John Wibberley, world-class dental technician and renowned educator, will be speaking at The Dental Technology Showcase 2015. His talk is one of many that are likely to inspire and motivate you, giving you new ideas and perspectives to succeed in your profession.
In an increasingly competitive market, our lives can revolve around work, so it is paramount that we spend those working hours in a state of happiness. When a person enjoys their job, they work harder, longer and more successfully. It is human nature to seek out the things we love and try to prolong that enjoyment for as long as we can. People who are passionate about their job employ maximum effort to achieve their goals; they are more productive and often become more successful in their field.
Individuals who love their job are able to meet challenges with enthusiasm to reach their full potential and, as we spend a relatively long time at work, they enjoy a better quality of life. When a job is a passion it empowers the motivation, enthusiasm and energy of an individual, which leads to confidence and strength. Similarly if a person has a specialised interest, talent or flair that brings them pleasure in their work, they are able to enjoy success and often recognition.
One such man is John Wibberley who is widely considered to be one of the most experienced dental technicians in the UK, working alongside many of the countries leading implant dentists. With his wealth of experience and knowledge of commercial laboratories, John is also the managing director of the award-winning Waters Edge Ceramic Dental Laboratory where 19 full time dental technicians specialise in implantology and high quality restorations.
John is very passionate about the subject and has been running dental technician courses and lecturing for over 20 years around the world, including the Association of Dental Implantology and British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry.
John has also spent some time on the board of the Dental Laboratories Association as Director of Education helping to develop dental technology training and education. He believes in a formal training system for dental technicians but one that provides the correct balance between academic and vocational skills so that talented individuals are not discouraged from taking up the profession.
As recognition for all his hard work and his positive influences to the industry John was awarded with the title of Fellow of the British Institute of Dental and Surgical Technologists in 2005. This year John is lecturing at the Dental Technology Showcase on Friday the 17th of April in the Lecture Theatre at 11.45am. He will present ‘Implant Retained Dentures and Denture Stabilisation’ as part of the two-day educational programme. He recently spoke about his lecture:
“There are various materials available today to address the patient’s aesthetic and functional needs. The advantages and disadvantages of these materials will be discussed, as without a systematic approach with good communication, the end result is sometimes a huge disappointment for the technician, clinician and the patient.”
John aims to give technicians an insight into material selection and processing and will present and discuss three cases:
1. Fixed full dentures with two locator attachments in the lower denture: examining the choice of materials used and the techniques to produce high aesthetic results.
2. Milled bar over denture: discussing the choice of materials used and the techniques required to produce a high quality result.
3. Fixed All-on-4® restoration: considering the treatment planning, immediate loading and the final restoration.
This is a great opportunity for the whole dental team to benefit from John Wibberley’s experience and outstanding knowledge. The Dental Technology Showcase will also feature
an array of other nationally and internationally renowned speakers at the leading edge of their profession, providing dedicated and informative verifiable CPD sessions for DTs and CDTs. Attendees can also visit the Practical Theatre to watch live demonstrations and innovative techniques as well as the Technicians Workshop where they will have the chance to try new materials and gain hands-on experience.
New for 2015 will be Launchpad UK, providing delegates with the chance to see the latest products, technology and materials available in the UK dental industry. To take full advantage of the visit, attendees can register to receive updates and details of the manufacturers and suppliers exhibiting so they can plan their time at the showcase more effectively.
Dental Technology Showcase 2015 promises to be a worthwhile destination this year with an extensive programme of events to enlighten, enthuse and enhance the passion of technicians, clinical dental technicians and laboratory owners. There will also be opportunities to network and socialise for every member of the team so don’t miss it.
AT THE FOREFRONT OF DENTAL TECHNOLOGyContinued from front page...
DTS 2015 will provide the opportunity to explore different areas of modern dental technology, including tips for enhanced teamwork and introductions to new products and equipment. Aside from the two-day conference programme and CPD opportunities, the extensive trade exhibition will host more than 100 leading dental suppliers and manufacturers including 3Shape, Cendres + Metaux, Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Metrodent, Ivoclar Vivadent and Schottlander to name but a few. Each demonstrating the latest products, materials and technologies available, experts will be on hand to provide any information or advice you may need, helping you to choose the most suitable equipment for optimal clinical results, streamlined workflows and maximum return on investment.
With more than 1,800 dental technicians, clinical dental technicians and lab owners expected to attend, this will also be the perfect place to meet old friends and new.
As Steve concludes, this is one event truly designed for you and your team:
“The biggest benefit of attendance will be the exposure to new technologies. Held in a convenient location, DTS 2015 also provides a concentrated exhibition and lecture programme so that technicians can make efficient use of their time. The event is designed in the best interests of dental technicians and laboratory owners, and it is important that the industry is represented and supported in this way.”

