homes, renovations &

real estate

Issue #37- Sept. 17/09

o matter what you might think, or what someone might have told you, renovations of any type arent easy, and when you

start even thinking of bathroom renovations you can be assured that you’re letting yourself in for one big headache. However, don’t let that put you off. If you’ve got the renovation bug in you, then go for it. Besides, when you’re in the renovating mood, trying to redecorate your bathroom just won’t work.

You can try to spruce it up with new drapes and maybe a new rug. Perhaps even a new set of toothbrush holder and soap dish, but it just won’t make all that much of difference in your eyes. You’ve got bathroom renovations signs in your mind and it’s all you can do not to tear out the fifteen year old washbasin out with your bare hands.

You need to face the facts right here and now. Nothing but full scale bathroom renovations planning will do for you, and you need to get down to work. So you plot and you plan like a maniacal mad professor, and even your kids start to think that you’re going round the bend. And this, only the first hour after you’ve made the decision to renovate.

Before you begin on your bathroom renovations though there are a few things you will need to do. First up, you need to decide if you have enough cash up front for you to be able to go through with this.

You really don’t want to be half way through your bathroom renovations and realize that you’re going to be short a crucial few hundred. Sure you might be able to scrounge up enough cash to get it done at that point but remember that growing children do need to eat in order to grow properly!

Use whatever method of funding that works for you, as long as you can allocate a proper budget to your bathroom renovations. The next thing you’ll have to look into is how you’re go-ing to cope while the bathroom renovations are being carried out.

Do you have only one bathroom or do you have two? If it’s the latter case then decide whether you’re going to be able to stand your whole family being forced to use it until all renovations are finished. And if you only have the one bathroom then you’ll have to come up with an alternate plan until your bathroom renovations are completed.

You could move into a residence hotel, or even a motel for the few days that you won’t be able to use the bathroom. Then again if you’re friendly with your neighbors you can always ask them if you could make free use of their bathroom until all renovations are over and done with.

As you can see beginning any bathroom renovations project requires planning and forethought on your part, so don’t tear out the washbasin with your bare hands before you get all these details ironed out!

As people get older there is more time to really enjoy the homes they have built for

themselves. The kids have grown and moved away, and being physically comfortable

has, perhaps, become more important than it was once. Knowing that aging eyes

need a better kind of light and more of it to be comfortable, remodeling the lighting

in your home improves comfort threefold.

From function to design, lighting affects everything. A room’s appearance and feel,

highlights and accents, and utility and cost are all important in considering how our

home’s lighting affects how we live. When contemplating a renovation, consider how

lighting renewal can transform your eyesight, living space and energy consumption.

Many of today’s lighting trends include energy efficiency and conservation. People

are seeking decorative ways to direct light exactly where it is needed and still

conserve energy. Under cabinet fixtures and multiple pendant lights in nooks and

over sinks and counters are ways to add decorative flare when they need special light.

And the new lighting is available with high wattage and low voltage to get a higher

output per watt.

Ceiling, wall-mounted and portable fixtures, and recessed and track lighting are all

available in energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs as well as light-emitting diode

(LED) lights.

Baby boomers are finding that they need three to four times as much light and that

glare is hard on the eyes. Fluorescent bulbs are easier to see by than regular light

bulbs. LED lights are being used more for their reduced glare, as well as Halogen,

for their white light quality. You can choose energy-efficient bulbs in many styles for

redecorating your whole house. LED Lighting are extremely long lasting with 50 to

100 times more light and 50,000 to 100,000 more hours.

LED lights will be constructed for every type of lighting to fit the style in your

home. There’s no singularity to style. A continuing major trend that’s going on - a

diversification of styles. Because there’s a style for every person, and everyone can

get what they want.

With decorative finishes in brushed nickel, pewter or Italian glass, you can find a

look that suits your taste. In the kitchen, the keystone of entertainment, adding a few

under-cabinet fixtures will make food preparation easier, and a few pendant fixtures

over the island or breakfast nook will add a touch of art that draws the eye in a whole

new direction.

Historically, exotic finishes were seen as high-end, pricey items that are now more

affordable and can be found in the entry level of product availability. For example,

items like Murano glass from Italy in a pendant, chandelier or sconce have become

available to the mainstream.

More recently, the varied styles in light fixtures have been combined to create a new

combination of designs for a completely different look. Traditional and contemporary

styles come together -modernist materials like stainless steel combined with crystals

provide a trend that’s different that anything we’ve seen in the past.

Create a lively, warm living environment with precisely placed light. Illuminate your

prized painting, book collection or family heirloom with recessed lighting, sconces or

the latest, MonoRail.

Carefully aimed light allows you to see well, and lights up what you want people to

see; as if creating a work of art with your living space. In the dining room, where the

attention is on the guests at the table, a chandelier provides the general lighting you

need and adds style and sparkle, perfect for dining, tasks or table games. The dining

room fixture is like jewelry for your home. You don’t change it as often, but when

redecorating a room one of the first things you’ll notice is that your fixture is dated.

use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar

Kitchen islands contribute to a more efficient and comfortable kitchen. This is actually a practice done way in the past. It is said that during the medieval times, an ordinary kitchen really did have large worktables for preparation work.

