be fruitful in the numerous charitable activities of the local councils, which, while meeting the needs of individuals, also build up communities in solidarity and concern for the common good.”

During the past year, Knights set an all-time record for charitable giving, donating more than $170 million and more than 70.5 million hours of service to charitable causes.

The papal message exhorts the Knights to defend religion’s “proper place in the public square and to encourage the lay faithful in their mission of shaping a society which reflects the truth of Christ.”

The convention’s theme, “You Will All Be Brothers: Our Vocation to Fraternity,” comes from the message of Pope Francis for the World Day of Peace, in which he observed, “Without fraternity it is impossible to build a just society,” and that Catholics share a “vocation to fraternity.”

“The Knights of Columbus, the Church’s largest fraternal organization, is uniquely positioned to answer this call,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “We carry out works of charity in a spirit of fraternal brotherhood, and are pleased to be able to answer Pope Francis’ call to all Catholics to care for our brothers and sisters in need.” The Knights of Columbus has grown to 1.8 million members with charity as the organization’s primary mission.

In light of this reality and to meet the ever-growing needs of St. Paul Church and community, our Council and Assembly have substantially increased our Charitable Contribution budgets to attempt to meet those needs.

Remember: Prayer Changes Things

Family of the Month

The family of the month of September is Dottie and Jim Dunham. Jim has spent countless hours doing volunteer work at Saint Paul which has saved the church a lot of money. He also is a head usher at the church. He takes care of some of the maintenance work at the Knights of Columbus hall and helps out in the kitchen or wherever needed. Dottie is a Eucharistic minister, does work with BAA and Merci Clinic. She always keeps herself available to help out at the functions we have at the Knights of Columbus hall. Congratulations Dottie and Jim for a job well done. Nick Dalessandro Family Director

Knight of the Month

This month Council 3303 honor Vincent Fragnito as the Knight of the Month. Vince is our chef and carpenter/cabinet maker.

Most of us know that Vince has been our Chef for many occasions. He has prepared many delicious meals for our widow dinners, bingo and yard sale appreciation dinners, yard sale lunches and dinners, and pot luck dinners. Since the Council began the Lenten Fish Fries a few years ago, he has organized and prepared many of the Lenten Fish Fries at St. Paul Catholic Church. Vince is a supporter of RCS, where he and his wife, Lois, have worked since moving to New Bern.

Page 4: September 2014 E-Knightlighter Rev 1 · Namowitz, and Andy Ferrer. It was another special occasion as the Honoree was Br. James F. Conneely, grandfather of Andy Ferrer. Thanks again

When we are renovating an area in our building, Vince has pitched in lending us his carpentry and cabinet making skills. Among the many projects he has been involved with, he made the cabinet for the bar area, installed the cabinet in the ladies rest room, and helped design the new cabinets in the kitchen. Vince also works in the furniture department repairing furniture for our yard sales.

Our knight of the month has recently become the Faithful Navigator for Assembly 1820. We congratulate him on his new appointment.

Thank you, Vince for joining the Knights of Columbus where you have made a difference.

Jim Whetzel, DGK

Sir Knight of the Month SK Bill Camp has been a knight for over 50 year’s .Since joining our assembly he has made himself available for many charitable activities. He participates in the 4th degree yard sale as the keeper of the money; you will find him at Monday night bingo, as well as a store captain for Lamb collections. If that’s not enough he helps at Merci Clinic, and volunteers for meals on wheels. He is a great example that if you have something that needs to be done he is your man. At the yard sale he works on computers and he can also repair lawn equipment I know because he has repaired mine. If you go to mass at 5:00 PM on Saturdays, Bill will be ushering or singing in the choir. Thank you, Bill for all you do

Our Guarantees Set Us Apart Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can guarantee. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries should something happen to you. That’s peace of mind, and that’s what we offer with our every product in our portfolio. We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there. We guarantee the rates on your term insurance. We guarantee our retirement products will provide a stream of income when you need it. On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, high-quality service that you would expect from our organization. Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Columbus “A++, Superior” for 38 consecutive years. It’s a testament to our track record for excellence and security. I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights. That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values permeate all levels of our organization. We pledge to serve our brother Knights, and their families, according to our Golden Rule: “In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself.” Let’s talk soon to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your family. Yard Sale News DON'T FORGET OUR LAST YARD SALE OF THE YEAR on OCT. 3 & 4. Our dedicated Tuesday Yard Sale Workers have been working diligently every Tuesday getting prepared for another gigantic sale. October is usually our best yard sale of the year and, with our Pick-up Crews steadily bringing in all those "treasures", I'm sure it will be another successful sale. In June we changed our hours on both days and we think it worked well, so we will use the same times for this sale. Friday, October 3rd we are open from 8:00 A.M. to noon and Saturday, October 4th from 7:00 A.M. to noon. On Tuesday, September 30th we will begin work at 7:30 A.M. unloading our storage areas. We would appreciate as much help as possible with this and, if you have a truck, which would also be great. We will clean up at 9:00 A.M. on Tuesday after the Saturday sale because the landfill is not open on Monday. Danny Gennantonio, Yard Sale Chairman

SPECIAL THANKS

A special “Thank You” to Larry Winsor for spending a lot of his time on a very hot August day trimming a tree for Nellie Messina, one of our widows as well as one of our yard sale workers. Branches from this tree were in danger of causing damage to her roof and the front of her porch. Thanks again Larry for such a quick response. Nellie has really been worried about that tree and I just couldn't manage it. - Danny

