Bear Lakes Country Club is one of the premier golf venues in Palm Beach County. Two distinctive and exclusive, 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature courses offer exceptional play, for both the recreational and competitive golfer. The world-class design of each course offers its own array of challenges and rewards. In 2005, the Lakes course within the Bear Lakes Country Club was voted by Golf Digest as one of the top ten remodeled courses in the

United States. Bear Lakes hosted the 1995, 2001, and 2009 PGA TOUR Qualifying School where such players as Boo Weekly, Rickie Fowler, and Troy Merritt have earned their PGA TOUR cards.

In addition to the exciting golf action, this tournament will bring economic benefits to the local community. Golfers and their caddies, family, and friends will stay in Palm Beach County for a week. This will provide a boost in revenues for local restaurants, retail outlets and hotels during the month of September, which is traditionally the slowest month of the year for business. Additionally, hosting the Web.com Tour will boost Palm Beach County’s reputation as Florida’s Golf Capital.

Complete details for the Web.com Qualifying Tournaments can be found in the Web.com Tour at www.PGATOUR.COM/WEBCOM

College football returns to Palm Beach County for the third consecutive year, when Florida Atlantic University (FAU) kicks off its 2013 football season.

This year will also represent FAU’s inaugural season as a member of Conference USA. Conference USA announced its 14-team alignment for the 2013 football season, which will feature seven teams in both the East and West Divisions, with each team playing eight conference games, along with four non-league contests. Each university will play each team in its division once, while playing two cross-over opponents from the opposite division.

FAU will join East Carolina University, Florida International University, Marshall University, Middle Tennessee State University, Southern Mississippi and Alabama-Birmingham in the East Division, while Louisiana Tech, University of North Texas, Rice University, Tulane University, University of Tulsa, Texas El Paso University and University of Texas – San Antonio make up the West Division. Conference USA Commissioner, Britton Banowsky said, “Florida Atlantic University is a rising star, a dynamic and growing university in a wonderful place. They are a great fit and we are so pleased to have them on board next season.” Pat Chun, FAU Director of Athletics, remarked, “This is a bold and decisive step for our entire athletic program. Conference USA will bring forth new challenges, opportunities and expectations. We will continue to build our athletic program to represent Florida Atlantic University on the highest of levels.”

FAU will play its first game at the University Miami, which represents the first ever matchup between the Owls and the Hurricanes. The first home game at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton takes place on September 21, when the Owls host Middle Tennessee. FAU Stadium will host 5 games in 2013, including the Owl’s season finale against Florida International University on November 30th. Conference USA’s national television partners are Fox Sports Media Group and CBS Sports Network for regular season games. The league’s ninth annual Championship Game, pitting the champions of the East and West Divisions, is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 and will be televised by ESPN or ESPN 2.

The USA Netball Association (USANA) is partnering with the Florida Netball Association and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission to host the 2013 USA National Netball Championships on September 8th at the Palm Beach County Boys & Girls Club – Florence De George Club in West Palm Beach. Netball is one of the most popular sports for women on a global basis. The National Netball Championships is an invitational for national and international netball clubs, which will crown a national champion in several divisions. The age groups include 21u and 16u for women and an open age group for men. Games will begin at 8:30am and will culminate with a championship celebration at approximately 3:00pm.

The National Netball Championships will take place in Palm Beach County for the second consecutive year. Palm Beach County is the only destination in Florida to host the premier event on the USA Netball Association’s calendar in successive years. Prior to Palm Beach County, the event has taken place in Queens, NY, Boston, MA, Orange, NJ, Hartford, CT, Bronx, NY, Atlanta, GA and Seattle, WA. USANA President, Natalie Moodie, states “The support of the Palm Beach County Sports Commission and

the use of the magnificent gym at the Florence De George Boys & Girls Club are integral to the success of this tournament. Palm Beach County is a great supporter of Netball as witnessed by the support shown by the City of Delray Beach during last year’s Nationals. If you’ve never heard of Netball, then we invite you to come and find out about the most widely played women’s team sport in the world. Netball’s popularity at the recent Kids Fitness Festival shows that our exciting, vibrant sport has an exciting future”.

Teams from across the nation are expected to compete, including players from New York, Texas, Massachusetts, Indiana, Illinois, Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida. The USA National Team will also be on display as its members play for their respective clubs. “The USANA will use the tournament to identify potential talent for the United States National

Team, which will compete in the World Championships”, Carole Hokrein, State Coach for Florida Netball, remarked. “The support for this event shown by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission has proved invaluable. We expect a strong showing from

teams out of many regions and have no doubt that there will be fierce competition from the Florida teams on their home soil.

Although invented in the United States in 1891, it is considered a “new” sport in its country of origin. However, netball is a high profile, televised sport in the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Netball continues its rapid growth in the United States, Africa and Europe, as the strong lobby of Olympic inclusion builds. Netball‘s foundation is based on the sport of basketball and was founded by James Naismith, the creator of basketball. The rules of netball parallel basketball in many ways. The first netball game was played in England in 1895, and it has grown across the globe over the last century. Today, the sport is played by 20 million people in more than 70 countries.

Hosting the National Netball Championships attracts the eyes on the international sports community and cements Palm Beach County’s stature as an elite sports destination. This event enhances Palm Beach County’s portfolio of events and demonstrates it capability of hosting a diverse collection of events. In addition to the excitement created by this international sport, the National Netball Championships will bring a surge of new dollars to Palm Beach County. Hundreds of athletes will travel to Palm Beach County, filling up hotel rooms and generating revenue for restaurants, retail outlets, and businesses during September, a traditionally slow month for tourism.

Don’t miss the opportunity to watch one of the most popular international sports. Doors will open at Palm Beach County Boys & Girls Club – Florence De George Club at 8:30am on September 8th.

The Lou Groza Award is pleased to announce famed NFL and Notre Dame kicker, John Carney, as the keynote speaker for the 22nd Annual Lou Groza Award Banquet. The event will be held on December 10, 2013 at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. The night is highlighted by honoring the three finalists for the prestigious Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award.

Carney’s kicking career began in Palm Beach County at Cardinal Newman High School. After an illustrious high school football career, Carney became one of the most admired kickers to play for the University of Notre Dame. After making 51 field goals during his college career, Sports Illustrated would go on to name

Carney as the kicker on its Notre Dame All Time Team. Carney’s 23-year pro career saw him go 473-for-574 on field goals and 625-for-635 on extra points. His 2,062 career points are the 4th most in NFL history, as are his 473 field goals. He is the NFL’s all-time leader with 29

career games of four or more field goals.

Carney will also present the Groza Trophy to the season’s best kicker, as voted by a panel of FBS coaches and

SIDs, along with national and regional football writers, and past Groza winners. The winner will be announced by Carney live on ESPN during the Home Depot College Football Awards on December 12.
