ESTABLISHMENT

KEY POINTS TO GRASS & CLOVER ESTABLISHMENT

l Correct soil pH of grass and clover is 5.8-6.0 which also increases bacterial and worm activity

l P & K indexes of 2 are essential for strong grass and clover growth

l Compaction inhibits root growth and grass yield. Rectify at establishment

l Control any problem weeds, effective prevention of weed invasion is better than cure

l Weed grasses can dominate reseeds if not effectively desiccated before planting

l Take measures to control possible pest attacks, consider a pesticide mixed with the herbicide when desiccating the previous crop. This is particularly important when planting continuous grass

l Ensure a fine firm seed bed is achieved, firmness guarantees contact between sown seed and moisture which equals germination

l Sow at a depth of 10 to 15 mm, any deeper and germination is severally reduced

l Roll and roll again to provide soil to moisture contact and germination

l Consider a seed bed fertiliser a general recommendation for P & K indexes 2 would be 60 N, 75P and 60K (kg/ha) or consider iseed® treated seed ( see page 11 of brochure )

l Keep an eye out for slugs especially in wet seasons, every three weeks eggs can hatch, in warm conditions this could be every ten days

l Graze down to 3 to 6 cm at intervals during early establishment phase

iSeed

NUTRIENT COATED FORAGE SEED

The economic and environmental alternative to seed bed fertiliser.

Benefits

l Improved grass seed & clover establishmentl A unique seed coating of Nitrogen and Phosphate l The nutrients are immediately available to the vulnerable emerging seedlingsl Enhances root vigour, shoot growth and plant strengthl Feeds only the seed not the surrounding grass and weedsl Significantly improves seedling uptake efficiencyl Average of 30% more viable plants per acrel Environmentally friendlyl Highly cost effective at current fertiliser pricesl iSeed® is four times more efficient than standard seedbed fertilisers

Stress relief

The enhanced root and shoot development achieved with iSeed® is particularly important when the seedlings are under stress, for example late colder sowings, drought conditions and fields with poor residual fertility.

Using iSeed®

l No need for specialist establishment equipmentl The treatment doubles the weight of seedl 1 kg of iseed consists of u 50% seed mixture u 10% Nitrogen u 2% Phosphorus (4.6% P2O5) u 38% coating material

l Nitrogen and Phosphorus are the key grass nutrients to stimulate plant and root growth, iseed ensures theses are readily availablel The sowing rate for treated seed is between 23-25 kg per acre (55-60 kg ha)

Limited varieties of grass and clover available with iSeed® coating this year

LEGUMES

l Nitrogen (N) in legumes comes from the uptake of soil N and from the fixation of N from the atmospherel Only fixed N represents a true import of N, it is important that fixed N is optimized

Optimising N Fixation

l In forage situations consider removal of cut materials but don’t cut too frequentlyl Avoid returning cut and mulched material to legumesl Don’t apply high available N Organic manures to legumes e.g. slurry and poultry Manuresl Apply adequate P & K to ensure satisfactory growth of the legumes, particularly if large off takes occur as with silage cropsl Legumes only fix Nitrogen

Before the N from the legumes can be used by the next crop it has to be mineralized into plant forms (nitrate and ammonia)

l Most minerialisation is caused by microbial action after cultivationsl Soil moisture, temperature and texture effect rate of mineralization (clay slow, sand fast)l Green fresh residues decompose more rapidly than mature materiall Most ‘N’ losses occur through nitrate leaching, especially if no green cover is established over the winter

Quantities of N fixed in soil after harvest, including fixed N in the roots

LEGUMES

Benefits

l Reduce the need for fertilser Nitrogenl Can produce forage with high nutritive quality, reducing concentrate feeds l Reduces the cost of meat and milk productionl The only species that can fix high levels of Nitrogenl Produce silage with superior nutritive value and increase voluntary feed intakel Will improve soil structure and enhances microbal activity

WHITE CLOVERWhite clover is the most important forage legume currently grown in the UK. Mixed swards of grass and clover can be managed successfully for grazing and conservation. In these swards white clover can fix the equivalent of 100-200 kg of N/Ha, and produces a digestable feed high in protein. Sow in Spring or early Autumn, in a mixture at 1-1.5 kg per acre

RED CLOVERPersists for 2-4 years, has a strong tap root which improves drought tolerance. Red Clover can thrive in a wide range of soil types and has good winter hardiness. It can be sown straight or as a mixture and is now becoming a valuable break and high protein forage. Sow in Spring or early Autumn, in a mixture at 3 kg per acre.

SAINFOINProduces large quantities of protein rich forage, which can be grazed or conserved. It is bloat free, drought tolerant and suited to free draining soil types. This 3-4 year perennial is a deep rooted plant rich in sugars and ensiles very well. Sow in the Spring

LUCERNELucerne is a deep rooting high protein and mineral crop, mainly used for cutting, 3-4 cuts per year taken at six week intervals. The crop can last up to five years. Adapts well to a wide range of environmental conditions. It is a valuable break crop on account of its nitrogen fixation ability. Seed is sold pre-inoculated. Sow in the Spring or Summer

CRIMSON CLOVERAn annual legume, vigorous to establish which adapts to a wide range of soils, including soils of poor fertility. Visually very attractive with good frost resistance. Sow in late Summer to early Autumn

YELLOW TREFOILIs a productive Nitrogen fixing annual up to 125 kg N/Ha, with an earlier and longer flowering period than red clover. Its low growth habit and toleration of shade makes it ideal for undersowing spring crops. Yellow Trefoil is best broadcast into the host crop before the canopy closes. Sow in the Spring or Summer
