Christine’s Comments
Please support Senior Services on 10/9/21.
Come connect with friends and support senior services at our annual Compassion walk on Saturday, October 9. Our walk is for people of any age, and any ability, to enjoy any number of “laps” around our township campus. If walking the safety path does not appeal to you, then you may saunter through our community garage sale or tap your toes to the music of the Woodward Avenue Jazz Orchestra. Complete your visit with burgers, available for purchase, from our friends at American House. Advance registration required.
The event is “ala cart” and registration is required separately for the Walk, the meal and if you wish to be a vendor in the garage sale. There is no fee for shopping or the wonderful live music. With a little something for everyone, we hope that you will join us.
Our new financial reality requires new ways to secure funding and we are working to add more ways for you to contribute in enjoyable ways. Your ideas for fundraising will be considered and appreciated. For details on our financial status see page 19, and please email any suggestions.
Wishing You Peace and Health,
Christine Tvaroha, Director

The Fortunes
Friday, November 5 9:45 AM - 11:30 AM
OLLI READS! Is a shared experience where we read and discuss a common book and then come together for a presentation by the author, followed by discussion. Peter Ho Davies’ novel The Fortunes has been aptly described as “sly, funny, intelligent, and artfully structured.” The Fortunes expands the notion of a multigenerational novel by moving beyond the saga of a single family to the story of Chinese Americans beginning in the 1860’s - Ah Ling, a laundryman and railway worker in the 1860’s; Anna May Wong a film star in 1920’s and 30’s; Vincent Chin, a young man beaten to death by two auto workers in Detroit in 1982; and finally, a Chinese American and his wife who travel to China to adopt a baby girl. Joyce Carol Oates describes it as “A prophetic work, with passages of surpassing beauty…”
Davies is a contemporary writer of Welsh and Chinese descent. He was born and raised in Coventry, England. He studied physics at Manchester University and then English at Cambridge University. In 1992, he moved to the United States to study in the graduate creative writing program at Boston University.
Davies is the author of the novels A Lie Someone Told You About Yourself (2021), The Fortunes (2016) and The Welsh Girl (2007), as well as the story collections The Ugliest House in the World (1997) and Equal Love (2000).

Durable Medical Equipment Loan Closet
We collect donations of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, shower benches and currently have a high demand for transport wheelchairs. We have limited storage and varied stock so please call to confirm a need for your item in advance. Once confirmed, you may drop it off at the senior center’s front door.
Items must be clean, gently used and in good condition. We will “quarantine” them for a period prior to future loans.
This equipment is available for free, short term use by BT residents. Please call 248-723-3500 to confirm availability of item and schedule curbside pickup at the center.
Friendly Callers
For many years BTSS volunteers have been
calling their neighbors to check in and have
uplifting conversation. These kind folks, with
comforting voices, reassure people that they are not alone, and their family members appreciate the valuable social connection.
Now the need is even greater. If you or someone you know would like to receive a phone call, we would be happy to include you in our program.
You choose the days you wish to receive calls each week. Volunteers call Monday through Friday between 9 and11 AM for friendly conversation and to check on well being. Choose one day or all five.

Structural Underfunding
For years, the Senior Service Millage property taxes covered 50% of our budget. To balance, we assess participation fees and service copays, write grants and hold fundraisers.
In 2019, we experienced a major change in expenses. Due to a judge’s decision in a 2018 water lawsuit all township departments must pay for the services they receive from other departments. While the MI Court of Appeals overturned the decision in 2021, the practice of paying for all services received remains in effect.
From 2009 to 2019, we received vital services like IT, accounting, payroll, human resources, building maintenance, grounds maintenance, motor pool services, etc. without contributing to the costs. If not provided to us by other departments 24/7, we would pay for them via private companies. This year we will pay $390,000.00.
We could not succeed without these services but we now have a structural deficit. The millage now pays for the building costs but covers only 8% of pre-COVID staffing levels. For limited hours and a smaller staff, it will cover only 22%. There is no funding for programs other than donations, grants and participation fees.
Our current millage rate is .2312 and for one dollar of property taxes paid by residents, roughly one-half of one cent supports senior services. Yes, half of a penny. Only 28% stays in the township for all services. The 72% balance funds education, county services, the library, etc.
The pandemic impacts are difficult but short term; this issue needs long-term resolution. We have been diligently cutting and studying ways to increase revenue from a variety of sources. Visits to the center in 2019 were underfunded, on average, by $5.60 per visit. This figure is the result of dividing the new expenses by visits to the center or $390,000/70,000 visits = $5.60.
We skillfully stretch resources while providing excellent services. We will continue that tradition by working together and pursuing creative solutions. I have seen generous responses from this community for things that add value and provide key services to themselves or their neighbors. Stay tuned for more information and opportunities for input in the months to come. We also ask for your consideration, generosity and understanding when you see requisite fundraisers and modest fee increases. We need your support more than ever before.
Thank you.
