Hello everyone, and a belated Happy New Year! Welcome to the January edition of Ovation. We start 2015 on a really high note. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, dedication and commitment throughout the festive period, I’m delighted to report that December 2014 was another record-breaking month for ATG. And once again, it became the best December in the Group’s history with profits up 13% on the previous year and £40.5 million Gross Box Office. Pantomime sales were up 3% on the previous December and our Christmas shows performed extremely well, including a sell out run of Jersey Boys at the New Alexandra Theatre our best ever Christmas show in Birmingham. And we enjoyed record results in London too with The Lion King achieving 95% occupancy throughout December and Wicked achieving 80% occupancy. Thank you to each and every one of you. We really couldn’t achieve this without you. At this point, we must say a special thank you and also congratulations to Kevin Wood, Laura Taylor and everyone at First Family Entertainment, who have just celebrated their 10 th birthday. Without FFE, Christmas would be a very different affair and we certainly wouldn’t be achieving such record-breaking figures year on year. Over the past decade, FFE have not only entertained millions of customers in our venues with their fantastic critically-acclaimed star-filled pantomimes, but they have also transformed the pantomime landscape. By raising the bar within the industry, FFE have literally altered people’s perceptions of pantomime with quality script-writing, beautiful set designs, and first rate casting including star performances from US legends. FFE are the industry leaders and they have set the benchmark for others to follow. Happy Birthday FFE! This week we held the fifth annual ATG Management Away Day at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. During the evening dinner we presented the Away Day Awards to a group of extremely worthy recipients for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the company. Congratulations to all our award winners. You can find out who they are by heading to the awards article in this edition of Ovation. Special thanks must go to Julia Potts, Sophie Maddison and Carolyn Griffiths for their fantastic organisation of the whole event, to John Young, Stuart Graham and Colin Ashman for the technical operations on the day, to Kevin Wood and FFE for providing the evening’s entertainment and to Elizabeth Adlington, Jenny Hutchinson and everyone at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre for once again being such wonderful hosts.

Coming up, an important date on the ATG calendar is our annual involvement with WWF’s Earth Hour. Thanks to Juliet Hayes, the entire Group will once again be showing its support for this environmental awareness event by switching off all external non-essential lighting in our venues and offices for one hour. This year’s event will take place between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday 28 March, so please save the date in your diaries. There are also plenty of productions to look forward to in 2015. Highlights include a third production in the current Trafalgar Transformed season - The Ruling Class starring James McAvoy (which held its press night this week), Tamsin Greig starring in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown; new UK Tours of Spamalot and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; and Theatre Royal Brighton Productions co-produces Arcadia with ETT on a UK Tour. FFE CELEBRATES 10 GLITTERING YEARS!

First Family Entertainment (FFE) celebrated its 10th anniversary in style with a big showbiz affair at the Cafe de Paris last weekend. People from all corners of the industry attended who have all helped make FFE the success that it is. Entertainment was provided by the Tenors of Rock and an

appropriately themed cake shaped like a Cinderella carriage took pride of place. FFE would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody in the ATG venues who have been involved in our shows over the last 10 years. Here’s to the next 10!

NEW YORK NEWS ROUND-UP

Over in the US, January has brought many changes to the Lyric office environment as the team welcomed new Financial Controller, Zane Parry, as well as two spring interns, Abby Case and Laura Sisk.

The Lyric team have continued to welcome Tony voters attending On the Town with hospitality in the Ambassador Lounge, and the production is partaking in Broadway-wide ticketing initiatives including Broadway Week and Kid’s Night on Broadway. The theatre also played host to its first major event of the year, an annual gala for the venue’s landlord, The New 42nd Street Inc. The lobby spaces were transformed into a whimsical forest setting, complete with billowing drapery, wisteria arches, and a full-size tree in the centre of the main lobby. The event received rave reviews from its attendees, and the team is now focusing on the next big event later this spring.

WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN OPENS IN LONDON

ATG’s hotly-tipped new production of David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane’s new musical comedy adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s Oscar-nominated film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown held its press night at The Playhouse Theatre in London earlier this

month. Starring Olivier-Award winner Tamsin Greig in her musical theatre debut and directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher, the production also features an international cast that includes Ricardo Afonso, Marianne Benedict, Haydn Gwynne, Seline Hizli, Holly James, Michael Matus, Rebecca McKinnis, Sarah Moyle, Alastair Natkiel, Haydn Oakley, Jérôme Pradon, Nuno Queimado, Dale Rapley, Anna Skellern, and Willemijn Verkaik. Originally based by Almodóvar on Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice, and inspired by the comedy of Billy Wilder and Feydeau, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown was his first international hit. It captured a liberated Spain, placing women at the centre of their own experience. Pepa (Tamsin Greig), Candela (Anna Skellern) and Lucia (Haydn Gwynne) became iconic, showing women struggling for power over their own lives, and was filled with enormous humour and style. It also marked the breakout of one of our most important and unique international film directors. A glitzy press night party was held at The Royal Horseguards Hotel in London. Check out our gallery to see which stars walked down the red carpet. ATG APPOINTS STUART GRIFFITHS AS PROGRAMMING DIRECTOR

ATG has appointed leading UK theatre executive Stuart Griffiths in the new role of Programming Director as the company continues its UK and international expansion.

