Hello FTR Family,

The summer has come and gone and racing is soon to begin. Like many of you, I

still have stuff to get ready. I have wheel bearings to put on. I need some gear. There are a couple of things I would like to do to

my rig. Will it all get done before the first Hare Scrambles? We will have to see. Nevertheless,

ready or not, the FTR race

season is here! By the way,

just in case you are unaware, it’s gong be

bloody hot so be prepared.

I hope you were able to have a wonderful

summer. Mine went by so fast I don’t think I had

time to enjoy it. We were able

to see some of our family and

go on a short vacation. Yes,

we are blessed to have been able

to experience that, however,

like most, I want more. Too bad...

It’s over.

Were you able to make it to the

Annual FTR Awards Banquet?

We were in a totally different venue and I think I like it! The team that put the event

together did a great job. Kudos to the many volunteers! Also, the food was fantastic! Thank

you for allowing me to play a little part in the evening’s festivities. It is always a great time

to rekindle those racing fires just before the season begins! Again, thank you to the men

and women for their hard work that helped to make the banquet a blast!

Another question, did you make it to opening event of the FTR season? Yes, the first FTR

event has already taken place. Big Scrub Trail Riders hosted the Lochloosa Enduro. What

surprised me the most about that Sunday morning, were the number of Hare Scrambles

riders who had signed up. Many had never even ridden an Enduro. To those individuals, let me say, good for you for expanding your

riding horizons! I’m sure it was not easy, but you did it and that is more than most will ever

do. As a self-appointed ambassador for Big Scrub Trail Riders, thank you for supporting

the event.

This past Sunday at our home church (First Baptist Church of Ponte Vedra Beach) we had

Off-Road Racing Ministry’s Sunday. I want to thank those who came, brought their bikes,

and had lunch with us. It was great. The church family thoroughly enjoys seeing all the bikes

in the church building and visiting with all the racers. If you would like to attend next year, let

me know. It is open to everyone. Meanwhile, I look forward to seeing you soon out there on

the line!

Editor’s BeatT he first time is always exciting, and this year’s banquet at the

Daytona Beach Ocean Center will definitely be unforgettable! I don’t think we could have packed any more people into the vendor area, and the same could be said about the dining hall! We sold out of dinner tickets and the food was better than I expected; it’s hard to find something to complain about! Now, by the time you read this, you should know the first Hare Scrambles was postponed, and you should also know that the FTR website is the ONLY official source of FTR information, which

means Facebook and the FTR forum, while informative, could be incorrect, so stay tuned to

floridatrailriders.org. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this month’s feature on the Chambers family. I interview all four members, which is something I’ve never done for an interview before. I laughed and I cried and learned a lot about this team of champions - all four won their Hare Scrambles class this past season! I was doubly impressed by how polite each of them were. It made me even more proud to be a member of this family we call FTR. As Emma Chambers said, “Ride hard and have fun.” - JS

In the absence of the Secretary who was attending to Awards Banquet preparations, Jack Terrell agreed to keep the meeting minutes.

old Business: Motion made by Mike Belle, seconded by Gary Wyatt, to approve the minutes of the previous Board of Directors meeting. Passed by unanimous vote.

Motion made by Gary Wyatt, seconded by Mike Belle, to approve the proposal (identified as Proposal #1) to change Constitution of Florida Trail Riders, Article XIV, Section E, Sanctions. The change addresses the allowable number of Hare Scrambles events and the Hare Scrambles benefit. Passed by unanimous vote.

Motion made by Gary Wyatt, seconded by Mike Belle, to approve the proposal (identified as Proposal #2) to change Constitution of Florida Trail Riders, Article XV Bylaws, Chapter III, General Rules, Section J, Fees. The change addresses when sanction fees must be paid. Passed by unanimous vote.

A SADRA representative provided an update of the vandalism incident at the SADRA Hare Scrambles. It was reported that two of the individuals involved had not responded to phone calls and letters from SADRA, and that financial restitution had not been received from those individuals. A motion was made by Kevin Vaughan, seconded by Jack Terrell, to recommend to the Executive Committee that unless restitution was received by the end of the day today, the two individuals and their parents be expelled from FTR until such time as financial restitution was received by SADRA. Passed by unanimous vote.

new Business: Motocross schedule for 2013-2014 was presented by Rick Dreggors (MX Chair) and Sean Fitzgerald (MX Referee/Scorekeeper). The schedule proposes 10 events – 5 are combined with FL/GA series events. The series expects to attract an average of 150 to 200 entries per event. The Board of Directors commended both Rick and Sean on all the hard work that they have put into rejuvenating the MX series. Motion made by Rick Dreggors, seconded by Bill Jenkins, to approve the MX schedule as presented. Passed by unanimous vote.

Motion made by Rick Dreggors, seconded by Bill Jenkins, to approve the proposal to change Chapter X Motocross Scoring, B. Championship Points System, Paragraph 1 (page 28) which addresses basis of calculating year end awards. Passed by unanimous vote. (See MX proposals)

Motion made by Rick Dreggors, seconded by Mike Belle, to approve the proposal to change Chapter XI Motocross, Section 7, Race Flags (pages 28-29) which addresses Red Cross flag rules. Passed by unanimous vote.

