Match ReportsU17G V SAINTS 7-5 LOSS

On paper we should not have even had a chance against such a strong St Marys team which boasts multiple Under 18 and Under 15 state level players. The Saints team had our number earlier in the season but progressively we pegged them back resulting in a very evenly matched up contest with our last round being a draw. This Preliminary final was nothing different. An evenly matched game but we had the belief that we could win! We got on the score board first with a great cross to Sydney who was in the right spot and pushed in an easy goal. A great team effort. The rest of the game was very evenly played with each team having their chances.

Saints scored next with a very good play which was nearly impossible for Rachel to defend in goals. It was a slight laps in concentration giving Saints the opportunity. The rest of the game was a real arm wrestle. Full time had us 1-1 so we went into golden goal extra time 7 then 7 minutes. We came out aggressive and really dominated both 7 minute sessions but the Saints goalie played outstandingly and kept Saints in the play. Unfortunately sometime during the second 7 minute play, Fayth coped a pretty brutal stick to the bridge of her nose resulting in a trip to the emergency department (which I hear she did not actually leave until the eventual end of the game because she wanted to see the result). While helping Fayth off the field and trying to stop her bleeding nose, she said to me, “As soon as this stops bleeding, I’m going back on”… “Hmm perhaps not” I said, “I suspect you’ll be going to the emergency department”. But anyway, It came down to one on ones. First lot of 5 1x1’s the scores were still level. Unfortunately Saints got one up

on us in the second set resulting in us going down in the end. A special mention must go to Rachel who usually doesn’t play in goals as goalie but did a superb job of it during our final series and especially for our very last game of the season. I know there was lots or tears at the end of our game – but we left the field proud of what we had accomplished during the game and for the season. I was a very proud coach. Dave

U14BOYS V BANKS 3-2 WIN (GOLDEN GOAL EXTRA TIME)

Wow, what a game! The match was a cliff hanger all the way. First quarter 0-1 down, second quarter levelled 1-1, third quarter 1-2 down, fourth quarter, literally seconds before full time the boys earned a short corner which they were able to convert to bring the scores 2-2 and force the game into extra time. First period of golden goal extra time and Banks get a short corner which the boys were able to defend. We then won a short corner but unfortunately weren’t able to convert. Then, with only seconds remaining on

the clock in the second period of extra time, James received the ball into the circle from a great pass and managed to put a shot between the gaol keeper's legs to win the match! If I didn’t have a heart condition before the game I was certainly heading towards one at the end. All of the boys played magnificently well. Everyone in the team pulled together and stuck to the game plan and helped support each other with lots of positive talk both on the field and at each of the breaks. The conditions weren’t great as the weather was hot and humid and the boys were really feeling the heat with no reserves. Jack H again played with a sore foot and limited ability to run, while James got hit on the ankle and had to retire part way through the third quarter for treatment, but was keen to return to the field to support the team despite not being 100%. Sticking to our simple game plan of making the ball do the work as well as ensuring we concentrated on the basics again paid dividends. The boys where able to run Banks ragged and in the heat, and with extra time on the clock, that played to our advantage with the key Banks players ending up walking around in the later parts of the game. So, now to this weekend and the Grand Final against NUTs. The boys have a great opportunity to go from the bottom of the ladder last year, to the very top this weekend if they win, and although NUTs are the in-form team right now, I think they boys are a real chance for a second upset in two weeks.

Despite this, come win or loose this weekend, the boys have had a sensational year. They have all worked hard and come together brilliantly as a team. Our U11’s playing up to U14 this year have also done exceptionally well and I hope we can welcome more of them next year into the team as the team grows and matures its hockey. East Darwin men’s hockey certainly has a bright future ahead of it if these guys stay in the sport! Bring on Saturday. GO STORMERS!!!!!!!! Greenie
