Remember when a seat belt was considered a momentous step toward passenger safety? Then the air bag

added another layer and today Ford is taking safety to a whole new level. Take for instance the 2011 Ford Explorer

The new Explorer will employ all of Ford’s standard safety features, as well as the latest and greatest innovations, including RSC, or Roll Stability Control which helps keep the Explorer from rolling over, while Curve Control keeps the vehicle moving in the intended direction.

Also, BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) and Cross Traffic Alert help in lane changes and parking lots, respectively. Adaptive Cruise Control helps keep your distance while on the highway. All of this has been developed for the sole purpose of keeping both driver and passengers safe.

While it may have a car-like ride on-road, and be based on car and crossover DNA, the new Explorer is sure to keep you safe when the going gets tough. The intelligent 4WD system allows drivers to go places others simply can’t – namely mud, sand and deeper snow.

A team led by Todd Brown of Ford Global Core Engineering, Brakes and Chassis Controls Department, developed the RSC system to reduce the occurrence of rollover accidents.

Typical electronic stability control systems are designed to control yaw or skidding only but by coupling the

RSC and AdvanceTrac® systems Ford is able to provide even greater safety benefits for the customer.

“Ford is bringing to market tomorrow’s safety technology today,” Brown explains. “We’re very pleased to offer our customers the benefits of this new RSC technology, but Ford won’t stop here. Where customer safety is concerned, our commitment is to continuously develop and implement innovative solutions.”

In Ford’s RSC system, a sensor is set to monitor the vehicle approximately 150 times per second. If the vehicle approaches an unstable situation, the vehicle’s RSC system is activated: engine power is reduced and/or the brakes are applied to one or more of the wheels as necessary to help regain vehicle stability.

Don’t let all of the technical talk overwhelm you. Just know that your safety is and always will be a top

priority to all of us at Stillwell Ford.. Happy Driving!

Dr. David D. Gossage’s unique approach to eye care involves close personal contact with patients at every phase of their eye care process. From the initial consultation through surgery and post operative care, he

believes in keeping patients informed about their treatment and progress. He specializes in in general ophthalmology such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, refractive surgery, diabetic eye care.

Dr. Mark E. Kosciuszko specializes in vision therapy, low vision evaluation, and contact lens fitting. He provides comprehensive eye care for the whole family

including glasses and contact lenses. He also provides medical treatment of eye diseases and injuries. He is regarded as an expert in fitting difficult contact lens patients.

Dr. Karen M. Luparello specializes in pediatric eye care and adult strabismus. Her expertise as a diagnostician and her concern for her patients’ well being, make her highly

respected and admired, not only by the individuals that she serves, but also by her fellow colleagues. Dr. Gossage and Dr. Luparello are the only ophthalmologists in Hillsdale County.

We are welcoming new patients for eye exams and full optical services at both Hillsdale and Homer locations.

Where Your Vision is Our Focustm

Most major insurance plans accepted

Our team of experienced doctors at Gossage Eye Institute and Optical, offer a comprehensive eye examination to meet the needs of all our patients. Whether you have difficulty seeing at a distance, up close or both, our doctors will thoroughly examine your eyes to ensure your ocular health.

If glasses are prescribed, Gossage Eye Institute and Optical has a large selection of designer eye wear including Kate Spade, Coach, Maui Jim, Vera Bradley, and Calvin Klein. Custom reading glasses are also available. Our opticians will act as your personal shopper to help you look your best. We also offer the largest selection of children’s designer eye wear and accessories in the area.

Many times individuals will notice a change in their vision. In many cases a new prescription for eye wear will help improve the vision. However, there are times when these symptoms are caused by other more serious conditions. For example, glaucoma and cataracts can affect a patient’s ability to see and cause loss of vision if left untreated. Our doctors will determine the cause of your visual problem and offer the appropriate treatment and care.

Patients are also examined for trauma and diseases of the eye that require proper treatment to ensure that no permanent damage is sustained. Injury to the eye may cause problems with the retina. Allergies and infections can develop into more complicated problems if left untreated.

After a through examination by one of our doctors, you can be assured of your total ocular health.

Non-surgical treatments such as glasses or contact lenses are used by most individuals; however, with today’s latest technologies many of these visual problems can now be treated surgically as well. Four common conditions that can be treated surgically or non-surgically are:

Myopia is a focusing defect in which the eye is overpowered. Individuals with myopia have difficulty seeing in a distance because the eye itself is longer than average.

Hyperopia is a focusing defect in which the eye is underpowered. Persons with hyperopia do not see well near or far.

astigMatisM is usually caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. This causes the person to experience blurred or double vision.

presbyopia is caused by the inability to focus on near objects as we age. Individuals who have never experienced difficulty seeing clearly gradually find, as they approach their mid-forties, they are unable to read the newspaper or a book clearly. This is part of the natural aging process caused, as we age, by the inflexibility of the muscles surrounding the lens.

Gossage Eye Institute and Optical also offers cosmetic services including BOTOX, Latisse, refractive surgery such as Lasik, and eyelid surgery such as blepharoplasty. Call today to schedule an appointment.

From the

publisher It’s hard to believe two months have passed since our first issue. I hope everyone enjoyed a Merry Christmas and safe New Year. It was especially nice for us to be home and to celebrate the holidays with family and friends.

In this edition I wanted to stress the importance of health. Too many times we put our personal needs aside for those we love. The winter months are especially difficult on our bodies, so please take a moment not only to read the articles but to follow through with any health concerns.

I would like to thank everyone- our readers and advertisers alike who shared their thoughts of encouragement. Please keep the comments coming. Don’t forget to visit us on Facebook and become a friend. It is very exciting to watch the numbers grow! Well, I won’t keep you .....I am sure you are ready to dive in to this issue! Be safe and I’ll talk with you again in March.

Sabrina Nolan shares how she paid it forward— I did my Dad a big favor, I went in the woods and got 20 pieces of firewood and he was so thankful. Now we could have a bonfire this weekend. Also when I gave him the bracelet it gave him a huge smile. He hasn’t smiled like that in a longtime. It made me so happy to do something nice for my dad.

inter fashion can be many things, but most of all during cold weather months it should be functional, but what about fun and fashionable? In Michigan we spend 5-6 months a year wearing winter coats, hats, scarves, gloves and, yes, realistically sometimes even winter boots stretch out to half the year.

as you are running errands, shopping, walking your kids to the bus stop or gathering mail from your mailbox, the people around you get a glimpse of your fashion sense from your winter outerwear, boots, and accessories. unfortunately, many times this fashion glimpse tells a rather somewhat embarrassing tale of grabbing the first available jacket on the hook by the door, pulling on boots purchased prior to the unfounded concerns over y2K, and a donning a hodgepodge of accessories from who knows where. It’s time to step up your winter fashion game with some fun, novelty and fashionable winter items that will not only keep you warm, but heat up your overall look as well.

