KNIGHTS HONOREDKNIGHTS HONOREDKNIGHTS HONORED By Dave Lewis

Knight of the Month - July, 2019 Mike Brzezniak

Brother Mike is a tireless worker for Council 8482. In July, he led the cook team preparing the appetizers for Casino Knight. Last year he pre-pared three “2-meat” BBQ Dinners for 20 people. These dinners are ex-tremely desirable auction items. Just

ask Jim McBane for various events hosted by Prince of Peace and our Council including the re-cent Casino Night. Mike, working with Vince Bonu-ra, helped optimize the ordering for the Lenten Fish Frys. He also helped work at Prince of Peace when his job permitted at the fish fry. Mike and his cook team create the menu and prepare the dinners for the Council meetings. He helps with the Veterans Appreciation Dinner and typically works on the team. This past year he was going to be out of town but prepared a summary of the items that needed to be purchased to prepare the dinner. When Council 8482 is the host Council for the Fourth Degree dinner, Mike is usually the one to or-ganize the cook team. Mike is also an usher at the 9:00 am Mass Thank you Mike for all your efforts on behalf Council 8482.

Family of the Month - July 2019 Manny & Elisa Soto

Manny and Elisa are both ac-tive at Prince of Peace serving in various ministries. Manny serves as Sacristan, MC and Acolyte. Eli-sa serves as an MC. She also at-tends adoration regularly. Both Manny and Elisa serve as EMHCs. In the past they hosted the Council’s rosary at Prince of Peace on the first Tuesday of the month. Manny is a past Membership Director. He is has been the chairman of the Freethrow Contest for many years. Thank you Manny and Elisa for being an exam-ple of a Catholic family’s commitment to your faith and the practice of that faith.

Knight of the Month - August 2019 Hugh McCrea

Hugh has been the Council’s treasure since 2014 and for as long as I have been a member of the Council. In addition to this, Hugh did a fantastic job of putting together the RSVP package this past June. He also organized help to move Fr. Gerald’s paintings from San Juan Diego to Prince of Peace. He developed the income and expenses ledger for Casino Night. He is active in Prince of Peace ministries including being an Usher at the 10:45 am Mass and is a Prince of Peace money counter. He is active in the Mercy Ministries by being co-chair of the Thanksgiving Loaves & Fishes Program and has been on the Christmas Adopt-A-Family committee for 20 years.

Family of the Month - August 2019 John & Millie Laube

John and Millie are long time parishioners of Prince of Peace and actively involved in support of the ministries there. John has been the Council 8482’s liaison for the “adopt a family” program each year. John has ensured that we adopt the larger families to make sure that all in the family will have a great Christmas. Through his leadership he has always exceeded the fund raising

goal. Millie was always advising and helping him in this success. Both John and Millie are Lectors and EMHCs.

Grand Knight’s Message (Continued from Page 1)

On August 5th we held our monthly business meeting at Prince of Peace. Mike Brzezniak’s cook team prepared our meal and we had cake left over from Paul’s celebration. We were blessed to have Father Gerald, Father Biju and Deacon Bill Barnes in attendance. The meeting was well attended and many returning faces were seen. Our next busi-ness meeting on the Prince of Peace campus will be Tuesday November 5, 2019. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm and the meeting will start at 7:00 pm. FS Larry Hogan conducted the blood drive for Prince of Peace this past month. The drive was a success and in the future I encourage everyone who can, to donate blood. A big thank you goes out to Harold Hart who has been present to greet the men of the parish at the Knights of Columbus table in the Community Center on Fellowship Sondays. I want to thank Tim Freed who helped spread the Knight’s message after the 7:30 am and 9:00 am Masses. I also want to thank all those brothers who help at the later Masses. I ask that all brothers participate in our recruiting efforts after the Mass you attend on Welcoming Sonday. Take the family over to the Community Center and have them enjoy the donuts and coffee or a hot meal while you share the Knights of Columbus story with men of Prince of Peace. We had a bit of a mix-up on Fellowship Sonday August 4th. The Knights of Columbus was the host ministry but we didn’t know until a little after 7:00 am on that day. I want to thank Bob Chaya, Manny Soto and Fernando Flores for helping keep the coffee urns full and hot. It was a challenging day to say the least. We have two more Fellowship Sondays to host and will serve our famous pancakes (cooked by master chef Jim Vossler). Please watch the Knightbeat for the next cooking Sonday and come join in the fun. Sammy Sedita, as always, did a great job organizing and selling tamales in August. Sammy is winding down his tenure as the chairman and will transfer his duties to a new chairman this coming January. I ask that you all prayer-fully consider volunteering to help lead this extremely important committee. We have seven seminarians that we sup-port each month with a $100.00 stipend and we also award five $1,000.00 scholarships each year to graduating high school seniors in the parish. The tamale sales fund the $13,400 to support these very important programs. I want to thank all the tamale teams and those who help sell after each Mass on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Council 8482 is sponsoring a table at the St. Clare Monastery fundraiser which will be held on September 7th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. We have purchased ten dinners which are available to Council members. I encourage you and your wife to attend. Call me if you would like to reserve seating. The program last year was fantastic and you can expect the same again this year. Vivat Jesus!

