i was a food runner at pub. i say “was” because though i love it here, i hope that for my sake i won’t need to run food for longer than i have to. i was a photojournalism student at temple, and the culmination of one of my classes required me to make a book. i had been leisurely shooting pictures at pub throughout the winter of 2012 and 2013, so i decided to use that series of photos as the material for my book. i figured after it was printed and bound i could add it the book the shelf in the upstairs party room. i’m presently considering just bringing this book in one day and leaving it there on the shelf without telling anyone. i’m not sure if i’ll actually do that yet or not, but you’re reading it now, so it doesn’t really matter what i decided to do. i’m a senior. this is my last semester, and a few days after i finish binding this book i will have graduated and, presumably, gone back to work.
i shot and edited all of these pictures with my current phone, an lg optimus g e970. its camera is pretty bad, but i principally bought it to store lots of music. the general design of this book — the typeface, the pabbit, ornate borders, etc. — is borrowed from the old menus. when i started, i had a mostly-destroyed iphone 4. it wasn’t until i got a new phone in the winter that i was able to actually take pictures, something that i had increasingly wanted to do during the previous six months or so.
i started at pub i early june of 2012. andy d’angelo, my current roommate and an old friend, got me the job. i started in the summer, which meant that pub was frequently dead. i was working full-time at an office at the time, so in a way the days i was coming in to work here were the most enjoyable days of that summer. it being summer also meant that everybody — jon, ed, palmer, missy, rob, dan, etc. — was down at the diving horse. at that time, i was running with joby, kim and tim. the summer ended and school started again. everyone came back from the beach, many of whom i was just being introduced to for the first time. ed opened fitler and made rob chef. rob took max. tim quit to go bus tables. andy didn’t come back but instead went to the mildred. michael went to fitler and missy became general manager. a bunch of cooks came and went. jon left to do his coffee thing, rival bros., full-time. it was a big deal. palmer ran the kitchen for a while, and then eli came down from new york to become the new chef. ed and dan closed the restaurant down for two and half weeks of renovations. just about everything changed, and ed keeps referring to this place as “pub and kitchen 2.0.”
all of my photos were taken prior to the renovations, pre-2.0, as it were. in that sense, it’s old pub, which i guess kind of validates this collection of pictures as a pseudo-historical document. as of this writing, it’s late april, and i’m probably scrabbling to get this book together in time for my end-of-semester deadline. it’s sunday, and yesterday i worked almost eighteen hours. this was my first job in a restaurant.