Another year has rolled around, and once again the DLA are delighted to be working with CloserStill Media to deliver what looks to be the biggest and best DTS exhibition and conference to date.
It’s our aim to make sure DTS offers something for
everybody. Just take a look through this newspaper, and I’m sure you will find something – if not several things – of interest to you. This year we have several exciting new developments on show at DTS: many of your suppliers are presenting brand new products and services, there are international manufacturers, and some new companies based here in the UK will even be getting involved. Not only is all of this offered for free, but you also get access to an extensive range of seminars which count towards your verifiable CPD.
Throughout 2014 and since the beginning of this year, the DLA has been busy as usual with developments to support dental laboratories and dental technicians in the UK. Our British Bite Mark campaign is continuing to spread its message far and wide, educating dentists and the wider general public about the importance of knowing where our custom-made dental appliances come from and the benefits of supporting home-grown British labs.
The DTS exhibition this year is not to be missed and let’s not forget it’s also here to assist you as an individual technician or laboratory owner, so no matter how small or niche your business may be, don’t hesitate to speak to us about how we can support you at future events.
On behalf of the DLA and everybody involved with the Dental Technology Showcase who work so hard to make it happen, we look forward to seeing you at the NEC on the 17th and 18th April.

No longer a new concept in dentistry, digital workflow has evolved as more companies are offering tried and tested solutions designed specifically for dental laboratories.
Following so many exciting developments, it’s no wonder this is one of the hottest topics in dentistry right now. In fact, of the 1,600 dental technicians, CDTs and lab owners who attended the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2014, 50% were already searching for CAD/CAM solutions to suit them.
To this end, DTS 2015 will provide the perfect platform for you to delve further into the world of CAD/CAM. Within the extensive trade show you will find everything you need to adopt new technologies or enhance your current digital capabilities. From scanners of all prices and sizes to software, milling machines, 3D printers, lasers and consumables, there is a huge amount of free knowledge to be gained, as well as the opportunity to get hands-on with the vast array of equipment and materials available. Among more than 40 exhibiting companies offering CAD/CAM will be 3M ESPE, 3Shape, Amann Girrbach, Attenborough Dental, Bego, Bristol CAD/CAM, Carestream Dental, Consilio3D, Delcam, Doceram, GoPrint3D, Ivoclar Vivadent, LMI Technologies, Nobel Biocare, Laser Lines, Panadent, Renishaw, Sagemax, Schottlander, Sirona, Smart Optics, Straumann, Techceram, ZFX, Zirkonzahn and many more representing hundreds of products!
What’s more, the two-day educational programme at DTS will provide further insight into the modern digital workflow, with leading speakers exploring the intricacies of today’s CAD/CAM technologies both in the Lecture
Theatre and brand new CAD/CAM Theatre. Sessions will be presented by Stephen Green, Vanik Jinoian, John Wibberley, Morten Ryde Holm-Hansen, Dave Woolridge, Xabier Egurbide, Gianni Storni and many more. They will cover everything from the construction of orthodontic appliances to how legislation and trends are going to affect how we treat patients of the future, as well as how CAD/CAM can be utilised alongside existing practises for enhance outcomes. You’ll also have the chance to witness the smooth workflow achievable with digital workflows live on stage, explore the endless designing possibilities of CAD/CAM and learn more about the critical steps needed to ensure accuracy for complex screw retained restorations.
As Stephen Green says:
“A one-man lab may not require the same technologies as a large operation, and it’s important to choose the most appropriate piece of equipment for the business. As with any investment, the return achieved is an important aspect to think about even before purchase.”

