CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH
The Clarion
Mission Statement: Christ Lutheran Church exists to
“...continue to share the Good News of Jesus Christ
Volume 18, Issue 9
September 1, 2015
Pastor Neil Vanderbush has accepted the call as Interim Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church and has signed a contract for the coming year. Thanks be to God! Pastor Vanderbush calls West Texas home. Born and raised in the Amarillo area, he and his wife Holly have three children, Dean (17), Abigail (13+) and Aden (12); and a dog, Petey. Prior to pastoral ministry, pastor served in the U.S. Marine Corps and also worked in electro-mechanical trades. He attended Concordia University, Austin, for his B.A, and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, for his M.Div, where he is also a current D.Min student. Pastor has served full-time in parishes in Arkansas and North Carolina over the past nine years. On top of regular parish ministry, he has been involved in specialized work, such as mission and church planting, congregational renewal and revitalization, university campus ministry, military and veteran outreach, etc. He enjoys what he does vocationally. The Vanderbush family is excited to come to Lubbock in order to serve the Lord, and they look forward to partnering with Christ Lutheran in the work of Christ’s Gospel. Don’t be surprised to see them be adventurous as they explore the South Plains region of the Llano Estacado. They appreciate your prayers and thoughtful assistance. (Any suggestions for good, local eateries are very welcome, too!) You will want to be here for the Installation Service for Pastor Vanderbush on Sunday, September 20th, at 3:30 P M. with the Rev. Eric Hiner officiating the installation. A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall.

As a tribute to Marylin and Art Ormsby for their many years of
service to the Braille Center at Christ Lutheran Church, present
and past Braille workers have planned a potluck lunch immedi-
ately following worship service on September 27, 2015. Meat
dishes will be prepared by the Braille ladies, and we would ask
members of the congregation to bring along a side dish to be
shared. Marylin has worked in the Braille ministry for 33 years,
leading the three groups of workers for 18 of those years. Art has supported this ministry
in many ways, substituting for workers, training new recruits and helping get the Braille
Bible books packaged and shipped. With increasing health issues, Marylin announced, with
tremendous sadness, this would be her last year to work in the Center. Please join us to
celebrate their remarkable dedication to Braille ministries.
Is it worth my time? I guess we all evaluate our time commitments based on our perceived value. The less time we have, the more valuable it becomes. But we do seem to be able to make time for the important things, the people and things we treasure. As Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your
heart will be also.” Our time with Him directly relates to the richness of our life. Kids today are struggling with so many problems, some new and some the same old problems we faced. Where will they find the strength to withstand Satan’s attacks? Our children are watching and learning from us every day. They will carry those experiences and memories into adulthood. I pray that all of us as parents and grandparents would see the value in bringing the kids every Sunday morning to learn and share their faith in Christ with their peers. We are working hard to have activities and lessons that are relevant and help them grow in their love and faith in Jesus! Let’s show our kids how to run this race for Christ! The PDO school year is off to a wonderful start! The teachers and I were
excited to see our students and also welcome several new families to our
program. The children are adjusting well and are having a good time. The
month of September brings the beginning of the autumn season and watching
the leaves begin to change colors. We will also begin learning the alphabet,
numbers, and colors and have many craft activities. This month, the PDO program will resume
the “Read To Me” program. Our first session will be Tuesday, September 8, 2015. Please come
and join us! The children love the individual attention! If you have any questions, please call
the church at 799-0162.
Thank you for your continued support of Christ Lutheran Church’s PDO ministry.