LABOR DAY PRAYER

Joseph, by the work of your hands

and the sweat of your brow,

you supported Jesus and Mary,

and had the Son of God as your fellow worker.

Teach me to work as you did,

with patience and perseverance, for God and

for those whom God has given me to support.

Teach me to see in my fellow workers

the Christ who desires to be in them,

that I may always be charitable and forbearing

towards all.

Grant me to look upon work

with the eyes of faith,

so that I shall recognize in it

my share in God’s own creative activity

and in Christ’s work of our redemption,

and so take pride in it.

When it is pleasant and productive,

remind me to give thanks to God for it.

And when it is burdensome,

teach me to offer it to God,

in reparation for my sins

and the sins of the world.

From the Officers of the Galveston/Houston Chapter, we wish you and your families a Happy and Holy Labor Day.

Insurance Message September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. It’s the one month each year that the life insurance industry coordinates a campaign aimed at educating folks about the importance of life insurance and helping them get the coverage they need. I don’t want to bore you with lots of statistics, but a recent survey from LIMRA (Life Insurance Marketing Research Association) found that only 59% of Americans own life insurance and about half of

those are underinsured. So what does that have to do with the Knights? The historian, Christopher Kauffman, spent several years at the Supreme Office and at the Museum, researching the book that he wrote on the 100th anniversary of our founding. That book, Faith and Fraternalism, notes on page 13, “…he [Fr. McGivney] was deeply interested in pursuing the topic of a Catholic fraternal insurance society among groups of Catholic laymen of New Haven.” Then on page 35 Mr. Kauff-man goes on, “…he [Fr. McGivney again] spent his energy in promoting the insurance feature…his emphasis on busi-ness was his pastoral concern for the social and financial security of the family.” Fr. McGivney lived both the social and the financial insecurity of a desperate family, with the breadwinner sud-denly taken, that had to be supported. He left the seminary to work and support his mother and siblings. He didn’t want other Catholic families to find themselves in such a predicament. That, and uniting men of faith, was the impetus for establishing our Order. Everyone who joined in those first years was insured; that was part and parcel of being in the organization. Now every member has a choice and every member should know what we do, and how we do it. Here’s the process I use when I meet with families:

1. Discover – Identify & prioritize your financial goals 2. Gather Data – Collect facts & figures based on your current situation 3. Analyze – Input data, run calculations, identify shortfalls 4. Recommend – Propose a financial strategy designed to satisfy your goals 5. Implement – Choose a financial strategy and implement 6. Periodic Review – Review regularly, measure success, make adjustments

As you can tell, this is a painless process. But it can help any family, at any age, determine if they have blind spots in their coverage. It can help you avoid the pain of being underinsured. With a variety of life insurance products we offer we can help just about any person within any budget. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to buy life insurance…I want to buy what life insurance provides: no change in lifestyle for the survivors…in the house where they want to be. It’ll pay for a daughter’s wedding, a child’s college education and much more. What does life insurance provide? Peace of mind, security, freedom from anxiety, a safeguard from the unknown. Vivat Jesus!

I look forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your family’s needs. Kevin Anglin 281-931-9100 [email protected]

Thank you to all our Brother Knights who spent time after the Masses on August 17-18, 2019 to help make our tamale sales the biggest fundraiser of our Council. The sale of tamales helps fund our scholarship pro-gram and our monthly support of 7 seminarians. We sold 40 dozen beef, 65 dozen chicken, 110 dozen pork and 75 dozen hot pork. Our next selling dates will be September 14-15, 2019. Please go to the Sign-Up Genius on the Council website to volunteer to cover a door after each Mass on Saturday evening and Sunday.

