A whole-food bar born from University of Montana research, ultra-racing trial and error, and Montana-raised beef, has hit the shelves across the Northwest. Omnibar, a nutritionally balanced whole-food bar that uses beef for protein as opposed to soy or whey, was conceptualized and prototyped in Montana and refined using technology in Oregons Food Innovation Center. The idea for Omnibar was developed after a conversation between Cooper Burchenal, Montana beef rancher and Brent Ruby, a UM research professor and director of the Montana Center for Work Physiology and Exercise Metabolism. Together, they realized that there was no whole-food nutition bar on the market that uses animal protein. Two hours later, the duo became business partners with a sketch of a business plan and a vision to bring a beef-based bar to market. Burchenal was looking for a unique use for the beef from his familys ranch, and Ruby, an endurance athlete fatigued by his own nutritional options, was interested in finding a more functional food bar. Its basically a dinner plate in a bar, Ruby said. It combines Montana beef with nut butters, sweet potatoes, grains and dried fruits thats shelf stable, nutritionally balanced and free of preservatives and artificial color and flavors. Along with providing a new, better, real-food option to groups like military personnel, wildland firefighters and even the Seattle Seahawks, Ruby sees Omnibars competing well with big-brand energy snack options. Omnibar meets the nutritional requirements of extreme athletes, Ruby said. But it also can provide really good solutions to avid recreationalists or even an on-the-go family. Omnibars are available in stores throughout Montana, but not yet in eastern Montana. To learn about where Omnibars are sold or if youd like to be an Omnibar retailer, visit http://omnibars.com/find-omnibar/ . You can also order Omnibars online if theyre not out of stock. A 12-bar sample pack (roasted peanut, mango curry, chipotle barbecue and cranberry rosemary) is $36.

  • by Janet Bailey Ted and Karen See, of Opheim, are hosting two foreign exchange students this school year. The two girls are with the ASSE program. They have had exchange students before, but not two together. They find hosting the two young ladies have added much enjoyment and activity to their lives and learning so much about countries you seldom hear about, like Turkmenistan, which most people dont know where is or if it is a country even. Unchisa Chaokitka is from the small town of Trang in Thailand. Her nickname is Aomsin and she is a 15-year-old sophomore. She said there are 56 students in her class in Trang and about 2,000 in the school. Aomsin has a younger brother. When she came she showed the Sees some coins from the United States that her cousin had given to her. He had been an exchange student in the US also. Aomsin speaks Thai, Chinese and English. She said her favorite subject is math here and at home. She played badminton and has had five years of swimming. She is playing volleyball on the Opheim team. She says she likes it in Opheim. Zylyha Nuryagdyyeva is from Bayramaly, Turkmenistan, in the Region of Mary in Central Asia. She is with the Flex program (Future leaders exchange). She is a Junior and is 17 years old. Zylyha has a younger brother and a little sister. Zylyha says she likes everything in school as she did at home. She speaks Turkmen, Russian, Turkish and English. For a music class she wrote the lyrics to a song about her country, in English, and sang it at school where she won a competition, then won at the regionals and went on to the capital Ashgabat to compete there.

Zylyha is playing volleyball for the Vikings and says she really enjoys it. She likes the Opheim community and says the people are very friendly. Zylyha will do volunteer service and both girls will do presentations about their homeland. They find many interesting motives to take photos of to send home and show to their friends. They take photos of the prairie and sky with sun, moon and cows in the background. They also have been taking photos of deer, fox, porcupine, rabbit and the friendly people. Zylyha says nature is especially amazing to photograph.

Aomsin and Zylyha are enjoying their time in Opheim.
