Summer Travels of Cameron 4-Hers

Another successful summer or 4-H in the books! We first

traveled to Baton Rouge for 4-H Day at the Capitol, where hundreds of 4-H members from across the state met on the steps of the State Capitol. We had a small group, but we toured a few

museums and had lunch on the Capitol grounds.

Next up was 4-H Camp, where to took 47 campers, 6 counselors, and 5 volunteers for a fun week at Camp Grant Walker! No rain

for the week meant it was hot, but we had a great week!

Two short weeks later, we headed to 4-H University in Baton Rouge. 32 participants with 6 chaperones competed in various

contests and came back with some blue ribbons and lots of

memories!

In July, our Junior Leaders went on their annual summer trip.

This year the group went to Branson, MO. We visited a theme park, explored a cave, raced go-karts, toured a university, and saw some great shows! Where will they go next year? Have to join

to find out…

To round out the summer, a few of our 7th and 8th graders attended LOST camp, the last big event before school started.

Camp was Sunday-Wednesday this year since many other schools started classes the next day. All good reports from our

campers and counselor!

After an eventful summer, we are ready to start a new school year with you! We have some exciting events planned and we

hope you are ready for a fun year in 4-H!

4-H University

June 21-24

32 Cameron 4-H members attended the annual 4-H University Competition on LSU Campus June 21-24. During the event, 4-H members participate in a contest of their choice, team or individual, to test their skills and knowledge in a specific project area. Laura McFatter, Morgan Quinn, and Kaycee Richard finished off their 4-H career by earning blue ribbons in The Next 4-H Food Star contest. Maeleigh Conner and Briley Richard continue to be an unstoppable duo who won the Louisiana Chef contest, and earned a trip to Tennessee in the end of July. Brooklyn Frerks ended her 4-H career with a 4th place in the Photography con-test. Malori Broussard, Kyrah Devall, and Adam McFatter placed 4th in Meat ID, while Kyrah earned 4th place overall individual. Drake Conner, Jobe Hebert, and Tyler LaBove earned a blue ribbon in The Fishing Sports competition. Gabby Talbot earned a blue ribbon in the Creative Choice contest in the Fashion Review. Garrett Nixon and Carissa Primeaux earned blue ribbons in the Computer Simulation contest. Seth Trahan and Austin Vincent placed 4th in the Agriculture Demo contest. That makes a total of 18 medals won by our delegates. We are extremely proud and thankful for everyone who helped in training and prepar-ing for contests. Also a special thanks to our adult volunteers Heather LeMaire, Heather Reeves, Jodie Doucet, Angie Theriot, Jill Thibodeaux, and Angelia Conner who attended 4-H University with our group. Best of luck to our seniors who graduated this year and we look forward to many of you returning and new faces in the future!

THE 4-H FOCUS SEPTEMBER 2016

The Junior Leader project allows 4-H members the opportunity to provide their Adult 4-H Volunteers with additional assistance in their 4-H Clubs and related activities. Jr. Leaders also serve as mentors and role mod-els to the younger 4-H members by sharing their experiences with them. Along with serving as leaders in our local 4-H clubs, you will serve as a leader in the community by volunteering for different service projects throughout the year. Junior Leaders also have the opportunity to serve as camp counselors at Summer Camp, Challenge Camp, and LOST Camp, all held at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, LA. Jr. Leaders host a number of fundraisers during the year to raise money to go on a rewards trip, typically during the summer. Past trips include Branson, MO, Galveston, TX, San Antonio, TX, Gatlinburg, TN, and Atlanta, GA. If you are

interested in joining Cameron Junior Leaders, please join us for our first meeting on September 17 at 12 PM following Beach Sweep at Rutherford Beach!

Beach Sweep 2016

The news is saturated with information on the devastating flood in south Louisiana. Though the news only gives the negative side I would like to share my positive experience. I was only six years old when Hurricane Rita destroyed my community but I remember seeing campers everywhere, living off of MRE’s, living with family members, and helping everyone out that we could. This is what gave me the passion to help the flood victims out. I spoke with my 4H agent and club advisors at school about putting together a donation drive for the flood victims. Then I spoke with all my friends I have met through 4H and most of them told me they had no idea how they were ever going to have a home again. This then gave me the idea to actually go and physically help individuals out with their homes. My 4H agent, Brittany Bourg, and I called around to find a place that needed our help; we found a church in Livingston Parish.

I then invited anyone from Cameron Parish who wanted to come and help out.

Seeing all the piles of debris on the side of the road brought hurt to my hurt. It made me feel so sad for all the people who didn’t know what they were going to do next with their life. When we made it to the house we were going help it, it bought warmth to my heart to see the smile on her face. After hours of tearing down walls, hauling trash to the road, and moving items it made me feel great to see the impact we as youth made on this lady. My favorite thing is being a teen and impacting someone’s life because many people believe we don’t have the self-motivation to do it. It makes me feel so great to know I made an impact on someone life that thought there wasn’t any hope.
