door have been cut down. IMPORTANT: SUSPECT VEHICLE SIGHTING: onFriday, August 20: Suspicious White Chevy Astro Van: License plate 84000V. Contains twoblack males. Repeatedly seen circling neighborhood & pointing to houses as they drive by .

Exercise caution. If you see this suspicious white, Chevy Astro van, call the 6th District Watch Commanderimmediately! 911 is primarily focused on in-progress burglaries. Suspicious activity is not a priority.A homeburglary occurred between 3:00 am on Monday - 12:30 pm on August 10 on East 87th street. They broke theglass on the rear security door & then kicked in the door to the house. This is the second break-in in a year onthis home. They ramshackle the house & took a brown fur coat, a jar of change, jewelry & tools. This neighborsays there is a suspicious house on their block with undesirables living there. It's important now for you to callCHA's Hotline Number: 1.800.533.0441 & make a complaint, if you think the behavior of the people in a home orapartment building is way out of synch with the rest of our neighborhood. Though don't be surprised if you findout later that the home isn't a CHA home. This has happened twice with complaints.