SASCHA HEINBiography:
Sascha Hein, MDT graduated in dental technology in 1997 in his native Germany before working in a number of dental laboratories in Europe and the United Arab Emirates. He completed further studies in dental ceramics under Masahiro Kuwata in Tokyo, Japan and in 2004/05 he attended Master School in Freiburg, Germany where he graduated top of school and won silver in the annual Kanter Award Competition which premiers Germanys top three Master School students.
In 2007, founder Willi Geller inducted Sascha into the international Oral Design group and since 2011 he has served as editorial board member of the German Quintessence of Dental Technology. In 2012 he was welcomed into the Bio-Emulation group of which he currently holds presidency. Sascha Hein has lectured internationally for many years and has authored numerous publications of which some were featured in the 2009, 2011 & 2014 QDT Yearbook. After spending twelve years in Perth Western Australia, Sascha returned to his hometown in southern Germany in 2013 where he now lives and works.
Throughout existence, humans have learnt from nature to solve complex problems. Nature provides engineering solutions and inspires new technology everyday – researchers study all areas of nature to emulate its unique properties for scientific advancement.
For example, the centripetal spirals found in flowers and shells assist with the ideal flow of liquid; principles from the highly developed, reflective structure of butterfly wings have improved display technology; engineers have observed the characteristics of birds and fish to create efficient aerodynamics and the study of flora and fauna of the ocean have influenced the design of underwater turbines for tidal power generation. Similarly, architects frequently emulate the shapes and properties of plants, land and sea to inspire designs for buildings and structures.
Dental professionals are also constantly emulating nature when matching the colour of the dentition as well as the shape, colour and texture to create natural looking restorations. This is an example of bio-emulation and a thorough understanding of the structures and light interaction of the natural teeth is required for practitioners to achieve the best aesthetic results.
This fascinating world is an area that the Bio-Emulation Study Group is dedicated to. This international group of dental professionals are devoted to the advancement of excellence in aesthetic dentistry by using biomimetic approaches to recreate the anatomical form and optical features of the natural tooth. The group’s principal, Sascha Hein MDT, explains:
“To emulate nature as closely as possible has always been at the core of human desire. It has formed the foundation for many cultural and artistic developments.
“Modern dental technology also perpetually strives for individual aesthetic perfection. However the consistent and precise reproduction of the shade of natural teeth still presents us with an unchanged challenge - despite the immense academic and scientific efforts of the last twenty years.”
Sascha Hein has conducted a wealth of independent research into bio-emulation. He has authored many publications and his studies have led to the development of the visual_eyes liquid and the fluor_eyes flash system for fluorescent dental photography. Sascha has lectured around the world for many years and is due to deliver a 45 minute presentation entitled “Bio-Emulation: Science meets Art” in the Lecture
Theatre of the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2015. The flagship event of the Dental Laboratories Association (DLA) will take place on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th April, at the NEC in Birmingham, held alongside The Dentistry Show.
Sascha adds:
“I am keen to share my practical experience as well as the results of my many years of research and investigations with delegates - from the shade taking process, to dental photography, to the practical realisation.
“Both the demystification and the recognition of established ideas is necessary to foster personal development and growth, to produce consistent results in the every day of a busy dental laboratory. Join me on this creative adventure in search of nature and origin!”
There is always something new to learn and as William Wordsworth puts it so eloquently, ‘let nature be your teacher’.
Further learning opportunities available throughout DTS 2015 will be delivered through the brand new CAD/CAM Theatre. Bringing you the latest news and ideas in modern technologies and enhanced workflows, this Theatre will host leading dental manufacturers and suppliers who are keen to show how you can enhance your business processes with CAD/CAM.
Also new to DTS 2015 will be Launchpad UK, where you will have the chance to discover all the latest materials and innovations in the UK market. Registrants will even receive updates in the weeks leading up to event, so you can plan your visit and make the most of everything on offer.
Finally, designed specifically for dental technicians, clinical dental technicians and lab owners, the lab-dedicated Lecture Theatre, Practical Theatre Technicians Workshop will offer over 70 lectures, live demonstrations and interactive workshops. In addition to Sascha Hein, world-class speakers including John Wibberley, Jonathan Bill, Stephen Green and Phil Reddington will be presenting, with verifiable CPD available throughout.
For all this, plus copious networking and socialising opportunities make sure you and your team don’t miss DTS 2015! Register for your free delegate passes online today.

