From the Interim Pastor’s Desk—

The third week of June, I attended the Interim Ministry Network Annual Conference, which includes several workshops and speakers. Of course, the topics always have something to do with the time of transition. I’d like to share some notes from one of the presentations. The speaker discussed some of the questions (A) that commonly occur during interim time, and suggested alternative questions (B).

A. How do we bring people in? B. How do we send people out?

The first question comes from the perspective that the church has something people need and our responsibility is to figure out how to get them through the door. The second question is about sending out church members, into ministry in the world.

A. What should the pastor do? B. What is our congregation’s shared ministry?

The first question assumes that the pastor’s role is to take care of the members of the church. The second one focuses on everyone working together for the sake of others.

A. What is our vision? B. What is God up to and how do we get on board?

This is the difference between looking inward, so figure out what we want, and looking out to discern where God is at work and how we might participate.

A. How do we restructure so that we may survive? B. How do we serve?

Again, this pair of questions marks the difference between focus on ourselves and looking beyond our own walls to others.

A. What are we doing to save people? B. How do we reveal the reign of God?

This pair of questions reveal that the speaker is not from the Lutheran tradition since we don’t generally speak of “saving people”. But the perspective is that the church has something that people need. Perhaps Lutherans might say, “How do we get people to listen to our proclamation of the gospel?” The second question points out that God is not only in the churches, but is present in the world.

Notice that the (A) questions tend to be inwardly centered whereas the (B) questions move us out, into the world. Of course we know that God is not limited to our church building, but we often fall into the trap of defining “church” as this space or this group of people. But God’s church is the world, God’s ministry happens in every time and place. As we move into the next years, most theologians and church leaders agree that huge changes are ahead. But nobody knows what those changes will look like. What we do know is that God is at work in this world.

As we move through this transition time from one called pastor to the next, there are uncertainties. But God is at work. Consider the (B) questions. Look for the presence of God, in every time, in every place. Engage in the work of God. Be the church of God in the world.

WEDNESDAYS 4:00–6:00pm Beginning September 13, 2017

This faith-based grief recovery support group is open to anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one. The 13 week GRIEF SHARE program is designed to help participants process and heal the deep hurt of loss. Each session will utilize a video presentation, discussion, and workbook exercises. You are welcome to begin attending at any point. Each session is self contained so you do not have to attend in sequence. Fall 2017 Theology on Tap Schedule

We’re looking forward to another great year of Theology on Tap! Please join us for monthly fellowship and great conversation. We gather the fourth Thursday of most months (third Thursday in November because of Thanksgiving). Come to purchase dinner at 6 p.m., or join us for the more structured conversation from 7-8 p.m. All are welcome! Thanks again for a great first year – I can’t wait for September 28. – Laura Gifford (Questions? Email me at [email protected]; we’re also on Facebook.)

Thursday, September 28: Technology – Flying Pie Pizzeria (SE 78th and Stark) • Luther made great use of new technology – the printing press – to quickly print and share

short, pithy books and pamphlets accessible to the masses. (Thus, Lutherans are inherently cutting-edge.) Today we face a wide range of opportunities – and challenges – relating to technology. Is technology inherently good? How are we called to engage with technological change? How do we respond as technology increasingly intersects with our humanity, from artificial intelligence to bio-engineering? What is our responsibility as thoughtful Christians?

Thursday, October 26: Compassion – Flying Pie Pizzeria (SE 78th and Stark) • Compassion is a word that crops up frequently in the Bible. We know we are supposed to

cultivate compassion. Compassion in practice can be a struggle. How do we cope with “compassion fatigue”? Is there a difference between compassion and enabling unhealthy behaviors? How might we best promote compassion in our community?

Thursday, November 16: Native Americans and the Doctrine of Discovery – site TBA • Last year, the ELCA formally repudiated the Doctrine of Discovery, a colonial-era

philosophy that proclaimed any land not already owned by Christians to be free for the taking. This was, of course, a doctrine with harsh consequences for the Native people of the Americas. How might we as 21st century American Christians grapple with the legacy of how Christianity has intersected with empire? What does it mean to come to terms with the less savory aspects of our past? More optimistically, what gifts do Native peoples contribute to American Christianity?

JOY CIRCLE will begin again on Wednesday, September 20th @ 10:00am in the Luther Lodge

Study Leader: Yvonne Edman Hostess:  Jan Plog Devotions:  Jevein Kellams

The Topic this year will be on The Articles of the Creed.  The first lesson will be "I Believe in God".

If you have never come to a meeting, please join us.  All women are welcome. Come for Sharing, Fellowship and Goodies. We have some good discussions!

Thank You!