Motion made by Rick Dreggors, seconded by Bill Jenkins, to approve the proposal to change Chapter III D, Rider Classification, and Chapter XII Motocross Championship Series Classes which addresses definitions and requirements of motocross classes. Passed by unanimous vote.

Motion made by Jeremy Powell, seconded by Jack Terrell, to approve a proposal to establish an Enduro scoring head tax in accordance with Chapter I, Constitution of the Florida Trail Riders, Article XV, Bylaws, Section III, Dues Sanction Fees and Head Tax. (See Enduro proposal on following pages)The proposal establishes a $2 per rider Enduro scoring head tax for all in-state Enduros. The head tax will be used for electronic scoring of Enduros, as well as cost of providing, maintaining and transporting the Enduro scoring trailer. Motion failed by unanimous vote.

Following the vote Jack Terrell asked that the minutes include the observation that FTR has continually failed to address this matter in a financially responsible manner, and that by the end of the 2013-2014 season, the Enduro series must take action to assume financial responsibility for costs incurred to provide electronic scoring of Enduros.

Motion to adjourn was made by Mike Belle, seconded by Bill Jenkins, and was approved by unanimous vote at 10:15 a.m.

MX proposalsThe following amendments and/or changes to the 2012-2013 Rulebook (Rulebook) have been approved for publication and consideration by the 2012-2013 MX Committee in accordance to any and all requirements found inthe Rulebook.

1: Championship Points System (Year End Awards) * There is a conflict in the rulebook between what is found under General Rules and Motocross Scoring. Chapter III General Rules (from pg 12) H. Year-End Awards: 2. Winners for the Year: a. Total points will be determined by the best combined scores in 70% of the events sanctioned by FTR. Rounding will be done to the nearest whole number with 0.50 being rounded up. In addition, Motocross total points would be determined by the best scores in 80% of the events

sanctioned by FTR. Rounding will be done to the nearest whole number also. To qualify for year-end awards in the FTR Series, a rider must enter at least 50% of the sanctioned events. B. Championship Points System: Chapter X Motocross Scoring Page 281. Year end overall class standings will be based on 70% of the series events. For example; If the FTR Motocross Championship Series is 10 events, then the riders best 7 races are counted. Recommended Change: Modify to read as follows: Chapter X Motocross Scoring B. Championship Points System:1. Year end award will be based on 80% of the series events. For Example: If the FTR Motocross Championship Series is 10 events, then the best 8 races are counted.

2: Championship Points System (Double Points Round/ 5 participant points) a. Chapter X, B, 3 page 28 reads as follows:3. The FTR Motocross Championship Series will consist of one double points event to be announced at the last scheduled event of the season. It will be announced at the rider’s meeting. In addition, each rider will be awarded five (5) points for each race in which a rider participates as long as one gate start was completed. Participation points will be added to the year end calculations even if competition points are dropped.

Recommended Change: Modify to read as follows:3. The FTR Motocross Championship Series may include double point rounds. Double Point Round(s) will be identified on the series schedule prior to Round 1. In addition, each rider will be awarded five (5) points for each race in which the rider is signed up and paid their entry fees. The rider must be present at sign up on the day of the event.

3: Championship Points System (Points Awarded) a. Chapter X,B,4 page 28 reads as follows:4. As an event consists of two moto’s, a rider will be awarded one-half total points if he/she finishes only one moto. The rider will receive no points if he/she does not start or does not finish either moto.

Recommended Change: Modify to read as follows:4. A rider who has signed up for the event but is unable to start (DNS) or finish (DNF) a moto will be awarded last place points for that moto. For Example: Johnny has signed up for a class with a total of 10 riders. If Johnny has a DNS or DNF in either or both motos, he will be awarded 10th place points for each DNF/DNS. In the event multiple riders in a moto receive a DNF/DNS they shall be scored with DNF ahead of DNS. For Example: A 10 rider moto has one DNF and one DNS the DNF rider will receive 9th place points while the DNS rider will receive 10th place points. Multiple riders with DNF/DNS finishes in a moto will each receive the same points as last. For Example: A 10 rider moto has 2 riders who receive a DNF. Both riders will receive 10th place points.

4: Advancement Point System a. Chapter X, C 1-3, page 28 reads as followsC. Advancement Point System: 1. The Advancement point system will award advancement points based on the riders performance in their class. Advancement points will be awarded based on overall event results (not per moto) as follows: 1st place 10 advancement points 2nd place 5 advancement points 3rd place 4 advancement points 4th place 3 advancement points 5th place 2 advancement points When fewer than 6 rider compete in a class this schedule will be modified to read: 1st place 5 advancement points 2nd place 3 advancement points 3rd place 2 advancement points 4th place 1 advancement point 5th place 0 advancement points 2. When a total of 45 points for B riders or 35 points for C riders are accrued, the rider is promoted to the next higher division. If the points are accrued before 50% of the MX series season events, the rider will be promoted to next higher class immediately. When the points are accrued after half of the events, the rider will remain in the same class until the end of the competition season and the promotion would take effect at the start of the next competition season. 3. Advancement points will be carried only for the rider’s previous ten events. The personal ten (10) events will carry from the previous years first race. This system will advance riders based on present performance, not an accumulation of past performances.