W

Along with the basic, functional outerwear pieces we all need, the addition of a unique novelty jacket, coat or vest which can really bring up your entire look with little effort. to create warmth and

style to your whole look, try adding a patterned coat in a great plaid or animal print, a high impact shiny vest, a cool leather jacket, or a fun out-erwear piece in a bright color or featuring novelty trim. Fur (real or faux) trim is particularly hot right now.

E ven if your current budget does not allow for the purchase of a new jacket or coat at this point

in time, you can always upgrade your winter look simply and inexpensively with fashionable new accessories. A fun patterned scarf, a chunky knit hat, a faux fur headband or a pair of trend on fingerless gloves can all signifi-cantly and quickly raise your fashion quotient from frumpy to fabulous.

Amazing Accessories

W inter boots need not be unat-tractive to be warm, functional and fashionable. current boot

trends include an emphasis on warmth with fur lining and trims (real or faux) and come in many lengths from sexy over-the-knee styles to cute yet practical ankle boots and even chunky slip on styles. you can still use your old boots for seri-ous snow falls or for playing in the snow while your feet enjoy a special treat wear-ing fashionable winter footwear.

March is one of three surgeons at the Hillsdale Community Health Center who offer the

bariatric procedure as part of a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of obesity. also part of the Hillsdale Surgical Group at the Three Meadows Building are doctors Daniel Baxter, D.o. and Dale McCririe, D.o.

The procedure has seen successful results since first performed Jan. 2, 2007. Free monthly seminars are held in the waiting room at Hidden Meadows, suite 260, to inform the public of the procedure’s advantages.

“There is a need locally, in the state and nationally for education on the topic because of how large people in our country are getting,” March said. “There is a significant price we pay for this -- we’re the first generation who won’t live as long as our parents because of it.”

SuRGeRy oVeRVIeWThe gastric band is a silicone ring that has an

inflatable inner band. The band transitions to a silicone tube that connects the inflatable section to an access port, which allows post-operative adjustments in the band tightness. It works by tightening around the upper part of the stomach, which decreases hunger and the amount of food that can be eaten.

another brand offered in addition to the Gastric band by allergan is Realize by efficon.

“Both produce the exact same outcomes and both follow the same indication of body mass index, or BMI,” March said. “Generally, those eligible have a BMI of 35 to 40.”

other common health related problems can be treated with the procedure, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, acid reflux and high cholesterol.

“The procedure takes about one hour and generally patients recover overnight and are home before lunch the next day,” March said. a general anesthetic is used, so the patient is out completely for the five incisions, which are from one quarter inch to an inch and a half in length.

WHaT’S RequIReDHCHC patients receive education and screening

prior to surgery and follow-up visits after surgery to insure success with the band. “This is required by the government and involves an interview with the dietician at the hospital, physical therapy, introduction of pre-operative and post-operative exercises and a psychological evaluation,” March said.

Two weeks of restrictive lifting is recommended following the surgery and a liquid diet is suggested

for the first few days, he added. after puree-type foods, the patients is generally back to a regular diet after two weeks, only at smaller portions.

WHy IT WoRKSThe procedure is health driven and comes once a

person reaches a certain weight that other methods have failed to control, March said. “Some people will fail at diets that in the long term leave them at the same weight or with a BMI of over 30, which is morbidly obese,” March said. “It’s been documented that expected longevity will decrease.”

In order to reverse this trend, combat illness and live to a normal expected age, the procedure is usually chosen over other surgeries such as gastric bypass, which involves cutting and stapling the stomach.

The methods are designed to keep hunger in control and patients are expected to lose 55 to 60 percent of their over-weight condition.

Because of the failure of other weight loss measures, there has been what March calls “an explosion” in bariatric weight control.

For the naysayer who believes their loved one may just need to eat less, March says the human brain doesn’t work that way. When a person eats less, the body thinks it is in starvation and the person is hungry more, he explained. and those who exercise may become discouraged because it takes 3,500 calories to lose one pound.

“Most of the time, people are exhausted after expending just 300 or 400 calories after exercising on the treadmill,” March said. “So, the weight is extremely difficult to keep off in the long term.” as it goes, those 100 or more pounds overweight require something significant or they won’t get to a healthy weight, March says.

CoST INVoLVeDCost is considered “cheaper” when compared

to missed work with other more involved surgical methods, March says. Spending around $18,000 to correct a weight problem with the gastric band procedure will eliminate all the other costly weight loss procedures many find useless. Health related problems related to obesity can cost that amount in a year, March says.

Though consultation fees are not included in the procedure, the consultation is needed to discuss the bariatric process and procedure with the patient. These are billable to the patient’s insurance company. according to March, there are many insurance companies out there and too many Blue Cross Blue Shield plans to say that each one covers the procedure. all insurance plans are based on a case by case review.

Typically, the patient contacts their insurance company after receiving the procedure code needed and obtains pre-approval if the procedure is a covered benefit. “This is all information that we encourage the patients to contact our office to obtain, so we can guide them through the steps needed to proceed with the program,” said Kimberly Friess, Bariatric coordinator.

RISK INVoLVeDas for complications, there can be some, but they

are rare. Nevertheless, as with any type of surgery, they can happen. There are two types that may occur. one is called slip and another is erosion. The slip only happens three percent of the time and occurs when the ring sneaks above the band pouch because it’s too big.

With erosion, the gastric band fastened around the upper stomach to create a small proximal gastric pouch gradually erodes into the stomach wall.

“overall, the gastric band procedure has seen success in the world for 14 and a half years, for nine and a half in this country and for three years here in Hillsdale,” March said.

PaTIeNT TeSTIMoNy Theresa Anderson of Hillsdale had the Gastric

band procedure performed by Dr. March at HCHC April 23, 2007. She is 44 and has been struggling with weight for more than 20 years.

IN HeR oWN WoRDS... The procedure was

a definite success for me and I would do it all over again. I had no complications and I’ve lost over 46 inches and 130 pounds. The last year of weight loss was a lot slower than I had in the past, but the pounds were still coming off slowly, as they should. I only have 20 more pounds to lose and I will be at my weight goal. I can honestly say that this is the smallest I have been in my adult life. I have so much more energy and I am healthier, just the little things, like trying to put on a seat belt or being able to sit in a booth at a restaurant without getting stuck, are the simple things I enjoy. I look at the band as a tool that I have to help me with my weight loss. I still have to make the right choices when it comes to food, like we all do to be healthy. I can say now that I am in control of my weight and it is not in control of me.

having the ability to perform life changing weight loss through laparoscopic band placement is something Dr. Norris March considers a mutually gratifying experience for himself and his patients.

loveIs In The air

Since February is the month of Valentine’s Day, love and romance are definitely in the air as are beautifully romantic fragrances. a splash, spray or spritz of a fabulous fragrance is the finishing touch to the dressing routine for many women since just the right scent can lift one’s spirits, enhance the mood and add a magical, alluring air to any woman’s presence.

