Many people have a devotion to Padre Pio, a saint who was known to have the stigmata, who prayed incessantly, bilocated and lis-tened to confessions for hours. His words have been quoted so often because of his incredible dedication to the priesthood. One of his most famous quotes is, “Pray, hope, and don’t worry.” He continued by saying the second part: “Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.” We need to hear this right now. A lot of people are worried and fearful. “Frozen with fear” is a saying we can all identify with, but we need to pray and know God is with us. We need to come back to church and feel His love and protection. If you are fearful, know that you can come to a weekday Mass where it isn’t as full. You can also come to our holy hours and pray. It is good to come back to church and I’m continually praying for all of you and can’t wait to see you all together one day.

Catechetical SundayParents are the primary catechists of their children. They must take very seriously that they must be the ones to pass on the faith and to teach their children the great value of their Catholic faith. The ministry of catechists is such an important one and we take this day to bless them for their work. There is an additional special blessing for the parents and guardians as well. All of our teachers of catechesis of the faith will be recognized for their very important ministry and work. May we keep them in our prayers.
A Prayer for Catechists
Dear God, Thank you for calling me to be a catechist,
for the opportunity to share with otherswhat you have given to me.
May all those with whom I share the gift of faithdiscover how you are present in all things.
May they come to know you, the one true God,and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
May the grace of the Holy Spirit guide my heart and lips,so that I may remain constant in loving and praising you.
May I be a witness to the Gospel and a minister of your truth.May all my words and actions reflect your love. Amen.

1 | CONGRATULATIONS! On September 5, Fr. Jacob officiated at the Sacrament of Marriage. Please pray for and congratulate our newly married couple, Mr. And Mrs. Samuel and Sarah Dicken.
2 | REST IN PEACE. Longtime and beloved St Cecilia parishioner Helen Martin died on August 30. Helen was 97½ years old. Helen’s Mass of Chris-tian Burial was held on September 3. May angels lead you into paradise, Helen, and take you to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem.
3, 4, 5 | WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD. On Labor Day weekend, we celebrated the Sacrament of Baptism for four baby girls. Please welcome Nathally Hernandez, daughter of Christian and Maria Hernandez Morales; Kaily Ann, daughter of Kristopher and Caylin Holmes; Riley Paige, daughter of John and Rachel Wirtz; and Maura Catherin, daughter of Charles and Christen Steimle.
6 | YOUNG ADULT GIVES WITNESS. On Thursday, September 3, Nathan Crankfield, a member of the pastoral region, gave witness to his experience of being a bi-racial man. Nathan spoke not only of his experience but also of what our Christian response to racism should be.
7 | VISIT TO BROWN COUNTY URSULINES. On Labor Day, I traveled from my cabin in Ripley to the campus of Brown County Ursulines and Chatfield College. Once there, I was surprised to find that the campus once housed Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary of the West. The seminary originally was named by Archbishop Purcell in honor of the school he attended and fondly remembered, Mt. St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Maryland. At the nice campus, there is a cemetery for faithful religious of the Brown County Ursulines. Also at the cemetery is the tomb of Archbishop Purcell and family. It was said that the controversial archbishop was buried far away in Brown County because they were afraid his body would be desecrated. In the 1980s, it was decided that his tomb be moved and placed with the other archbishops, bishops, and priests of the archdiocese at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. While doing so, howev-er, the tomb was found to be empty. No one, to this day, claims to know the whereabouts of his remains.
8 | VISIT TO ARNHEIM. In my travels during Labor Day weekend, I stopped at one of our country parishes in the far eastern part of the diocese. The church is nestled in the farm community of Arnheim, Ohio. Arnheim is about an hour east of the Eastside Pastoral Region. Part of the reason for going there, besides showing off the church to my relatives who were with me, was to visit the new pastor, Fr. Frank Amberger. Fr. Frank is a son of St. Cecilia Parish and a son of longtime parishioner Frank Amberger Sr. It was great to see Fr. Frank and find out that he is as happy as the picture shows.
9 | THANK YOU. I want to thank the chair of St. Cecilia Worship Commis-sion, Judy Russell, and the rest of the commission for their hard work and commitment. Judy and others have been cleaning, counting, and keeping things in order each week. Also a big thank-you is in order to Dave Rosselot for overseeing the making and replacement of the new pew separators at St. Cecilia, and thanks also to John Wichard, Terri Spooner, and Deb Garvey for helping Dave with this project. It was a lot of work!