Recommended Change: Modify to read as follows:C. Rider Advancement 1. If an FTR member completely dominates a class, the Motocross Committee may, through majority vote, elect to advance a rider to the next higher class.2. Riders who are advanced by the Motocross Committee during the competition year and riders who promote themselves, will take 90% of their accumulated points to the higher class. A rider cannot improve their class standing through advancement.

5: Chapter XI Promoters/Track Owner Responsibilities (Tech Inspection) a. Chapter XI, 7, page 28 reads as follows:6. Tech Inspection will be required for each competition motorcycle before it will be allowed to practice. Each motorcycle should have a visible identifier that indicates it has passed tech inspection. Recommended Change: Modify to read as follows:6. A Tech Inspector will provide a general inspection for obvious safety issues before and/or during staging of the first round of practice. Any rider with a violation on his motorcycle will be given the option to run the one lap late practice, providing the repair is made prior to the conclusion of practice. The rider may be prevented from completing practice if the tech inspector feels the violation puts the rider or others at risk of injury.

6: Chapter XI Promoters/Track Owner Responsibilities (Race Flags) a. Chapter XI, 7, page 28-29 provides list of flags with description

Recommended Change: Add line item as follows:h. The Medic Flag is White with Red Cross and warns you of danger. A rider is down on or near the track and is receiving medical attention. Proceed with extreme caution, Do Not Pass, Do Not Jump.

Determined by the Board of Directors.Dues, Sanction Fees, and Head Tax may be changed at any time by majority vote of the Board of Directors at an official meeting of the Board of Directors. Constitution and Rule Change procedures in Article XIII and Article XIV shall not apply to the setting of the dollar amount of Dues, Sanction Fees, and Head Tax. Board of Directors, by majority vote at an official meeting shall have the authority to allocate dues for a specific purpose.”Given the rule above and the immediate power to make the changes, I would suggest that the proposal be accepted as written below: Note: green additions; Proposal: Create a head tax score fund allocation for in state enduros at a rate of $2.00 per rider. report of Officers: The President provided an overview of FTR activities during the 2012-2013 season. The Vice President was not present. In his absence Jack Terrell provided an update of legislative accomplishments and status of Florida OHV grant program. Due to recommendations of the Florida OHV Advisory Committee, and subsequent meetings with Florida Forest Service managers and the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services (Adam Putnam), the department supported, and the Florida Legislature appropriated funds to revive the Florida OHV grant program during the 2013-2014 fiscal year. The first round of projects have been awarded and a second round of grants are scheduled for September.

The treasurer was not present. In his absence the President passed out a package of financial reports to attendees and provided an overview of FTR’s financial operations. The secretary Report was waived.The enduro Chair provided an overview of the 2012-2013 enduro season and plans for the 2013-2014 season. Rules for the C class have been modified to attract new riders to the series, and a King of the Woods competition has been added to recognize an overall winner based on results of three selected enduros and three selected hare scrambles. Awards for the competition will be sponsored by Beach Boulevard Motorsports and KTM. FTR has provided a scoring trailer and will provide electronic scoring of all in Florida Enduro events during the 2013-2014 series. The Hare scrambles Chair reported that despite having to re-schedule several events due to wet weather and loss of the Gatorback property, a full schedule of hare scrambles was run in 2012-2013. Rider turnout has held steady this season. The mX cHair and Referee reported on plans for the ten event 2013-2014 MX season. Five events are scheduled combined with FL/GA series events. The Waldo track has been closed and the Bithlo track has been added.

The President opened the sealed bids for the sale of the old FTR Hare Scrambles scoring trailer. Two bids were received – one from CFTR and one from PBTTR. The $1550 CFTR bid was the highest bid. The President announced that the trailer would be sold to CFTR upon receipt of payment.

Motion to adjourn was made by Mike Belle, seconded by Bill Jenkins, and was approved by unanimous vote at 11:30 a.m.

Well, that was me back in May. As the banquet neared, I was overwhelmed to say the least

but not by the amount of time and effort it took; I was overwhelmed by the gratitude and graciousness of all the people and vendors I contacted. When I called Keith Walpole at Walpole Trucking, Inc., he said, “Whatever you need, I’m in.” We sent out mass emails and letters to vendors since I hear the guys in the shop say all the time, “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.” One of the first responses was from Jason at Central Florida PowerSports with a $100 gift card donation and it just kept rolling in after that. Shane Watts from Dirtwise Riding Schools posted a two-day school certificate. Donations were still coming in two days before the banquet and after the banquet as well.

I can’t thank Jon Vedas, the host of Two Wheels Only Radio Show, enough for taking the time to promote FTR as he broadcasted his show live from the banquet in the vendor room. Todd Sandoval from Palmetto Motorsports came through with the KTM bags and a host of

prizes and, with that not being enough, Todd helped to raise purse for the three sets of gear from BTO Sports team; Andrew Short, Matt Goerke and Michael Bryne, which were part of the silent auction for the FTR Scholarship fund. Georgia Practice Facility provided a certificate as part of the silent auction, plus we had jerseys from Charlie Mullins, Destry Abbott, Josh Strang and Takeshi Koikeda. The silent auction items raised over $700.