To our congregation, staff, lay preachers and visiting pastors for helping fill in and help where needed while Pr. Sue was healing from surgery, thank you for keeping her in your prayers and offering coverage and assistance as she healed.

The God’s Work, Our Hands planning team – Pr. Sue, Troy, Laura Gifford, Sara Ritchie and Cheryl Beam – for their efforts and time spent working with our fellow cluster churches to secure volunteer opportunities for Saturday, 9/9 and plan our combined worship at Centennial High School on 9/10 (potluck to follow)!.

Thank you Jerry Sharpe, Dennis Chapple and Richard Cairns for sharing their puppeteer skills at Resurrection and Gethesmane’s first joint VBS event and Judy Wheeler, Katy Tinker, Cheryl Beam, Jakob Mohr and Sue Hiersche for representing RLC and assisting the VBS team as needed.

Many, many thanks to everyone who filled out our Congregational Vitality Survey the last two weekends of July. The information gathered will be immensely helpful to both the Synod and our very own Transition Team and they sincerely appreciate the support!

Troy for all his hard work planning Family Camp at the Astoria/Warrenton KOA (and negotiating the pricing!) – while the weather was a little temperamental at times, the kids and adults seemed to have a wonderful time enjoying all the facility had to offer including two pools, hot tubs, bounce pad, play grounds, tractor rides, etc. as well as time as a group watching evening movies, breaking bread together at the Potluck and worship. Please keep this fun event in mind for next year, we would love to have you join us!

And thank you to Mike and Katherine Petke for leaving the Family Camp event a day early to help lead the early service on August 13th.

To My Brothers & Sisters at RLC; I extend my appreciation for all of the cards, calls and visits. We all work with the Lord. Your kindness and thoughtfulness means so much to me.

God’s blessings to you all; Betty Palmer

Chapel Wall Project Thank You Keith Kunerth!

Take a look in the chapel when you get a chance. You will notice there is a new section of “memorial wall”. It was recently completed by Keith Kunerth.

You may not know the chapel wall is not the first project Keith has tackled around RLC. Besides helping on several work day clean-ups and serving on the Community Ministry Team, Keith along with Norm Helberg designed and built the visitor desk in the fellowship hall a few years back. The visitor desk is unique as it can be moved around to different shapes to fit various spaces. It is very clever.

When the Chapel Wall Task force asked Keith to take on the Chapel Wall Memorial Wall project, there were no plans or details available. Keith had to design the wall to coordinate with the wall that was already in place. The existing memorial wall in the chapel area was started several years ago to provide a remembrance place for the names of RLC members who had passed on to live in eternity with our Heavenly Father. About 4 years ago, we ran out of wall space (on the current wall) so no memorial plaques were ordered or put up. This has now been updated with the current wall addition created and assembled by Keith.

The Memorial and Endowment Committee provides the funds for the printing of the plaques. This committee also contributed to the wall construction funds along with the majority of the funds coming from the Joy Circle. Thank you to both the Memorial and Endowment Committee and Joy Circle. Oh, and by the way, in his spare time, Keith works weekly at Habitat for Humanity projects around Portland. He is making good use of the talents God has given him. Thank you Keith!

The Chapel Wall Task Force, Kathy Ogard, Don Ogard, Annetta Anderson, Kathi Holmes, Mike Petke and Sue Hiersche

ESTATE PLANNING?

The Living Memorial and Endowment Committee will have a sign up sheet at the Ministry Fair for those interested in knowing more about Estate Planning. If there is enough that sign up the committee will organize a seminar possibly with an attorney. So please sign up!

The committee will be happy to provide this service to the congregation.

Your September Library Article……… A new, deeply moving book WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES by Georgia Hunter has recently been donated to Resurrection Library’s memorial section - Heroes of Faith. Ms. Hunter, the author, has based the is extraordinary story on her detailed research into the history of her own family of Polish Jews who were separated and caught up in the horrors of the Holocaust at the beginning of WWII. Georgia Hunter surprisingly was fifteen years old before she ever knew that she came from a family of Holocaust survivors and from that point she had a driving need to learn the details of their plights. She states in the acknowledgements that the book “began as a simple promise to record (her) family’s story” and over time the effort developed into a gripping epic story that describes the desperate experiences of Ms. Hunter’s great grandparents and her grandfather Addy and his four siblings as they fled in all directions from the increasing dangers that faced them. Against all odds, her family became :”the lucky ones” who survived and in time they established new and successful lives, scattered now throughout Brazil, the U. S. France, Switzerland, and Israel. Unlike so many of the tragic stories of this time period, this one “demonstrates how, in the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment, the human spirit can find a way to persevere and even triumph”. Our Library Committee highly suggests you take time to read this remarkable book.

Also check out the DVD section of your RLC Library for 6 new titles. More will be added soon!