1. Purpose

- Meal preparations

- Room for family members and friends- Eating area- Additional storage space

2. Considerations

- Is there room for the island?- Ascertain the purpose the island will serve in the kitchen.- What configuration would you like for your kitchen?- There should be room for the walkway.- Be particular with the height of the counters.- Install properly the kitchen island.- Choose a style that fits you.

3. Room For The Island

This is the first and most important factor you have to consider before buying a kitchen island. Is there enough room in your kitchen? Is it big enough to contain another addition? It is not an ideal option to a cramped kitchen. The utility of the islands cannot be ignored, but they would be useless if you will not be able to move around freely in your kitchen. This is not really recommended for small kitchens but if you really are into having an island in your kitchen space, maybe you can consider disposing some items. You can remove some kitchen cabinets or shelves if they abound in your kitchen.

4. Ascertain Purpose

Your island is not a mere decoration. It can serve a variety of purpose, but if you intend to use it to a particular one, then make it the controlling factor in picking your buy. Do you want it just to have an extra storage space? If so maybe you can consider putting drawers and shelves to the island. Do you need it for cooking? You might want to put a cook top there and a sink.

5. Configuration

If you have too much space in your kitchen, you can freely get a longer island. If you have a quite cramped kitchen, you can get the narrower ones. If you are not a fan of the edges, then get those that have rounded corners. You can also have separate counters to serve different purposes.

6. Make Room For A Walkway

There should be enough room for you to move around. The island should have a distance of 36 to 45 inches away from the kitchen cabinets or from the wall. If there will be a stove or refrigerator near, the 45 inches distance would be enough. This will ensure that you can freely use the other appliances

without hitting the island.

7. Be Particular About Height

The height of the counter of your island should ideally match the height of other counters in your kitchen. This way you can ideally maintain uniformity and pattern in the kitchen area. Variances in height can also be effected if you want for certain purposes. Putting a lower level cans serve as an eating area. A higher level can be provided for use of some family members or friends who would hang out as you prepare in the kitchen. A bar seat can be provided for this purpose.

8. Install Properly

You can opt to have the kitchen island installed by experienced mechanics or workers. You can also opt to do it yourself. Just make sure you have taken note of all the instructions and follow them. You will also have to devote your time into properly installing it. Ask for an extra hand if needed. Take note also of the details in the kitchen. Like strategizing the position or avoiding interruption in the stove and washing area.

9. Style Is Of Equal Importance

There are various styles to choose from. For one, your kitchen island should not be a mere addition for utility in the kitchen. It should contribute to giving more character and style to the kitchen. There are traditional and contemporary styles to choose from. You can have the design blend with the current design or make it contrast. You can choose from various materials for your countertops, it can be steel, tile or wood. There are also portable islands available that can be moved. This should give you more versatility and convenience in working in the kitchen. The surfaces can also vary. There are flat ones that give the effect of simple elegance. The multi-level ones and architectural details like inset areas, shelving or corner posts can contribute to a dynamic personality of the kitchen you want to achieve. There are also countertops that are ideal and made for chopping. Some like those made of marble or granite are made for baking purposes. This comes handy when you roll your dough.

When you think of room dividers you probably think their only function is to break up large spaces. Sure, you know they come in many different styles and can add a bit of decoration to a room, but did you know that the can be practical as well as decorative?

Room dividers come in many sizes and styles. You can get folding screen room dividers with the standard 3 panels or huge dividers with 8 panels that stretch a whopping 140 inches across. Not only that but you can get them in metal, glass, leather, wood, bamboo, and fabric as well as ones with painted scenes, scrolly wrought iron and applied moldings. There’s a room divider for every style of decor you can imagine.

But room dividers are not only for decoration. They have many practical purposes, the most familiar of which is to divide a room. You can use them to break up a large multi purpose space such as a living room - dining room combo. This can be a great way to create a smaller more intimate space within a large room. And the best part is that if you decide you want your big multi purpose space back again, you simply fold up the room divider and put it away.

Room dividers can also add extra storage and display space to your room. If you use your room divider in a corner, there will be some empty space behind it which can be used to store things. No one will be able to see back there so you can use it to stash all that clutter right before guests come over! If you want some extra display space, you can buy a room divider with shelves. This is a 4 panel folding divider that has 4 shelves in the folds so it can do double duty as a piece of furniture to divide a room as well as display some great plants or collectibles.

Some room dividers have mirrors built in. Whether they have full mirrors on the panels, or smaller mirrors placed strategically on each panel, these types of room dividers are perfect for providing a private dressing room space in a bedroom or studio apartment. The room divider itself can double as a full length mirror and saves you from having to put a mirror somewhere else.

Another type of room divider that can add a personal touch to any room is a photo room divider. This room divider consists of panels that have slots into which you can place your own personal photos. You can fill it up with family photos, or create a theme of say a favorite vacation, or maybe fill it with photos of a favorite place that your family likes to go to. Either way, this room divider is one that you’ll never get tired of looking at.

