A STUDY OF MARK’S GOSPEL “NEW WINE FOR NEW WINESKINS”—A WORD OF INVITATION…& WARNING Many products include warning labels. Most are helpful to pro- tect users, but some are just ridiculous, like Nytol sleeping pills, which comes with the warning label, “May cause drowsiness;” and the warning on chainsaws which reads, “Do not hold the wrong end of a chainsaw;” and the label on a carton of eggs which warns, “This product may contain eggs.” While it is often overlooked, the Gospel of Jesus Christ includes its own warning label: “Do not put new wine into used wineskins, because the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be ru- ined. Instead, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins.” (Mark 2:22). Mark includes this warning to assure readers that the Gospel is not for people who just want a little religion to make them respectable – something they might tuck in their pockets or fit neatly into their busy, overburdened lives. Instead, like new wine the Gospel message is an explosive force which will be neither contained nor tamed. Its transformative power will burst open negative self-concepts and narrow world-views, will explode harmful prejudices and defeatist outlooks, and will both enlarge dreams and redirect passions. Beginning August 30, worship in the Bridge will focus on Mark’s explosive gospel in a series called, “New Wine.” I am honored to have been asked to preach this series almost every week, and I am excited about the amazing, engaging worship which Shannon Chandler and the design team have planned. I invite you to take part – not just to attend passively, objectively, and unaffected, but rather to embrace and experience fully the transforming power of the Gospel. The grace and truth of Jesus Christ mingle together to form explosive, cleansing, empowering new wine. That wine offers new life and comes with a warning, “Drink deep or taste not.” CONNECTING POINT INFORMATION The Connecting Point is published monthly by FUMCT, 800 Greensboro Av- enue, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35401 ● 205.345.7261 ● www.fumct.org Editors: Liz Kindred & Hannah Crisp ● Deadline for copy: 2nd Monday of each month is the deadline for the following month’s publication. It’s called Disciple Fast Track. Along with large shrimp and silent scream, Disciple Fast Track is an oxymoron. There is nothing “fast track” about discipleship. There are not short cuts: there are no bypasses. Becoming a disciple of

Jesus Christ is a life-long process of growth and development. There is no instant disciple of which I know anything!

I have been studying the Bible all my life. Like God’s mer-cies, the Bible is new every morning! The Bible is not a book you can fast track. The Bible consumes us! It shapes our perspectives and transforms our lives. You cannot fast track the Bible.

So it is odd that the latest version is called Disciple Fast Track: Bible Study for Busy Lives. Given my objections to the notion that you can fast track becoming a disciple or reading scripture, I like what the publishers have done with this new version.

Special Guest Speaker & fashion photographer, Michael Belk in The Bridge Sunday, September 13 │9:00 AM & 11:00 AM sponsored by the lee bible conference & lee sunday school class

During the past 30 years, Michael Belk’s photography has appeared in fashion publications including Vogue, Elle, GQ and Vanity Fair for clients that included Nautica, J.Crew and others.

Combining his gift for photography with a natural sense for sales and a little marketing savvy, Michael created catalogs and print collateral and, eventually, advertising campaigns throughout the clothing industry. With his unique style, quality of products, speed of delivery and value, his business and his reputation grew. He has been the man behind the cam-era, the creative director and the account executive for his own boutique fashion-advertising agency, Michael Belk & Company. He says that it has not been as much about work as about doing something he loved while traveling the world, working with many great models and crews in the industry.

By 42, Michael says that his life was defined by “great excitement, huge success, but very little substance.” It was a busy life, but one running on empty. Something was missing. That's when he had a visitor and he recalls “the absolute presence of God” in his room. God asked, “More of your way or would you like to try Mine?” He wanted to try “God’s way.” Although Michael’s world was not instantly restored, a change was underway and the journey to know his Lord and Savior had begun.

Sensing that God had greater plans beyond his fashion career, he began pursuing an idea that he believes God put on his heart. The idea was to produce a collec-tion of fine art photographs that would depict messages of Jesus and show His relevance in our modern world. The idea became a project and in 2008, Michael closed the gallery and put his fashion photography on hold to begin work on Journeys with the Messiah. The project, which was first published in late 2009, consists of 45 images and the “parable-like” messages they depict. It has received accolades from around the world, including Dr. Charles Stanley of In Touch Minis-tries in Atlanta.

