ABOUT US

The provision of any personal care by staff for a participant is beyond our capability and cannot be expected.

COVER PHOTO Fall Pumpkins. Photographer: Wayne Broadhead

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Fall is upon us and old man winter is just around the corner! For me, November is the time to reflect on what we are thankful for. I am thankful for my friends and family and YOU. What are you thankful for? Veteran’s Day will always be special here. This year Ray Martin will be our speaker. If any of you have not turned in a photo of yourself in the military, please do so at the office. And, if you don’t have a military photo, please bring in another photo at that time or we can take one at the office. We want all included. We have people already signed up for some of the Christmas excursions! Poinsettias and Presents (11/16/19), The Victorian Country Christmas (12/05/19) and Van Dusen Festival of Lights (12/12/19) should get everyone in the Christmas spirit! We also have planned a tour at our own Van Wingerden’s Nursery to see the poinsettias in full bloom! If interested, please sign up at the office. For those that don’t drive, we can carpool The Community Thanksgiving Dinner is back this year and will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2019. A huge thank you to the United Church of Christ, Healthy Youth Coalition and the American Legion Riders for stepping up and making sure everyone has a place to go! All are invited. And a reminder that we will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday and that incudes Friday and Saturday (11/28/19 - 11/30/19). November 11th was my mother’s birthday. One thing she taught me was to give back and serve. She always volunteered whether it was at school when we were young or at church or at her ladies’ clubs. She always told me “the only way to get anything out of an organization you join is to become part of it.” Thank you to all the volunteers who make the Center what it is by becoming “part of it.”

Meanwhile, in Vancouver, Sophie chafes under the social restrictions of a pregnant woman on her own and yearns to travel alongside her husband. She, too, explores nature, through the new art of photography, unaware that the coming winter will test her own courage and faith to the breaking point.

Volunteer of the Month

November Bi r thdays

RICHARD DRATH Richard was born and raised in the small town of Visalia in Central California. After living in many parts of the state for 55 years, he moved with his husband to Sparks, NV in 2003, thinking it would be their retirement home. But thirteen years later they packed all their belongings, sold their cars, rented out their home and took off on a two-year travel adventure to Europe. Upon their return, they spent three months renting in Birch Bay in late 2017. That is when Richard discovered the Blaine Senior Center. He first volunteered in the office, then he got his food handlers card so he could also volunteer preparing lunches one morning a week. Since officially moving to Birch Bay in January of 2018, he has helped with several special events, including the Spring Tea, our 50th Anniversary Hoe Down, and he even helped cater the Angels Descending event last year.

Richard spent most of his professional career working for non-profits; five years with Easter Seals and 25 years as an executive with the American Cancer Society. Since retiring to Birch Bay, he spends much of his time volunteering. He also helps out at the Bellingham Food Bank and is very active with the Bellingham Garden Street United Methodist Church. He is most proud of a food distribution program he started at his church in Reno and his work organizing teams of volunteers to help with the recovery efforts in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

Richard and his husband Alan just celebrated their 40th anniversary.

Thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court, they were finally able to get married on their 35

th anniversary. When they are not out exploring the Great

Northwest or cruising, Richard enjoys working on his family’s genealogy. He has traveled across the US visiting old hometowns, scanning through reels and reels of microfilm newspaper records and wandering through cemeteries searching for family gravesites. Richard in Cheltenham, England

Tis the Season for Foodborne Illness Julie Meyers, MS, RD

Meals on Wheels and More

For most people, Thanksgiving is largest meal they cook and/or eat all year. However, from shopping for ingredients to reheating leftovers, there are many opportunities for foodborne illness to occur. While we may become wiser with age, people over age 65 are also at increased risk for foodborne illness and often take longer to recover. Luckily, a few food safety tips can allow people of any age to enjoy holiday meals safely. Separate raw meat, poultry and seafood from other foods in your grocery cart and in the refrigerator.

If purchasing a fresh turkey, use within 4 days of purchasing. Frozen turkeys may be purchased up to a year in advance.

The safest way to thaw frozen turkey is in the refrigerator. Allow 24 hours for every 5 pounds of turkey. Keep your thawing turkey in the bottom of your fridge on a tray that can catch drips.

A USDA study found that more than 80% of people inadvertently cross contaminate other food with bacteria from turkey.

Prevent cross-contamination by washing hands frequently. Raw meats should always be kept on separate surfaces. Also, countertops, cutting boards, and utensils should be sanitized after each step in the food preparation process. Chlorine-based sanitation wipes work best for surfaces. Do not wash your turkey before cooking. Rinsing raw poultry can cause bacteria to be splashed around the kitchen.

Cook turkey thoroughly. Use a digital thermometer to ensure that the turkey has reached 165 degrees in the thickest part of the breast, wing and thigh. Stuffing, whether inside or outside of the bird must also reach 165 degrees to kill harmful bacteria.

Chill leftovers quickly to halt bacteria growth. Don’t leave leftovers out for more than 2 hours. Leave warm foods uncovered in the fridge until a temperature of 40 degrees is reached and then cover. Store leftovers in shallow containers. Cut turkey off the bone before refrigerating and store stuffing separately from meat. Cool leftovers completely before packing and freezing in airtight containers. Leftovers will last up to 4 days in the fridge.

Always reheat leftovers to 165 degrees to kill any harmful bacteria (This applies to all leftover food at any time of year).

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving! Any questions? Contact Julie at (360) 733-4030 x1025.