Sascha Hein’s lecture takes place in the Lecture Theatre on 18th April at 09:45. A session not to be missed!
The Practical Theatre hosts a series of at bench practical presentations of materials and techniques in a dedicated theatre on the show floor. These presentations and case studies will be to a theatre audience with live work projected onto a screen behind the presenter.
Sessions offer the chance for technicians to learn first-hand how to implement aspects of the presentations into their day to day working practice.

Dentures contain surface pores which microorganisms can colonise.1 Good denture hygiene is therefore essential – but, because dentures are about 10 times softer than enamel,2
cleaning them with non-specialist products like regular toothpaste can damage the surface.3

DS30 - optical scanning
Call 01453 524543 for more information or visit www.renishaw.com/dental
The DS30 scanner projects light patterns on to the object to be scanned and the digital surface is calculated from the image
data of two cameras. The use of advanced ‘blue light’ technology allows for quicker and more accurate scanning into narrow
and deep areas than conventional dental scanners.
Using only the smaller blue light wavelength, the scanner does not require a door, making it spacious, easy and quick to
access.
The blue light technology allows the scanner to produce images accurate to 10 microns.
Intelligent multi-view allows the selection of the best possible angles to acquire the required data. Impression scanning is fast
and accurate, allowing the digital manufacturing process to proceed without the need of a conventional model.

We live in a very cosmetic world. As the importance of appearance continue to dominate society, the public are becoming ever more aesthetically aware of their smiles. As such, modern dentistry has seen a growing number of requests for purely cosmetic procedures, and aesthetic results are prioritised in a vast majority of routine treatments.
While it is of course essential to deliver the outcomes desired by patients, it is also important to remember that the teeth are not a solely cosmetic feature. They serve a very specific purpose, and any treatment performed must maintain or enhance their functionality as well as their aesthetics.
This is a topic that Julian Dorey, Owner of Kingsbridge Dental Laboratory, feels very passionately about, and he is keen to remind both dentists and dental technicians of the fundamentals of all treatment procedures they complete.
“In an attempt to achieve beautiful smiles, we rightly focus on the aesthetic outcome of restorations we produce and place,” he says. “However, the shape of the functional surfaces are usually left smoothed and rounded, instead of sharp. This compromises on the mechanical success of the teeth, and I think it is the functionality of the smiles we are creating that is sometimes overlooked. If we go into a restaurant and order steak and are given two spoons to eat it with, we would have problems. Teeth are primarily designed to break up food, and not just to look good.”
Julian will be speaking on the subject within the Lecture Theatre at the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2015. The Dental Laboratories Association’s (DLA) flagship event, the show has changed its dates to Friday 17th and Saturday 18th April, at the NEC in Birmingham.
“Due to the change of dates for DTS 2015, I was delighted to be able to accept the invitation to speak at the next event. I run a functional occlusal course for dental technicians and dentists, so it follows that my presentation will be suitable for professionals in both roles. I would encourage
dentists and technicians who work together to attend the session together, in order to strengthen understanding between the two and enhance collaboration.
“I want to encourage delegates to consider the shapes they produce when restoring teeth, whether that is with regards to crowns, composite additions or other restorative materials. I believe there is a virtuous circle of increased function inducing increased beauty and decreasing overall forces. Focusing on the colours and transitions of our ceramics or composites is not the only factor in need of attention and I will show how functional surfaces can be an aid to better layering.
“My lecture will concentrate on the functional aspects of teeth, the morphology and how we can improve the function of teeth by creating sharpness. It is this sharpness that cuts through food, whereas rounded surfaces, like spoons, can only be made effective with with more force being applied. Increasing the forces increases the pressure on the natural teeth and our restorations.
“I will also blend this with some material information concerning all-ceramic dentistry, including zirconia an e. max. I think some all-ceramic materials are still associated with some bad press, but in my experience, this is not always justified. I hope to offer some best practice tips about the materials and design, to help address some of the misconceptions about them.
“Looking at a more philosophical side of dentistry, rather than just technical, I hope delegates find my session thought-provoking.”
Julian will be joined by a carefully selected line-up of speakers, including the likes of Stephen Green, Jonathan Bill, Sascha Hein and Phil Reddington to name but a few. A packed programme will bring you two days of inspiration, information and intrigue, with verifiable and non-verifiable CPD available throughout.