Room dividers are a great way to add a unique touch to your decor so if you are looking for a special piece to fill a spot in your home, be sure to check out

some of the great room dividers available. There’s one to suit every style and taste.

WOODEN CLOCKS MAKE GREAT GIFTSWooden clocks make a fantastic gift to anyone. As hurried as today’s population is, looking at the clock has become something most do not think twice about. But, do they see what they are looking at? Wooden clocks that are well made will stand out and provide the beautiful luxury that people appreciate. When purchasing these, look for high quality, American craftsmanship, and durability. Reliable performance in handmade clocks is an impressive, elegant gift to anyone.

MANTLE CLOCKSMantle clocks, sometimes called mantel clocks, offer an air of sophistication and old world charm to them. For example, consider the Clayton. This beautiful timepiece is much more than a tool to tell time. It makes a statement sitting on any mantel. The craftsmanship of the wood is very high quality. The cabinet is handmade and all of the work done to the clock is done within the United States. The wood has a cherry finish to it and a brass finish dial. Within, you will find a quartz dual chime movement. There are two options for the sounds, the Bim-Bam or the Westminster.

Other options include the Seville, which is a wooden clock of solid cherry wood. It features a very beautiful design with cathedral windows. You can peer inside and see the very intricate pieces of the clock. It is a highly impressive clock. Or, for a complete different look, choose the Hudson Oak wooden clock. With its large face, it too is impressive in its design. The face of the clock is a soft almond color with Roman Numerals.

ANNIVERSARY CLOCKSAnother type of wooden clock to consider giving for a wonderful gift is an anniversary clock. These clocks are designed to provide a memorable sentiment

while still providing something magical and unique. There is a large selection of anniversary clocks to select from, giving you plenty of options for your family, friends, coworkers and anyone else.

For example, you may wish to select a Desk Portrait type of clock. Not only does this

stylish clock tell time perfectly and feature a golden book like design, but it also displays a beautiful photo, of anyone you want to remember to spend time.

Perhaps something more elegant is what you are looking for. In this case, consider the Jubilee or the Lord Baltimore II. The Jubilee is a dome clock with a brass finish. It has a brass finish to it, with two brass pillars. Notice the two-tone diamond cut dial ring on this beautiful clock, as it is its most spectacular finish. Instead, consider the Lord Baltimore II. This stately clock features a very handsome design in polished, bright brass.

WALL CLOCKSAnother option that you have for wooden clocks is the wall clock. These are graceful clocks, those that hang from the wall in any room and often are the focal point of the room. A variety of styles can be found. For a princely, stately look, consider the Ashmore. This clock is made in the USA and has the classic look to it. The wood is a warm cherry and the white clock dial really stands out from it. The numbers are in an Arabic form.

Another option is the Oakdale Keywind Movement clock. This clock is traditional and in the schoolhouse look. It has great detailing and provides a very specific look to any room, perhaps fitting well within a warm room, above a fireplace.

If you are planning to give your house and its surroundings that classic touch and feel then landscape bricks is a perfect way to go about it. Being used since ages you will have loads of options in choosing landscaping brick. They come in all colors and sizes so that not only you get the variety but all your needs are met.

In fact, what experts suggest is that if you are having trouble in how to go about the landscaping design, then bricks are always the right option. They are always there to bail you out of troubles. If you have a small porch or lawn in front of your house, a little bit of landscape bricks can completely alter the look of the place and help your house stand out of the rest in the neighborhood.

Of course bricks are there to add beauty to the landscape design. But importantly they are durable too and so will last much longer than other materials. Moreover they are low on maintenance and can go with almost any house, whatever the look may be.

You can have a patio made from bricks and

gives the driveway a lovely classical look that any other material would find hard to replicate. And all you need for it are bricks and mortar, and a little bit of your time. The layout of the bricks can be in two modes. You may either have them laid horizontally in rows one after the other. Or if you want to go a bit creative you can try the basket weave where you alternate horizontal and vertical bricks.

If you are doing up the look of your garden then also bricks can be a great help. In fact, bricks have been used for a long time in designing the layouts of gardens. Bricks can be used to border the flower garden, if you have one. The bricks will not only mark out a separate area for the flowering plants, but will also help to retain the water in the flowerbed. Similarly if you have a water garden bricks can be used to encase the area around the pool. Not only will it add to the look of the pool but will also improve its stability.

You can also use crushed brick to do up the sidewalks and pathways outside your house. But they do tend to sink into the ground. So if you don’t want the brick particle to get lost beneath the soil, then you must use landscape fabric below the crushed brick.

