Print EcologyTheme of FAPGA 2015

Print Ecology is a management imperative to make print businesses more responsive, effective, and sustainable and secure in a complex, networked world. Organizations, both print and otherwise, in which all aspects of management, operations and process interact and interrelate, and which operate within a dynamic business ecosystem.

In a world where out-sourcing is fundamental to a company’s growth without having to physically scale up, the printing industry now finds itself the printing industry now finds itself a vital part of the business ecology to provide communication and branding.

Print Ecology is an economic community supported by a foundation of interacting organizations and individuals of the business and printing industry. The economic community produces goods and services of value to customers, who are themselves members of the ecosystem. The member organisms also include suppliers, lead producers, competitors, and other stakeholders. Over time, they co-evolve their capabilities and roles, and tend to align themselves with the directions set by one or more central companies.

India Day Celebrated at Shanghai

All India Federation of Master Printers’ (AIFMP) celebrated India Day on 16th of November, 2014 during All in Print China at Shanghai. Perhaps it is for the first time ever in China that a procession in open was organized by the printers with tricolours in hand to celebrate India Day

and to show solidarity with Chinese printing and packaging industry.

Welcoming the Indian leaders, Ms. Yvonne Lam, Messe Dusseldorf China Ltd., said it is an proudest moment for us to welcome Indian Print Leaders and Dy CGI on this occasion. It is for the first time ever that a delegation of

apex body of 250,000 printers is visiting All in Print China this visit may pave a way in the development of printing and packaging industry of both the countries. Bouquets were presented to Mr. A K Sinha, Director Printing Government of India, H.E. Shri Mahavir P. Bhardwaj, Dy CGI, Mr. Dev Nair, President AIFMP, Mr. Rajendra Jain, Vice-President (W) and Mr. Kamal Chopra, Chairman Intl. Relations, AIFMP jointly by Ms. Chen Yan, China Printing Academy; Mr. Zhang Shuang Ru, Printing Technology Association of

China and Prof. (Dr.) Qu Desen, Deputy Director and Secretary-General of Chinese Printing Technology Association.

Introducing the importance of the event, Mr. Kamal Chopra, Chairman International Relations, AIFMP said, today, (16th November) is an important day, on this day in 1945 UNESCO was founded and the day is also observed as the International Day of Tolerance. 1st edition

of New York Evening Post was also published on this day in 1801. Today we are here to create another milestone, by celebrating India day during All in Print China at Shanghai on this 16th day of November 2014 for the first time ever. Today 16th November, is going to be the appropriate occasion to open joint ventures and policy promotions by the Printing Entrepreneurs of both the countries.

13

The celebrations started with National Anthems of China and India at the meeting room N2-M42, Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC). Introducing Indian Printing Industry, Mr. Kamal Chopra said, Introducing Indian printing industry, I would like to mention that India with 250 thousand printing companies is number one in the world and with 2.5 million workforces it is second only to China. Printing in India is growing at 18% and people are taking keen interest in this key industry now. There are more than 36 printing institutes some of these giving even post-graduate education. Every year more than 3500 new printing engineering graduates joins this industry, while still much more get on the spot training in the print shops. Printing especially Packaging printing is now one of the fastest growing sectors in India. In India we have more than 760 manufacturer engaged in the manufacturing of Printing and Allied Machineries, India is almost self sufficient in the post press machinery. Some of the manufacturers have collaborations with reputed international companies including China. Introducing AIFMP, Mr Chopra said, we do have an apex body of Indian printers – All India Federation of Master Printers which is the largest printers association of the world.

In his speech, Mr. Dev Nair, President AIFMP said, what a wonderful day this is! A day to recall our progress; a time to collectively assess future growth possibilities, an occasion to celebrate our achievements! Today, on behalf of the All India Federation of Master Printers, I would like to put forth to my Chinese fellow printers ‘The Power of Unity’. He said, the Indian Print and Packaging business has undergone a 360 degree transformation in the last 15 years. Since 1990, the country initiated a process of reforms aimed at liberalization of the economy. Privatization was initiated and encouraged with the objective to integrate the Indian economy with the world economy. This in turn, ushered in new avenues for our country’s CMYK industry to modernize by investing in the technologies of the future.

Elaborating details of the Indian printing industry, Mr. Nair said, currently, over 90,000 titles are published in India, each year. Of these, about 50% are in Hindi and English, languages. The rest are spread across 24 officially recognised as well as a few other regional languages. As per the FICCI’s estimates, the value of the Indian book market has reached a good Rs 12,000 Crore mark. India is the 6th largest book publisher with the 3rd largest English language books’ market in the world, after the US and the UK.