There are countless fragrances available in every price point and combination of scents to meet every woman’s individual definition of what a romantic scent is to her. Some women love traditional romantic floral scents while others find woodsy or oriental spicy fragrances very sensual and still others may love the sassy energy that comes with a fresh citrus or crisp green scent. Below are the basic fragrance categories – generally speaking, you may find yourself drawn to one, two or more of the scent categories. Keep in mind that most fragrances on the market contain a combination of these different categories to create unique fragrance blends that mix with individual body chemistry to create a truly individualized scent.

a great way to determine a favorite fragrance (or two or three…) is to try out a variety of scents and types of fragrances such as perfume, cologne, body spray or solid. For convenience and because every woman’s taste is different, there are many fragrance sampler sets available that can help in the selection of a perfect scent that will help the wearer feel extra sexy and special. a sampler set is great because it allows a woman to actually wear the fragrance multiple times before purchasing a larger sized bottle rather than just spritzing on numerous fragrances at a beauty counter then making a final decision just when the olfactory system is perfectly confused. Finding the perfect fragrance is merely a spray away.

FLoRaL: This feminine fragrance is the largest and most popular fragrance category and features the intoxicating fragrances of flowers such as jasmine, orange blossoms, lavender, rose, gardenia, carnations as well as many other beautifully scented blossoms from the garden.

oRIeNTaL/SPICy: This sensual category features delightful mixes of warm, sultry aromas such as vanilla, amber, musk, balsam and spices.

CITRuS: Flirty, fresh and refreshing citrus fruit scents featur-ing lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit or mandarin create fragrance mixtures that are uplifting and light.

WooDy: Sweet and earthy aro-mas such as patchouli, bergamot, and oak moss are perfect for the nature loving girl.

GReeNS: Cool, crisp scents such as fresh cut grass, pine, juniper, fern, herbs and leaves are perfect for the roman-tic outdoor enthusiast.

With unemployment hovering at an all-time high in Michigan, many find themselves without healthcare coverage or with high-deductible policies that only cover major medical. For women, that often means setting aside unaffordable, but necessary, wellness and preventative health screenings, most specifically cancer screenings. With breast cancer being one of the leading causes of death in women, uninsured and underinsured women who can’t afford testing are left in a precarious position.

Fortunately, the Lenawee County Health Department LCHD oversees programs for women in both Lenawee and Hillsdale counties that offer free breast, cervical, and pelvic exams, and heart screenings as well as educational programs in overall wellness.

Since 1991, the LCHD has offered breast, cervical and pelvic exams to women 40 and older who meet income guidelines through its Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program BCCCP. In 2002, the agency added the Well-Integrated Screening and evaluation for Women across the Nation program, known by its acronym WISeWoman, to address the growing incidents of heart disease and diabetes in women.

The BCCCP was formed following the passage of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Mortality Prevention act of 1990, which gave the Centers for Disease Control CDC funding to establish programs in all 50 states. according to LCHD Director of Nursing Mary Vallad, M.S., R.N., who oversees the BCCCP programs in Lenawee, Hillsdale and Monroe counties, the agency was the first in Michigan to offer the program. She said the BCCCP has evolved to target women between the ages of 40 and 64, which the CDC shows is the group that is most at risk for diseases such as breast, cervical and ovarian cancer. To be eligible, women must earn less than 2.5 times the poverty level based on how many people are in the family. Women who qualify are given free pap tests, pelvic exams and mammograms.

“If there are any abnormal findings, we have providers who work with us,” Vallad said. “The whole beauty of the program is that if there is a diagnosis, with uninsured women, through the program we then are able to put them on Medicaid.”

The WISeWoman program falls under the umbrella of the BCCCP, so the women who participate in BCCCP are also eligible for WISeWoman services. That includes programs aimed at healthy living, such as smoking cessation and nutritional programs. It also includes screenings for cholesterol and blood pressure as well as diabetes. elaine McDonald, R.N., B.S.N, overseas the WISeWoman program.

“We work with modifiable risk factors, encouraging physical activity, good nutrition and smoking cessation. We do testing for cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure and discuss the results with each patient. Then, together we discuss how to make small changes in their lives to improve health. Women don’t think of themselves very often. Women are typically busy taking care of others,” she said.

Not only do the programs offer screenings and testing, but women who participate are linked with resources to help them continue on the path to healthy living, whether it is educational forums or consulting one-on-one with lifestyle counselors provided by the agency.

“The thing about public health is one of our missions is prevention. That’s a lot different from the model that’s out there, so we really focus on prevention,” said LCHD Health officer Patsy Bourgeois, M.S., R.N., who works closely with Vallad and McDonald on the wellness programs for women.

as with many publically funded program, the BCCCP is subject to the amount of funding available. Last year, the agency received funding to help 700 women. This year, decreases in funding allowed for only 530 women to receive services.

“one of our challenges in public health is to continue to provide all the services we have with continued reductions in funding, and this program is as vulnerable to that as any,” said Bourgeois.

even with the funding challenges, the agency is make a positive impact on women’s lives. To learn more about the programs, contact the LCHD at (517) 264-5235.

Frigid air causes blood vessels to constrict as the body tries to prevent heat loss, which raises blood pressure and can reduce oxygen flow to the heart. This is a natural response that also can put people with heart conditions and those involved in strenuous activity at higher risk of having a heart attack.• Keep your body warm, particularly by covering your head, hands and feet. These are the areas of the body that lose heat first.

Drinking too much alcohol may raise the levels of some fats in the blood. It also may lead to high blood pressure, heart failure, increased calorie intake and contribute to abnormal heart rhythms. Excessive drinking and binge drinking also may lead to stroke.• If you do choose to drink alcohol, limit yourself to one drink (i.e., one beer, one glass of wine, mixed drink.)

People tend to gain weight during the winter season and take in more salt and fat, which can put additional stress on a weakened heart.• Foods high in insoluble fiber are heart healthy. Try adding some of these to your menu: whole-wheat breads, cabbage, beets, carrots, Brussels sprouts, turnips or cauliflower.• To prevent overeating at a family dinner, have a small healthy snack, such as a handful of unsalted almonds or a piece of whole grain toast before heading out the door.• Continue to be physically active. By exercising as little as 30 minutes a day, you can reduce your risk of heart disease.• Excessive salt intake increases blood pressure and causes retention of fluids which may lead to the worsening of heart failure.

Following the holiday season, people may feel stress as their to-do list swells with additional activities. Add that to having to absorb financial pressures, such as paying for purchased gifts, travel expenses and entertaining and it’s easy to see why these factors can take a toll on the body.• Try budget-friendly winter activities such as sledding and skating. You also can set monetary limits so you don’t feel pressured to spend more than you can afford.• Be sure to get enough rest. Sleep for 7 to 8 hours each day.

Every year, over 1 million Americans suffer a heart attack. Nearly half of those are fatal. Here are a few of the reasons that researchers think may be to blame for the higher rate of heart attacks in the winter, as well as ways to help combat them.

Does your menstrual cycle seem abnormally long or heavy? Have you been diagnosed with anemia from blood loss? If so, you

may have menorrhagia (pronounced: men-o-rahj-ah). Menorrhagia is defined as unusually heavy or long-lasting menstrual periods. It occurs in 1 out of every 5 women.

