Beware of Secret-Shopping Scam FTC warns about the return of an old scheme
The Federal Trade Commission is warning that an old scam involving fraudulent checks and shopping has again reared its head.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning consumers to watch out for the resurgence of a long-standing scam that combines fake checks with secret shopping.
“We’ve been hearing a lot about it lately,” Emma Fletcher of the FTC’s Division of Consumer and Business Education wrote in an online consumer advisory.
“Here’s how it starts. You get a check in the mail with a job offer as a secret shopper. You deposit the check and see the funds in your account a few days later, and the bank even tells you the check has cleared.
“Now you’re off to the store you’ve been asked to shop at and report back on, often a Walmart. Your first assignment is to test the in-store money transfer service, like Western Union or MoneyGram, by sending some of the money you deposited. Or you might be told to use the money to buy reloadable cards or gift cards, such as iTunes cards. You’re instructed to send pictures of the cards or to give the numbers on the cards.
“Fast-forward days or weeks to the unhappy ending. The bank finds out the check you deposited is a fake, which means you’re on the hook for all that money.
Banks make money available from deposited checks in a few days, but a fake check can take weeks to be discovered. “By the time you try to get the money back from the money transfer service, the scammers are long gone, and they’ve taken all the money off the gift cards, too,” Fletcher advised.
The lesson: “If anyone ever asks you to deposit a check and then wire or send money in any way, you can bet it’s a scam.”

Normal Aging Process or Vitamin Deficiency?
Vanessa Berg, MS LRD CDE
Many people older than 50 do not get enough vitamin B12. This vitamin is found in milk and dairy foods, meat, fish (especially salmon), poultry and eggs.
Some medications can interfere with the ab-sorption of B12. Proton Pump Inhibitors like Prilosec and Nexium reduce the absorption of B12 from food (but not in supplement form). Metformin, a medication for diabetes, significantly decreases absorption as well. A supplement form of B12 is recommended for these individuals.
Healthcare providers often overlook this vitamin. Some experts estimate that up to 30 percent of our senior population is deficient!
Often we assume the symptoms of loss of balance, muscle weakness and memory problems are associated with aging. A supplement of Vitamin B12 could be the answer.

Spending Time in the Garden Plants Seeds for Good Cognitive Health
When was the last time you looked forward to weed-ing? If the answer is never, that might change: New studies show that spending time working in your yard or garden helps the body and brain in some of the
ways more strenuous activities do. A European review on studies about the ben-efits gardening has for older adults found the activities increased feelings of accomplish-ment and a sense of well-being.
The authors added that gardening protected the brain by decreasing sadness and depres-sion, both of which can contribute to a decline in cognitive skills.
The studies weren’t designed to analyze the mechanisms that bring about the changes in the brain, but one theory is that repetitive mo-tions like weeding and deadheading (remov-ing old blooms) bring about positive feelings of control.
A study from the Netherlands found that 30 mintues of gardening decreased levels of cor-tisol, a hormone that increases stress levels, in the brain.
Research done at the Landscape and Human Health Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign finds that nature plays a big role in eliminating the harmful side effects of stress. While the studies weren’t done on gardeners, director Frances Kuo drew com-parisons between gardening and relating to nature.
Spending time working in a sunny garden, compared with being hunched over a com-puter, uses a passive kind of attention, said Kuo. “Nature,” she said, “takes us out of that freaked-out state when our brains are fatigued” from dealing with all the demands of daily life. When our brains are fatigued, cognitive skills suffer. For example, she said, “Try doing taxes when you’re already tired. It’s painful.”
She added that whether people spend time in nature, or even contemplate a photo of nature, they become clear-headed, and can reason and problem-solve again.
“I don’t want to overstate it, but if you have the resorative effect of nature, you’re dailing back years on your brain.”
Weeding, anyone?