New this year were the FTR Champions trading card project! What can I say but kudos to Dave Dekmar at Dekmar3d.com! He did a fantastic job and the cards were a hit and he

also designed the bike display photos. If you missed out on the trading cards, the first run will not be printed again, so be ready next year. Are you going to have your own trading card? Big thanks to Jack O’Neill at Action Kawasaki Yamaha, Randy Faul and Lendon Smith from Seat Concepts for picking up the tab for the cards. The cards brought in more than $900 to the scholarship fund so thank you for raising the bar.

The FTR clubs are amazing. Most clubs not only sent in money for the scholarship fund but they also pitched in to help with the banquet vendor area activities. This effort provided more dollars toward the scholarship fund. Central Florida Trail Riders provided race entries that were raffled. Also, Palm Beach Track & Trail, Suncoast Trail Blazers and Sarasota Area Dirt Riders Association gave extra donations to help make the RC cars from High Fly Hobbies of Daytona a reality. We also received a donation from McLeod Land Services on behalf of Colton McLeod to provide the fourth car. Big thanks go out to Jerry and Ryan Curtis, Lynwood and Jimmy Ansley and Dave and Aaron Dekmar who now know more about the Traxxas Rustler’s than they want to know. If you need help with your front end, Tim Myers was on hand to set caster and camber once the arms were found in the room!

You missed out if you did not make it by to see the vender room; the displays were awesome! It was tight quarters but we made do with the room we had. I would like to thank all who set up a display to make this room ROCK! We had Cary Hunt promoting Speed Energy Drinks, Mark Mitchell from Spaceport Cycles who actually sold a bike! The TF Suspension crew hosted the corner spot with Action Kawasaki Yamaha and Seat Concepts. Ronnie Hames from HBD Motografx displayed his graphics. Kurt Lucas of FloridaDirtBike.net sold his newly designed T-shirts and Jon Vedas of Two Wheels Only radio show setup in front of the FTR MX podium. As you continued on around the room, we slid in the FTR banquet ticket pickup table and the banquet T-shirt sales. With that we need to give a big shout out to Scott at East Coast Screenprinting for donating the banquet T-shirts, which provided more than $700 to the scholarship fund - a big thank you to Jenni Lamb for holding that fort down along with the bike raffle. Dave Wagner from Cycle Sports Center made the back corner the hot spot with a great setup. Bobby and Terry from Pro-Action Suspension had it going on with a shim count contest; it’s been told that Bobby counts shims to sleep at night. Andy from Volusia Motorsports was set up right next to the RC car track so he had a great view of the racing going on over there and could still keep an eye on the Scott Mountain bike between ducking cars flying off the track. Next over, Tammy Wilson promoted the new Body by Vi with a rocking Visalus display and Todd Sandoval of Palmetto Motorsports displayed the 2014

In the middle of the room we had AAA South, Marisa from Tupperware with a colorful display and Jenny Parsons with Rodan & Fields Dermatologists displaying the great skin products they have to offer. The inner circle provided Amp Energy a little taste testing under a cool looking tent. Jessica Childs for Thirty-One bags and Scentsy displayed the nice, big black tote with FTR embroidered on it and her Scentsy candle products. Next was Dave from MSKI Racing promoting the AdvoCare products and finally the ladies, Teresa Faul, Diana O’Neill, Janine Belle and Vicki Arnold - I owe them big time! They held down the quilt raffles, silent auctions and selling the FTR champions trading cards.

Nic Frey and Kurt Lucas! What can I say about these guys? Young, energetic and full of fun! Thanks so much for keeping the activities going. I think they were as overwhelmed as I was! can clean up for a classy and fun evening together. It was so wonderful to see and meet so many of the series’ sponsors who make racing possible in the vendor area prior to the banquet and it was very special being able to see my bike

along with the other series champions lining the hall of the Ocean Center.

Daytona was a fabulous place to have the banquet. There was so much to do locally and the Ocean Center was a perfect

venue for the evening. In between the morning activities and the banquet dinner for example, a few of us walked over to

play putt-putt golf (and I decided to stick to motocross!) I heard of others going to the beach, some going to the water park and others just relaxing before the evening’s events in

their hotels. The banquet committee, too, did an awesome job making

the evening special for our giant family. It was obvious how much time, effort and planning went into the program and

it was executed beautifully. Although organizing such a huge event must take an awesome amount of dedication—the

program went so smooth that it felt natural. The 2012-2013 FTR Banquet was an incredible time with our

offroad family and a good reminder of why we all race the series: because it is such a family centered organization. I am

thankful to be a part of FTR and so thankful for everyone’s efforts this year, not only with the banquet, but also for

keeping FTR alive. I am so glad I was able to see so much of my family and I am already looking forward to next year! -

There is something truly special about

the relationships that you form at the motocross track. It’s a bond

unlike any other. You share an appreciation for adrenaline, risk,

precision, competition, passion and dirt. Looking forward to the

FTR Banquet was like getting ready for a huge family reunion. There is the family that you are

really close with, like your aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, perhaps

grandparents, who you see and communicate with on a more

regular basis. Those individuals are analogous to the people

who you have competed against throughout the whole season. They are the racers who you

pitted next to for the weekend or lined up with at the start.