Griffiths joins the company full time in July 2015 and will work with Michael Lynas, ATG’s Managing Director (Content), to deliver top quality productions across the Group. Griffiths’ distinguished career in regional theatre management has included twelve years as Chief Executive of the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre Trust and, prior to that, ten years as Chief Executive of the Swan Theatre, High Wycombe. He is Chair of UK touring producer Music and Lyrics and of international dance promoter the Dance Consortium. He is a Council member of Arts Council Midlands. He was awarded an OBE in the 2015 New Year’s Honours for services to the arts in Birmingham. Griffiths said “I am sorry to be leaving Birmingham after twelve wonderful years at the Hippodrome but delighted to be joining ATG at such an exciting time in its development. Delivering outstanding productions to its audiences is at the heart of ATG’s success. I look forward to working with the group’s dedicated and experienced programming team.” Lynas said “This newly created post is crucial to the development of ATG’s UK programming strategy. Bringing the very best shows to our theatres is our top priority and Stuart’s knowledge and experience will help us achieve that goal as the company continues to expand.” GLASGOW STAFF CELEBRATE ROBERT BURNS NIGHT!

The King’s and Theatre Royal staff celebrated Robert Burns Night with a traditional ceilidh and a selfie to rival the Oscars. 2014 has been an outstanding year for the Glasgow venues -

The King’s was shortlisted for Glasgow’s Favourite Business and Head Stage Door Keeper Joan Neil received an Inspiring City Award for 40 years (and continuing) commitment to the theatre. Wicked made its Scottish Premiere breaking box office records becoming the highest grossing production in the history of The King’s with the largest ever number of tickets sold in a four week run. The Grand Ole Lady of Bath Street also celebrated her 110th anniversary and 50 years of presenting panto. Meanwhile the Theatre Royal’s £14million revamp was completed and the brand new foyer area opened to the public. It includes a dramatic new entrance, spiralling staircases, a new box office, lift access, a rooftop terrace and the addition of a cafe, ‘Vanilla Black at the Theatre’. Staff were rewarded for all their hard work with an evening of dance, live music, food and the Address Tae the Haggis looking forward to 2015!

FAREWELL TO MARTIN COOK Just before Christmas, ATG bid farewell to Martin Cook, our Financial Director and Company Secretary. Martin enjoyed a 20 year career with ATG but recently decided

to take a career break whilst preparing to become a dad for the first time, and getting a house with his new fiancée in Somerset. Martin enjoyed a number of leaving parties including one at L'Escargot in London, which was attended by Howard and Rosemary, and one at the Beijing Restaurant in Woking (a favourite haunt with the Woking team). Unfortunately, there are no photos of the elusive Martin at his leaving parties, but we are happy to report that he had many leaving presents, including most notably for him, his dream Lego set – The Deathstar! We wish Martin all the very best for the future and the exciting times that lie ahead. GREEN FINGERED STAFF PLANT TREES FOR LIFE

Green fingered staff from Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre have been rolling up their sleeves as part of an exciting environmental initiative. After raising a staggering £1,250 for the charity Trees For Life

since June 2013, they were able to plant five mature trees and 500 saplings in Ley Hill Park in Bartley Green, Birmingham. The fundraising was championed by Acting Assistant General Manager Becky Charles. Becky said, “We launched the fundraising for Trees For Life in June 2013 to coincide with World Environmental Day. “We wanted to contribute to more trees for the environment whilst reducing our carbon footprint, and giving something to our local community. We have fundraised with raffles, selling sweets and cupcakes and bucket collections, involving staff and patrons. “We are delighted to have been able to plant the trees and saplings and give something back to the community.” The event was part of Birmingham Trees for Life's Big Tree Plant programme.

