JOHN HERSEY HIGH SCHOOL BANDS NEWSLETTER

Thanks for the help this summer!

Private Lessons at Hersey

Due to our fantastic facility and improved abilities of our students, we are turning away many private teachers that would like to be a part of our program. I have interviewed and selected all of the private lesson teachers on staff at Hersey from a large pool of applicants. This group of professionals are handpicked and will make a HUGE difference to our student’s success!! The resumes are impressive and personalities appropriate. All of the teachers at Hersey have gone through the same security checks that all teachers in District 214 must clear. I ENCOURAGE you to have your son/daughter study with one of these hand-picked teachers. Currently, ALL members of the Symphonic Band study privately and app. 80% of the concert band study privately.

Flute: Marcia Rudin (excellent local teacher) Hideko Amano (excellent local teacher) Oboe: Julie Koscinski(excellent local teacher) Clarinet: Judy Morrison - outstanding teacher with lots of great experience Darleen Carl-Beck - very busy and outstanding professional clarinet player in the Chicago area Saxophone: David Fivecoate (One of the most in demand teachers in Chicagoland area) Trumpet: Mr. Chris O’Hara (founding member of the Synergy Brass Quintet) French Horn: Ms. Dana Sherman (Freelance horn player in the Chicago area and Northwestern grad) Trombone: Mr. Jeff Livorsi (local professional Musician) Baritone/Tuba: Mike Hogg, In-demand freelancer Percussion Tom Leddy: local musician with lots of excellent playing and teaching experience.

You can find the email addresses of these teachers at https://herseyband.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Private-lesson-teachers.pdf or email me for additional information to study with one of these HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TEACHERS at Hersey. With auditions coming up, don’t wait to get started. NOTE: PRIVATE LESSONS TAUGHT AT HERSEY WILL BE UNDERGOING ADJUSTMENTS – MORE INFO TO FOLLOW SOON.

Upcoming Auditions

Hersey Auditions: Hersey auditions will begin the week of October 21. They will consist of two short etudes and the scale sheet. Freshman, particularly, should start work on the scale sheet as soon as possible to be ready by that time. There will also be sightreading. The sightreading component on SMARTMUSIC is truly outstanding and a vital tool to improving this skill in your playing repertoire, as well as improving your audition scores. The list of etudes and scales were made available in class and the exact etudes will be available to students at the beginning of September. They can also be found at: https://ilmea.org/divisions

IMEA District VII Band:

District Band pre-auditions will be held the week of September 9 (!!). All players sitting in the top three chairs of their section (or more) in Symphonic Band should be pre-auditioning for District Band. The etudes are the same as last March’s audition and this October’s audition (entire etude used for IMEA, however). As in the past we can only send the top 18 auditioners to audition for the IMEA Band and 12 auditioners for the IMEA Jazz Bands. Hersey annually sends the most students in our district to participate, including in some years 100% of those that make the Hersey cut to audition. This is also a great opportunity for students to be prepared for their upcoming auditions, which will consist of the same material as the IMEA auditions. The one on one feedback from Mr. C is very valuable, as well.

Senior Night

Marching Band seniors and their parents will be honored before the home football game scheduled on Friday, September 13. Parents should plan to arrive at approximately 6:15pm for this ceremony that will take place on the track before the game. More details and a confirmation will be sent home with your son/daughter. It’s important that every senior has a parent to be with them. Please let me know ASAP if you are unable to attend so we can have coverage for them.

Message from the President – Todd Niemiec [email protected]

Thank you all for your attendance at the Parent Preview! I look forward to serving you and the program this year and am thankful for all of the amazing fellow Board Members and Chairpersons that work so hard to support our students – we cannot do it without all of you!

I, once again, want to thank all of the summer parade volunteers, uniform volunteers, and band camp volunteers that have allowed the students to learn and grow together so quickly. Thank you so much to Vice President Julie Siegel for coordinating the volunteers and feeding the Clinicians!

Hard work, accountability and support are hallmarks of the Hersey Band program (on all fronts) and I want to thank all of you for your continued support of our students and the program. The example that you set for our students and community through your volunteer work does not go unnoticed.

We need volunteers throughout the marching season and beyond, and we have numerous parents of seniors that need shadows for next year. Please get involved – you will not regret it! While specialized experience is a plus, most of the chairperson roles are easily learned. Please reach out to me, or to the Vice President, Julie Siegel [email protected] with any questions.

Plan to attend our competitions this Fall, wear your Spirit Wear, lanyards and BE LOUD AND PROUD! It’s going to be a great marching season and school year!

Mark your calendars for our First HIA General Meeting on Tuesday September 3 at 7:30pm in the Band Room. Please plan on attending as we share important committee updates and Mr. C will fill us in on progress with the Marching Season.

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED! Thanks to everyone who signed up to help out during our fall marching band season. We still have a few openings, and some new requests on our sign-up: • Weekly Rehearsal Hydration Specialists on 9/25 from 6:00 - 8:45 PM

• Equipment and Road Crew volunteers to move props and equipment.

• 1 Uniform Monitor needed: for the 9/6 Home Football Game and 2 Uniform monitors for the 10/25 Home Football Game

• NEW - 4 volunteers to sell tickets at the home football games from 6:15 to about half time. HIA will split the proceeds with orchestra and CAPs. This can be found on the Home Football Games tab.