More than 7 million women in America

experience a heavy menstrual cycle. Many of these women don’t seek treatment, believing that a heavy menstrual cycle is a normal part of the aging process and of menopause. In fact, a heavy menstrual cycle is not normal and can lead to complications, including:

• Fatigue • Severe cramps or pain • Embarrassment • Lifestyle restrictions • Iron-deficiency anemia Take control of a heavy menstrual period. Treatment options for excessive menstrual

bleeding include endometrial ablation, hormones, dilation & curettage (D&C), and hysterectomy. The NovaSure procedure is an endometrial ablation treatment option for women with a heavy menstrual period. NovaSure has an actual ablation

time of about 90 seconds—it’s a minimally invasive alternative to hysterectomy, and it’s free of the side effects associated with hormone therapy.

Now with the one-time NovaSure endometrial

ablation procedure, women can finally find reliable relief from heavy menstrual bleeding safely without the side effects of hormones or a hysterectomy. NovaSure lets women take control of their lives and return to their normal routines quickly.

can make a more informed decision about which is right for you. For an overview of treatment options contact our office today

With more than a million patients treated

to date, NovaSure is proven safe and successful. A clinical trial has shown that more than 9 out of 10 women return to normal or lower than normal bleeding levels following treatments with NovaSure. For some women, their periods even stopped completely.

Many women also experienced a reduction in

PMS and painful periods, as well as other benefits such as less anxiety, greater self-confidence, and a boost in energy. NovaSure clinical trial post treatment survey results reveal,

• 45% reduction in women reporting PMS • 64% reduction in women reporting pain • 68% reduction in women reporting anxiety • 71% reduction in women reporting a lack of self-confidence • Nearly 4 fold reduction in women reporting a lack of energy NovaSure makes a difference! Many women find that treatment with

NovaSure frees them up to enjoy more of what life has to offer. According to the NovaSure clinical trial post treatment survey, 4 out of 5 women report spending more time at work and daily activities and missing fewer social and athletic events because of heavy bleeding.

Over a million women to date have chosen

NovaSure to reduce or eliminate their heavy periods and improve their quality of life. Women are very pleased with the results of the NovaSure procedure; 97% say they would recommend NovaSure to other women.

For some, wintertime offers an opportunity to stay inside with a blanket and a

good book -- but for others, the season brings with it a whole new excitement of sports and outdoor activities for children and adults alike.

Ice skating, sledding, skiing, snowboarding and other cold-weather activities are a great way to get some fresh air and exercise during those long chilly months. The american academy of orthopedic Surgeons (aaoS) has some helpful hints to help prevent injuries while enjoying these pastimes.

“Vigorous activity such as skiing is important, but the cold temperatures and slippery surfaces of winter can produce significant injuries, especially for children,” says allan Mishra, MD, spokesperson for the aaoS and orthopedic sports medicine specialist. “However, wearing proper clothing, protective gear and avoiding extreme weather conditions can improve their safety so no one misses out on the winter fun.”

The academy offers the following tips to help prevent these winter sports injuries:

• Cold muscles, tendons and ligaments are more susceptible to injury. To avoid this, do some light exercises for at least 3 to 5 minutes, then slowly and gently stretch the muscles to be exercised, holding each stretch for at least 30 seconds.

• Take frequent water breaksto prevent dehydration and overheating.

• avoid participating in sports when experiencing pain or exhaustion.

• Never ski, sled, ice skate, snowmobile or snowboard alone.

• Know and abide by all rules of the sport in which you are participating.

• Wear appropriate protective gear, including goggles, helmets, glovesand padding, and make sure equipment is in good working order and used properly.

• For warmth and protection, wear several layers of light, loose and water- and wind-resistant clothing. Layering allows you add and removeclothing to accommodate your body’s constantly changing temperature when outside or in a cold environment such as an indoor ice rink.

• Wear proper footwear that provides warmth and dryness, as well as ampleankle support.

• When falling, try to fall on your side or buttocks. Roll over naturally, turning your head in the direction of the roll.

• Pay attention to warnings about upcoming storms and severe drops in temperature to ensure safety.

• Become familiar with the whereabouts of fences, trees, rocks, open water and patches of ice. Stay on marked trails and avoid potential avalanche areas, such as steep hillsides with little vegetation.

• Be prepared for emergency situations and have a plan to reach medical personnel to treat injuries.

Weighing your

opTionsby Peggie BildnerSimply Hers Magazine

Cindy Padget is feeling pretty grateful these days- for her good health and for the opportunity to have a surgical procedure done locally that has changed her life. Like a lot of women, her weight started being a problem with her first pregnancy and continued as she had two more children. over the next 25 years, she used eating whenever she was stressed, finding herself at over 220 pounds. attempts at losing the weight were temporarily successful, but she would eventually gain it back and more. In 2003 Cindy’s father passed away from a heart attack. as she reflected on his medical problems that included high blood pressure and diabetes, she knew she could no longer deny that she was in line for the same. In March of 2007, Cindy made the decision to have the lap band, a bariatric *** procedure performed by the Hillsdale Surgical Group. She chose that procedure because it is the least invasive and reversible if you decide it’s not for you. She also liked the fact that she missed very little work. In the last three years, she has lost 80 pounds. Cindy doesn’t feel like she’s really had to give up any particular food, but has learned to be happy with so much less. She wants to encourage others to research this procedure and to not feel like it’s “cheating” to have surgical help. She feels that with the advancements they’ve made in this technique, “it is really hard not to succeed!”

a work in progress, 37 year old Samantha Gow still wants to lose a few more pounds. after successfully losing 115, she is confident she will reach her goal. Coming from a family that loves food and struggles with their weight, she started the gain/loss roller coaster in childhood. after having a baby five years ago, she realized her size 22 body could not handle, let alone enjoy, the physical demands of her infant. She also felt a new sense of responsibility to be an example for her children. With encouragement from her mother, she joined anytime Fitness. Working out every other day, she started to notice a difference in her weight and energy. She credits the fitness center with giving her the jump start she needed, and now stays active by biking and walking. a healthy size 10/12, Samantha has maintained her weight loss for about six months. Her new-found energy and sense of good health also enhances her position as a teacher’s assistant at the Manor Foundation. When asked what she would like to share from her journey, Samantha has this advice: Do it for yourself, do it while you’re young, and understand it is a new way of living for the rest of your life.

even though these women all achieved weight loss success taking different routes, they have several things in common; they have worked hard, and continue to face challenges every day. all of them talk about how much better they feel, physically and psychologically. The fact that they are willing to share their very personal stories shows a generosity and compassion for other women who are where they once were. Most of all, they are an inspira-tion to all of us- proof that new beginnings can happen any time of the year!

even though Karin Batchelor was always very active, she still battled a weight problem most of her life, at one time weighing over 235 pounds. as she entered her early 40’s, she wanted to do something about it before she got any older. “Sick and tired of being overweight”, she joined Weight Watchers*. after a couple of false starts, something just seemed to click as she learned the basic prin-cipals of eating the right foods in the right proportions. Concerned not only with the numbers on the scale but also with a diagno-sis of arthritis, Karin realized it was impera-tive that she keep moving. even though she is a busy, stay-at-home Mom, her ambitious exercise regimen consists of a 90 minute workout at anytime Fitness** and weather permitting, a 20 + mile bike ride. Karin has maintained her 100 pound weight loss for about 3 ½ years. She is a lifetime member of Weight Watchers and keeps herself in check by continuing to weigh in at a meeting every week. Her message to other women: “Never give up!”

