ASA President Report Last month I invited all of our members to share with us an interesting story of their life that we could post on the Web Site. It could be from the past or something that happened recently. It could be funny, sad, inspirational or maybe just an interesting anecdote. Well, I guess everyone is kinda shy as no one has sent anything, so I have decided to lead by example. I’m going to share a little story that occurred this summer. My wife Linda and I have a cottage in Haliburton on Little Redstone Lake. Like most dedicated cottagers we love the wildlife, especially the Loons. However, in all our time spent on the lake [33 years], we have never seen a Loon nesting. Until now, that is. Earlier this summer on a cruise around the Lake I steered into one of the quieter little bays when suddenly we spotted a female loon sitting on her nest! We didn’t want to get too close for fear of disturbing her, but we could clearly see that she was nesting. At the sound of another Loon calling we made a hasty retreat assuming it was dad warning us off. The Loon is monogamous and they raise their offspring together. Admittedly, we went by a couple of times more in the ensuing weeks and were pleased to see her always there on the nest, until one day she wasn’t there. We waited anxiously hoping all was well and that she had successfully hatched one or two babies. We were beginning to fear the worst when, during another cruise, there she was swimming in the water with her baby on her back. Over the next few weeks we watched the baby grow and even start diving, always staying very close to mom. When we got a little too close, the baby Loon started posturing, holding his chest out of the water and flapping his wings to frighten us off. I say “he” because Linda says it would have to be a guy to already be trying to act tough. He needn’t have bothered as we soon heard dad and he was most defiantly telling us to “take off”! Happily we have seen the little family several more times since and the little guy is growing well and venturing a little farther away from his mother. It will be sad when they leave in the autumn, but we are comforted by the knowledge that although they will part for the winter, if all goes well they will return to their lake next spring to reunite. Although the Loon is not so far up on the endangered species list we definitely see less of them than we used to, so this little family gives us hope. If you have enjoyed this little tale why not share a story of your own.. Just leave it at the reception desk. On a different note, I have three announcements. Starting this September our Board meetings will be moving to the Town Hall in the Leksand Room beginning at 1 p.m. We encourage you to come and observe the meetings. Due to the many concerns about the temperature in the ASC it has been decided to keep the facility at a constant temperature of 70 degrees in the West McKenzie Room and at 72 degrees in the rest of the building. Knowing what the temperature will be, you will be able to dress for your own comfort level. Also when you are at the reception desk, check out the new security camera and see yourself on the monitor. Dave LeGallais, ASA President

Ladies Billiards! Would you like to meet other ladies and learn to play Billiards? Join us in the Billiards room on

Woodworking Carving Group The Woodworking Carvers Group meets at the workshop on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at the Aurora Senior Center workshop from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Group operates like a drop in Centre for members of the Aurora Senior Association. The workshop space is limited so there is only room for up to nine carvers, based on a first come basis.

New members are welcome, but must be members of the Seniors Association. We advise new members that there are some minor conditions required to work in the workshop, so it is advisable to drop in on Tuesdays or Thursdays to discuss these conditions with us. Each member works on their own projects and enjoys working with other carvers and sharing ideas. The sessions are not set up to provide training for new members who do not have some experience with working with wood. The existing members are prepared to advise and provide some help, but they do have their own projects that they are working on.

We are prepared to provide training for a limited number of members who wish to learn how to carve. The workshop will be open on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the month of September. The carvers group will have some experienced carvers available to teach and supervise during these sessions. The Centre will provide some basic tools and wood for the training projects. Each member will have to provide a safety glove.

Members who are interested in joining the training sessions should sign up at Reception at the Centre and talk to one of the carvers for more information. Please visit us on Tuesday mornings as there may not be someone available on Thursdays during August.

Knotty Knitters A warm welcome to the Knotty Knitters. We are at the Centre from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Mondays throughout the year. We will always welcome new knitters. To all our Friends who have donated yarn, thank you. Also thanks to all our knitters for their hard work. It is really appreciated. Some of our oh-so-talented knitters are away at their Summer homes, but they are still knitting. We will see the results of their continued hard work when they get back in the Fall. Have a look at our show case then. If anybody is interested we have yarn available for knitting for the Centre. Please just ask us. The hugs and smiles are always free and lasting friendships are formed. So feel free to stop in and stay for a look and a chat. We love to talk!! If you see something one of the Knotty Knitters has made that you would like to buy in the display case to the left side of the front door, please enquire at Reception. All proceeds go back into the Centre. If you wish to join us, please do so as beginners are more than welcome. Remember, we are not strangers, only friends you have not met yet.
