Monthly Fun Fly Events Scrubbed: After holding two very successful
‘monthly’ SAM 21 fun fly events at Dwarfs field, we were advised that the series could not continue pursuant to Dwarfs Bylaws.
Too bad, I think the monthly events had sparked a renewed interest in fly-ing among SAM 21 members.
Anybody suggest an alternate venue? (No, McDonalds won’t work Dave…)
Painting 101: A very special note of thanks from your editor and Dr.
Joe Poco, goes out to one of our newer members, Ken Martinez. Learning I was having trouble getting up the nerve to attempt painting the Poly Span covering on my six foot Brooklyn Dodger, Ken went out of his way to help by holding a ‘painting 101’ class in Spray Painting basics in his shop in S.F. for the paint handicapped (Dr. Joe and me). We ran through the basics and proceeded to actu-ally paint several previously masked off areas on the stab and rudder.
Since then, with Dr. Joe’s able assistance, we have completed all the color coated areas, leaving only clear coat application remaining. Currently awaiting some cooler weather, that process should be completed in time to bring the Dodger to the September meeting.
The graphics have been completed by Jeff Stern of E&M Custom Lettering at a very reasonable price (see ad below) and are ready to apply over the clear coat.
Thanks also to Ken for the tour of his continuing rehab work on your beautiful home. Your craftsmanship is out-standing...

Illustrated is the Sky Limit unit ‘permanently’ in-stalled in Leisure Bomber.
The ‘spy hole’ re-ferred to is 1/4 in hole in the hatch opposite the ‘ready’ light in the unit. This allows vis-ual confirmation that the unit is armed.
I think I've solved the interference problem I described, wherein I had an early engine shutdown and
couldn't restart my Brown Jr. after just installing the Sky Limit into a ship given me by Jose Tellez some
time ago. I'd replaced the 72 MHz RX, with 2.4, but kept the servos that came with it.. The throttle cutoff
servo was a Hi-Tec HS-55, smaller than the other two servos. It was jittering so badly that it was cutting off
the spark. I hadn't realized it, but those little servos are meant for small electrics and they don't even
have grommets - they're just hard mounted.
Thinking back, that servo had been progressively going south from engine vibration for some time. The
installation of the Sky Limit had just finished the job. I pulled the Sky Limit and the problem went away.
I replaced the servo and today had a couple of successful flights with the Sky Limit reinstalled. While the
servo was the basic problem, the Sky Limit did contribute to it, and I'd suggest we recommend an engine
running ground range check on first time installation of Sky Limits, even with 2.4 radios.