(NC)—September is Arthritis Awareness Month and did you know that more than 15 per cent of Canadians are unable to enjoy the simplest activities due to the pain from ar-thritis and inflammation? Rather than looking to over-the-counter prescriptions to soothe your pain, look on the kitchen counter and give tart cherries a try. Drinking tart cherry juice has been a long time natural remedy for arthritis and gout sufferers to ease debilitat-ing pain. Research conducted at Michigan State University found that tart cherries are a rich source of antioxidants and anthocy-nanins that can be beneficial for managing and preventing inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and Type 2 diabetes. Another added bonus is that they are easy to add into everyday meals. Cherries don’t have to be limited to desserts and salads – try out this interesting combination for your next morning brunch:

Cherry HomefriesIngredients:5 medium waxy potatoes cut into 1- inch cubes

1 onion, sliced2/3 (160 mL) or 1 cup (250 mL) dried tart

cherries3 tbsp (45 mL) olive oil (plus 1- 2 extra if needed)1- 2 tsp (5 - 10 mL) crushed red chilies (optional)Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:Sauté the onions and cherries over low- me-dium heat for 15 minutes or until the onions become a deep brown (but not burnt).

At the same time as the onions are cooking, boil the potatoes in salted water until fork tender.

Add the potatoes to the skillet with the onions (with the extra oil if needed) and sauté for 5 minutes on high to crisp up the potatoes

Season with salt, pepper, and chilies, to taste.

More recipes and information about the health benefits of tart cherries can be found online at www.choosecherries.com.

from Weber’s Real Grilling™ by Jamie PurviancePrep Time: 15 minutesMarinating Time: Grilling Time: 8 to 12 minutes

Dressing

• 3/4 cup pineapple juice• 2 tablespoons mild chili sauce• 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar• 1 tablespoon soy sauce• 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard• 1 teaspoon dark sesame oil • 1/2 cup sliced almonds • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, about 6 ounces each• Canola oil• 1/2 teaspoon nely chopped fresh marjoram• Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper• 4 cups mixed baby greens• 1 four-inch section cucumber, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced

1. In a medium saucepan, whisk the pineapple juice, chili sauce, vinegar, and soy sauce. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until 1/2 cup remains, 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl. Whisk in the mustard and sesame oil and allow to cool to room temperature.

2. In a medium skillet over medium heat, cook the almonds until lightly toasted, about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Lightly brush or spray both sides of the chicken with oil. Season with the marjoram and salt and pepper to taste. Grill over direct medium heat (350°F to 450°F), with the lid closed as much as possible, until the meat is rm to the touch and no longer pink in the center, 8 to 12 minutes, turning once. Cut into bite-size pieces.

4. In a large bowl, combine the greens, chicken, almonds, and cucumbers. Drizzle the dressing over the top (you may not need all of it) and toss to evenly coat the leaves. Serve immediately.

Makes 4 to 6 servings

from Weber’s Big Book of Grilling™ by Jamie Purviance and Sandra S. McRaePrep Time: 30 minutesMarinating Time: Grilling Time: 1-1/4 to 1-3/4 hours• 2 medium golden beets with leafy tops, each about 2-1/2 inches in diameter • 2 medium red beets with leafy tops, each about 2-1/2 inches in diameter • Extra virgin olive oil

Dressing

• 1 medium orange• 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil• 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar• 1 tablespoon nely sliced fresh basil• 1 teaspoon minced garlic• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt• Freshly ground black pepper• 1 large onion, cut into four 1/2-inch slices• 2 hearts romaine lettuce

1. Trim the leafy tops from the beets leaving about 1/2 inch attached; reserve the tops. Leave the root ends intact. Scrub the beets under cold water. Lightly spray or brush with olive oil. Grill over indirect medium heat (350°F to 450°F), with the lid closed, until tender when pierced with the tip of a knife, 1 to 1-1/2 hours depending on size, turning once. Remove from the grill and let stand until cool enough to handle. Trim the ends from the beets and discard. Rub off the skins. Cut the beets into 1/4- to 1/2-inch slices and place the red beets and the golden beets in separate bowls (to keep the red beets from dying the golden beets red).

2. Wash and dry the orange. With a zester, scrape off 1 tablespoon of zest. Alternatively, use a vegetable peeler to remove enough strips of zest to total 1 tablespoon when nely chopped. Reserve the zest.

Cut the remaining skin and white pith from the orange and, working over a medium bowl, separate the orange into sections, letting the sections and any juice fall into the bowl. Add the reserved orange zest and the remaining dressing ingredients to the orange sections, including pepper to taste. Gently stir to combine.

3. Lightly brush the onion slices with some of the dressing and grill over direct medium heat until tender, 10 to 12 minutes, turning once. Keep the lid closed as much as possible during grilling. Remove from the grill and allow to cool slightly, then separate into rings.

4. Rinse the reserved leafy tops of the beets under cold water. Select the smallest, most tender leaves and place with the romaine lettuce in a large bowl. Add half of the dressing and toss. Divide the lettuce mixture among four salad plates. Top with the beets and the onion rings and drizzle on the remaining dressing. Serve warm or at room temperature.

The only problem is they all have different purposes and work better with certain foods, so it is important to choose the perfect kitchen knife to suit all of your cooking needs.

Choosing a Kitchen KnifeBecause everyone has their own cooking and cutting preferences, there really isn’t one knife that is the best for every kitchen. You will want to choose a knife that works best on the types of food you use in your home, such as vegetables, breads, meats, etc.You will also need to choose between a straight edge and serrated edge knife, since they perform very differently from one another. A straight edge is great for cutting soft items like tomatoes, since it has a very sharp edge that can slice through almost anything. A serrated edged knife actually works like a small saw, and is ideal for cutting bread with a sawing action without squishing the food.

