As I sit preparing for the upcoming season - working on schedules, putting together chamber music groups or marking bowings in the music, I can’t help but look

forward to that first Sep-tember rehearsal.

May is always difficult because there are good-byes to say. This year was no exception. Luckily, I can keep up with most of those who left on Face-book. I feel positive about our role in their success.

There are many positive influences on our musi-cians, but I know that SOGO plays a role in

their social, emotional and mental development. I have no doubt that successful young people participate in music making but I also know that the discipline and mental and emotional nature of music making expands their capabilities.

I am also aware of the success of many of our alumni as they progress through the years. It is considerable and I take great joy in watching them.

We strive to put together the most rewarding, chal-lenging and high quality programing for all of our

orchestras. Our vari-ous conductors and Teaching Artists are all dedicated to finding music and working with the musicians to get the most value out of our rehearsals and perfor-mances.

One of the ways we reach our goal of hav-ing a meaningful effect on our members is to progress them from their

first full orchestra experience in our Debut Orchestra to the exposure we give them as they play the greatest works of the orchestral repertoire in the conservatory Orchestra.

This season will be no exception. We start off with a bang with the kairos Quartet from central Washing-ton University. I have observed them and the central

Season Fourteen, cont’dWashington University Orchestra and I have a great deal of respect for that program. I look forward to the inspiration and energy that they personify.

Our March concert will feature christine Sears, a mem-ber of our cello section, performing the famous camille Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No.1 with the conservatory.

keadrin Dick, cellist (we have a lot of them!) will be playing Max Bruch’s Kol Nidre (“Our Vows”) with the Academy Orchestra. Works by Respighi, Tchaikovsky, and Smetana amongst others round out the season.

I look forward to meet-ing as many of you as I can in the upcoming months and working with our young people to introduce them to all of this great art!