Please see the Sign-Up Genius to volunteer for any of these opportunities: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f054da5ab2fa3fa7-fall

We are looking for chaperones for our marching competitions and events. If you are interested in becoming a chaperone, please contact Irene Gillespie at [email protected],

Please consider volunteering to help organize our second largest fundraiser of the year by serving on the “In Good Taste” Craft Beer and Wine Tasting Committee. In Good Taste is an event for adults 21 years and older only. The committee will begin meeting in mid September and the event will be held on Saturday, February 1st at the Metropolis Ballroom. Volunteer opportunities within this committee range from donation solicitation, publicity, game and venue planning, designing the flyer, and decorating activities.

The Co-chairs, and a majority of the In Good Taste committee, are graduating this year. New committee members are crucial to keep this committee running well. We are also looking for someone (or two people) to shadow Irene and Clay Gillespie to learn the process. The shadow(s) would take over the committee for next year. If you’re interested please reach out to Irene Gillespie at [email protected].

For next year, we will have some open committee positions as students graduate from Hersey. I will list some of them here so you can see if this something you’d be interested in chairing for next year.Band Camp Kits, Organize the Marching Band Party, Cheesecake Fundraiser, Magazine Sales, Tickets for events, Chaperone Coordinator, Competition Meals for students, Cookies by the Pound Fundraiser, and Jazz Night.

Please let me, or anyone on the Board, know if you are interested in any of these positions or would like more information about them. Many of these committees are still going on or have not started yet. For that reason, it is a great time to learn the procedures first hand from the current committee chairperson.

I hope to see you at our HIA Board meeting on Tuesday September 3rd! Thank you for all that you do!

The Scrip Gift Card Fundraiser is a program where you can buy gift cards at face value from Scrip and a rebate from the gift card of 1.5% to 30%, depending on the retailer, goes directly to HIA. HIA then splits the fundraising rebates between your student account (80%) and HIA general fund (20%)! You can use $$$ from your student account to pay for anything like band fees, private lesson fees, trip to Kennedy Center, etc. An easy way to earn money by purchasing gift cards for stores you shop everyday! It is very simple to shop at Scrip. To find out how to sign up for Scrip and other details, click this link: https://herseyband.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Scrip-Gift-Card-Fundraiser-Program.pdf or view the next page of the newsletter. To view a list of retailers, types of cards they offer, denominations and the rebate percentage, click this link: https://herseyband.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ScripRetailersList.pdf The rebate percentage can vary sometimes as Scrip runs daily or weekly specials. You can find these specials when you login to your Scrip account. Scrip offers 3 types of gift card options (depending on the retailer): 1) Physical - Once a month (see payment dates and delivery dates below). Physical gift cards are available one week after the order after school and before marching band rehearsal. 2) Scrip Now/eCard - You can purchase these anytime. You also have an option to send someone a gift (either now or future dated). Electronic gift cards (eCards) are delivered within minutes via email. 3) Reload - If you have purchased a gift card through your Scrip program within the last year, you can reload the card. Scrip offers 2 types of payments: 1) You can link your Scrip account to your Bank Account (PrestoPay™). This is a very convenient option and Scrip only charges a flat fee of $0.15 per transaction. 2) You can send a check to HIA. This option is only available once a month. Note: Scrip is planning to announce that in mid to late August, in addition to linking a bank account (PrestoPay™), families that have access to online payments can choose to pay for gift cards with credit cards. Here are some important details about this new payment option: · Credit card types: Visa and Mastercard will be accepted. · Rebates: The rebate is not impacted—you, and HIA, still earn the same amount. · Purchases: A 2.6% fee is added to your order total each time you pay with a credit card. HIA does not pay a fee. Credit card payments will be processed immediately. If you have any questions, contact Reeta Chhabria at [email protected] or (847) 372-6475.

Attention Hersey Band Families – Do you shop at Amazon? Do you know that you can designate a portion of your Amazon purchase price to benefit Hersey Instrumental Association by using AmazonSmile every time you shop?

What is AmazonSmile?

AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support Hersey Instrumental Association every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to Hersey Instrumental Association.

How do I shop at AmazonSmile?

To shop at AmazonSmile simply go to smile.amazon.com from the web browser on your computer or mobile device. You may also want to add a bookmark to smile.amazon.com to make it even easier to return and start your shopping at AmazonSmile.

Which products on AmazonSmile are eligible for charitable donations?

Tens of millions of products on AmazonSmile are eligible for donations. You will see eligible products marked “Eligible for AmazonSmile donation” on their product detail pages.

Can I use my existing Amazon.com account on AmazonSmile?

Yes, you use the same account on Amazon.com and AmazonSmile. Your shopping cart, Wish List, wedding or baby registry, and other account settings are also the same.

How do I select Hersey Instrumental Association to support when shopping on AmazonSmile?

On your first visit to AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), you need to select Hersey Instrumental Assn Inc. to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. Amazon will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation.

How much of my purchase does Amazon donate?

The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases. From time to time, Amazon may offer special, limited time promotions that increase the donation amount on one or more products or services.

How can I learn more about AmazonSmile?

Please see complete AmazonSmile program details.

STAY INFORMED WITH BAND E-BLAST UPDATES:

In order to stay informed throughout the year, it is very important that you are subscribed to our E-blast list. Please let me know if your email changes or you want to add an email

address at [email protected]. You may subscribe multiple e-mail addresses for your family if you wish.

REMIND TEXTS:

We will again be using Remind to text information out on a regular basis. This reduces the number of email blasts sent. Due to changes at Remind we now have separate text groups for each class. These groups are for parents only, students have their own Remind group. Please join the appropriate class or classes based on your child’s year. If you have not yet signed up for these texts, you have ALREADY missed a GREAT deal of VERY important