FAMILY OF FAITHFamily of Faith will be the ordinary means of religious education for ALL children and parents in each parish of our Eastside Pastoral Region. It is a complete replacement for PREP (Parish Religious Education Program) and is the new avenue in which all children in the region, regardless of their parish or if they attend Catholic grade school or not, will prepare for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.
Session 1 began on Sun., Sept. 13, at 11:30 AM-12:30 PM, and will take place on the second Sunday of each month from Sept.–May.
You can still register! Go to our www.eastsidefaith.org/fof and fill out the online registration form. If your child is receiving a sacrament, you must provide a copy of their baptismal certificate.
KNOW YOUR SAINTSSt. Matthew Matthew was a Jew who worked for the occupying Roman forces, collecting taxes from other Jews. The Romans were not scrupu-lous about what the “tax farmers” got for themselves. Hence the latter, known as “publicans,” were generally hated as traitors by their fellow Jews. The Pharisees lumped them with “sinners” (see
Matthew 9:11-13). So it was shocking to them to hear Jesus call such a man to be one of his intimate followers.
Matthew got Jesus in further trouble by having a sort of going-away party at his house. The Gospel tells us that “many” tax collectors and “those known as sinners” came to the dinner. The Pharisees were still more badly shocked. What business did the sup-posedly great teacher have associating with such immoral people? Jesus’ an-swer was, “Those who are well do not
need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners” (Matthew 9:12b-13). Jesus is not setting aside ritual and worship; he is saying that loving others is even more important. No other particular incidents about Matthew are found in the New Testament.
CATECHESIS (kat’i-ke’sis) n.What does the “communion of saints” mean? The “communion of saints” is made up of all men and women who have placed their hope in Christ and belong to him through Baptism, whether they have already died or are still alive. Because in Christ we are one Body, we live in a communion that encom-passes heaven and earth. [946-962]
The Church is larger and more alive than we think. Among her members are the living and the deceased (whether they are still undergoing a process of purification or are already in the glory of God), individuals known and unknown, great saints and inconspicuous persons. We can help one another even beyond the grave. We can call on our patrons and favorite saints, but also our departed relatives and friends whom we believe are already
with God. Conversely, by our intercessory prayer, we can come to the aid of our dear departed who are still undergoing purifi-cation. Whatever the individual does or suffers in and for Christ benefits all. Conversely, this unfortunately means also that every sin harms the communion. (YOUCAT question 146

Fall Bible Study: Peter – Cornerstone of CatholicismA 10-week study featuring Dr. Tim GrayStudies have begun and will run on Mondays at 7 PM at St. Ce-cilia (Commons) and Tuesdays at 12:30 PM at St. Margaret-St. John (Rectory) | Material Cost: $25The character of St. Peter is both inspiring and confounding to many of us. How could a stub-born and impulsive fisherman become the “rock” upon which Jesus would build his Church? Bringing together biblical accounts, historical evidence, Church teaching, classical art,
and personal insights, Dr. Tim Gray gives a fresh perspective on Simon Peter that is immediately informative and relevant to our lives. After all, if Jesus could bring out the very best in someone like Peter, then there is hope for the rest of us.
In these ten stirring lectures, learn what happens when flawed humanity comes up against God made flesh.
To register, visit the regional website, www.eastsidefaith.org/peter and fill out the digital registration form at the bot-tom of the page. Direct all questions to our DRE, Cody Egner.
