Dear Parishioners, Where were you when you heard about 9/11? It is one of those moments like the day that President Kennedy was shot, or Pearl Harbor was bombed, that define a part of our lives. I realize now, 20 years later, that we have lots of people who were not yet born or are too young to remember 9/11. But, we all live some of the changes in our lives, like color-coded threat levels, Anthrax, air marshals, cavity searches, three ounce containers, and a new reality that we, as a country, are vulnerable to an attack that could result in a great loss of innocent lives. For me, 9/11 happened on a Tuesday and that was my UWGB campus ministry day. We quickly put together a candlelight prayer service and were as available as we could be to minister to the students as we struggled to understand. We turned to God. As events in our country shape our lives, do we let events in our scriptures shape our lives? Take for example the Last Supper. From this comes our Eucharist, our spiritual nourishment from here to eternity. This is certainly a faith event that changed our lives. We were not alive for this event, as we were not all alive for all of the events I listed above, but they still shape our spiritual lives. I encourage you to bring our country’s events into our scriptures and let the Lord's Words shape our lives, not just the tragedy of our world. I encourage you to pray daily. One good option is to pray over the daily readings. Look particularly at this coming Monday's reading. As you read over it, where in Mass do we hear some of these words? "...the centurion sent friends to tell him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof. Therefore, I did not consider myself worthy to come to you; but say the word and let my servant be healed. .." (Luke 7:1-10) After the Lamb of God, during the final elevation, as the priest holds up the host and the chalice with the Precious Blood in it, I pray "Behold the Lamb of God, Behold Him who takes away the sins of the World. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lord.' To which you reply "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed." Note the wording that comes from the scriptures. Next time we are at Mass, let us realize that, like the centurion, we are worthy, it is the Lord who makes us worthy through His word. Allow the Mass to shape our lives from here to eternity. God Bless, Fr. Doug P.S. Beginning on September 12th, Bishop Ricken’s TV Mass moves to 7:30 a.m. (on WFRV TV Channel 5). It is always good to attend Mass in person and to receive the Eucharist. Yet, I know some who are not able to come to church and Bishop’s Mass is a good option. For others, if you are able to come to church, I say don't limit your options, do both.

A note from Fr. Doug...

Discipleship: Unforgettable Personal Encounter (Jn 1:35-42) Jesus passed and John the Baptist stared at Him and said “This is the Lamb.” A disciple-to-be fixes his/her eyes on Jesus. The bible points out to Him. The word of God prepares one to meet Him one-to-one. Anyone who has hunger and thirst for the word of God will come to Him. Hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. Jesus walks on a path right before me and a disciple-to-be begins to follow, though, timidly, with their heart beating fast. Because this is their first meeting...what will He do? What will He think of my action, as a disciple begin to follow Him in all aspects of life. Jesus turned around, saw them following and said “What do you want and where do you live?” Jesus acknowledges the search of a disciple and He questions them and a disciple-to-be replies “Where do you live?” 1) Searching for, 2) Following, 3) Living with, are the three essential attitudes of a disciple. Come and See: Jesus answers to his/her search and respects their freedom and they stayed with Him the rest of that day. The first meeting with Him is always unforgettable. A disciple remembers it forever. In the meeting, a disciple narrates his life stories, expresses his/her desire, and askes questions. Jesus talks about His plans and His own desires. One of these two was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter...he finds his brother and says to him “we have found the Messiah” and he took Simon to Jesus. The divine adventure is enacted through and in human relationships. John and Andrew were bound by friendship, they were also bound by a common ideal: disciples of John the Baptist. Blood relationship works. A disciple leads his/her brothers and sisters to Jesus. A disciple who meets Jesus launches into an apostolic venture. A vocation to be a disciple is not born in the clouds. Human relationship either fosters or prevents a call to be a disciple. A disciple is always attentive to the groups and natural communities which binds them together. The good of Jesus does not reach isolated individuals, but persons in relationship with others. They share and stay with others and foster relationships. A vocation to be a disciple is a call from God. A disciple always points to Jesus, so He could also call others to follow Him. ~ Fr. George Daniel

Hospitality and Life Teen House Refresh “Radically ordinary hospitality shows this skeptical, post-Christian world what authentic Christianity looks like.”

Hospitality, along with other Christian buzzwords like evangelization, stewardship, or discipleship, is a word that has become overused to the point of being misunderstood or cheapened. Often our idea of hospitality starts and ends at the front doors of the church, not making it to the pews before Mass or to the parking lots following Mass. But what can hospitality look like beyond opening doors, handing out bulletins, and helping parishioners find seating in the pews? While this question could be answered in a myriad of ways, one way in which we’re currently seeking to become more hospitable is through our physical use of space as the Life Teen House is being upgraded. The Damascus Center has been repainted and the technology has been updated. New furniture has been ordered to replace furniture throughout the House that is either broken, stained, outdated, or not best for the space. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program is also expanding and is making use of another room in the Life Teen House. Long term plans also include updating the kitchen and bathrooms to be both more modern and functional for ministry needs. The temptation when approaching spaces for ministry is to respond with the following: The rooms or buildings are sufficient as is, we don’t need to make changes. What was fine 10, 20, or 30 years ago should still be fine today. Updates and renovations aren’t worth the cost. But therein lies the paradox: Hospitality is necessary simply because it isn’t. When we take time to give the walls a fresh coat of paint, replace outdated pieces of furniture, hang beautiful artwork, place tablecloths over tables, opt for soft lighting over fluorescent lighting, and serve those gathered with actual dishes and glasses versus styrofoam dishes and cups, we communicate the value of the people gathered in our midst: You are important enough to not be sitting on stained furniture from the 1980s. You are valued enough not to be met with fluorescent lighting and metal folding chairs. You are worth the time it takes to launder linen tablecloths and wash actual dishes. You are worth our priorities, money, investment, time, and inconvenience. The Life Teen House, along with the many small group rooms within it, will be renamed to convey the vastness of ministry that takes place in this building including Life Teen, Summit + Dead Theologians Society, Edge, Thursday Nights of Faith, Nomads, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, High School Mini Courses, Confirmation, Young Adult Ministry, and more! We’d also love to see the use of this space expand. If you have a current ministry group, would like to get a ministry group started, or perhaps are a parent who’d simply like to gather with other parents for coffee after dropping your kids off at school, know that this space is available for you. Thank you to all who’ve volunteered to do work in the Life Teen House over the last month, including Dan and John Eisner, Paul Karbon, Jerry Neumann, and those who’ve helped move furniture: Jen Kozak, Brock Peterson, John Christianson, Allan Jaeger, Cameron Gruenke, Jennifer Harrison, and Woody Shulander. If you’d like to contribute financially to this project, including our long term project to update the kitchen and bathrooms, please contact Mark LeGreve at [email protected]
