COMMODORE’ S CORNER
Wow! The summer has been fast and furious, in a good way,
but people were so busy, we had to cancel the cruise to
Ganges. Ganges received only two reservations from us, and
one of those had to cancel leaving only Gypsy Spirit. Then
we got jammed that weekend and cancelled as well. I found
out shortly thereafter that Mike and Barbara Morey on
SeaPass were planning to go. Last I heard they may have
been delayed as well. Too bad. Ganges is always great fun.
Maybe we’ll still go this year...but we can always try again
next year.
The yacht club’s sailing program continues to grow and
thanks to our Sailing Chair, Russ Johnson, we had an excel-
lent Second Annual Lopez Cup Sailing Regatta on August
10th. We had 12 boats participating this year, and first over
the finish line to win the coveted Lopez Cup were Mike Ka-
minskas and Nancy Crowell skippering a Mount Gay 30
Bullet, apparently appropriately named. A close second was
Bill White, Tom Patty and Fred Neilson aboard their Etch-
ell Valkyrie. Third place was almost a photo finish with Lark
Dalton and Russ Levine on the 5.5 meter Sundance just edg-
ing out by a nose Dave Welker on Breathless Mahoney and
Russ Johnson’s Snapdragon. The Class B fleet (no spina-
kers) was won by George and Stepper LeBoutillier on their
Alerion Express At Last! Second place was captured by
Shanti, an Albert 35 skippered by Richard and Christy Mi-
klich and winning third was Rob McNeil, Jan Wagner, and
Robin aboard the Hans Christian 41 Bonnie Lass. Congratu-
lations to all those who participated and added so much to the
overall fun and excitement.
Speaking of the Lopez Cup, have you been following that
other famous regatta, the America’s Cup? The televised cov-
erage is spectacular! Even if you’re not a sailor, take a look.
It’s exciting to see these huge boats going up to 50 MPH and
not slowing down much at all to round the mark. The trials to
determine the challenger for the America’s Cup (The Louis
Vuitton Cup) was just won by Emirates Team New Zealand
who crushed Italy’s Luna Rossa 7 to 1. Continued on page 3

CORRECTION: The July 2013 “Newsline” incorrectly identified Doug Simmons as winning 2nd
place in Class A of the Rodman Duncan Memorial Bar to Bar Race on June 15. It should have
read, “2nd place in Class A went to Sandy Barr and crew in Waioli.”
COMMODORE’S CORNER, continued
So it will be New Zealand facing the U.S. boat Oracle. The first four America’s Cup races are Saturday and Sunday,
September 7th and 8th. Coverage is on Channel 5 NBC. The remaining races are on NBCSportsNetwork.
While you’re recording the America’s Cup on September 7th and 8th, you should be enjoying the tranquility and beauty
of Stuart Island aboard your own boat. That’s right! The Ze-Man is back to host the Prevost Harbor Spam Spectacular!
Based on the great reviews from the last Slo-Mo Prevost Harbor cruise (with a side of Spam), you won’t want to miss
this one...hope to see you there.
Hard to say, but the last official LIYC cruise is just around the corner, September 20-22, to Cap Sante Boat Haven in
Anacortes. We have a good sized group of boats already signed up, which always insures a great event. As a bonus,
the Anacortes Old Town area will be closed to traffic in association with the Oyster Run, the largest motorcycle rally in
the Northwest. Sampling a bit of the fun couldn’t be better than from your own boat. No traffic, you’ll have a reserved
place to park, and you’ll have a quiet place to hang out, but you can still enjoy the music, vendors, craziness, and good
people-watching associated with the Oyster Run. You will need to tell Doug Cram if you’re going so he can contact
the marina.
Lastly, and once again sadly, I’d like to comment on the loss of another Lopez Island boating pioneer, Ron Meng.
He’s touched and enhanced the boating lives of many thousands of people, especially those of us on Lopez Island.
From his start, fixing outboards from the trunk of his car, he built a marine business that now includes a Ron Meng sig-
nature boat, the Ocean Sport, which can compete on a world scale. For us personally, owning two Sea Sports and now
an Ocean Sport, we know and appreciate how much he’s done to enhance our enjoyment of boating. We were lucky to
have know him and will never forget him. We always think of Ron when we’re on Gypsy Spirit enjoying all the fea-
tures and sometimes subtle touches that have Ron Meng written all over them.

LIYC HAS NEW MEMBERS (and applicants)
Donald Stone and Elayne Czaja have completed requirements for LIYC membership. Please welcome them at our
upcoming events.
We have also received membership applications from (1) Rob Thesman and Marci >>>
Flanery. Rob and Marci moved to Lopez about a year ago returning to the Northwest
after many years in Northern California. They recently purchased a Whitehall skiff and
are discussing the purchase of a small daysailer (and
maybe a boat for fishing).
<<< And (2) Mike and Linda McReynolds. Mike and Linda own a 24’ Pursuit Double
Sea and are interested in cruising island waters, fishing, crabbing and shrimping,

You may have noticed a “blank” in the list of proposed
officers for 2014 (in the article above). Yes, we’re look-
ing for a Rear Commodore volunteer.
The Rear Commodore is responsible for scheduling the
cruises (June through September) and hopefully moving
up through the ranks to Vice Commodore, then Commo-
dore. Check out the officer responsibilities section of
the Lopez Island Yacht Club Handbook for additional
details or give Doug Cram (our current Rear Commo-
dore) a call.
It’s fun, it’s interesting and you’ll have lots of help. If you
spend the winters off island, you might also consider
“job sharing” with another yacht club member.
To volunteer (for yourself) or to suggest someone you
think would do a great job, contact any of your board
members.