He said, the packaging business alone accounts for over $ 24.6 billion and 22,000 firms that include raw material manufacturers, machinery suppliers and ancillary materials. Of these, 85% of the units are MSMEs. Today, our country is the 6th largest packaging market worldwide. It is expected to grow at 12.3% CAGR in the next 4-5 years to become the fourth largest global market, with a sales of approximately $42.7 billlion. Across other areas, print packaging forecasts average 8.0% growth in foil packaging, 7.4% growth for paper packaging, 6.2% growth in metal packaging sales, 8.3% growth for glass, and 3.9% growth across other packaging sales, between 2011 and 2016.

On the other hand, Mr. Nair said, the Chinese print fraternity serves as a fantastic example of growth and progress

14

attained by an emphasis on modern technology and printer-friendly Government policies. Statistics reveal that there are 1,02,000 plus printing enterprises in China with over 3.5 million employees. Of these, 47,000 focus on packaging, 6,800 focuses on publication printing and 48,000 focuses on other printing markets... WOW! Of course, China’s exports of printing machinery to the West can reach the high numbers it so desires by strengthening its distribution network and service facilities, worldwide. My suggestion is, why not scale up the domestic suppliers? This could be done by joining hands with the Indian print and packaging industry, on the whole, for diverse facets like print technologies, marketing support and more. On the other hand, it would also help the Indian printers to spread their wings to international horizons. I eagerly wait the day when my Indian printers will say “NIHAO” instead of Namaste, concluding his speech Mr. Nair said.

Speaking on the occasion H.E. Shri Mahavir P. Bhardwaj, Dy Consul General of India at Shanghai said, India and China are two great civilizations, neighbours and among the largest economies in the world. Economic cooperation between the two countries has seen a remarkable upswing in the last decade. From very modest beginnings, China has become India’s largest trade partner and India is China’s seventh largest export destination. Bilateral trade last year was USD 67 billion and is steadily growing. The relations are now maturing, moving from trade to investments. There are more than 150 large Indian companies having their presence in China. A number of top Chinese companies have already set up their units in India.

There is tremendous scope for cooperation between the two countries and we need to seek more avenues for increasing bilateral commercial engagement. Printing sector is surely one of the potential sectors.

China with the second highest total output of printing industry in the world which is expected to be RMB 1.1 trillion by the end of the 12th plan period and an out of RMB 40 billion of the printing machinery industry, is the largest publisher of books/newspapers and is the second largest in the electronic publication in the world. There is a two-way flow between India and China in this sector, marked by good synergy and potential for further cooperation, including mutual investments. The India day celebrations today would further strengthen cooperation between Indian and Chinese companies in the sector through B2B meetings between Chinese machinery manufacturers and suppliers of various international brands and Indian printers to exchange expertise and seek more avenues of cooperation. It is expected to enhance bilateral trade and investment in printing and allied sectors and help in technological collaboration to bring about greater value-add in the Indian printing industry.

H.E. Shri Mahavir P Bhardwaj extended the necessary help and support to the Indian and Chinese companies in their endeavours for further strengthening the ties of business and industry between two countries.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Q D Sen said, India is a large country and progressing well in the field of printing, we are glad to welcome the representatives of world’s largest printers associations and would like to further strengthen our ties in the field of print education. Ms. Chen Yan, China Print Academy said, we wish to establish long term relations with AIFMP, she promised for the whole heartedly participation in the PAMEX and promised to bring as many manufacturers as possible. She said we would like to create a separate approx. 1000 sq. m. pavilion for Chinese manufacturers during next PAMEX at Mumbai. She said, while visiting India in the month of February for the Romancing Print, we will further negotiate and sign the cooperation agreement on these lines.

15

Giving vote of thanks Mr. A K Sinha, Director Printing, Government of India said, it is my first visit to China and first as one of the delegate of AIFMP, I learnt a lot from this visit and would like to thank AIFMP for organizing such visits for the overall growth and benefit of the trade and industry. He thanked the Messe Dusseldorf Shanghai Co. Ltd., for taking pains in organizing India Day at Shanghai. He thanked HE Shri Mahavir P Bhardwaj for gracing the occasion taking time out of his very busy schedule. Mr. Sinha thanked the participants and delegates for being part of India Day.

