In worship this week we will be
looking at the theme of “Living our
faith.” What does it mean to be a
Christian these days? How do we live
a faith in the way Jesus taught in the
scriptures? In Mark’s gospel chapter
8, Jesus and his disciples and travel-
ling near Caesarea Phillippi and
Jesus asked them, “Who do you say
that I am? To some, they thought
Jesus was a prophet, some said
John the Baptist and others thought
he was Elijah.
The identity of Jesus can be a
mystery. Each one of us may under-
stand who Jesus is differently. Most
of us do not fully know who Jesus is
and yet as his followers on earth we
strive to understand his teachings
and live the Christian life.
This week we will explore our call as
a Christian follower of Jesus and how
we can be authentic in our faith as
we live in the 21st century.
Scripture Reading this week:
James 3: 1-12
Mark 8: 27-38
Sermon:
Who Do You Say That I Am?

100 points
A man dies and goes to heaven. St. Peter meets him at the pearly gates. St. Peter says, "Here's how it works. You need 100 points to make it into heaven. You tell me all the good things you've done, and I give you a certain number of points for each item, depending on how good it was. When you reach 100 points, you get in." "Okay" the man says, "I attended church every Sunday" "That's good, says St. Peter, " that's worth two points" "Two points?" he says. "Well, I gave 10% of all my earnings to the church" "Well, let's see," answers Peter, "that's worth another 2 points. Did you do anything else?" "Two points? Golly. How about this: I started a soup kitchen in my city and worked in a shelter for homeless veterans." "Fantastic, that's certainly worth a point, " he says. "hmmm...," the man says, "I was married to the same woman for 50 years and never cheated on her, even in my heart." "That's wonderful," says St. Peter, "that's worth three points!" "THREE POINTS!!" the man cries, "At this rate the only way I get into heaven is by the grace of God!" "Come on in!"

Grant’s World Grant’s World Grant’s World
This week we have seen many news stories of the refugee crisis in Syria. Millions of people are
being displaced and others losing their lives. This is a harsh reality for so many in the world in
numerous countries such as Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Eretria, Sudan and Syria. This week the
war on ISIS has become at the front of the news because of an image of a poor little three year
old boy washed up on a beach in Turkey after the refugee boat he was on with his family
capsized. The violence has been happening for a long while now but now suddenly has become
climactic because of an image.
When I was much younger I recall the refugee crisis happening also. “Boat people” from
Vietnam and Laos were refugees fleeing their homeland to come for a new life in Canada.
Trinity United, in Cobourg, through their outreach and action committee proposed to the church
that they would sponsor a refugee family. In around 1979 the first family came from Laos to live
in a rented home near the church. After a number of years the “refugee family” became
permanent residents of Canada and now made their home here. In the years after that first
family, Trinity went on the sponsor many refugee families and this has become a vital ministry of
outreach and hospitality for the congregation.
In my sermon last Sunday, I made a reference to sponsoring refugee families from Syria and
after the service a number of people approached me asking what can we do? Or how can we
help?
In the United Church there are resources available to help congregations get started with
sponsorship. The national church is pleading with local congregations to help in this crisis. As
recently as last night an email came from the Toronto Conference office and some grant money
has been offered to 50 churches willing to take a refugee family. This is great news!
If people are interested in talking about the possibility of sponsoring a family or sharing with oth-
ers in sponsoring please let me know and we can see what can be done here in Georgetown.
Here is a link to more information for how to get started from the United Church head office. http://united-church.ca/communications/news/general/150903
When we offer assistance to people in need we are showing Christ’s love in action and living our faith in a very real way. Together we pray with others that those in immediate distress will be comforted by the support and care of others and by God’s blessings.
Blessings.
See you on Sunday,
Grant

BREAKFAST COMMUNION SERVICE
One of Sula Anne’s most memorable services was the breakfast communion service held in
the Hall on Sunday, August 9th. We hoped for a good turn out and were thrilled when we had
to add tables to hold the approximately 90 people! The head table had Jesus and Judas and
several other disciples! Rob Ogger, Sula Anne and Sue Whaley played the music. We had 2
special guests - Jake (Sula Anne’s son) played Jesus and a friend, Alexander played Judas.
Breakfast and Communion were part of the service. Thank you to all who took part in the
service or helped prepare for the service!
Thank you also to Wilf Gray, Gord and Dorothy Robinson, Valerie Jordan, Pat Moore, Merna
Prete, and Margaret and Ross Yahiro for putting on the breakfast. Thank you also for all
those that helped this group with the breakfast on Sunday morning especially Howard and
Marlene Beitz and Michelle Prete!

A Poem
The blessed rain keeps streaming down
on our parched earth below.
Soaking the ground and farmers' fields
restoring our crops to grow.
We depend so much on our natural resources
that we tend to forget the greedy forces
that take away too much of our land
and tell us it's "progress" so we'll understand.
Let's pray to our Lord that he'll help us to use
these blessings of nature with restraint, not
abuse.