At family reunions, too, you always have the extended family you hear from once and a while but

never get to see. The ones you talk to or hear about when you get together with other family but you don’t have

the opportunity to cross paths with often enough. This kind of family may be similar to our fellow racers we saw

at the track but didn’t necessarily get to race against or catch up with

during the weekends of racing. Then, there is the family that you didn’t even know you had. I come

from a very large family on my dad’s side, and there are cousins I have

never met, have never heard of and didn’t even know existed until the family reunions. This is something

special about the FTR banquet—we have the opportunity to meet a lot

of our unknown distant family: for example, Hare Scrambles racers who

didn’t attend any motocross races and vice versa. It was an opportunity

to learn about others and meet new people yet, at the heart of it all, we

still all have the same passion for offroad racing competition and the

smell of race fuel. I think the social dynamics in play

within the Florida Trail Riders organization is simply amazing. It

provides an opportunity to meet people from all over the state

and region and it gives you the opportunity to interact with unique

people from other disciplines of offroad racing that you would

otherwise never have the chance to meet.

I value my family very highly. They have always provided a solid

foundation for my life. As much as my family means to me, the weekend of the banquet had a schedule conflict: my real family reunion. As much as I wanted to be in attendance, I had

already made the commitment to my other family, my FTR family,

almost a year ago when I decided to race the motocross series…needless to say, I went to the banquet! I love my family and I love my motocross

family. It just means I will be making some serious family time over my

Christmas holiday! The banquet was nothing short of

amazing. FTR did a phenomenal job of organizing an event where all of

us normally dirty and sweaty racers continued on next page

o u t frontEditor’s note: I have seen the Chambers family around the pits since I started racing FTR; Kerri and Jason both come from FTR families and I have watched their two children, Emma and Jack, grow up through the ranks of the PeeWee and Mini classes. (I’ve raced against Kerri and her sister, Jenni Lamb, ever since I was bumped to the Women A class in the early 2000s - I still can’t beat either of them!) This past Hare Scrambles season, the Chambers family accomplished a feat that few families dare to attempt: all four captured their class championship. And, not only that, they were winning from the beginning: at the first Hare Scrambles in Bartow, they each took home their first win of the season. The Chambers family brings truth to the saying: the family that races together, wins together. JS: Jack, you had a remarkable season in 65A, winning 10 of the 12 races (he finished second in the other two.) How does it feel to be a family of champions?Jack: It’s awesome. We were kind of pushing it on my mom at the end. We had all won our season; we had wrapped it up early and my mom was the only one that didn’t so my dad didn’t race to help her if anything happened to her bike he could get it fixed or whatever happened. We had to keep in touch with her so we put the pitboard out. Normally my mom and dad are racing at the same time so he stayed on the sidelines and cheered her on.Usually it’s just you out there cheering on your parents?Jack: Usually I’m out there with Jesse (Ansley) and Gage (Hunter) and anybody we know, we give everybody pitboards usually. How was the season for you? Did you and Gage battle a lot in the 65A class? Jack: He was doing really good at the beginning and we went back and forth a lot and then he went to 85 (Mini A) and I was kind of

disappointed about that. I didn’t wanna win that way.Were there any challenges left for you? Jack: My chain fell off and I had to put it back on...I think it was the chain guide; it kept getting bent. At one race it happened and luckily my dad told me and showed me how to do it so I just flipped my bike over and bent the chain guide back up and took off.Wow. Weren’t you tired?Jack: Yea, I think that was the second or third lap that that happened.That’s incredible. What have you been doing this summer? Jack: This past couple weeks, we’ve been riding a lot. Jesse’s came over. Gage came over. I went with Gage a week and Jesse a couple days. I like to train with them and hangout.And now you’re moving up to Mini A with them? Jack: Yea, I rode the last two races and I got third the second to last one and, the last race, I got second behind Jesse. It’s gonna be a lot tougher

this year because more people are moving up from (Mini) B and me and Gage are 10 years old and Jesse’s 13, so he’ll move out next year after this season.Do you like the 85? Is it faster? Jack: Usually when the track is rough, it’s not, but when the track is rough, it goes over it a lot easier. I like the faster, more open races but I like training in the woods.That’s cool. Do you watch any of the pros?Jack: Sometimes I just watch their techniques. My dad usually helps me a lot. He learned it by them and tells me how to do logs or tells me how to load my front suspension up and pop over it and stuff like that. We’ve been working on a lot of corner speed because that’s where you win races. You sound so wise. What are you looking forward to next season? Jack: Hopefully, I can get a couple firsts. I’ve got my work cut out for me.

Who are your sponsors?Jack: TF Racing, HBD, my mom, dad and FTR for giving me every weekend to ride.

Emma also dominated the Mini Girls class winning the first nine races and finishing second three times before moving up to Mini B for the last three races, taking two thirds and a second.

JS: Emma, congratulations on your season and also for being a family of champions! How does it feel?Emma: It makes me feel good because we probably won’t be able to all win again. It was difficult.

How about your season?Emma: Pretty easy at the beginning. I won the first nine and I let my guard down a little. Then Holly Langford won the last three.

Were there any challenges for you?Emma: I was disappointed that I was getting second at the last three.What was your favorite track?Emma: Every track was my favorite. Bartow mostly though; I love it.

Why?Emma: Probably because all the ups and downs and the technical stuff.