Mementoes were presented on the behalf of AIFMP to H.E. Shri Mahavir P. Bhardwaj; Mr. A K Sinha; Prof. (Dr.) Q D Sen; Ms. Chen Yan; Mr. Zhang Shuang Ru; Ms. Liang Xin; Ms. Yvonne Lam and Ms. Nichole Kong. Appreciating the services of U Tourizmo, Mr. Kunal Sood and Mr. Sumit Berry were also felicitated.vv

Activities Designed to Uplift the Philippine Printing Industry

Amidst the difficulty of unification among the associations under Philippine present day-setting, allow me to make a summary of the positive activities of the Philippine Printing Technical Foundation starting June 25,2014todate:

A. On June 25, 2014 the PPTF initiated the roadmap study of the printing industry with the help of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), University of the Philippines Institute for Small Scale Industries (UPISSI) and Technical Educational and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Small Enterprises Research and Development Foundation (SERDEF);

A.1 On August 1, 2014 PPTF was similarly invited on the deliberation of another roadmap but thereafter the plan to share with one another did not materialize which again puts a roadblock for unification

17

A.2 On October 20, 2014 PPTF sent legislative proposal entitled “ Professionalizing the Printing Industry and Establishment of the Modernized Printing Schools in the NCR, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao which was accepted by the Senate through Senator FrancisEscudero and the House through Congressman Eric Singson;

A.3 PPTF was able to cause the reregistration of the Printing Industry Board Foundation Incorporated or PIBFI dated May 26, 2014 whose objective is to have “an aggrupation of print, graphic arts and industry-related associations under an umbrella organization to serve as the spokesman of the industry not only within the confines of the Archipelago but also in the regional community(consistent with the ASEAN Integrated

Community ) and also in the international community for the primordial goal of uplifting the printing and graphic arts industry locally, regionally and internationally”;

A.3.1 Presently the PIBFI is comprised of the following member associations:

A.3.2. Philippine Printing Technical Foundation or PPTF;

18

A.3.3 Association of Lawbook Writers of the Philippines or ALBOP;

A.3.4Screen Imaging and Digital Graphic Association of the Philippines (SIDGAP);

A.3.5 Association of Paper Traders Association or APTA:

A.3.6. Filipino Chinese Printing Association or FILCHI;

A.3.7.Printing industries Association of the Philippines used to have representations during the PIAP incumbency of PP Tansipek and PP Sy;

A.4 During the recent PIBFI meeting dated March 4, 2015 at Timberland Heights San Mateo, Rizal, we have listed down the other associations which we would be inviting to form part of PIBFI.

A.5.1ASEAN Print is comprised of representations from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and Myanmar;

A.5The PPTF under your humble representation was likewise elected as the ASEAN Print Ad Interim President and that PPTF with the endorsement of PIBFI would be holding the Second (2nd) Asean Training Program, Organizational Meeting, Country Reports, Resolutions and Strategic Planning this coming June 20 to 23, 2015 at the Sequoia Hotel;

19

A.6 PPTF with the support of the member associations of PIBFI shall be holding the Printech 2015 inSeptember, 2015 at World Trade Center;

A.7 During the occasion of my birthday March 13,2015 PIBFI Chairman Emeritus James Chiu submitted the completed manuscript of the book entitled “History of Printing in the Philippines”;

A.7.1 It is an attempt likewise to diagnose the flaws of the local printing industry.

A.8 PPTFdue to its “credible leadership”was chosen as the private sector representative observer by Apo-Neda in awarding bidding of security printing jobs.

A.9 PPTF through PE Brizuela and Pres. Buhain converted FAPGA from a sedentary body into a proactive body through the approval of the proposed FAPGA Constitution and By Laws based on the draft presented by the Philippines through PPTF last 2008 and which was finalized on November 13, 2014;

A.10Recently PPTF has interaction with TESDA for the purpose of seeking accreditation from the latter to be authorized to issue certification of competency after undergoing a particular training course;

20

A.10.1 Should that scenario take place PIBFI the umbrella body would corroborate with PPTF in training the trainors;

A.10.2 It is short of saying that PIBFI would be the coordinating body with PPTF as the training center;

A.11 Last April 26, 2015 the Printing Industries Association of Davao, Inc. (PIADI) Multipurpose Cooperative in the presence of Cebu Organization of Printing Industries, Inc. ( COPI ) invited PPTF to be the Guest of Honor and Speaker during its 2015 Annual Election of Directors and Officers during their Luncheon Fellowship Meeting at Marco Polo Hotel, Davao City where they gave support to the initiatives of PPTF;

A.11.1 It was also an opportune time for PPTF Past President Boy Kitane to give lecture on the training programs being pursued by PPTF;

A.11.2It was unearthed from the historical narration of PIADI Chairman Lads Aviola that the Cooperative started with a capital of Eighty One Thousand Pesos (P 81,000.00) but now it has gone up to Eighty One Million Pesos (P 81,000,000.00) through sound managerial practices and transparency.

Thank you very much.