LAURA PREPARES FOR SAHARA DESERT TREK

Milton Keynes Theatre Development Manager, Laura Charnock, is gearing up for the journey of a lifetime as she prepares to trek across the Sahara Desert in March. Having previously raised over

£3000 for local charity, Climb Every Mountain, Laura will now use the Sahara expedition to raise money for Smiley Club, a Bedford based youth club for children with special needs. Operated by a team of loyal volunteers, the club provides a safe and fun environment for young people between the ages of 9 and 18 with learning and physical disabilities and gives them the chance to enjoy a social life, activities, sports, day trips and events. “I will be walking 100 miles through a forbidding landscape, punctuated by peaks, formidable gorges and bright oases,” said Laura. “During my expedition the terrain is diverse - sand dune fields, rugged stony ground, dried up river beds and large rocky outcrops - in temperatures of up to 40 degrees. At the end of a grueling days trek there is no luxury bed - I will be camping each night where temperatures drop as low as zero degrees. “After the trek I will spend two days helping on a range of tasks that supports vulnerable members of the community - such as the poor and old people who don't have family to support them. There is also a centre for young people who are in difficult social situations. The project is based in Marrakesh and the help will go along way to improving the lives of local people.” Laura added, “This is my last challenge for a while – the marathons and the treks and the training have all taken their toll and it becomes harder and harder to keep going.” To support Laura’s Sahara Trek appeal, please visit her fundraising page here MOUNT KILIMANJARO CLIMB FOR EMMA LOUISE

On 20 February, the Apollo Victoria’s Box Office Assistant, Emma Louise Merritt, will climb MountKilimanjaro to raise money for the Refuge charity. Emma said, “Climbing Kilimanjaro is my first experience of fundraising. I have paid for and organised the trek

independently so every penny donated will go directly to my chosen charity, Refuge.

“I will be ascending one of the most amazing mountains on the planet. Based in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro is special because at around 6000m high, it challenges you with 4 seasons' conditions in the space of four days! Sweaty, jungle terrain at the base moving to arctic -20 conditions at the summit! Quite the adventure and I can't wait to get started! “My target is £3000 and I would be so grateful if I could get anywhere near that amount. “As well as climbing the mountain, I am holding a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party here at the Apollo Victoria for all of the Admin, FOH, Box Office and Merchandise staff on 11 February and I’ll be hosting a pub quiz in my local Real Ale pub.” Refuge is a national charity for women and children who experience domestic violence, providing emergency accommodation and emotional and practical support. If you’d like to support Emma Louise, please visit her fundraising page here GETTING TO KNOW YOU TEAM SERIES: BIRMINGHAM MARKETING DEPARTMENT

What are your roles at ATG and where are you based?

Hannah Brooks: Head of Marketing and Sales, New Alexandra Theatre Birmingham

Hannah James: Deputy Marketing Manager, New Alexandra Theatre Birmingham

Emma Rowan: Marketing Development Officer, New Alexandra Theatre Birmingham

Fiona McCartney: Press Officer, New Alexandra Theatre Birmingham

James Taylor: Marketing Assistant, New Alexandra Theatre Birmingham

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Hannah B: Happy, Enthusiastic, Ambitious

Hannah J: Modest attention-seeker Emma: Tiny tea drinker

Fiona: Honest, down-to-earth, loyal James: Witty, exciting, fearless

What’s your greatest achievement at work? Hannah B: Working with my team here to achieve many amazing results including doubling gross box office revenue and increasing attendances by 49% in a year. We’re all very proud to have broken previous venue Box Office records with our 4-week Christmas run of Jersey Boys. And… managing to work in an office with another Hannah and still be recognised as two separate people!

Hannah J: Being part of the team that created our first float at the 2013 Birmingham Christmas Parade, we’re talking snow machines and a near on crowd crush to get to Peppa Pig’s equivalent to One Direction: Mr Potato.

Emma: Last year was strong. We achieved some pretty impressive things and managed to maintain a sense of humour during The Great Pipe Burst! Leaky Blinders 2014. Fiona: Working in a job I love in an industry I am passionate about.

James: Sharing an office with 4 women and coming out alive when they are on a man hating day! If you won the Lottery, what would your first purchase be and why? Hannah B: Something really funny and random because that’s a question you will forever get asked. Like a goat. Or a cheese fondue (I do need to purchase one of these). Or another urn (another, don’t ask).

Hannah J: My own discotheque so I could give the people what they want and show them my shapes.....every....single....night. Emma: I’d buy my own utilities company. Them jokers win the lottery every month! Then I’d buy a house with loads of land. Fiona: A villa in Spain for my mum. James: Harley Davidson – Always wanted one and would be easy to park in town.

What was the last album you downloaded? Hannah B: Hozier’s new album - this makes me sound cooler than I am.

Hannah J: The Very Best of The Lighthouse Family. Emma: Long Way Down – Tom Odell. Fiona: The soundtrack to Sunshine On Leith – Please bring this show to ATG venues!

James: McBusted – Not ashamed.

What do you drive? Hannah B: A Fiat Punto, which is about to be sold because it turns out it was more for ‘decorative purposes’ living in Birmingham city centre.