Hello to all and a Happy New year as well! My name is John Dillard of “John’s affirmative Body Solutions” (J.a.B.S.) located in downtown adrian and I am a fitness instructor/personal trainer from adrian.

The most important information I can share is to set realistic goals. Don’t attempt to lose X amount of weight in so many days. Just try to improve the way you feel. The rest will take care of itself. Weight-loss is a by-product of consistent exercise and sensible eating.

Forget “Dieting”. Simply choose an eating plan that works for you. Let the food fuel your body not fill a void. Remember, you get what you give. If you give your body high energy, low fat food you’ll get much better perfor-mance from your body. Don’t eliminate the not-so-good-for-you foods that you love, just alter the amount you consume.

The next are we should address is exercise. There are two types of exer-cise that should be considered... cardio and weight lifting. each offers benefits, the trick is to balance the two in a way that benefits your lifestyle the most. a lot has to do with what you like to do but the combination of both is your best chance of burning a lot of calories.

Whichever you choose keep in mind there should be some sort of exercise at least 3-4 days a week, 45 minutes a day. also, listen to your body. It will let you know if you are doing too much, too soon.

I hope some of this information will help you get the year started right.

Have a specific question? I can be reached by e-mail at [email protected] or by cell phone at 517-403-9397 for any information on training or my workout classes!!! Have a great and healthy 2011!!!

Jane Rutan is less than half the woman she used to be! at age 49, the medical receptionist finds herself with more energy and self confidence than ever, after a weight loss of over 190 pounds. Like many others, Jane has struggled with her weight for as long as she can remember. She had some diet successes over the years but ultimately would end up gaining the weight back. at over 300 pounds, she found herself facing some serious health issues if she didn’t do something drastic. The answer came when a new insurance plan made weight loss coverage available. Her doctor discussed several options with her and in august of 2009, Jane decided on a form of bariatric surgery, called a gastric sleeve. The physical changes have helped her learn to eat smaller portions and be conscious of when she should stop eating. Today, she enthusiastically talks about how her life has changed. She loves to play volleyball, walk, ride bicycle, and most of all, keep up with her grandchildren.

Cassandra Hibbard’s decision to address her weight and body image was a practical one. even though she had gained about 60 pounds during her seven years of college and graduate school, she was never one to focus on her outside appearance. But as she went through the interview process for her doctorate studies, she felt she was being scrutinized, and possibly even perceived as not having her personal life under control. With a new consciousness, a television commercial about a packaged food weight loss plan caught her attention. With her father’s encouragement, Cassie made the decision to sign up for the program. She followed the plan closely and after seven months, has lost 97 pounds, going from a size 24 to a size 10! She tries to eat five times a day and counts her calories. It is obvious in talking with her that she has tackled this with the same determination and commitment as she does her studies. In fact, the main thing she wants other women to realize is that knowledge is power! She wants to encourage others to research the food they’re eating and says they’ll be amazed at the number of calories they unknowingly consume. Delving into the mathematics of calorie consumption vs. calories burned, she has applied that information to lose weight. at 26, Cassandra will now enter the job market with a confidence that shows the world she is prepared- inside and out!

one of the most common New year’s resolutions people make is to lose weight. We usually sabotage ourselves almost immediately by attend-ing a New year’s party or spending the first day of the year munching goodies in front of the football game. For some people, there is a defin-

ing moment when the resolve to lose weight goes beyond the usual half-hearted attempt. it may be a doctor’s warning that their health is in jeopardy, an embar-rassing situation, or a hurtful comment that stings one too many times. each of these local women made a life-changing choice to face their weight issues and had amazing results! here are their stories:

In a storefront more than a century old, Toasted Mud is bringing a new attraction to downtown Hillsdale. People of all ages enjoy the studio’s unique, hands-on experience. as a former art teacher at Hillsdale’s Will Carleton academy, Macy appreciates the value of creative expression. She enjoys going out to paint with friends, one of whom first encouraged her to open a studio in Hillsdale. With the support of her husband eric, Macy selected the space and faced the task of transforming it into an inviting studio. The transformation wouldn’t have been possible, Macy says, without “all the hard work of al Clendening and his crew from Clendening Custom Builders,” a company based out of Hillsdale.

Toasted Mud boasts a wide selection of bisque pieces, ranging from special holiday and children’s items to mugs and platters. Before being heated in the kiln, the painted bisque undergoes a glaze treatment to preserve the design. While Macy is currently focusing on painting, she plans to gradually introduce wet clay and pottery wheel techniques as well. She has great confidence in her talented staff, which includes a professional artist and a senior art major from Hillsdale College. Some of their impressive pottery creations contribute to the décor around the studio.

Because the space easily accommodates a crowd, groups can reserve the studio for parties and after-hours events. Toasted Mud offers a range of affordable options for large gatherings. among other groups, the studio has already welcomed classroom field trips and Girl Scouts working to earn their badge for learning a craft. The after-hours parties present a unique opportunity for a private gathering. The package, which includes the bisque, the paint and supplies, and assistance from a trained staff member, makes no requirement for minimum group size. Toasted Mud also offers various birthday party packages featuring, among other things, party favors for each guest and a custom plate or frame for the guest of honor.

Macy hopes that Toasted Mud will ultimately enhance the surrounding community and provide a creative outlet for those who may otherwise lack the time or opportunity. “It’s the perfect place for groups from churches, schools, daycares, and elderly homes,” Macy says. In January, the studio will begin registration for bisque painting classes. If the clientele’s current response is any indication, the classes will fill up quickly. “everyone that comes in tells us how much they love it,” Macys says, “We’ve had nothing but positive feedback.” apparently the feeling is mutual. “I love Hillsdale,” she says, “I will never leave.”

toasted Mud’s brightly painted walls reflect the fun, creative atmosphere inside the studio. located in downtown hillsdale, toasted Mud offers artists of all ages the opportunity to paint their own pottery masterpieces. lining the vibrant walls are shelves of assorted ceramic pieces—blank canvasses awaiting a splash of color to bring them to life. A large pottery kiln occupies an enclosed viewing area. Antique tables sporting mismatched vintage chairs serve as workstations. And customers needn’t worry about making a mess—the artistic atmosphere is enhanced by what Jonna Macy, the owner, refers to as “throw your peanut shells on the floor” exposed original flooring.

Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

Page 31: Simply Hers Jan/Feb 2011

Self-improvement is a hot topic as you ring in the New Year. Before you embark on another fad diet or extreme exercise routine, take the pressure off yourself and transform your surroundings for a change. Start by taking a good look around your rooms to consider potential enhancements for your home.

Organizing projects might be an obvious choice but you can take them a step further by editing your spaces too. Remember that everything doesn’t have to be displayed at once. Too much clutter prevents you from noticing much of anything. Make an effort to remove one object from a room every time you add something new.