The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. This amazing book became a #1 New York
Times bestseller, a major motion picture, and "required reading" for LISD mid-
dle school students.
The very unusual narrator, Death, tells the story of Liesel, a nine-year-old girl
who loses her family in Hitler's war-torn Germany. She is taken in by foster par-
ents and learns to adapt herself to heart-breaking conditions. This is a very
dangerous time to live in Munich, even more so when Liesel's foster parents
allow a Jewish shelter in their home. Liesel's foster father takes an interest in
her and teaches her to read. Her new love for reading results in her stealing
books wherever she can find them—everywhere from Nazi book burnings to the
mayor's wife's library.
Death, although overwhelmingly busy harvesting souls due to the war and the holocaust, notices
Liesel's strength, determination, and compassion for others.
His admiration for her results in a captivating story and a beautiful ending.

CLC Kids’ Corner Please pray for our children:
Almighty God, heavenly Father, You have blessed us with the joy and care of children. Give us calm strength and patient wisdom
that as they grow in years, we may teach them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of our Savior, Jesus
Christ, our Lord. Amen

THRIVENT ACTION TEAMS Thanks to Mary Lee Franklin and members from Christ Lutheran and Gloria
Dei for continued support of the Upbring (formerly LSSS) foster care children in Lubbock! Mary Lee sponsored an Action Team through Thrivent Financial and used grant funds to purchase backpacks for the children. After picking them out, the kids went to the foster care office to fill the back packs with school supplies and enjoy refreshments donated by Christ and Gloria Dei members. What are you passionate about? Contact me for information about how to start an action team with $250 seed money from Thrivent.

WATERS ELEMENTARY MISSION As you may remember, Pastor Otte thought our Waters Elementary project was a great mission. We can't forget the children of today who we hope will be pro-ductive adults of the future. They didn't create the situation they are in. The Wa-ters Elementary Mission is a great mission and we are excited to start this up again. Waters Elementary covers the territory from Indiana Avenue to University Avenue, Loop 289 to 98th St. The average census is 700, (+ or -), and includes the children from Women's Protective Service. A dis-play table of the items requested can be seen in the Fellowship Hall. There is infor-mation at the display about where to find items and prices. Pants and underwear in sizes 4,5, and 6 are also greatly needed. A collection box will be at the base of the ta-ble. Questions can be directed to either Marolyn Rinne, 806-828-3929, or Louise Reynolds, 806-795-1568.

UPBRING ADVISORY BOARD NEWS
(From the August 10, 2015 meeting)
FIT (FOSTER CARE/ADOPTION – The budget is for 55 and they have 55 kids and have 17 families. Four families are in the process of being approved. Unfortunately, a special needs child died last week, therefore an investigation is underway, which is normal. FIT and Mary Lee Franklin are taking the foster kids to Target for backpacks and school supplies. A trip to Joyland for a fun party is also planned.
HEALTH FOR FRIENDS (HFF) – During July, 112 clients were seen in the clinic and several new diabetics were diagnosed. The Food Bank is having a conference and HFF will be giving a presentation. They have been approved for multi-year funding by United Way; which means they will not have to go through the application process for several years. Dr. Ted Mitchell, president of HSC, visited HFF clinic and he was impressed with the work being done. HFF will give a presentation to Senior Compan-ions in September. United Way kicks off August 23, 2015. They are also working with the Food Bank to develop a more health/diabetic friendly box of food for distribution. Five glucometers were distributed in July.
NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE (NH) – July was a busy, hot month. Since May and June, temperatures were mild, they have not paid out as much as last year. Food voucher requests were down because more places are offering free meals at present. CEAP funds were depleted in June. More funding was received in July, which was designated for May-July, and by mid-July, those funds had been used. In July, 807 households were served. The value of services distributed this year is just over $665,000. The Lubbock Area Foundation has approved funding to assist NH with the food voucher program which will help until the end of the year.
Fresh ideas for the Thanksgiving baskets are being considered. In the past, 100 baskets at a cost of $5,000 have been given out. Due to changes in the Thrivent funds, we will not be receiving as much from them and donations last year were down. They may have to cut back on numbers and/or quantity of food in the basket or possibly changing the whole program.
NEEDS – Toothpaste, especially small tubes, toothbrushes, deodorant.