How do you prepare for the races? Do you train or anything?Emma: Well, I have a track in my backyard that I ride on. It’s mostly a smooth motocross track. I do soccer and basketball at my school, and I ride my bicycle.

Are you good at the other sports? Emma: I guess.Well, you’re pretty tall?Emma: Yea, I’m like 5’4, 5’5. What are you looking forward to next year? You’re moving up a class?Emma: Yea, I’m going to race Junior Girls.On the same bike?Emma: We’re gonna put big wheels on it and a bigger motor.Oh, that’s cool. Have you rode any bigger bikes yet?Emma: I’ve rode my mom’s 200 but I’m not tall enough to ride it. I can’t touch on it. I was hoping to ride my mom’s 200 that she got. She got a new 200 - an electric start - my dad said if I could crank it, I could ride it, but he forgot about the electric start.That’s funny. Do you look up to any pro racers? Emma: Ryan Dungey. He’s a smooth rider and he rides KTM, and he’s good looking, too.What are you looking forward to next year? Emma: We wanted to ride Enduros but we might just do Hare Scrambles and Motocross.

Oh, you like Enduros? Emma: Yea, I love tight woods.Awesome. Who are your sponsors?Emma: TF Racing, My mom and dad and HBD Motografx.

Kerri rounded out an impressive Women A season with eight wins and four top 5 finishes (all while nursing an injured shoulder, which she had operated on the day after our interview.) JS: Tell me what happened to your shoulder?Kerri: I found out in September that I had arthritis in my shoulder and the doctor wanted to do surgery on it but I didn’t really trust that diagnosis so I went back in January and they did an MRI and that’s when they found the torn rotator cuff and the bone spurs and the arthritis and (I needed) surgery and he said, “You don’t have to do it today or this month,” and I said, “Well that’s good because I need to finish the season - I was thinking about not finishing the season but the kids put a lot of pressure on me...because, at that point, I think that was race 6, Emma was ahead of the game; she was doing well. Jack was doing well so they knew they were going to win. And Jason, he pretty much thought he would, so they were all pressuring me to finish the racing season, and the reason I didn’t do it as soon as they got out of school was because I didn’t want to mess the kids’ summer up. I wanted to have fun with them and take them places and we had some vacations

lined up and I didn’t want to mess that up by having surgery so three days after they go back to school was when I planned my surgery. That’s crazy. How were you even able to finish the season?Kerri: It’s not that bad. It doesn’t hurt really bad, I just cant do things like I used to do. I can’t pick up heavy stuff. I cant pick up, like, a package of Gatorade; it hurts so bad.How was it on the bike?Kerri: I had some trouble in the cold races because the arthritis in my shoulder was really bugging me but...it was, what, maybe two races a month? So I really just put my mind on other stuff and didn’t worry about the pain; I just kind of tried to keep going. The bike didn’t seem to bother me, racing with my shoulder but, like, getting done and picking up something heavy off the ground, that bothered me. It was really weird. Jason said that’s because I really wanted to race the motorcycle. I don’t know. I think your pain is only allowed when you allow it. That’s probably true. How long have you been racing, anyway?Kerri: I have been racing for 23 years. I’m 38 and I was 15 when I started racing. I was younger when I started riding but, when I was young, they didn’t

really have any Girls classes and they just started doing Minis as I got older so the first class I went into was Women B. Do you think you’re faster now than ever?Kerri: I think that I’ve definitely had faster years. I think I’m just very consistent and I stay at a consistently fast speed so I don’t crash a lot except at the very end of the season when I was psyched-out knowing I had to win to be done with the racing season so I didn’t have to race on Mother’s Day.I was like, “I’m not racing on Mother’s Day,” so I was determined to win up at River City and I crashed pretty hard up there but typically I don’t crash a lot in probably a few years.

So, maybe now you’re smarter than ever?Kerri: Yea, I’m able to just keep a really consistent, fast speed is the

kind of name of my game. I try not to crash out and don’t go too crazy, be calm because it’s a long two hours out there.

What’s your best memory of last season?Kerri: I guess it was the last race when I won it.It was a good feeling to have it done with. I crashed twice; one of them was caught on film by Robin Arnold and I had quite a good get off of my bike and I thought I was done and I had just passed Lacey (Nordle) probably about three minutes before that so I was scared, you know, she’s going to pass me back and then I was going to have to race the last race - all this stuff was going through my mind and, at the time, I just didn’t want to get off the ground and I made myself: “You gotta get up; you gotta do it.” So I guess that was probably my favorite race because I knew that determination, knowing that I wanted to get it over with and done, that kind of forced me to get up off my butt after I had a really hard fall and make me finish and win.That was probably my favorite. By no means did I love the course, though. It was just more of my race there.

What was your favorite course?Kerri: I didn’t race ours so I cant say Sunrunners like my kids did. Believe it or not, I actually liked the Nature Coast (Dade City) race. I used to be really all about woods but, I don’t know, I enjoyed the fast pastures of that race this time. Again that was another good race because Lacey and I were neck-and-neck in the first two laps so that was a fun race to be that close to each other and pull it out and win it. I enjoyed the fast speeds and the good oak hammock.Do you have to practice anything in the offseason?Kerri: No, I am a really bad role model as far as that goes because I don’t ride unless I’m racing. I don’t practice.

