Sensors are unlocking new insights Today, advanced sensor technology is rapidly changing how business is

done. By giving sensors human capa bilities, businesses are doing things

they never thought possible. The Internet of Things (IoT) is helping power

new revenue streams, eliminating costly waste and creating a competitive

advantage for smart businesses.

Flex/force sensorsFlex and force sensors also contribute forms of “touch” to a device. Both of these kinds of sensors operate on the basis of resistance.

The buttonA button is a digital sensor that allows you to open or close a circuit. When the circuit is closed, the device connected to the button reads a voltage equal to the source voltage of the circuit, which equates to a logical value of one. When the circuit is open, the device reads a voltage equal to ground, or a logical zero.

Temperature sensors Sensors that can detect heat include thermistors, temperature sensors and thermocouples. Thermistors work by changing resistance in response to changes in temperature. Temperature sensors provide linear analog output voltage that directly corresponds to the temperature at the sensor. Thermocouples generate a small voltage by combining the terminals of two dissimilar metals.

Capacitive touch sensorsCapacitive touch senors detect touch by the use of changes in the capacitance of an electrode or a grid of electrodes. Capacitive touch sensors make it possible for us to interact with smartphones, tablets, and touch-enabled PCs without the need for a stylus.

Touc

hA better feel for businessFor humans, our sense of touch is critical to interacting with the world. The same is true for machines. Through a wide array of connected sensors, machines and devices are using the sense of touch to be smarter than ever, so you can be too.

SeeLight sensors

The most common light sensor is a photocell or photoresistor. Photocells operate by changing their resistance based on the amount of light detected. Other types of light sensors include ambient light sensors, RGB light sensors, UV sensors, and even more sophisticated gesture sensors.

Barcode scannerA barcode scanner is a specialized sensor that is designed for pattern recognition. As the laser light moves, the reflection from the barcode being scanned is received by a sensor that outputs an analog signal. This signal is received by a converter, which then interprets the incoming analog signal and turns it into a digital signal.

Camera & depth sensorsCameras can provide devices with variations on the ability to see. Cameras aren’t limited to the visible spectrum, they can be used for color and facial recognition. Depth sensors can also be used to map the world around them, for example, by scanning 3D objects for replication or modification.

Reflectance sensorA reflectance sensor uses an infrared (IR) emitter paired with a photodiode to measure the reflectivity of a surface to IR light. One of the main uses for reflectance sensors in the hobbyist arena is to create line-following robots.

Giving machines the gift of sightOur sense of sight allows us to instantly adapt to changing environments. The same is true for machines. Through sensors, machines can detect light and dark, colors, objects, and patterns then adapt accordingly. It’s helping smart business owners see their business from a new perspective.

MicrophoneMicrophones can be used to provide devices with the ability to sense the presence of an audio signal, and with some straightforward math and code, even display what that signal looks like.

Ultrasonic range finderUltrasonic sensors are great for measuring distances and detecting objects within a specified proximity. An ultrasonic sensor emits an ultra-high frequency pulse of sound and then measures the time it takes for the reflected sound to return to the sensor.

Piezo vibration sensorPiezoelectric sensors can convert movement or vibration into a small alternating current (or vice-versa). Piezo buzzers are often used in small electronics where a speaker would be impractically large.

HearListen

to what you’ve been missingHumans use their sense of hearing for a variety of purposes, from communication to identifying potential threats. Sensors can now enable your electronic devices to function in much the same way. They can easily capture audio snippets and detect approaching objects and movements.

IMU sensorsIMUs typically combine an accelerometer and a gyro on a single board or chip to provide a much more accurate picture of orientation and movement than either sensor can provide separately. IMUs can be found in robotics and drone aircraft.

Accelerometer sensorsAccelerometers can be used for many purposes, such as measuring acceleration in vehicles, monitoring machinery for vibration errors, and recording human movement through pedometers, such as those found in fitness trackers.

Gyro sensorsGyros measure angular velocity and are not affected by gravity. Gyro sensors are used in radio control helicopters, anti-shake circuitry in cameras, and video game controllers, just to name a few.

Balan

ceBring balance to your businessThe human sense of balance is extremely complex, but critical to the way we function. So how do you keep your machines in better balance so your business can not only survive, but thrive? Sensors can now measure distance, velocity, acceleration and other important data that can be vital to your business success.

Adapt

For humans, the ability to sense is only valuable if there is ability to process the information and adapt accordingly. Machines do this through microprocessors and software. And just like the human brain, access to historical data helps machines make more informed decisions over time.

AT&T provides everything you need to empower your business to become more intelligent and agile through the Internet of Things. We can get your machines connected and ready to plug into your business brain.
