I am pleased to inform you that on July 30, the President signed a bill titled the
Legion Act (Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service
Act). What this means for us is that instead of having seven different time criteria to be eligible for membership in the American Legion we now have basically two: April 6,
1917, to Nov. 11, 1918, and Dec. 7, 1941 to a time later determined by the federal gov-
ernment. The Legion Act has the potential of opening the American Legion to approxi-
mately 6 million veterans nationally that was not eligible for membership before.
Between the 27th and 30th of July a group representing each of our families went of Fort Knox to help send off 40 soldiers from HRSC and again to welcome 140 soldiers
from the 42d Clearance Company of the 19th Engineer Battalion back from Afghani-
stan. We passed out drinks and snacks to each group, it was a very rewarding experi-
ence for all of us. If you would like to be included in our next sendoff/welcome let our
post manager Steve Stewart know, and he will put your name on a call list. As a reminder, we will have a Craft Bazaar in conjunction with our breakfast on
September 14th, we will also have a dance that night with an awesome band, “Bar
Nuns”! If you have your 2020 membership card, admittance will be free.
Remember, our general membership meetings are held on the First Thursday of
each month. I hope to see you there!

Can you believe that Labor Day is upon us and summer is coming to its unofficial end? I hope everyone
enjoyed the last long weekend of summer. We know that Fall is upon us as Pumpkin Spice coffee is back on the
menu and the craft bazaars are beginning!
Speaking of craft bazaars, come out for breakfast on Saturday, the 14th, and then shop at the many crafts
booths set-up in the big hall to get a jump start on your Christmas shopping or just purchase something amaz-
ing for yourself! The Craft Bazaar is the annual fundraiser for our Veterans Administration and Rehabilitation
(VA&R) Program benefiting our veterans. Bring your appetite for a great all-you-can-eat breakfast and your
purse to help make this worthy cause a big success!!
Thanks to everyone who brought in school supplies or gave a donation to that worthy cause. A big thank
-you to Donna Thurman, Education Chairperson, for delivering the supplies and donation checks to the local
school districts. Please continue to bring in the Box Top$ for Education which also helps our local schools.
A big thank-you to Patty Heath, for not only chairing and setting up the craft bazaar, but for baking all
the cookies and other goodies in support of the M.O.D. Squad Teen Camp, which is a mentoring program for
teens.
It’s that time of year to renew your membership. We had a successful membership drive at the August
breakfast with 38 senior renewals, 5 new senior memberships, 1 new and 3 renewals for our juniors; along with
3 – 75+10 renewals. As an incentive to join or renew now, we are offering an Early Bird Special which gets you
$1.00 off the cost of breakfast each month through July 2020. This is for the Auxiliary member only and you
must show your 2020 membership card with the Early Bird stamp on it.

The Riders had a wonderful month of events in July and August. We rode to Camp Breckenridge German Prisoner of War (POW) camp and received a guided tour of the museum and NCO Club, where prison-ers painted murals on the walls from postcards they received from home and they very nice works of art. Not on-ly was this a POW Camp but also the 101st Airborne Division called this home until they were moved to Fort Campbell where they currently reside. The museum has many unique uniforms and artifacts up to and including the Vietnam War. ALR Riders welcomed home the 42nd Engineer Company from their recent deployment to Af-ghanistan, with snacks and drinks at Sadowski Fieldhouse for the families waiting to welcome them home. On August 10th, the Riders visited the Lady Veterans Homeless Facility in Winchester, KY, and toured the facility. This is a school house that has been renovated so homeless female veterans have a place to stay while getting back on their feet. Phyllis Abbott started this program in 2012 and it has finally come together from donations Ken-tucky organizations have sent to make this a reality. On 12 August, at the Robinbrooke Assisted Living complex, the ALR had the honor to conduct an American and POW-MIA flag retirement ceremony and raise new flags in their place. The residents came out in force to watch and participate in this event. The ALR has been invited to their Hawaiian Luau on 20 September so hope to see many of our riders stop by and say hello and listen to some interesting stories from people who also happen to be Veterans. A very nice thank you to Don and Allegra for their hospitality and hosting a cookout, and tables of food, at their home for the riders. It was a night of camara-derie, friendship and stories and Don has said we need to do another one in the future. ALR Post 113 supported the Flatwoods Veterans ride to support the Veterans around the Flatwoods and Ashland areas. The ride-planning meeting was held 22 August and the next 3 months of rides have been planned and scheduled. There are some very interesting rides next quarter where some are overnighters and involve some good miles of riding. August 31 – 2 September is the Wheels Through Time ride to Maggie Valley, N.C; September 6 – 8 will be a ride to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA. The ride calendar will be posted on Facebook and e-mail on 23 August.

Hope – Homes – Healing: How You Can Help Lady Veterans Connect Save Lives By: Robin Boggs, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 113
Remember when you needed a helping hand? Whether it was a place to stay, a hot meal, or a kind heart?
We’ve all been there at some point in our lives. Lady Veterans Connect (LVC) is asking you to be that safe place – or at least help build one. This summer the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation funded an $8,000 grant to create a shelter for homeless female veterans. The shelter, the former Trapp Elementary School near Winchester, Ky., is under renovation and will lodge up to 35 women veterans and their families. The organization’s founder, Phyllis Abbott, grew LVC out of another non-profit for veterans after realiz-ing there was a strong need for helping women vets. “I saw there was nothing there for women veterans, and they’re 15% of the military,” she said. Some women vets are challenged in managing life skills, like budgeting for rent and utilities, along with handling stressors following military service. Coupled with limited incomes upon leaving service, some women vets are not able to properly manage the day-to-day requirements of maintaining a home and raising a family. That’s where you and Lady Veterans Connect comes in. LVC delivers high-quality, comprehensive services, like housing, life skills, career readiness, financial liter-acy, and holistic healing, to lend transitional support and prevent homelessness. Coincidentally, you may be able to offer support in many of the services and resources they need to put female veterans and their families back in the game. “Whether it’s money or pro bono services you can offer, our women vets deserve assistance to kick-start their lives,” said Diane Kennedy of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 113. ALA Unit 113 added $2,000 to the Trapp school renovations and have adopted supporting the cause as a priority. “The Auxiliary advocates for all veterans, and we work to educate American citizens, mentor today’s youth, and promote patriotism and good citizenship,” said Kennedy. “Giving back to women veterans through Lady Veterans Connect is one simple way to enhance the lives of those who’ve served and made sacrifices in defense of our nation.” Donate online at https://www.lv-connect.org/ or contributions can be sent to:

Put any worry you have on “My to do List”. Let me take care of it for you! Trust me! Leave it alone and don’t pick up my responsibility as your own again. I love you to talk to me and have faith in what I will do for you! Share...your joy and with those less fortunate. Let’s now look at #8:
#8: Be patient. I managed to fix it so in just one life time you could have so many different experiences.
You grew from a child to an adult, loved children, changed jobs, learned new trades, traveled to many places, met hundreds of people and experienced so much. How can you be so impatient then when you think it takes Me a little longer than you expected to handle something on My to-do-list?! Be patient! Wait on Me. Trust in my tim-ing, for My timing is perfect. You may think I am slow, but remember….I am never late. I have your best inter-est in mind and know when time is just right. Psalm 27:14; Wait on Me, remain strong and take heart, and wait for Me.

7:00pm. The SAL is providing pork tenderloin for the main entrée; so, if possible, please bring in a dish to com-