Help your patients eat, speak and smile with confi dence with the POLIGRIP® denture care regime.
Dentures contain surface pores which microorganisms can colonise.1 Good denture hygiene is therefore essential – but, because dentures are about 10 times softer than enamel,2 cleaning them with non-specialist products like
regular toothpaste can damage the surface.3
POLIGRIP® Denture Cleansers are proven to penetrate the biofi lm* and kill microorganisms within hard-to-reach surface pores.4 Available in a choice
of variants, POLIGRIP® Denture Cleansers are non-abrasive3 to clean5 the delicate denture material without scratching.3

MOUTH CANCER FOUNDATION
The Mouth Cancer Foundation is committed to raising awareness of mouth cancer.
Dental practices in the UK should be performing thorough mouth cancer checks on their patients. This quick, detailed examination takes just 2 minutes, yet very few patients are aware they should receive this at least once a year.
The charity’s Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme is successfully raising awareness amongst both patients and dental practices by calling every dental practice in the UK to be carrying out a thorough head and neck examination as part of regular check-ups. The scheme is a ‘Two minutes to save a life’ screening protocol that every dentist should be able to include in their routine examinations in order to increase early detection rates and save lives.
Membership to the scheme costs £200 in the first year but dental practices joining us during DTS will get a £50 discount.”

The Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) has now been running for 12 years, and in that time has grown into a technical and business conference, and major trade exhibition, catering for the whole lab team.
With over 100 companies, DTS 2015 will be the largest and most diverse assembly of trade suppliers, service providers and professional organisations available to Lab Owners and Technicians at any UK event. Each and every exhibitor will have a new product, new idea or specialist advice while many will be showcasing the latest equipment or materials, the best offers and support services to help you and your team run a smarter, more efficient, and profitable dental business.
At DTS 2015 there are already 30 exhibitors that were not with us in 2014, so if you think you saw it all last year, then think again. New suppliers are highlighted on page 10 and 11 of this newspaper - please make sure you visit them and see what they have to offer, they may just have the solution you’ve been looking for!
Across the trade floor you will find manufacturers from around the world who are looking for a UK agent, distributor or wholesaler to help them take their product to market. If you offer these services to international companies then, again, please make the time to find out what they’re looking to introduce to the UK profession.
The success and expansion of DTS is down to thousands of proactive, passionate lab owners and technicians like you, utilising the event to meet the trade. Your support has created a marketplace for suppliers to showcase their portfolio of products and, in turn, from their support and investment we are able to improve and enhance the delegate experience each year by offering a more enriched clinical and business education programme for the profession, for FREE.
All the lab and technician membership bodies and regulatory organisations that will be present at DTS 2015 provide exceptional support to dental professionals, so please visit those relevant to you and find out how they can support your career and business.
This will be the biggest and, hopefully, best DTS yet – I hope you can make it. Register for your frEE place if you haven’t already done so by visiting: www.the-dts.co.uk/psguide or call 020 7348 5776.
Kind Regards