Buying a Kitchen KnifeWhen looking to buy a kitchen knife, you will want to look for individual pieces rather than knife sets. Although it can be more expensive this way, it is well worth the price to purchase a top-quality knife. In order to ensure you are buying a knife that will last for years, you will want to purchase one made out of stain-resistant, high carbon steel. Although they do require regular maintenance, they are the best of the best and will provide a very sharp blade that will last for years to come. You will also want to look at how the handle is attached, since knifes that are only glued into the handle can break very easily. Instead, buy a knife where the blade extends all the way down the handle, and is covered by the handle and held in place. Breaking the blade is nearly impossible, so you can rest assured your knife will last as long as you would like.

Types of Kitchen KnifesThere are all types of kitchen knifes to choose from, so you will need to pick

something that works best for your specific cooking needs. The chef knife is one of the most popular and versatile kitchen knifes available, since it consists of a large sharp blade that can cut through almost anything. The wide blade is great for chopping, slicing, and even dicing, and the curved shape makes it possible to rock the knife back and forth making it easy to use. A paring knife is like a small garnish knife,

and is ideal for small tasks like taking the core out of an apple. It has a very small blade and is usually best for cutting small items. A bread knife is another popular

knife found in many homes, and usu-ally consists of a very long serrated blade. It is ideal for sawing through bread and other soft items, but doesn’t work well for chopping hard items like vegetables.

Caring For Your KnifesLike most other items in your kitchen, your knives must be cared for. Straight edge blades need to be sharpened on a regular basis, while serrated knives actually never need to be sharpened. You will want to make sure and take care when using the knife, since hitting it down on a hard surface while cutting can actually dull the blade. Instead, you should use a soft cutting board to prevent any damage from occurring. Knives should be washed by hand and dried immediately, and should never be put in the dishwasher for cleaning. The detergent can actually dull the knife, and they can even become rusted depending on the type of metal the knife is made out of.

Taking care of your kitchen knife is important, especially if you purchase a high quality knife. It will help the knife to last longer and keep the blade sharp, and make it the perfect companion for your kitchen.

We eat to nourish our bodies and stay healthy and strong. But which food is best? That is, if you could survive on eating only one thing for the rest of your life, what would that perfect food be?

Here are the top contenders (in no particular order):

Blueberries — packed with antioxidants and phytochemicals, they are delicious. Widely available year-round fresh or frozen, they may help protect against Alzheimer’s disease and colon cancer, plus they improve nighttime visual acuity and help fight aging by reducing wrinkles.

Avocadoes — provide more than 25 essential nutrients, including potassium, Vitamin E, B-vitamins, and folic acid. One serving (about one-fifth of a medium avocado) contains 55 calories, most of which come from monounsaturated fat, thought to help maintain heart health. They are also a great source of fiber.

Sweet potato — naturally sweet, low in calories, high in fiber, and packed with vitamins and minerals (including beta-carotene, vitamin C, manganese, copper, vitamin B6, potassium, and iron), the sweet potato is king. Note that the moist, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes are NOT to be confused with yams, which are not related to sweet potatoes, and not usually found in local grocery stores.

Yogurt — has live cultures (probiotics), calcium, and B vitamins, which work together to help mitigate lactose intolerance, allergies, colon and breast cancer, diarrhea, and urinary tract infections. In addition, the calcium in yogurt helps reduce the chance of osteoporosis and keep our teeth strong. The protein helps our muscles to get stronger.

Salmon — a good source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids (more highly concentrated in the wild kind), salmon reduces inflammation and improves cholesterol levels, thereby reducing risk of heart attack and stroke.

Eggs — high in quality protein and essential fatty acids, they offer many ingredients needed to build and maintain strong health. Eggs also provide significant amounts of several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin

A, riboflavin, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, iron, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium.

Soybeans — found in foods like soy milk, soy sauce, miso (soybean paste), tempeh (which is kind of like a soy cake), and tofu, soy products provide a

good source of protein (and healthy meat alternative), as well as iron, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, B vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, and fiber.

Whole grains — contain valuable antioxidants not found in fruits and vegetables. They also contain B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium, iron, and fiber. Their main benefits include heart disease and stroke risk reduction, and type 2 diabetes risk reduction.

Broccoli — packed with vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and phytonutrients, it is filling, high in fiber, and low in calories. It also contains many cancer-fighting antioxidants and can help prevent cataracts, heart disease, and arthritis.

Bananas — a sweet source of potassium (an electrolyte necessary for maintaining many functions in the body), vitamin C, and several amino acids, bananas make a wonderful

addition to any meal of the day for all age groups.

Chocolate — perhaps most delicious of all, chocolate contains heart-healthy antioxidants called flavonoids, which may reduce damage to arteries by preventing the oxidation of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. About one-third of the fat is monoun-saturated, which can even slightly lower

cholesterol. Additionally, it appears that cocoa (chocolate without the fat) has an aspirin-like effect, helping to prevent blood clots known to cause heart attacks. Also, new studies have shown cocoa may lower blood pressure and improve the body’s processing of sugar.