So, you just save it all up for the race? That’s smart!Kerri: Jason would love for me to practice. He sees a lot of things that he would like for me to change but 23 years of the same thing is kind of hard for me to change; I don’t buy into it.

It’s obviously working?Kerri: Yes, I know. I guess it’s me having so many years experience that I’m just lucky I don’t have to. The only time I like to ride when I’m not racing is when we go to North Carolina. Other than that, I don’t really ride much else.

How did you go from Women B to A? Did you pick it up pretty fast back then?Kerri: No. Cheryl Myers and Beth Rewis were like the fastest in the class at the time so it took me a long time to go the speed of the A riders. It took a few years in A before I really caught up to their speed.

How did you do it?Kerri: Just being able to start with them and kind of learn from watching them ride. When you‘re young, you crash a lot more, so I guess the older and wiser I got, sometimes you have to slow down to go faster - that’s, like, my favorite thing to say to Jack. When you’re young, your body can take all those crashes and the older you get, you kind of realize you don’t want to be on the ground anymore and it helps; it makes a difference. When you’re younger, that’s a really hard philosophy to believe in but now, being 38, it’s really hard to go faster and crash out. It’s a hard race on your body and having the responsibilities, too. You don’t want to take the risk anymore but motorcycles are so familiar to me, being around it my whole life, that I don’t really consider it much of a risk.

Somewhere along the way you met Jason?Kerri: We met the first time when he came to help out at a race at Reddick and my car was too small to go through the mud on the way into the track so he asked me if I wanted a ride and, when I got in his truck, he was very nervous and, when he talks nervous, he has a really thick accent - that country accent - and he came off as a total country bumpkin. That was my first impression and I got over to my mom’s camper and they were like, “Oh my gosh! Jason Chambers; he’s so fast! You got in a car with him!” She was really excited about it and I was like, “Mom, he’s a redneck,” so I wasn’t that interested and then, a year later, at the banquet he asked me to dance and, the next week, he came up to my apartment and cooked me dinner and we have been together ever since. Wow.Kerri: Yea, Jack Huffman (late FTR magazine editor) actually told Jason to ask me to dance at the banquet and so that is why we named (our son) Jack, not just for my dad (Jack Terrell) but because of Jack and he passed away right after Jason and I got engaged - from the time we met, we were married 11 months later. My goodness, I have tears in my eyes!Kerri: I love that story because FTR was such a big part of my life and I knew who he was but I wasn’t

that interested. I thought it was cool that he was an A rider but he’s older than me by 5 years so, when I was younger, I wasn’t that interested but then we met when I was 21 and it wasn’t such a big age difference anymore, and I became interested.

And along came Emma? How did riding come about for her?Kerri: They both really naturally wanted to do it because we were always there. I never wanted mine and Jason’s interests to completely influence them. I wanted them to do what they wanted to do so we did the soccer thing with the kids when they were younger on the weekends. She started when she was 5 and she was much more laid back riding but she has gotten really serious about it in just the last year and it really makes me proud when I see her beat the boys and gets one of the top 10 or top 30 race times. It makes me really proud of her because nothing’s ever been easy for her; she’s always struggled and things come in a difficult way, not like Jack, and she had to work really hard to get where she is. She’s very excited about it and she really loves it so, for her, that’s how it all came about. She was interested when she first started but she was just not as aggressive and then she told me over a year ago, she said, “I want to come to Women A and beat you,” so her goal is to beat me. I think it’s going to be very easy for her to obtain that goal. Watching her ride, I know she will definitely beat me.

And Jack?Kerri: Jack has been interested in motorcycles since he could talk. He never watched cartoons; he always watched Travis Pastrana videos from the time he was 2 years old. We came in his room one time and he was, like, 3 and he had put an instructional video on how to put a KTM together in his DVD player and we were like, “Can you believe he’s watching that? That’s so boring!” Well, he liked it. He’s just naturally loved it since he was little.

That’s cool that you guys passed it down.Kerri: And people say, “Well it was in the blood; they didn’t have much of a choice,” and I like to think that we gave them a choice because I would never want them to feel like they had to race just because Jason and I race, but it’s so cool that our family does it and then the fact that my dad races, my sister (Jenni Lamb) races, her husband (Scott Lamb.) It makes it so much more special that we all get to spend all the race weekends together. And you’re all champions this year! Kerri: That makes it even more special because I

don’t know how much longer I’m going to be racing; it’s not so easy to heal, the older you get. I still want to race.

Do you have anyone to thank?Kerri: I would like to thank Jason for being a good mechanic and keeping four bikes going and being able to find time to do that between his busy schedule, and my parents for them opening up the FTR world to me because I feel like it’s family. I truly love FTR. It’s the best place to raise a family and to enjoy a sport that everybody can do.