Msgr. William D. Steele Assembly #2033 Fourth Degree

Sir Knights, please be prepared to turn out in new uniform October 5— Fourth Degree Exemplification, Sugar Land, Texas. St. Theresa Catholic Church. If you are a Third Degree Knight and need registration information, contact SK Henry DeSalvo at 832-443-4078 or [email protected] ************************************************************************************************* The following information was provided by SK Kenneth Oradiegwu, Master of the First District Worthy Sir Knights, At this year's Provincial meeting that concluded yesterday, 8/25/19 in Colleyville, Texas, we received further clarification on wearing the so-called "social" attire. When wearing the "social" attire, you can dress as follows - Dark suit with plain shirt, straight or buttoned down collar, PG-113 or combination pin (4th Degree pin with US flag on top), black shoes, black belt, subdued color tie and a social baldric. If wearing a black tuxedo, you may choose a plain or pleated shirt with or without cuffed sleeves. The shirt also could have straight or buttoned-down collar (wing type collar not permitted), bow or long neck tie, PG-113 or combination pin (4th Degree pin with US flag on top), black shoes and a social baldric. With regards to the official Uniform of the Fourth Degree, the requirements did not change. Please note that only the PG-113 pin is permitted on the lapel. In addition, we are not permitted to wear a name tag on the uniform blazer whether in full gear or when dressed down. When at a wake/visitation, you cannot post by the casket unless dressed in full uniform. However, you are free to attend the wake in street clothes, Council or Assembly shirt, participate in the Rosary, approach the fallen brother to pay your respect, etc. You also cannot be part of the honor guard when the casket is being removed from the hearse unless dressed in full uniform. I hope that you will find these new guidelines helpful while contemplating purchasing your uniform and begin participating in the honor guard activities Please let me know if you have any questions. Vivat Jesus! Kenneth Oradiegwu District Master [email protected]

LADIES: Please join us for Spiritual Growth and Education! We begin our new year in September, and we are looking forward to a year filled with activities. We are planning a New Year’s Eve celebration and a Mardi Gras party with the Knights; another area-wide program on sex trafficking (yes, it is happening right in our midst); bake sales to sup-port our programs; we need a newsletter editor; the CDA National Con-vention will be in Dallas in July 2020. As you can see, we have something for everyone. Catholic Daughters is a great opportunity to meet other la-dies in your Parish and find places where you can offer your talents and make a difference in people’s lives. Catholic Daughters of the Americas is the largest organization for Catholic women in the Americas and there is a very active, growing Court at Prince of Peace. Court of the Holy Family #2597 invites you to learn about an outstanding opportunity to foster community with other Catholic women at Prince of Peace. We offer consistent opportunities to serve oth-ers on a national, state, and local level and to nurture your spiritual life. And, we do all of that while developing close friendships and having fun with one another! We invite you to join us! All women over the age of 18 are encouraged to consider membership in Court of the Holy Family. Our next meeting will be September 18th at 6:30 PM in room #114 of the St. Joseph Center at Prince of Peace. We will start gathering for fellowship and snacks at 6:30 pm with the meeting starting promptly at 6:45 pm. You are invited to join us to learn more about CDA and meet the members. In Memorium—Mary Diane Gray Diane Gray, age 83, joined her heavenly reward on Sunday, August 11, 2019. She was born June 16, 1936 in Long Beach, California to Claude E. Wilson and Marie Fran-cis Wilson. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years John Michael Gray, her five children Anthony Michael Gray, Carrie Anne Gray Mays, Colleen Gray Dudley, Brian Patrick Gray, Sheila Marie Gray Hall and their respective spouses. It was at Jordan High where she met her husband Mike. After a two-year stint in the Army, Mike returned to Long Beach to marry Diane. They remained in California until Mike’s job transferred them to Houston in 1974, where they joined Prince of Peace Catholic Community and have remained parishioners for 45 years. During that time Diane was a member of the Pastoral Council, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of the Holy Family, and an active member and leader of the women's ACTS and WITS retreat groups. She played on the Prestonwood Forest women’s tennis team and was active in the Prestonwood Forest Civic Association.