Put function first. Form is important but your spaces have to work for you and your family. Practical accents such as clocks, mirrors, corkboards and more have become more decorative in recent years. The selections might encour-age you to consider your needs before you purchase another piece without a purpose.

Like our wardrobes, our homes become dated over time. Color and style come into play among other details. Bring your décor into the 21st century with a cheerful shade of paint or remove a wallpaper border that has seen better days. It’s amazing how little a room may need in order to be revived. Often the small-est change will surprise and delight you with a major impact.

Rework existing pieces to modify your look without spending too much in the process. A colorful quilt can be taken out of storage and used to spruce up an old sofa or chair. A flat sheet with a pretty pattern can double as a tablecloth or be made into a unique drapery.

Personalize your rooms with meaningful objects such as family photos, heirlooms and collections gathered over time. You might want to fill a shelf with jars filled with travel mementoes like seashells from your favorite beach destination. You do want to avoid too much clutter, but every space should have something sentimental.

Add some details to the walls with architectural remnants or easy-to-remove decals that come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Make a small space live large with the clever use of a mirror. Just make sure it reflects something easy-on-the-eyes like the great outdoors. Find an old book with photos of nature that can be placed in affordable frames for a grouping that makes a big difference on a small budget.

Today’s technology forces us to rethink our spaces in many ways. As designs become more sleek and compact, there is no need to hide the TV or invest in a large entertainment center or desk. Sell or donate those bulky items for an instant increase in square footage. Less really can mean more when it comes to your interiors.

Reward yourself by hosting a post-holiday get-together to share the progress you’ve made so far. Your guests are likely to be convinced that everything old can be new again with a few smart moves. Then you can relax and enjoy your freshly refurbished spaces.

Ceramic tile is a popular choice for flooring in today’s homes. Ceramic tile is durable, easy to clean, and gives rooms an upscale look. Textures, shapes and colors can match almost any decorating style.

According to the Tile Council of North America, there are only two major types of ceramic tile. The first is Quarry tile which is made by compacting clay dust. The second type of ceramic tile includes floor tile, wall tile, and porcelain tiles.

Glazed tiles are available in high-gloss, matte, and abrasive non-slip finishes. This tile is a good choice for flooring. Hand-painted glazed tiles offer beautiful and detailed patterns, but the tile will have a incompatible look due to the glaze. Glaze is not an exact science , it is an art.

Mosaic tile is made from different types of clay with added color pigments. The added color goes all the through unglazed finishes. Mosaic tiles resist moisture and will not chip easily.

Porcelain tile is stronger and harder than other ceramic tiles because it is fired at extreme temperatures. Porcelain tile is an excellent

choice for high-traffic areas of your home.Quarry tile is produced from a mixture of

unglazed clays. This tile is available in brown, gray, and red earth tones. Quarry tile is usually porous. If left unsealed, it may stain.

Ceramic tile comes in many sizes; it varies in hardness, and has many different manufactures. Please speak with a professional when purchasing ceramic so you can understand what a V chart stands for and become knowledgeable of PEI hardness ratings. Any respectable tile company will share all this information with their customers. We at Hillsdale Interior are happy to educate a customer anytime.

The look and design you are looking for is completely up to you, the customer. Design is as big as the imagination. A couple of quick tips are: Dark or dirty ceramic tile will always look cleaner; large tile in a small space will not create a busy look; and chose a grout color that blends or matches the color of the tile, you want to see the beautiful tile, not the grout lines. If imagination is not your strong point seek the help of a designer or other professional.

Once Upon a Time we could sleep ANYWHERE...

Now we Have...

HaPPy NeW yeaR! When somebody says that to you, what do you think about? Do you feel a sense of optimism as you go into the New year? are you determined to make 2011 a better year than last? Start with a resolution to simplify your life by getting organized! There are some won-derful and fun products out there to help you get and stay organized, but you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get the job done. as your budget recovers from Christmas, here are some fun (mostly free) ideas for using things you already have, in a new way:

Did your family get gift cards for Christmas? use a rolodex or address index file to keep from misplacing or forgetting about them. File them under the store name.

Got stud earrings that you no longer wear or have lost their mates? use them for decorative push pins on a cork bulletin board.

• use a toothbrush holder to store and organize makeup brushes.

• a small pegged coat rack can be used to hang frequently worn necklaces and bracelets. Place it near your closet to simplify choosing outfits and accessories.

• The little plastic button holders that come with new clothing are just the right size for 2 or 3 pills. Great when you need to take your medication at a restaurant.

• Store extension cords in empty paper towel rolls by winding them in a loop and sliding them into the tube. To further organize them, write the length on the outside to quickly identify the size.

• an empty tissue or trash bag box will hold and organize plastic shopping bags. Stuff them in and they will pop out one at a time.

• use a file sorter/desk organizer to hold cookie sheets or cutting boards upright in your cupboard or pantry.

• Filled with decorative paper or fabric, an old picture frame makes a great vanity tray to corral dresser clutter. Take the hardware off the back and stick on round felt pads to protect your furniture.

• a cardboard six pack holder can be filled with picnic/potluck supplies (condiment bottles, plastic silverware, etc.) to keep them from falling over in your trunk or picnic basket.

• Keep a give-away shower cap (furnished in most motels) in your luggage to use for wrapping your shoes in when traveling.

• use an eyeglass case to keep incidentals (such as band-aides or artificial sweeteners) together and handy in your purse.

• Shower curtain hooks can be hung on closet rods to hold purses, scarves or belts.

• use your imagination to think of even more new ways to use old things, and get started on your New year’s resolution to Sort, organize, and Sim-plify your life! **your comments, suggestions and questions are welcome. email Peggie at [email protected]. Please put ‘SoS’ in the subject line

Detailed cutting Manicures Pedicures

By Willie SmithSimply Hers Magazine

Have you ever just wanted a change in your life? I wanted change recently but I was thinking something small. a new chair? No, I’m too cheap. What about a makeover for the bathroom? Nope, I hate

to paint. Hey, what about a new hair color? It’ll be different but not anything outrageously expensive or hard to do, right? Talk about putting someone over the edge – I did it to my husband this time.

a new hair color, eh? Wal-Mart here I come. everything there is inexpensive, right? When I say inexpensive and hair color in the same sentence, I’m not talking about a $20 box of hair color. I’m thinking real cheap. I’m thinking less than $5 cheap. I go to the store and finally find the cheap section of hair colors. I should have known something was wrong when I had to literally get on the floor to find this price range. They put it on the bottom shelf because it’s obviously not a big seller. The $20 colors are at eye level so normal women (okay, women who aren’t cheap) can find them easily and spend the extra money. Not me; no siree. These department stores aren’t going to get me to pay top dollar when the cheaper stuff will do just fine. Now really, when you can buy hair color for less than four bucks, why would you spend five times that much I asked myself? I can tell you why now.