The images have been interpreted beyond the limited-edition, signed and num-bered fine art original to include a coffee table book, behind the scenes DVD, post-ers and more. Michael travels to churches and other venues to present the images in an exciting audio/visual presentation. An exhibit and more images are planned.

Visit www.journeyswiththemessiah.org for more information and to see more of his work.

ENDOWMENT FUNDSImpacting People

You May Never KnowIn June, when over 100 of our youth went to a retreat on the Gulf Coast, the church ensured that we had adequate and safe transportation. The cost of the buses, $8,800 was paid from two endowments of our church—the Shanley-Matthews Fund and the Callahan Endowment. These families left gifts to the church in their wills such that the earnings from their endow-ments paid for charter buses.

Another source, the Conwill-Armstrong Endowment was part of the funding too. Mrs. Billie Ruth Moore, an active church member, funds this in memory of her parents. It is amazing that these families gave to make this trip possible for students and parents that they will never know personally.

Recently, Dr. Olivia Kendrick established the Women’s Discipleship and Mission Endowment. The purpose of this fund is to enable training and opportunities for women to develop into leaders in the church and to grow as strong disciples for Jesus Christ. By allocat-ing the earnings from this investment for years to come, our church will be able to extend its influence on women that are just babies in our nursery now. As they grow, so will the funding, enabling women to become more impactful leaders.

First United Methodist Church is important to our membership as evidenced by the generosity of current and former members as these. If you are interested in ensuring your legacy by establishing an endowment, please contact Gina Johnson, [email protected] or 205.345.7261 ext 101.

First Church now has a college newsletter. Cam-pus Connection is a weekly email blast to college students with tips, scripture, and news from our church. The purpose of this newsletter is to keep the busy lives of students informed on the latest news that will help them focus on a Christ-centered college experience. If you know someone who would like to receive this newsletter, please send their email to Liz Kindred at [email protected].

CHILDREN'S WORSHIP ARTS THIS FALL │ WEDNESDAY NIGHTS STARTING SEPTEMBER 2 FROM 6:00-7:00 PM │ Children, 3 years old through 5th grade, are invited to join us on Wednes-day nights this fall for a time of fun, fellowship, and praise. Children’s Worship Arts is divided into three age groups: Preschool Worship Arts (PWA) - ages 3 and 4, Kids Worship Arts (KWA) – Kindergarten through 2nd grade, and Psalm 150 – 3rd through 5th grade. These three groups meet from 6:00 – 7:00 pm on Wednesday nights starting September 2.

Our goal is to provide kids with an age-diverse music and arts ministry that allows them to learn ways to praise and worship through music, dance, drama, and theater. This fall, we will begin working on our Christmas musical, “An Out of the Box Christmas” by David and Celeste Clydesdale.

Also, all three CWA groups will lead worship in the Bridge and Traditions throughout the year. Our first date to lead worship is September 27, when KWA and Psalm 150 will sing in the Music and Worship Dedication service in 11:00 AM Traditions. We would love for your children to join us!!! For more information, contact Mandy Smith at [email protected].

Stephen Ministry can be a wonderful outreach of Christ’s love both to our own members and to the community. In the second chapter of his epistle, James tells us, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” He says we need to be “doers of the Word, not just hearers.” Just talking about loving and car-ing for one another doesn’t automatically make us a loving and caring congregation. We need to be doers! Stephen Ministry is a wonderful way to be doers of the Gospel.

WOW TEACHER TRAINING │ WOW Teacher Training will be September 6 at 12:15 PM in the library next to W.O.W.

W.O.W.'s Children's Worship will not resume until September 13. Please remain in the service with your parents until then.

ACOLYTE MINISTRY │ If you think your Kindergarten-5th Grade children would like to serve as acolytes, please bring them and join us in the sanctuary at 9:45 AM on September 13. Acolytes light and extinguish the candles,

help collect the offering, and are an important part of the Traditional service. Please join us to learn more. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Thigpen [email protected] or Nini Jobson [email protected].