Hannah J: I do not presently own a vehicle of any kind. Emma: Nothing - my little Ford Fiesta went to the big scrapyard in the sky. I like to think of her up there now, waving her windscreen wipers and running around with my childhood pets. Fiona: A barge... how else do you navigate Brum’s canals? James: A Mini Clubman.

What three films would you take to a desert island and why? Hannah B: Into the Wild (watch it!) for inspiration and tips, Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 (yes, 2) because I will never get bored of them.

Hannah J: The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King Emma: Rocky I, II & III – so when I get rescued my colleagues can stop berating me for having never seen them. Plus I’d learn some skills to deal with any pirates. Fiona: 500 days Of Summer – For the soundtrack alone Kill Bill 2, Pulp Fiction or True Romance – Tarantino Rocky 4 – I will break you! James: Mrs Doubtfire – One of the greatest comedy films EVER! Home Alone – just a classic film, Cast Away –it will help to get some tips with living on this desert.

Who’s your sporting icon? Hannah B: For me, it is Paralympians that really inspire me the most. I was lucky enough to see Lee Pearson take bronze in the 2012 Paralympic dressage in Greenwich Park. And no, dressage is not just ‘dancing horses’!

Hannah J: Geoff Capes. Emma: Seabiscuit. He was one spirited little horse. Fiona: Giant Haystacks – sportsman/showman James: Hulk Hogan – Used to love wrestling plus the man knows how to wear a tash!

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt and why? Hannah B: An RSPCA inspector. Or a Police Officer. I would be terrible at both so I’ll stick to marketing (my Managers can relax!)

Hannah J: Zookeeper. Mainly because I prefer animals over people. Emma: Criminal lawyer – when Broadchurch is on I genuinely believe I’m in court. My dad tried to speak during 1 episode so I handed him 120 hours Community Service. Fiona: Personal assistant to Jamie Dornan – Does that need an explanation? James: Stuntman – always wanted to do the crazy things they do.

If your life was turned into a musical, who would play the role of you and what song would be the show's main anthem? Hannah B: A younger Kate Winslet… yes she sings, anyone remember ‘What If?’ (throwback!) and my main anthem would be ‘Here I go again on my own’ by Whitesnake.

Hannah J: Miriam Margolyes. The anthem would be ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’. Emma: Benedict Cumberbatch - I genuinely believe there’s no role he can’t play, including a 5ft female Marketing Officer. Main anthem would be Elton John’s ‘Tiny Dancer’. Fiona: Juliette Lewis with the main song The Ramones ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’ – because that would be rock n’ roll. James: Lee Evans (the ears). Main Anthem – ‘Don’t Stop me Now’ by Queen. What TV show would you like to see transformed into a stage show? Hannah B: Cheers. I reckon Ted Danson would be up for it too.

Hannah J: Embarrassing Bodies.

Emma: Button Moon – I was obsessed with this as a kid! Fiona: Breaking Bad - but only if the original cast were up for it. James: Big Bang Theory or Friends. Where are you going on holiday this year? Hannah B: Short visits to Ireland and Hamburg to visit friends and hopefully a return to Italy. And much to the amusement of the team I plan to learn to sail in the summer in Essex. Now that I’ve moved about as far from water as you can possibly get, yes I fancy learning to sail!

Hannah J: No current plans but hopefully a city break somewhere....maybe Barcelona or Rome. Emma: Devon with 9 members of my family and a screaming newborn. Then Morocco to recover from the aforementioned family holiday. Fiona: Two weeks lounging on a beach in Mexico with a margarita would be ideal. But I have kids so most likely a caravan in Bognor. James: Somewhere in the UK as the wife can’t fly being pregnant. If you had a time machine where would you go and why? Hannah B: I wouldn’t want to, it’s important to live in the moment and not have regrets or worry about the future. Oh wait, actually I’d go and research the future’s stock markets, come back, invest, make a zillion pounds and retire. That’s a better answer.

Hannah J: The Triassic period so I could high five a T-Rex. Emma: I’m a Shakespeare nerd so I’d go to Stratford circa 1594, take a cheeky Shakespeare selfie (Shelfie?) whilst he’s mid verse and put those ‘he didn’t really write them’ rumours to bed. Fiona: New York in the late 1970s to see The Ramones live at CBGBs.

James: I would go back to Wembley 1986 to see Queen Live to see Freddie Mercury Live. What’s your ideal Friday night out?

Hannah B: Good food, Prosecco or craft beer, exploring this amazing city, good people, laughter and live music.

Hannah J: A mime class followed by a glass of port.

Emma: I prefer nights in so I’d get my friends round and operate a small wine bar out of my kitchen. Fiona: A good curry followed by a gin or three. James: Cinema for a good film, possibly a game of pool or two and then out for a curry.