And the Winner is …So, which food is most perfect? None of them! That’s right. Because our bodies cannot function without all essential nutrients, and no food exists that provides every single one, we could not possibly live on any one food.

Bon appetite!

Dear Reena,Can you tell me how to get rid of the cluster of fruit flies congregating around my fruit bowl? They seem to be multiplying by the second and I don’t know what to do. Thanks, Mike Dear Mike,How can I tactfully word this? Move your fruit bowl! If you are noticing a fruit fly infestation, store all fruit in the fridge, ripe fruits and vegetables provide a perfect breeding site for fruit flies. Cut away damaged or cracked parts of fruit and vegetables in case fruit fly eggs or larvae are present. Look for spills in cupboards, under appliances, and near stinky garbage cans. Organic matter left in drains is an attractant to fruit flies; clean the drain to get rid of eggs. Take a few empty jars or cups and inside each place: one quarter teaspoon dish soap, one quarter cup water and one quarter cup apple cider vinegar. In the morning you will notice fruit flies floating at the bottom of every cup.

Dear Reena,An ember from our fireplace burnt a small hole in our new carpet, about the size of a cigarette burn. We have leftover pieces of carpet, and I think there is a way to cut fibers to fill the burn hole but I am not sure exactly how to do this, or what kind of glue to use so it won’t get vacuumed up. The carpet is a plush pile, 65oz weight, and since the hole is so small I want to fix it myself. Thank-you, Morgan Dear Morgan,Trim the entire cigarette burnt parts away with small scissors. Using your leftover carpet, trim several pieces of fiber. Superglue the fibers into the burnt area. Check the repaired area in a day and add more snipped pieces if needed. Hi Reena,I think of you for so many household questions that befuddle me! And here’s another one! I have a big, “straw” summer purse. It has a cloth lining that is attached to the purse. I spilt blueberries on the lining, and don’t know how to clean the purse! Do you have any suggestions? Thanks kindly. I really appreciate your advice! Cynthia Dear Cynthia,Since blueberries are fruit and fruit falls under tannins as a stain classification, they must be treated as such. If you treat tannin stains the same as you would oil based or protein stains you will likely end up setting the stain. So when you are dealing with messes such as: fruit, alcoholic beverages, tea/coffee, cologne, felt tip pens, fruit juices, soft drinks and tomato juice they must be treated as such. For example if you wash tannin stains with bar soap, soap flakes, or detergents containing natural soap you have a good chance of setting the stain and making it difficult to remove. Your best bet is to soak your purse in dish soap and hot white vinegar. Leave for one hour. Next hold the purse over a pot of hot water and pour boiling water through the stain (this is probably a two person job). Leave to dry and repeat if needed. The heat of the water should not damage the purse but try pouring a small amount on the bottom first just to be safe. Dear Reena,In my last apartment my sofa bed was against an outer wall and I did notice that as the weather warmed there was a musty odor. I put this down to the fact that the upholsterer had made the skirt too long and air was not circulating underneath. I changed the fabric-covered mattress for a plastic covered one and sprayed the entire sofa with Febreeze and eventually Nil Odor. The item has been on an inner wall for almost five years and I have noticed the same odor when the outside temperature rises. The bed has only been pulled out for use

on less than 20 occasions during the many years I have had it, I do air it out every summer when the specific aroma reminds me to do so. I hope you can give me a quick response before my wool carpet is also affected. Thank-you. C. Dear C.,Airing the sofa out is a good idea because it sounds as though mold grew or is growing somewhere inside of the sofa bed, perhaps in the mattress. In my opinion commercial air freshener sprays mask odors for awhile but don’t actually clean. If I were you I would begin by having the bed professionally steam cleaned or rent a steam cleaner and tackle it yourself. With regards to the skirt not allowing air to travel underneath the sofa; this seems unlikely because most textiles are at least somewhat breathable and air should be able to travel in and out. You may want to consider storing thin piles of newspaper inside of the sofa when the bed is closed, doing this will help absorb odor and moisture. Replace newspapers once a month. If you notice other areas in your home being affected by high humidity, you may want to consider purchasing a dehumidifier. Dear Reena,The fly zipper on my brand new pants does not easily open and close. I need to know how to fix it without replacing the zipper. Thanks, Morgan Dear Morgan,Rub lip balm or Alberto VO5 Conditioning Hairdressing into the teeth of the zipper. Or glide a candle along the teeth to coat the zipper. Believe it or not? Why pant zippers are called “a fly”. Legend has it that zippers go up and down just like airplanes, therefore they are called flies.

Hyundai Canada continues to rack up quality awards and introduce game-changing new

products, both industry experts and consumers are recognizing Hyundai for their great

vehicles and their solid quality.

As sales continue to climb, so does the list of awards and accolades. The 2009

Hyundai Genesis is both Canadian and North American Car of the Year, its V8 engine is on

Ward’s Auto World’s “10 Best Engines” list, and it received a “Top Safety Pick” rating from

the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. And that’s only one Hyundai model!