Jason capped off a fine season in Senior A winning seven times and finishing second three times for a total of 10 races entered.JS: Congratulations on being a family of champions! How does it feel?Jason: We did it, but it was a struggle. I was proud of all of them for one specific reason: they didn’t quit. They didn’t give up. None of us have a quit bone in our body. We never get up. I tell my kids: “If you’re still breathing, you gotta get back to the camper somehow, you might as well just ride the rest of the trail and just finish the race unless your bike just won’t go.”That’s awesome. Jason: It’s been a good learning curve for them and I think that’s what’s going to make them probably better adults. That’s really the reason I do this. I’m blessed because Kerri loves to ride. I love to ride. I

was worried about my little girl. She’s 13 and she’s getting to that age where she’s getting her own independence but the fact that she still wants to go to the dit bike races with mom and dad, it just about brings a tear to my eye and it makes me want to work so hard to work at my job to save my money to make enough money that I can take them to the races and, to me, that’s what it’s about. When did you first hear of FTR?Jason: I first heard of FTR in 1979 at River Ranch Acres. I think it was an Enduro that my dad used to run. I raced my first race ever in Mini C in ’79 and it was like a preliminary to the Enduro on Sunday. At the time, we rode MX until it just got too expensive for them; we just couldn’t afford it. We stopped racing in ’83 or ’84 when I was about 14 but I got hooked and I don’t mean this literally but dirt bike racing is the worst drug or the best drug that I’ve ever been on in my life. I can’t get away from it! But, anyway, as soon as I got out of college, probably one of the first paychecks I got, I went straight and bought me a dirt bike and that was 1991; that was my first FTR full Hare Scrambles season 22 years ago.

Incredible. That’s the first thing I wanted to do after I finished college, too! Jason: I never quit. I don’t think I could quit if I tried. It’s just become a part of us, not only a part of me but I was lucky enough to find a woman that raced and enjoyed the same things that I did and supported at the time she didn’t really know it because she just raced and that’s what she loved to do I raced and that’s what I loved to do. They always say opposites attract but you still have to have

that one common ground and it just ended up being dirt bikes.What’s the best thing about FTR, for you?Jason: The biggest thing for me is the kids are seeing what it takes to actually put on a race. You don’t just show up, race and go home There’s people that have been racing 20 years in FTR and aren’t involved with clubs and don’t really realize – yes, they know there’s volunteers and somebody has to go out and lay out a trail but they don’t really understand from start to finish what it takes and my kids are getting that education at a young age. I hope that will teach them to appreciate it because they understand you get out of stuff what you put into it. So if you want to work hard, you’re going to be rewarded for it in one way shape or form, whether it’s working hard at the race, practicing over the summer, and making top 2 or 3 finishes at each race, or working hard getting a college degree, whatever it takes.They understand hard work will pay off and I think that’s what they see in FTR because the competition is great but the camaraderie is even better

What’s about your competition?Jason: I had a outstanding season

compared to some of the other seasons. Last summer I worked really hard, rode a lot did everything right like you should in the off season and came out strong, had a bunch of good races and, I’ll be honest with you, and I got a little bit complacent, let my guard down a little bit, had a few of my competitors get in there and, honestly, I think I had more fun with the guys that were in my class. We’re competitive

when the flag drops but before and as soon as the races stop, we’re hanging out and the kids are cutting up and playing and that’s hard to do in a lot of competitive sports.

So, you were happy with the win?Jason: I was really ecstatic. I think I’m going to have my work cut out this year. But I look forward to it. It’ll be an interesting year this year. I haven’t done my due diligence this year so I have a lot of work cut out for me. How exactly did you keep all those bikes running?Jason: Look I would like to say it’s skill. I am ultra big on preventive maintenance: changing the oil, changing filters, tightening chains, nuts, bolts. In fact, I don’t let the kids or my wife wash their bikes. They all the time want to help and they don’t understand why I get

so upset when I come home and their bike’s washed. “Why are you doing it again?” It’s not so much the washing it as it is the checking it over. I’m making sure that this isn’t broke or this isn’t wore out. With four bikes, there’s a lot of things that went into this year, not only them and their riding skills to win their class, but keeping them bikes running...I was more lucky than anything this year. We didn’t have a lot of extremely muddy races Anything else you’re looking forward to?Jason: The biggest thing that I think I’m looking forward to this year is I think a lot of the clubs have put forth a lot of effort in the last couple of years to really try to improve the quality of their races. There was a few years in the past, when the economy was down and obviously people couldn’t come out to the races, you could tell there were only a few diehard folks that were out there trying to put on and they were doing the best they could but they just didn’t have the help and the volunteers to put into the race and some of the races were a little bit thrown together but I tell you what in the last coupe of years all the clubs in FTR have really been stepping up to try to improve the quality of the races to give the riders more of a bang for their buck if I must say.I’m looking forward to this year because it seems like the clubs are working harder and they’re trying to do more and improve that quality and that not only helps obviously me from a selfish standpoint because I get to ride better races but it helps everybody in FTR and I think it’s only going to grow us, you know. Anyone you would like to thank?Jason: Tom Fleming personally, for the time he’s spent to educate me on the science of suspension. I’m not a technology junkie and Tom’s able to talk to me in a manner that works where I can understand what the suspension is doing and we can actually have a conversation about suspension and I can tell him what the bike’s doing and I can fix it. Ronnie at HBD and Dave Wagner at Cycle Sports Center. I’ve had a lot of people help me out a lot but, at the end of the day, it really comes out of ‘My Wallet Racing.’ I’ve got enough stuff in my trailer to probably build two or three bikes... As Jonny (Simpkins) says, “Rock on, man, rock on.”