8 MISSIONS & OUTREACH 5family ministries

Welcome to a new school year! │ With this new year upon us we also get ready to start yet another se-mester of our Wednesday Nights Alive programming and this year we have several new offerings to make Wednes-day night at church a wonderful option for each of you and your families. One new venture we are trying this semes-ter is weekly mission projects on Wednesday night!

Each Wednesday night of this semester we will be host-ing a mission option. Some weeks we will be working in the church on projects to deliver to various ministries and individuals. These projects will mirror our current mission program; we will work on projects for local, national, & international ministries. We will do this each week from right here in our own building (for the most part). Each week will be independent from the other offering individu-als the chance to participate on weeks of their choice without needing to participate each week and there is little to no preparation required on the participant’s part. Please read below for the schedule of projects and a small synopsis of each project.

How many hours are you technologically connected on a normal day? If you were to add up your hours online, your glances at text messages, your streaming music, your perusing social media, your Netflix addiction, how many hours would you count? It’s probably a lot. Our culture is obsessed with technology—and with good reason. Technology keeps us connected to each other and to the world around us. Nearly every device we own trans-mits signals to something else, somewhere else. Why? Because that’s how they’re wired to function. Our phones, tablets, smart watches, gaming sys-

tems—they all are wired to connect to something outside them. And the same is true for us. We are wired for connection. It’s in our design. As we take a closer look at what Jesus called “the greatest commandment”, we discover that we were wired to have three vital relationships: with God, with ourselves, and with others. And when those connections are made, everything else begins to function as God designed it. Come Join us for Wired at Foomack. Wired Series begins in September! Join us Wednesday nights for Worship, Fun and Fellowship 6:00-7:30 starting September 2nd, Sunday School at 10:00 am on Sunday, & Small Groups starting after Labor Day.

September 2 & 9 │ Letters of encourage-ment and teacher care packages for Central Elementary & MLK Elementary Teachers- We will be writing notes of encouragement to each member of the faculty and staff at both of our school partners. We will then put together care packages to go with these letters and deliver them to both schools.

project #1

September 16 & 23 │ On Wednesday September 16 we will load up on the church buses and go take an educational tour of the Phoenix House Ministry. The Phoenix House is a ministry we support that is operated by two of our own church members. This minis-try seeks to assist individuals with drug and alcohol addictions in a Christian environment. We will be led by Jennifer Colvin and shown what we have done as a church to assist these individuals and also what we can do in the future to make sure we have this most needed ministry for our community. Then on September 23 we will work on a project for the clients of the Phoenix House and have them delivered to these clients.

project #2

September 30-october 21 │ For these four Wednesday nights, we will be working on gath-ering, sorting, boxing, and shipping Christmas boxes to each of the 196 children at Challenge Farm Orphanage in Kenya. This project is com-parable to Operation Christmas Child, however, we know, support, & have visited children at Challenge Farm. We hope you will adopt a child from Challenge Farm and bring items to us to be sent to our friends in Kenya.

project #3

november 4 │ We will be hosting our fourth “Stop Hunger Now” event in the church CAC. We will again be packing meals to ship out to areas of the world where food security is low or there has been a recent disaster that has led to a shortage of food. This is a high energy event for people of all ages. We will begin our work in the CAC at 5:00 pm this night and we will enjoy the food we are packing for dinner in Chitwood Hall starting at 4:45 PM. So come eat and join us for a night of mission fun!

project #4

november 11 & 18 │ Tree of Bears has been an annual project of 1st UMC Tuscaloosa for many years. Each year we work with Tusca-loosa County Department of Human Resources and help get Christmas presents for the foster children in their care. This is a wonderful project that will have some Sunday volunteer opportini-ties to make sure all the "bears" are adopted. We will then gather, wrap, and deliver these gifts to DHR for Christmas day.

project #5

No registration or preparation is necessary for these groups. Please at-tend any group any given week. For more information or to volunteer to assist with these projects please contact Joshua Davis at 205.345.7261 or at [email protected].

What a great outreach from FUMCT and the students of FOOMACK to our middle school youth. The high school students led while the middle school students had fun learning about our faith and how to SURRENDER. I can’t wait to see where the journey leads!