The 2009 Santa Fe and Veracruz are rated Top Safety Picks by the

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety; the 2009 Sonata received an ecoENERGY award from

Natural Resources Canada; the overall brand improved its lead over the industry average in

the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Vehicle Dependability Study, and the Accent ranked tops

in its category in J.D. Power and Associates Vehicle

Dependability Study.

There are more smart reasons than ever to purchase Hyundai. Hyundai Canada

offers vehicles to suit any consumer’s needs – from entry level to luxury to sports

performance. Hyundai Canada’s sales results are proving this,

and now Hyundai is in Moose Jaw!

By this time you may have received notification from General Motors of Canada or heard through various means, that Saturn Canada will cease retail operations in Canada before the end of this year.

As you are our valued customer, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your business and to share with you great news. Although equally disappointed that this great brand will, for now at least, not be sold in Canada, we want to reassure you that we will remain here for you and your vehicle’s maintenace needs. We have been truly blessed with a fiercely loyal customer base and want to assure you that the customer focused, award winning service you’ve always received will not change, nor will the values that we apply to every end of our business.

Between now and the end of the year, we will transform into a great new retail identity focusing on premium pre-owned vehicles and a continuing commitment to provide you with the very best warranty approved parts and service support to meet your vehicle’s requirements. We want to assure you that any complimentary programs that you currently enjoy, will not cease but, in fact, will strengthen under our new look.

In the coming months we will keep you apprised of events as they unfold. We will work with you to facilitate the Saturn warranty transition but want to assure you that we, with our years of Saturn specific training, still qualify as the best independent choice for your maintenance and warranty coverage option.

In closing, I want to once again thank you for your past support and thank you for your anticipated support moving forward.

Yours truly,

Rick PontoRetailerSaturn of Regina

Herbie - 1963 Volkswagen Beetle Ragtop Sedan

The Volkswagen Beetle has several firsts to its credit. It was the first European car to sell a million vehicles in a year, and more cars have been sold than any other individual model. The Volkswagen (which literally means "people's car") Beetle, was indeed one of the most popular cars to be ever produced. More endearing and human than probably any other car

to be made, the choice of the Beetle as "Herbie - The car with feelings" could not have been more appropriate.

Herbie made his first appearance in "The Love Bug", which released in 1968, and was one of the most successful Walt Disney Films.

The Beetle featured in three of its sequels - Herbie Rides Again, Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo and Herbie Goes Bananas. The car has numerous gadgets like doors that open

automatically, and gears and pedals in the rear.

A comparison between softball and baseball can easily be made as softball is directly descended from baseball and therefore, it contains some important similarities. Despite this fact, however, there are also several important differences. The primary reason for these differences is that soft-ball was originally intended to be played indoors. It would be a lot easier to talk about the differences between these two, but we are here to talk about their similarities.

Softball shares many similarities with baseball. It’s a nine-a-side game played on a grass diamond, with a batter attempting to hit pitches and get onto base. Softball was developed as a game for women, dating back to the late 19th century and first reaching national prominence during World War II as a replacement for the decimated baseball league. Because of the draft for the war at that time, the sport has been almost completely transformed.

Even though softball started as an indoor version of baseball, these two games have evolved into two completely separate sports with different sets of rules and playing conditions. Both of them involve four main activities

or skills: throwing, including pitching and fielding; catching; batting; and base running. The main difference in how these games are played is the technique by which the ball is pitched to the batter.

Some of the rules in baseball and softball are similar too. For example, slap bunting rules are the same for both but used more often in softball. Substitution rules are basically the same, but differences are present here

too. Fast pitch softball is played with a twelve-inch ball, and metal bats. The distance between the each base is 60 feet long each base. From the pitchers mound to home plate it measures 43 feet in length. The pitching circle is 12 feet in diameter. From all these characteristics, you can say that baseball and softball are not sports based on player strength, but of explosion and intelligence.

Another aspect we should talk about is the similarities or differences between baseball and softball bats. Take the size of the barrel. Softball bats have a maximum barrel diameter of 2 ¼”, making it a bit difficult to make solid contact with the ball. On the other hand, baseball bats have a maximum diameter of 2 ¾” and have a longer range. The similarity nowadays, for both baseball and softball bats, is that bats are made of special composites. These materials are made up of carbon, glass and fibers embedded in a polymer matrix make. Due to these materials, bats are now lighter, stiffer and stronger.

So, there you have it - similarities and differences between baseball and softball. Even though they look alike and have many similarities, remember that these are two completely different sports.

If you love to ride a motorcycle, either as the driver or the passenger, there are probably many reasons that you’re an enthusiast. After all, riding a motorbike is one of the most liberating experiences that can be enjoyed on a regular basis. You love the freedom that you get from riding a motorcycle, and the brotherhood. But like many riders, you might also worry about safety.

For those riders for whom safety is a top concern, full face motorcycle helmets are a great buy. As much fun as riding a motorcycle can be, it can also be very dangerous. The

worst part is it might not even be something that you do, but what drivers of other vehicles may do that inadvertently hurts you. Full face helmets are a great way to maximize your protection, they have many built in safety features and protections. They can also look really cool while you’re riding.