The development and integration of CAD/CAM technology is fast becoming commonplace within modern dental laboratories. The many benefits of a digitised workflow ensure the delivery of a high quality and reliable
service, in turn encouraging trust and satisfaction from clients for increased referrals and business profits.
The speed and efficiency it offers for a wide variety of cases, enables a short turnaround for maximum productivity. The accuracy produced is unparalleled compared to traditional methods, increasing the precision of fit first time. What’s more, digital methods provide more robust security for data, while also improving communications with the dentist for better collaboration and a more successful clinical result.
With so many different options now available on the market, however, how do you choose which is right for you? What should you be looking for? Where should you be looking? What training or support will you need?
In his lecture at the Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2015, Stephen Green will attempt to answer some of these questions so that you may make the best decisions for your business. As owner of Stephen Green Dental Studio in Nottinghamshire, a leading laboratory in restorative crown and bridgework, Stephen has much experience with many different CAD/CAM technologies.
“My lecture will be about adopting new technology, exploring the variety of CAD/CAM options available to labs and how we as a business developed these technologies,” he says.
“I will look at why labs should consider digital technology if they haven’t already, the equipment available to them, what it does and where it is from. I will discuss where to look and what to look for, and how to review the options depending on delegates’ individual circumstances. After all, a one-man lab may not require the same technologies as a large operation, and it is important to choose the most appropriate piece of equipment for the business. As with any investment, the return achieved is an important aspect to think about even before purchase. With regards to this, I will share my experiences of CAD/CAM technology and how I measure the return on each piece of equipment I buy.”
For lab owners, the initial purchase or upgrade of CAD/CAM technologies also requires thought towards staff recruitment and training. Stephen also hopes to look at these areas and offer some advice and proven ideas to help you avoid any potential pitfalls.
“We have a predetermined recruitment and training processes we follow at Stephen Green Dental Studio with regards to digital technologies, and I hope to share this during my DTS lecture. I’ll also consider what has worked and not worked for us as a business in the past, so that delegates may gain ideas of how best to approach the subject in their own labs.”
Following on the theme, the brand new CAD/CAM Theatre at DTS 2015 will offer further insight into the various technological options on offer in dentistry. An array of leading manufacturers and suppliers will take to the stage to demonstrate the cutting-edge solutions they provide, sharing their own experiences and expertise to ensure you find the right product for you.
Also brought to you for the first time will be the exciting Launchpad UK. With its new dates of Friday 17th and Saturday 18th April, DTS 2015 will be ideally placed to introduce you to the very latest products, materials and equipment available in the UK. The experts will be on hand
to give you all the information you may need, and those who pre-register will receive updates and details of what to expect in the weeks leading up to the event, enabling you to plan your visit.
In addition to all this, verifiable CPD will be delivered throughout the lab-dedicated two-day programme in the Lecture Theatre, with demonstrations held by leading professionals in the Practical Theatre and hands-on sessions available in the Technicians Workshop. The outstanding speaker line-up will include those at the very forefront of the field including Jonathan Bill, Sascha Hein, Julain Dorey and Phil Reddington to name but a few. The extensive trade floor will also return from previous years, with more than 80 leading suppliers such as 3Shape, Biomet 3i, Cendres+Métaux, Heraeus Kulzer, Nobel Biocare, Straumann, amongst many other reputable names.
Remaining the Dental Laboratories Association’s (DLA) flagship event, DTS 2015 promises to deliver education, inspiration and networking opportunities for all dental technicians, clinical dental technicians and lab owners. Make sure you and your team don’t miss out by registering online for your free passes today!