I was originally thinking of a blonde shade; not platinum mind you, just something so my gray hairs would blend a little better and not stand up screaming, “Look at this woman – she’s getting old.” you see, as I’ve gotten older, my hair has gotten very dark so when the gray started coming in, it was very noticeable! yikes!

There are relatively few colors available in my price range (another clue I ignored that signaled trouble). I’m looking for blonde, but then I find this box of red. as I look more closely I think red, huh? I’ve never been a redhead, though my husband swears I should be with the temper I have. The more I look at this red color, the more I like it. I look at the back of the box where it shows the before and after pictures. With my hair being as dark as it is, I got the lighter shade of red otherwise no one would notice I’d done anything different, right? WRoNG!!!! Never, ever let the picture decide your color for you! The pictures lie and I’m living proof.

I start the coloring process and while I wait I dream of a gorgeous shade of auburn. Not a strawberry blonde mind you, but a light auburn that will catch the sunlight and glisten. The color that will bring sighs of pleasure from men as they pass me. The shade that will cause unknown females to ask if that stunning shade of red is natural, and if not, what the brand and box number are so they can get that color for themselves.

oh yeah, I’m pattin’ myself on the back already. Not only did I not pay hair salon prices, but I picked THe shade that’s gonna make other women envious. I’m smiling big time as I start towel drying my hair. Whoa! I glance in the mirror and see a red that’s a little brighter (actually a lot brighter) than I thought it’d be, but my hair is still wet so I assure myself those auburn highlights will appear as soon as my hair dries completely. WRoNG aGaIN!!!!

I turn from the mirror while I’m using the hair dryer because I want the “Shock and awe” factor when I turn around and see the color for the first time. Shock it was! Holy Cow! What happened? This can’t be!! I flip all the lights on in the bathroom to be sure I’m seeing what I think I’m seeing. Holy Mother of God! Who is that? What color is that? I start panicking. I’m about to hyperventilate so I sit down on the toilet, put my head between my legs and breathe deeply. I can’t get that Bozo red color out of my mind and I’m still having trouble breathing so I yell at my husband to bring me a paper bag to breath into. He comes running to the bathroom with the bag in hand but stops short when he sees me. His eyes bug out, he screams like a girl, shoves me off the stool, sits down and breaths deeply into the paper bag. Talk about somebody going over the edge – as soon as he recovers I’m sending him to Wal-Mart for a box of dark brown hair color.

The Hillsdale County Community Foundation was established in 1991 to support the improvement of quality of life for the residents of Hillsdale County. The Foundation strives to meet this goal by awarding numerous grants and scholarships, and also by actively participating in and supporting community service projects. The Community Foundation provides a simple, powerful, and highly personal approach to giving. We offer a variety of giving tools to help people achieve their charitable goals – and create lasting good work in their communities.

Here are some of our highlights from the past fiscal year:

Through the Hometown Partnerships program, we sponsored our first Homegrown & Happening Entrepreneurial Event, aimed at small businesses and those wishing to start a business. We successfully provided resources to over 50 individuals and businesses in pursuit of self-employment and a brighter tomorrow.

We saw tremendous success in our first ever Match Day in November, 2009. With the inspiration to provide critical support to small non-profit agencies that focus on serving those most in need in our community, the Foundation provided matching dollars to contributions raised in one day. Our community raised $223,000 to support 14 area agencies, creating the largest single day of giving in Hillsdale County.

We provided strength and resources to our community through our grantmaking. Our grant program provided $ 254,979.85 to many worthy organizations and programs in our community through donor-advised, field of interest, designated, pro-active and competitive grants. Our scholarship program granted 156 different awards totaling $155,230 to deserving area residents to pursue education beyond high school.

We continued our commitment to education through our Elementary Philanthropy Program, teaching 400 3rd graders about the importance of helping others and giving back to the community. The expectation is that the children will continue to participate in the concepts taught, resulting in a lifetime of service to others. We also displayed our dedication to higher education by hosting the 3rd Annual College Fair at Hillsdale College, with over 60 college representatives on hand to talk with area students about their future plans.

The Foundation also administers the Warm the Children Fund, which provides financial support for needy families in Hillsdale County to receive warm, winter clothing. All participants are screened by local human service agencies and the program is administered by the Foundation. In 2010, 174 children were provided warm winter clothing through this program.

The YOUTH (Youth Opportunities Unlimited Throughout Hillsdale) of the Foundation also do their part in meeting the needs of young people in Hillsdale County. In 2010, The YOUTH awarded $43,804.38 to different organizations for projects designed and implemented by youth, for youth. In addition to grantmaking, the YOUTH also carry out at least four projects each year in the areas of volunteerism, community service, awareness, and fund development.

While still economically challenged, Hillsdale County has proven its ability to pull together in times of struggle to support one another and celebrate achievements. This is what makes Hillsdale County exceptional and distinctive. The Hillsdale County Community Foundation is dedicated to making a difference any way we can. Regardless of future events, the Community Foundation will be here, providing assistance and addressing critical issues for those in need in our community. For good, for ever, we will serve Hillsdale County.

The Benefits of Massage to the elderly

Massage therapy offers significant benefits to senior citizens and improves their sense of well being by managing the effects of aging.

People of all ages benefit from the pleasure of human touch but human touch and company for a short period of time are invaluable for lonely and sometimes depressed seniors.

The older generation may have a more reserved attitude toward massage than younger clients.  a clothed back or neck-rub or a hand-massage may be the most appropriate massage. The benefits of touch do not need a formal massage table.

People often become less active as they age

resulting in stiff muscles and soreness. Massage decreases muscular stiffness, helps maintain joint mobility and flexibility and reduces the potential of arthritis setting in.  Massage provides a natural means improving mobility and causes the body to release endorphins that act as natural painkillers. Seniors already suffering from the pain of arthritis receive considerable relief when treated with hot wax dips followed by range-of- motion massage.

Gentle massage around the spine offers pain

relief for females with osteoporosis.  Light massage and elevation helps relieve pressure for seniors with poor circulation and limb swelling.  administering touch to the elderly can also increase appetites; calm agitated states and promote restful sleep.  It is important to choose professional massage therapists experienced in geriatric massage.  Geriatric massage strokes are very gentle and use light pressure to protect thin skin that can be easily bruised or torn.

There are times to refrain from giving a massage to the elderly because it may adversely affect a health condition. It is always acceptable to consult a physician before starting a massage therapy series.  a full knowledge of the elderly patient’s medical condition is necessary when deciding which types of treatments will be helpful without causing harm, discomfort or embarrassment.  The elderly also often have skin problems but such problems (rashes, wounds, bruises, burns, and blisters) are usually local so clients can still receive massage in other areas.

Professional therapists should check with their client’s physicians before administering a massage to anyone with health concerns. While it is always wise to be cautious, the right massage treatment from a professional massage therapist can be invaluable to seniors.

LIFEis The

Berries By Laura LoveberrySimply Hers Magazine

Can you have peace in the midst of a storm?

In Philippians chapter 4 of the Bible, Paul explains, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” I witnessed the peace of God in the middle the storm, during my last visit to my parents.