There are many different levels of full face motorcycle helmets. They can be as inexpensive at seventy dollars, or can cost as much as 400. Much of what differs is in the optional features. Recently helmet manufacturers have gone above and beyond to make sure that their helmets are safer than they have ever been. Not only that, they are constantly striving to make their helmets cool looking to match the style of both you and your bike.

When you’re looking for full face motorcycle helmets, there are some features which are standard. Do remember that you should only buy a helmet if it meets Department of Transportation guidelines. DOT is a safety standard that should be a minimum when buying your full face helmet. To really step the safety up a notch, consider a SNELL rated helmet. They will definitely cost more, but the difference will be in the safety levels maintained in the construction process.

A great reason that a full face helmet offers protection is how much coverage you get. Your head, both the top and sides, and your chin are protected. This helps to minimize damage from falls. Just having the full protection on all sides of your head will make a huge difference if ever there is the situation where a wreck occurs. It could literally be the difference between walking away from a wreck or not walking at all.

In many full face motorcycle helmets,

you get the added benefit of shock absorption found in layers in the helmet. In the event of a fall or crash, this will help to stabilize and cushion you.

Many full face helmets also come standard with UV resistant face shields. This helps to protect your eyes from sun damage, while the shield is also protecting you from rocks and weather. Shields for full face helmets are very easy to change out, so you can have one shield that is tinted or mirrored for daytime riding and then another set of shields that are used for night driving. Some full face helmets can be used in snow and have special shields made for snow use. So they can truly be versatile and meed most of your safety and style needs while riding.

If you’re interested in a high level of protection, invest in a full face motorcycle helmet. It has many features and benefits not found in other helmets, and will help to keep you safe while you’re riding.

Whether you’ve invested a large sum in your fishing rods or just have a lot of sentimental attachment to the fishing rods you’re currently using, you want to make sure you know how to properly care for them so they will last a long time.

The tips below will help you ensure that your favorite fishing rods will have a long and happy life as part of your fishing equipment.

Post Fishing Care for Fishing RodsOnce you finish fishing for the day, you might be tempted to just toss your rod back in the car and then back in the closet when you return home. That’s not a good idea. First, you never want to put a wet rod back in its sheath. If you were fishing in saltwater, all of that salt from the rod will end up getting into the sheath and cause future damage. No matter what type of water you are using for fishing you should wipe down your rod thoroughly with a dry, soft cloth before putting it back in its sheath. If for some reason, you aren’t able to do this, you should wipe it down as soon as you return home and wash the sheath to remove anything that might have gotten into the material thanks to the water.

If you don’t plan to use it for an extended period of time, let it dry and then return it to its sheath. For storage, make sure to hang the sheath on a hook or hanger. If possible, do not just lean your rod against a wall. This can

not only cause damage to the rod but it’s also an easy way for your fishing rods to get broken accidentally.

Cleaning Your Fishing RodsLike all types of sporting equipment, your fishing rods are going to need some thorough cleaning from time to time. How often depends greatly on how frequently you’re going fishing and what type of fishing you’re doing. For example, salt water fishing is going to require more frequent cleaning than fresh water fishing.

To clean your rod, you’ll need a soft cloth and lukewarm water mixed with soap. Get the cloth wet then ring it out before rubbing it over your rod gently. It’s also a good idea to use an old toothbrush to clean out dirt and debris that collect around the guide rings and in other hard to reach parts of the fishing rods.

Inspecting Your Fishing RodsNever just take it for granted that your fishing rods are in great shape. You might find out the hard way that they’ve been slowly damaged by a minor problem that was never taken care of. For example, if water has gotten under the guide rings and start to cause rusting the rod can be in trouble and the ring should be replaced as soon as possible. To find out that problem, you need to be doing routine inspections of your equipment.

(NC)-Ever look out across a lake or ocean to find boaters cruising along with no care in the world? You’re not imagining. Boaters are more social, have better relationships and lead healthier lifestyles than those who have stayed ashore, according to a recent national survey conducted by Angus Reid Strategies. The survey also reports Canadian boaters lead happier lives than non-boaters. And here’s why:

Healthier than ever

• The more you boat, the healthier you are. The survey found that those who had been on a boat more than ten times are less likely to call in sick (37%) than occasional or non-boaters (24%).

Looking good and feeling good

• Avid boaters (41%) are more likely than non-boaters (21%) to report feeling confident about themselves on a regular basis.

Boaters dive right in

• More than half of avid boaters say ‘I Love You’ to theirsignificant others daily, while less than one in three non-boaters feel the love.

Boaters make a splash entertaining friends and family

• Nearly three out of four (74%) boaters say they entertain at least once a week, while only slightly more than half (57%) of non-boaters do the same.

“Most boaters look to time on the water as one of the best ways to spend quality time with friends and family,” said Tracey Hart from Discover Boating, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping more Canadians get on the water and experience the boating lifestyle.

DiscoverBoating.ca is a comprehensive online resource that includes interactive tools and tips to help you select the best boat for your lifestyle and budget. Visit the site to research boat shows across the country and find destinations where you can become part of the Canadian boating community.