Special Olympics Spaghetti Dinner Andy’s 19th annual Special Olympics Spaghetti Dinner is fast approaching. He is watching us from above as we continue the tradition he started. Now is the time to mark your calendar for the October 16th date. Sign up to help serve the meal in the hall or carry out station in the Pub room. Ticket sales are the key to making this funds raising event a success. We are asking that you participate in this effort. To reach the goal of serving 700 meals we need the creativity of the membership in reaching out to the community to make it happen. I recently attended the New Bern Civitan Club meeting and asked them to sell 100 tickets. I am asking the Council and Assembly to sell 100 meals each; $6 for an adult and $3 for children 12 and under is a bargain. St Paul’s Parish has been a major supporter in the past. The school sends student volunteers to help serve. We would hope that families would see this as an opportunity to go out for dinner in support of a great cause. Please consider helping with ticket sales at St Paul Church after Mass on the weekends of October 4-5 and 11-12 we need help selling tickets at all Masses. Vivat Jesus Sk John Scharf

New Bern Community Mourns Passing of Brother Jim We ber James R. “Jim” Weber, 86, longtime member of K of C Council 3303 and Fourth Degree Assembly1820, and beloved friend of anyone who met him, peacefully passed away on Saturday, August 16 at his home in Fairfield Harbour. Jim is survived by Delores, his wife of 65 years, a son James R. Weber, Jr. of Magadore, OH, a daughter Lynn C. Till of Pittsburgh, PA, and three grandchildren Jason, Jessica and Tiffany. Jim and Delores have been longtime parishioners at St. Paul Church where Jim was a fixture serving for many years as an usher at the 5:00 P.M. Saturday evening Mass. Jim’s easy smile was an open window revealing a gentle nature and unselfish spirit which always put others first. His quick wit often made for good natured ribbing between Jim and his friends. With a twinkle in his eye, Jim’s familiar refrain, “Why pick on me? I’m such a nice guy!” would typically end these light hearted forays in a round of raucous laughter. Many recall Jim organizing yard sales in his Fairfield Harbour community to help benefit the poor. Whether it was working Bingo, serving as Chairman of Operation LAMB, or joining his pals in the Msgr. Jones golf tournament to benefit St. Paul School, whenever he could, Jim was always there alongside his Brother Knights volunteering to help the needy in the New Bern community. On Monday, August 18 at St. Paul Church a funeral Mass was celebrated by Father Bill Upah, our Fourth Degree Friar. Also presiding on the altar was Father Tom Tully, our Pastor and Council Chaplain. At the Mass Brother Knights, including the Fourth Degree Color Corps, joined Jim’s family and friends to honor the life and legacy of an exemplary Catholic Christian gentleman and Knight of Columbus, SK Jim Weber. Mikie Casem, PGK

Rev. Father Tully Installed Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Raleigh, celebrated Mass and installed Rev. Father Thomas S. Tully, as Pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church in New Bern, N.C. Father Tully, originally from Long Island, New York was ordained 30 years ago in North Carolina. After the Mass, there was a reception to meet Bishop Burbidge, Rev. Father Tully and others. In their usual professional attire the Color Corps was there to welcome the Bishop and Father Tully at the Mass. Congratulations to SK Danny Colbert, the new Color Corps Commander. The Stewarts

Sir Knight of the Month Knights of Columbus-Father Kenneth I. Parker Assembly # 1820 recently presented Sir Knight Paul Scharf the award for the Knight of the Month. This award presented by Sir Knight Vince Fragnito, Faithful Navigator, is given to those that contribute greatly to the Knights. Having Downs Syndrome, does not prevent Scharf from participating in various activities. For the past 9 years he has manned the candy cart at the Knights Monday night bingo. In addition he helps at the annual Special Olympics Spaghetti Dinner, started by SK Andy Yandura 19 years ago. Scharf participates in the Special Olympics bowling, swimming and bocci competitions. We congratulate Paul Scharf and would

like to describe him as a man of few words and a fantastic smile that inspires all of us. The Stewarts

School is in Session As many of you know by now, school in back in session. How can you miss all of the frantic parents in Wal Mart buying pens, paper, notebooks, glue, and more? It also means that those big yellow things are back on the road. You know the ones that I talking about; the ones that stop at almost every drive way and creep along at the speed limit! This year Craven County School has staggered the starting time for the three different levels of schools. High schools start at 7:30 A.M. and dismiss at 2:30 P.M. Elementary schools start at 8:00 A.M. and dismiss at 3:00 P.M. Middle schools start at 8:30 and dismiss at 3:30 P.M. This has resulted in busses being on the roads, picking up or dropping off students, for a longer period of the day. With our normal seasonal change in sunrise and sunset and the shift from Daylight Savings Time coming soon, all drivers need to stay focused when driving during the bus routes time. As a teacher, I want to see all of my students get to school safely. As a driver, I do not know how I could drive again, if I caused harm to any of the children waiting for a bus or riding on a bus. The bottom line – Please, Please, be careful when you see one of those big yellow things on the road. SK Mike Haynes, Editor

One More Editor’s Note If you know of an event that is not reported in our newsletter and would like to see it reported, please send it to me. My email is [email protected] . I need all articles as soon as possible. I am a middle school teacher who does not get home before 5:00 P.M. each day. I want to keep this a quality publication for you, so I need time to read, edit, and sometime get more information to put everything in the correct order. I have to work around grading papers, entering grades, writing lesson plans, continuing education classes, and attending events at my school. Time is something that I have to manage very carefully in order to accomplish everything I have to do every day. I would like to thank everyone that has submitted articles and photos. I will always do my best to get every article into the newsletters. My goal is to have the E-Knightlighter published by the Friday before the 3rd Degree meeting and the Knightlighter to the printer by the Thursday before the 3rd Degree meeting. Remember, timing is everything, the closer an article is published to when the even happened is much more meaningful. Enjoy, SK Mike Haynes, Editor
