Knut takes a cruise along the RhineHallo, liebe Freunde! I hope your New Year was off to a good start. Mine certainly was! Together with my family I spent the Christmas holidays exploring the small towns along the river Rhine, which is located in the southern and western parts of Germany.
The river cruise (Flusskreuzfahrt) started from Cologne and our first stop was in Rüdesheim am Rhein, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its Riesling wines and the Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett. This is a family-run museum of 350 mechanical musical instruments (Musikinstrumente). We also went for a stroll along the Drosselgasse, an old narrow lane famous for its cafés, restaurants, live music and small souvenir shops. Here we tasted
the typical Rüdesheimer Kaffee, which is basically coffee with a shot of Asbach Uralt brandy topped with whipped cream and flambéed directly at the guests’ table.
The ship then proceeded to the city of Mainz, where Johann Gutenberg, who invented the first printing
machine in the 15th century, was born. This is regarded as the most important invention of the
second millennium because books (Bücher) could finally be produced in large quantities in a short period
of time. The first book ever to be published was the Bible, which was printed here in Mainz and which is still on display at the Gutenberg Museum. This Bible is indeed very beautiful, as each page Gutenberg printed was later colourfully hand-painted.
New Year’s Eve (Silvester) and New Year were spent in Mannheim and Speyer respectively. Since it was snowing, my mum and siblings preferred staying on board the ship and participate in the various activities which the crew prepared for the guests. However, my dad and I decided to explore Mannheim on foot (zu Fuß). After World War II Mannheim was rebuilt in the typical 1950s style and with parallel streets crossing each other in the form of a grid. Passers-by could be seen carrying bags of firecrackers, to be burnt during countdown exactly before midnight (Mitternacht). On New Year’s Day, I woke up rather late after the previous night’s celebrations; adults celebrated with some German champagne (Sekt), while us kids enjoyed burning the firecrackers on the sundeck. Later in the afternoon we enjoyed a nice excursion in Speyer, a small town dominated by its cathedral (Dom), the Old Gate (Altpörtel) and the Jewish courtyard with its Mikveh (a bath used by the Jewish for ritual washing).
“I lost my heart in Heidelberg” is a verse from a famous German song. Heidelberg, located only 20 minutes away from Mannheim, is so beautiful that it’s easy to fall in love with it. The highlight of this town is definitely the castle ruins (Schlossruine), located on the Königstuhl hill, hence visible from everywhere in Heidelberg. The largest wine barrel in the world is found here at the castle. It can hold up to 220,000 litres of wine! Down in the city centre we searched for the Heidelberger Studentenkuß (Student’s Kiss). This is just a name of a delicious chocolate wafer, created here in Heidelberg by the confectioner Fridolin Knösel. We bought these exquisite wafers and ate them together on the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke).
Our ship made two more stops in Oberwesel and in Koblenz. On our way I couldn’t help but notice the numerous medieval castles along the river Rhine. Each one of these fortresses has its own story and legend. But perhaps the most renowned legend associated with the Rhine is that of the Lorelei.
As the legend goes, here lived a beautiful woman or a mermaid named Lorelei, who sat on the river’s edge singing whilst brushing her long blond hair (blonde Haare). As the sailors sailed the dangerous currents, they were distracted by her beauty and voice and wrecked their ships on the rocks (Felsen).
Our cruise ended on a funny note in Koblenz as this town has some weird attractions. There is, for example, one particular clock dial with a man’s face beneath it. His blue eyes (blaue Augen) keep swivelling from
one side to the other and every half an hour he sticks out his tongue. This is said to bring good luck to all onlookers. Another strange tourist attraction is the Fountain of the Naughty Boy (Schangelbrunnen), who occasionally spits water and sprays unwary passers-by. My brother was the victim. After such a beautiful experience on this river cruise, I look forward to visit Germany again soon.