After 18 hours jam-packed in the family car, my entire family plus my son’s steady girlfriend, arrived in sunny Florida. But this was not the usual “were so excited to have fun in the sun” trip. My Dad is facing a life-threatening storm on the horizon. Cancer. Just the word alone evokes a tempest fear of hurricane proportions. We realized this might be the last time we see our dad and grandpa.

But our visit allowed us to see a cancer-filled man at peace in the eye of the storm. Dad’s days are numbered, yet he does not need to make a bucket list. He lived his life full, placed his faith in Jesus recently, and has perfect peace. At this point, 90% of his time is in the “Dad recliner” in the middle of the living room. Dad adventures to short walks with winded breathing out to the dock, to tinker momentarily in the carport, or

to grab a bite to eat in the kitchen. For our trip down, he reserved up his energy to take all out on the boat to our favorite little island beach. We call it “Disappearing Island” because the ocean tides never keep the sand the same. Ironically, the island was shrunk to the smallest size we had seen in years. Dad stayed on the boat and just enjoyed watching his granddaughter catch minnows with her pink fishing net, laughing at our silly chasing of seagulls, and just taking in the blessing of one last day at the beach with family.

My brothers and sister came down together for a last reunion of sorts. We celebrated life with a home cooked meal and good fellowship. Catching up with news of each of our lives, my sister and brothers just simply enjoyed each other, as my Dad continued to sit in his chair and take it all in. I think he takes satisfaction in knowing his kids are doing well. Yet, the ever-present knowing that Dad’s cancer is terminal is in everyone’s mind.

I will always cherish our perhaps final goodbye together. Dad exerted his energy to walk out to the car with the rest of us. Emotions were right on the surface as we knew this might be the last time together. I announce, “Group hug!” We interlocked our arms over each ones shoulder and formed a circle in the driveway. The Lord prompted me to pray, so we bowed out heads in the circle, and I began to thank God for our time together with Mom and Dad. I became overwhelmed, so my teenage son Markus took over in prayer.

Next my daughter Madison sweetly called on God. Right around the circle we had spontaneous prayers. We had a church service of sorts in the driveway. My husband thanked God for the example of strong faith Dad displays in the face of adversity. As I looked down during prayers, I saw the silent splashes of tears falling all around the once dry cement at our feet. My husband is choked up and paused to collect himself as my mom steps in to talk out loud to God. What a precious time of prayer and love. We will cherish “the circle” moment forever. If you knew my Dad before his conversion to faith in Christ, you might be surprised to think of him as calm at peace man facing eternity. It is what it is. Cancer is reality. But the power of God to give perfect peace, wash hearts clean, and give hope for despair is more powerful.

Do you long for the peace that passes all understanding? My Dad put his faith in Christ, and God’s peace is wrapped around his soul. God may not change your circumstances, but I am witness that He can give you peace in the storm. Be encouraged by reading all of Philippians. It is packed full of joyful statements, despite the author, Paul, writing while chained in prison.

Just like my Dad, you may have harsh external conditions and circumstances, but you can experience gentle internal peace. God gives inward strength to “rejoice in the Lord always” when your heart and mind are in Christ Jesus.

Lately I’ve become intrigued by the show “Hoarders.” It’s fascinating in the way that a train wreck is fascinating – best seen from afar. The stories highlight the tendency of some people to keep everything they buy, from thrift store tschosckes to jars Newman’s own Tomato Sauce (Super bargain! Couldn’t pass it up!). The real people have extreme hoarding problems affecting not only their ability to live in their houses but their relationships with loved ones and their health. The homes shown are filthy and the lives are in ruins. It appears that hoarding is a complex psychological problem that can take years to resolve.

I like to use the show as motivation to purge items from my own home. although I don’t hoard, I recognize that I have kept some things for absolutely irrational reasons. yesterday I finally donated a bedspread to the Salvation army that I had been schlepping from house to house for 20 years – without using it! I realized that, in the back of my mind, I was thinking, “It’s such a nice comforter, and you never know when I’ll have an extra twin bed that needs a bedspread!” Seriously? a factory-made quilt that I last used in 1987? Then there was the connection to my childhood home and, honestly, a much different life than the one I am leading now. But I can remember that time better with pictures and discussions with my friends and parents. once I figured out my thought process, I could easily throw the comforter into the car (laundered and bagged!), with the hope that someone out there could really use a nice, thick blanket this winter.

as I look at the generations from my grandparents to myself, I realize how easy it is to begin collecting things. My grandparents came of age during the depression and owned relatively little their entire lives. They worked

hard and only bought what they needed. My grandfather, who is 95, still saves – money, not things. My parents inherited that saving mentality – my father is a master at finding uses for random objects – but did slowly begin accumulating “stuff ” around 15 years ago when the big, cheap stores came along. our generation is clearly challenged by the overabundance of tempting stores and online retailers. The record number of bankruptcies shows that we may have even lost our way. It’s difficult to find a middle ground between buying strictly “needs” and buying so many “wants” that we get lost in our own houses.

It’s taken a while, but I am starting to create my own purchasing philosophy by writing down “big picture” buying and purging goals for 2011. I’ve been spurred on by an imminent move and a transfer date that will come whether I am ready or not. I have become more conscious of spending money locally on higher quality goods and services instead of buying a lot of something because it’s cheap. at this point in my life, I am also welcoming technology to get rid of the books, paper and CD’s in my house.

I don’t think I’m in danger of becoming a hoarder, but watching people struggle with their arbitrary collections of junk has made me realize that most of us have irrational emotional attachments to things. I’m trying to keep this quote from the nineteenth-century designer William Morris in mind: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”

With that, it’s time to clean out the basement.

1 tsp. corn starch1/2 tsp brown sugar1/2 cup beef broth

1/2 cup cream cheese2 Tbsp. green peppercorns

Heat grill to medium-high heat Brush both sides of steak with oil. Grill 4 to 6 minutes on each side or until medium doneness (160oF). Remove from grill; cover. Let stand 5 min.

Meanwhile, mix corn starch and sugar with whisk in medium saucepan. Gradually stir in broth; cook on medium heat 2 minutes or until thickened, stirring constantly. add cream cheese and peppercorns; cook and stir 2 to 3 minutes until cream cheese is melted and sauce is well blended. Slice steak. Serve topped with sauce.

Steak with Creamy Peppercorn Sauce

In the case of grilled steak, your choices are plentiful. Grilled steak with the rich cream cheese and peppercorn sauce needs a rich wine that will keep up as well. Full bodied wines will do the trick. Options include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Zinfandel.

David’s offers numerous choices including Ballentine Zinfandel, Dona Paula Cabernet and Boarding Pass Shiraz.

Mediterranean Meatballs with Couscous

The Mediterranean pork meatballs with couscous add many different elements. The spices in the Marinara sauce call for an off dry white that will offset the spices in the food. An off dry Riesling, Pinot Grigio or an Albarino are options. If you prefer red wine, Beaujolais or another medium-bodied red would work. David’s stocks many options in this category, including August Kessler Estate Riesling, Riff Pinot Grigio and Morgadio Albarino. Wine pairings suggested by
