Professor Thomas Lunner is a senior scientist and research area manager of Eriksholm Research Centre in Denmark’s Cognitive Hearing Science research team. Additionally, he works as a professor at Linköping University.
Prof Lunner’s work in the 90s, led almost directly to the invention and launch of the “DigiFocus”, the world’s first mass-produced digital hearing aid.
Recently Prof Lunner developed cognitive methods for assessment of hearing aid signal processing where conventional speech in noise tests are insensitive, that is at high signal to noise ratios and high performance levels. He has, in collaboration with Linköping University, shown that aggressive noise reduction can improve memory for the hearing impaired.* Most recently he has also worked with pupillometry in collaboration with VUMC Amsterdam to verify pupillometry as an objective means of documenting listening effort.

In 2017, Prof Lunner has been awarded a William Demant Fellowship for his contributions to cognitive hearing science as his latest major achievement in a long career with many great achievements. Prof Lunner has published three book chapters and 101 papers in peer-reviewed journals since 1991. He has had 15 patents granted and 15 published patent applications in various areas (digital signal processing, hearing aid technology, methods for hearing and hearing aid assessment, cognitive technology and assessment, interceptive sports).

Assistant Professor Marcin Poreba is the Head of Mass Cytometry Facility at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology, Poland. He obtained his PhD in Chemistry at Wroclaw University of Technology in 2014. During his PhD studies, he co-developed a HyCoSuL (Hybrid
Combinatorial Substrate Library), a chemical platform that is currently the state-of-the-art technology for the development of protease selective substrates, inhibitors, and activity-based probes (17 papers in peer-reviewed journals). He was then recruited as a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow in Salvesen Laboratory at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in La Jolla, CA, USA (2014-2017). During this period he leveraged the HyCoSuL chemistry to obtain selective probes targeting cancer-associated proteases for in vitro and in vivo applications (15 publications; 7 first-author and 6 corresponding authorships in peer-review journals including Nature Protocols and Chemical Reviews). He recently relocated to Wroclaw University of Science and Technology to establish a new laboratory that creates novel visualisation platform for dissecting the role of proteases in cancer.

THURSDAY 21 MARCH 2019
Bryant Stokes Neuroscience Seminar Series 3pm Thursday 21st March, Sarich Neuroscience Research Institute Building ground floor seminar room QEII Medical Centre Dr Phillip Ward: Neuroimaging of cerebral physiology. Abstract: The human brain is a metabolically hungry organ, accounting for 10 times its fair share of energy consumption by weight. Without nearby fat stores, it relies on a continuous and responsive supply of nutrient-rich blood. Acute disruption to the blood supply of the brain, e.g. stroke, can be fatal in minutes. However, little is known about the impact of the gradual deterioration in cerebro-vascular function due to age or injury. In this seminar, Dr Phillip Ward will provide an overview of the MRI and PET methods available to investigate cerebral physiology in vivo, along with the pitfalls and confounders they present. He will also share his recent findings in: 1. separating the vascular and neural compartments of fMRI using PET-MR 2. identifying the physiological confounds in functional connectomes 3. mapping vascular reserve in the elderly. Brief Biography: Dr Ward is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Monash University, working within the Monash Institute of Cognitive and Clinical Neurosciences. He develops and integrates methods for analysing human brain physiology and metabolism. Following a PhD dedicated to imaging cerebral blood vessels and quantifying blood-oxygenation with MRI, his work has expanded to include imaging neuroinflammation, glucose-metabolism and dynamic approaches to mapping cerebral metabolism. Phillip is a VESKI Victoria Fellow and a Centre Fellow within the ARC Centre of Excellence for Integrative Brain Function. The seminar will be live streamed to Murdoch University (contact [email protected]) and ECU ([email protected]).

BiographyDr Chipps received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1972. He was a paediatric resident for two years before serving in the Air Force at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota for two years as a general paediatrician. He then completed a combined allergy and pulmonary fellowship at Johns Hopkins and spent one year on the faculty in the paediatric respiratory sciences division. He has been in private practice in Sacramento since 1979. He is the medical director of respiratory therapy and the cystic fibrosis centre at Sutter Medical Centre in Sacramento. He is also the associate medical director of the Sutter Community Hospitals Sleep Laboratory which he established in 1984. He is board certified in paediatric pulmonology and allergy and clinical immunology. He is the Past-President of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Associate Professor Rebecca Lim is a stem cell biologist specialising in gestational tissue derived stem cells. She holds joint appointments with the Department of Obstetrics and
Gynaecology, Monash University and The Ritchie Centre, Hudson Institute of Medical Research. A/Prof Lim is an NHMRC Career Development Fellow (Industry) where her work aims to bring novel automated solutions to cell manufacturing for the regenerative medicine sector. A/Prof Lim leads the Amnion Cell Biology team which has been investigating the regenerative potential of human amnion epithelial cells (hAECs). Her research team has uncovered mechanisms through which the hAECs modulate inflammatory events and bolster endogenous repair processes. They have demonstrated that hAECs are able to directly influence the stem cell niche in order to bring about tissue regeneration. This work has now progressed to clinical trials across multiple clinical indications including premature babies with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and cerebral palsy, and adults with liver cirrhosis, Crohn’s related perianal fistulas and acute ischaemic stroke.

How to make Clinical Research Ethical by DesignFriday, 5 April 12:30 – 1:30PMEthics in research is often perceived as a bureaucratic hurdle to be struggled over. This seminar will instead show you how to embrace ethics as a powerful tool that can ensure your research is relevant and will meet its end point.
It will empower you as a researcher to fulfil all of your obligations more easily ensuring public trust in your work.
