A MAGAZINE FOR STUDENTS FROM YEAR 5 UPWARDS ATTENDING PRIMARY SCHOOLS PRIMAR ISSUE NUMBER 11 MAI 2018 FOUNDED 1962 Tourism in Germany Zachary is a 10 year old boy, who will be travelling to Germany (Deutschland) next July with his parents (Eltern)! His parents booked the flights and the hotel (Hotel) in Berlin, the capital city (Hauptstadt) of Germany and they are really looking forward to spend a week (Woche) in this lovely city. Now, Zachary and his parents are trying to plan their holiday and they are searching videos and information (Information) on the internet (Internet). Berlin is one of the most interesting cities in the world and has a lot of tourist attractions. Zachary and his parents want to travel during summer (Sommer), as this is the perfect time for the family to take a break, as Zachary will be on holidays (Ferien). Apart from this, in winter (Winter), Berlin is very cold (kalt). Zachary found out that Berlin is located in the North West (Nordwest) of Germany and that the city has a population of more than 3 million people. This city is visited by a lot of tourists (Touristen) from different countries (Länder) every year, such as from Italy (Italien), United Kingdom (England) and Spain (Spanien). The family will fly directly to the Berlin Airport (Flughafen). Zachary found out that this city has a lot of sightseeing attractions, including the Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin wall, which used to divide Germany - East and West Germany until 1989. In Berlin, one can really experience the historical events of Berlin and Germany. During their stay in Berlin, Zachary and his parents are going to the German History Museum (Museum) and will also visit a lot of churches, including the famous St. Mary’s church (Kirche). They will try to go to the national parliament (Parlament) of Germany, where the political parties meet and work and to the cathedral (Dom) of Berlin. They will certainly visit the oldest zoo in Germany. This is the Berlin Zoological Garden (Zoologischer Garten Berlin). It is also the most famous - with about 1500 species and around 19,500 animals! Zachary is always hungry. He is looking for German traditional food, such as the Currywurst, a pork sausage with curry sauce or the different types of cheese (Käse). The family has also found out that there is also a restaurant (Restaurant) near the hotel, where they will be staying. Therefore, Zachary and his parents won’t have any problems to eat! Very close to this hotel, there are also very important shops, including a pharmacy (Apotheke), a supermarket (Supermarkt), a confectionary (Konditorei) and also a bakery (Bäckerei). Zachary is looking forward to this holiday in the capital city of Germany, Berlin. Since Zachary will also be choosing German in the secondary school, in Germany he will try to listen to and learn some German words.

“German is Easy and Fun”Summer 2018

A project aimed at Year 5 and Year 6 schoolchildrenattending Primary Schools and intended to introduce schoolchildren to

Germany – its land, its people and its language.

For this purpose a programme of 10 lessons of 90 minutes each under the guidance of trained teachers who will be using special games, materials and teaching aids has been prepared.

Lessons will take place at the German-Maltese Circle’s premises in Valletta. The fee is only €50 for the whole course. Free handouts, together with a Certifi cate of Attendance will be given to all children attending.
